By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – An educated mind is one of the most powerful weapons a person can possess. Nevertheless, in parts of the world, much of the population is illiterate. In 2006, Kellie O’Brien and her daughter, Heather, went to volunteer at a convent in Tanzania to aid the Maasai population. “The Maasai are probably the most traditional of all African tribes and the last to change,” said Kellie O’Brien, who is a Hinsdale resident and the owner of English Gardens, LTD. “They still live in huts, still have no electricity and no furniture.” While volunteering, O’Brien said she gave miscellaneous items, but at the end of the day, no one’s life changed. That’s when she asked what she could do to really make a difference in Tanzania. The answer was to provide a prominent school funded entirely by donations. One year later, the O’Brien School for the Maasai opened. “We saw that there were hundreds of children outside the classrooms,” O’Brien said. “The village had more children than we ever imagined.” O’Brien said the school follows a Tanzanian syllabus and emphasizes modern health, vocational training, honesty and respect. We’re not trying to change what they believe in. But if we have these students, our goal is not just education academically, but it’s also formation,” O’Brien said. School Director Rebecca Sliwoski, 23, of Clarendon Hills is stationed at the school and said while most schools in Tanzania only require a 30 to 40 percent average to pass, the O’Brien School requires a 70 percent or higher average across the core subjects in order to pass. Sliwoski and O’Brien said they have encountered cultural obstacles with the Maasai. While the mothers want to see the children go to school, the fathers are sometimes set in

Since the school opened, O’Brien said the fathers have been valuing education more and now are proud of their daughters. O’Brien and Sliwoski also recently attended the African First Ladies Summit in Tanzania that was organized by former President George Bush and former First Lady Laura Bush. Sliwoski said it was a “surreal experience.”

“I mainly loved speaking to other education-based organizations from around Africa and exchanging success stories, best practices and even snippets from our failures,” Sliwoski said. At 70 years old, O’Brien has no plans of slowing down as she continues to provide the best for the school, even climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro last year as a fundraiser. Seeing the positive impact on the students and community, she said, has been worth the journey. “You don’t have to be rich. You don’t have to have all the answers. You just have to have the will to be able to plow through what has to be done,” she said.

OAK BROOK – A man will spend more than three years in prison for stealing almost $300,000 from an Oak Brook business, according to a news release from the office of DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin. Shaun Horan, 32 of 1673 Blackwell Lane, Aurora, has been sentenced to 54 months in the Illinois Department of Corrections for stealing more than $290,000 from his former employer, Resource One, in Oak Brook. Horan entered a blind plea of guilty to one count of theft of more than $100,000, a Class 1 felony, on June 19 in front of Judge Robert Kleeman, the

release said. From 2007 through 2011, Horan worked as an accountant at Resource One. During that time, Horan wrote himself 96 unauthorized checks totaling $291,237.23 from company accounts, according to the release. In an attempt to conceal the thefts, Horan either deleted or changed entries in the company books. Horan’s actions came to light when the comptroller of the company noticed that Horan had received a check from a company account other than the payroll account, the release said. After this discovery, Resource One conducted an internal audit, which exposed Horan’s thefts.

treatment of the animals in the shack that kind of led them to start the humane society,” said Public Relations Director Christie Cuthbert. When first starting out, the original six women paid for most of the supplies themselves and in 1959 raised $25,000 to build the shelter on the Hinsdale Humane Society’s present site. As opposed to the wooden shack, the new shelter had 11 kennels, a room for dogs and cats and a reception area. Iffert said each day at the society is a constant cycle of cleaning, feeding and keeping the animals physically and mentally healthy. Three hundred volunteers assist the shelter or work directly with the animals. “They’re a hardcore staff,” Iffert said. “They’re dedicated

and they’re working all day.” To celebrate how far the shelter has come in 60 years, the Hinsdale Humane Society hosted a birthday bash Saturday, featuring free food, music, tours and a cupcake eating contest for dogs. The winner of the eating contest for medium sized dogs was Bella, a two-year-old Australian shepherd mix who was adopted from the society last year. “It was very exciting,” said her owner, Laura Holewa, of Brookfield. “I didn’t think she’d eat it because she usually likes her treats broken up, but she seemed to enjoy it and she is motivated by food.” Holewa said she wanted to come back with her dog to visit the site and also to bring her cousin, who is looking for a pup-

py to adopt. Guests didn’t need a dog to get in on the fun. “I love dogs and this was a chance to come out and support animals,” said 15-year-old Stuart Burkhart of Hinsdale. The shelter has seen significant remodeling, doubling in size in 1974 and gaining a kitchen and a medical treatment room in 1983. In the future, Cuthbert said the society will add programs, such as working with Adventist Hinsdale Hospital to provide comfort dogs for patients who suffer from depression. In 2012, the society adopted more than 800 animals to families. Cuthbert said the society is looking to grow its programs and continue reaching out to the community.

HINSDALE – A single light dangled from the wooden ceiling of an unheated shack and the only hot water provided was from the drool of the dogs it was intended to house. “We started with six women and a little wooden shed,” said Humane Educator Kym Iffert of the Hinsdale Humane Society. “There were all these stray cats and dogs running around and they identified a need for trying to create happy, healthy animals.” That was was the site of the Hinsdale Humane Society in 1953, when it was considered an unkempt dog pound. But

because of the efforts of those Hinsdale residents, the humane society has become a DuPage County gem. Back then, the goals of the women were to educate the public and to provide safe and sanitary facilities. “That same mission stands today,” Iffert said. “We started with a few random cats and dogs and now we run about 1,000 animals through our shelter a year.” There also was a rabies outbreak in the 1950s DuPage County, prompting the women to start the humane society. “Back then, dogs didn’t sleep in bed with you. They ran around the village, so the concern was over the rabies outbreak and just the inhumane

Obamacare and the IRS: A disastrous combination After recent news reports revealed that IRS agents were engaged in widespread, systematic targeting of individuals based on their political and religious beliefs, Americans were rightly outraged. Subsequent Congressional investigations revealed not only were people harassed by agents, but IRS officials had been caught leaking confidential taxpayer information and squandering away millions of tax dollars. In light of these myriad scandals, the House of Representatives moved to enforce strict oversight of the IRS, curbing their power and putting strong checks in place to prevent future abuses. But thanks to the president’s health care law, the IRS is poised to expand into the health insurance business. That’s right, the very same agency caught harassing Americans and mishandling their tax information is tasked with the massive undertaking of implementing and enforcing Obamacare. IRS agents now will be collecting information on individual’s health status, enforcing the requirement that everyone get health insurance and fining those who don’t have coverage. In total, the agency will run point on almost 50 new provisions of the health care law. Summing up the cause for serious concern, the Treasury Department watchdog called the new responsibilities given to the IRS, “unprecedented in recent history.” Going one step further, the House also passed legislation

COMMUNITY VOICE Peter Roskam to delay the individual requirement to purchase health insurance, while also delaying the requirement for employers. If the Obama Administration thinks a one-year delay is good for big business, we should provide the same relief for families and individuals, too. It has been more than three years since the health care law was passed, and it’s clear the law still is not ready for prime time. Obamacare is only a few months from going into full effect, and the Administration continues to delay, push deadlines and shut down programs that have been shown not to work. Studies show that the cost of health care continues to rise, while industry experts and doctors warn about a decrease in the quality of care. Barring the IRS from implementing and enforcing the law is a step in the right direction. Delaying the mandates in the law is another. The end goal is to protect individuals from the rising costs and harmful effects of Obamacare, and working to replace it with patient-centered reforms that remove all Washington bureaucrats from your health care decisions.

8SOUND OFF Taxed twice for stormwater? Here we go again. The General Assembly and governor passed a bill to enable DuPage to enact their own stormwater fees based on property owners’ rainwater displacement. The law permitted Peoria property owners to vote on whether or not to be taxed for this on top of their ongoing

property taxes. The law did not give DuPage citizens the same right to vote. Now our county has to decide if it will or will not decrease our property taxes when it starts charging us another tax on stormwater on top of Downers Grove’s already existing tax on the same stormwater

Crews work Aug. 20 to demolish the building at First Street and Garfield Avenue.

Construction to begin soon at Garfield and First By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – It may have taken longer than expected, but the building at Garfield Avenue and First Street has been demolished, and residents now anticipate the start of construction. The structure, which was vacant for five years, was demolished this week. Village President Tom Cauley said he wanted the demolition to take place before the first day of school Aug. 22, but it was held up because of problems with the wall to the west of the property at the Chamber of Commerce building. “That wall had to be reinforced and stabilized before demolition could take place,” Cauley said. E.P. Doyle & Son LLC attempted to complete the demolition before the start of school, but owner Tim Doyle said work is done adjacent to schools in town “all the time.” “Like any project, we hope to do it as quickly as we can,” Doyle said. “In a perfect world, you do the demolition and you move right into construction.” Doyle said construction on a new building will begin “very shortly” and take about eight months to finish. Hinsdale Economic Development Director Tim Scott said a two story building featuring offices and retail space will occupy the property. Scott said he

didn’t know what retail options would inhabit the building, as those plans have not been discussed. “Somebody new bought [the building] and they in turn were hesitant to sign any leases because they were evaluating what types of tenants would go in there and what they would like to do to improve the building, or start from scratch,” Scott said. “Ultimately they decided to start with a clean piece of paper.” During construction, the sidewalk on the corner of First and Garfield will remain closed, but Cauley said the contractor was providing crossing guards at its own expense for middle school students at the start and end of each day. The retail space will join other new establishments as Hinsdale’s business landscape changes. These include the recently opened Fox’s Restaurant and the potential opening of Fullersburg restaurant, which could be across the street from the new building at First and Garfield. “This construction will take about a year and it will no doubt be disruptive to our town, but at the end of the process we’ll have a beautiful new building on a central site in the village,” Cauley said. “In the meantime, while construction is ongoing, we’ll work with the contractor to do everything we can to minimize disruption to the residents.”

Hinsdale nurse ‘humbled’ Hinsdale Police’s Bloom named by award recognition By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – When Ana Ahlenius began her career, she hoped to combine her love of science with her desire to work with people. “I originally started going into research and worked at Loyola for a while, and that was not just enough people contact,” the Lombard resident said. That’s when Ahlenius realized the field of nursing would address her scientific and social interests. For the past 28 years, Ahlenius has been a registered nurse. She has spent 20 of those years at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital, where she now works in the intensive care unit. Ahlenius was named “Nurse of the Year” at Adventist Hinsdale for 2013. “You have to think pretty quickly,” Ahlenius said. “Each day you’re not sure what you’re walking into, so you have to be very flexible and be able to walk patients and families through really difficult situations, and also making difficult decisions.”

Ahlenius said she’s usually assigned two to three patients to work with. “It’s very gratifying to know that you can be there with people in very difficult times,” she said. “You just have to help them deal with what is right in front of them.” The job can be emotionally draining. Ahlenius sometimes has to help families cope when their loved ones aren’t going to survive. But even the bleakest situations can take a surprising turn, as Ahlenius discovered a few years back. One day, while working in the neuro ICU, she was assigned to care for a young female patient who had fallen down a flight of stairs and was found unresponsive at the bottom. When Ahlenius came in to work that morning, she was informed doctors didn’t think the patient would survive because she had a severe brain injury. “Later that day, I started seeing her actually move her fingers and get better,” she said. “She was in the hospital for a very long time, but after a month she was well enough to go into rehab, and about six

months later she came back walking into our unit and she had completely recovered. That was very exciting and very rewarding to see we made a difference.” In addition to being a nurse, Ahlenius also is a member of Adventist Hinsdale Hospital’s stroke committee and is part of the hospital’s skin care team. In her free time, she expresses an artistic side by making her own greeting cards. “We got together as a group [of nurses] and made sympathy cards and when a family member would pass away, we’d all sign it,” she said. “When you are caring for someone, you become very close to their family.” Regarding her recent recognition, Ahlenius said she was humbled by the award, especially because she was singled out in a team of nurses. “There’s a lot of people who work very hard every day and a lot of nursing work is behind the scenes,” she said. “Nobody realizes exactly what you do sometimes. It was very humbling, because it’s not just me. It’s a whole lot of nurses who work very hard every day.”

Suspect questioned after woman shot, killed at Burr Ridge church By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com BURR RIDGE – A 62-yearold woman was pronounced dead at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital at 1:42 a.m. Thursday after being shot in the head in the St. Mark Coptic Orthodox Church parking lot, 15w455 79th St., in Burr Ridge, according to Burr Ridge Deputy Chief Marc Loftus. Loftus said police received a call about 1 a.m. in regard to the gunshot victim. Upon arrival, there was one person on the scene who called 911 and was taken to the Burr Ridge Police Department to find out his relationship to the incident.

“Right now he’s in custody not free to leave,” Loftus said Thursday morning. Loftus said the person in custody was considered a suspect. He also said this appeared to be an isolated incident and there is no threat to the community and no one at large that the police are looking for. “This happened in the early morning with nobody else around so there’s no danger to anybody at the church or the surrounding community,” Loftus said. The church was closed Thursday along with the preschool that’s associated with the church, Loftus said. A silver Cadillac was towed

away from the church parking lot about 9:50 a.m. Thursday. Police were not releasing names of the woman or the suspect Thursday morning. Loftus said police also were investigating why the woman and suspect were at the church at 1 a.m., and the investigation is ongoing. If the death is ruled a homicide, Loftus said “all signs point to yes” as it being the first homicide in Burr Ridge since it was incorporated. “There have been some in unincorporated areas that have since become Burr Ridge, but this is the first since Burr Ridge has been incorporated,” he said.

‘Chief of the Year’ By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – About three months ago, the chief of the Hinsdale Police Department learned he was going to be named “Police Chief of the Year,” but in typical modest fashion, he mainly kept it to himself. “I kind of didn’t tell anybody because I just don’t like to toot my own horn,” said Chief Brad Bloom with a laugh. Bloom received a letter in May from the Family Shelter Service Board informing him he would be named the Illinois State Crime Commission’s Police Chief of the Year for 2013. Family Shelter Service works with law enforcement agencies whenever a domestic violence incident is reported. A member of Family Shelter Service since 2010, Bloom said it is the only provider of domestic violence services in DuPage County. The organization helps individuals obtain an order of protection,

Great day for kids I attended my first Kops N Kidz day on Aug. 10 [in Lemont]. I would like to compliment the Park District, police officers, donors and volunteers. I thought that it was a great outing. I was surprised to see that everything was free for the kids. It is wonderful that all families, regardless of their financial situation, were able to take their kids to have a good time. I am already looking forward to next year.

follows up with counseling services and provides emergency shelter for domestic violence victims. “It was always something that was near and dear to me,” Bloom said. “I believe in what they do and wanted to take a more active role in supporting them when my youngest daughter left for college, so I thought it would be a good avenue to give back.” Bloom said he was somewhat surprised to receive the recognition, but was “humbled and honored” by it. “I think there’s a lot of very good police chiefs out there and to be recognized by this organization; it was certainly something I was humbled by,” he said. Bloom, who has served as chief of police since 2002, said he was proud of improving the services the police department provides. “This is a good place to be the police chief,” he said. “It’s a good town to work in and it’s certainly been a very fulfilling career for me here.”

repainting the crosswalk lines and stripes in La Grange Park needs to consider a new line of work. They’re a mess everywhere in town. Lots of spills and splattered paint. I hope whoever’s in charge has to clean it up.

Ruined lawns I live on Springwood Lane in Bolingbrook. Comcast invaded the neighborhood this morning with three or four trucks and equipment to run a new line. None of the neighbors were aware of this, and all they’re doing is tearing up their grass. They’re telling them that they’re going to repair them. What they’re gonna probably do is throw a little seed down there when they’re done, and they’re actually ruining some very, very good lawns.

Restaurant reviews

Superlative experience awaits at prasino LA GRANGE – The western suburbs are full of amazing, unique restaurants, and La Grange has become known as a dining destination. Still, there aren’t many places like prasino, located just across the street from its sister restaurant, the beer and gastropub haven called Wild Monk. Restaurants such as prasino abound in big cities, where culinary trends gravitate toward sustainable, seasonal and local with chef-centric menus appealing to a foodie crowd. A dish is displayed simply and beautifully, all of it begging to be Instagrammed (of which I’m guilty). The word “prasino” means green in Greek, and the restaurant takes the sentiment to heart, focusing on ingredients that are organic and hormoneand antibiotic-free. On the menu is a key that identifies the letters next to food and drink items to let diners know what’s vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free. My dining companion and I began our meal with a pan of absolutely outstanding, fresh and delicately flavored mussels. I love mussels – I know not all do – but if you want to give them a spin, prasino is a good place to try. The mussels are steamed in the pan, bathed in a white wine, garlic, butter and herb broth, where the garlic does not overpower, and the flavor is light and rewarding. The grilled bread is smokey and great for soaking up the flavor. For our second course, we decided to try one of several flatbread offerings on the menu. We went for the farm flatbread, made with a blend of cheeses, sprinkled with chives and drizzled with truffle honey. If you like honey in your Greek yogurt, you’ll like this. The creamy and sweet combination works well together atop cracker-thin flatbread that’s perfectly crispy on the edges, with just a little chew in the center. Before moving on to the final course, I’ll take a moment to discuss the cocktail menu

The farm flatbread – cracker thin and absolutely delightful – is prepared with cheeses complemented by chives and truffle honey.

Creatures of the sea

CREATURES A: Narwhal B: Frilled shark C: Vampire squid D: Fangtooth fish E: Portuguese man-of-war

T

he ocean: It’s deep, dark, mysterious and illed with life. Creatures of the sea vary greatly ?— from some of the smallest organisms on Earth to some of the biggest — and range from the truly harmless to the seriously dangerous. Below, you will see a description of the wild and weird animals from the ocean’s depths. Can you match the correct name and drawing of each real animal to each description? — Anne Raih, More Content Now

1: I’m pretty scary-looking — you can tell where I get my name from taking one look at the long, sharp fangs that burst out of my mouth. I use these teeth to catch smaller fish that swim by me, and I live in the depths of the ocean. What am I?

2: I look to be part octopus and part squid, with eight red and brown tentacles and a squid-like body. I am known for living my life in the dark depths of the ocean, and because of that, I have very large eyes: The largest eyes compared to body size, in fact, of any known animal in the world. Although I am a carnivore, I don’t want to suck your blood. What am I?

3: I’m rarely seen by humans because I live in the deepest, darkest corners of the ocean. Some scientists refer to me as a living fossil, because I am very similar to my prehistoric ancestors. I look like a giant eel, but I have many rows of teeth, like a shark. What am I?

5: If you see my pretty clear bubble floating over the surface toward you while you are swimming, it’s time to head in to shore. Below water, I have long tentacles that unleash a nasty, venomous sting. I am the ultimate trickster: I am not one animal, but a group of organisms that lives, works and floats together. What am I?

4: Some say I am the unicorn of the sea: I am a porpoise, but with a very special gift — a large tusk that sticks out from the top of my head. Scientists aren’t sure what the tusk is for, but they know that it makes me unique and beautiful in the cold waters of the Arctic. What am I?

HINSDALE CENTRAL RED DEVILS SENIOR SAYS | BRIAN ALLEN

‘We need to finish games’ By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – April 20 brought a highlight for Brian Allen as he put a close to his college football recruitment by committing to Michigan State. His plans for the next level are all lined up, but the offensive lineman hopes to create more highlights this fall with his Hinsdale Central teammates.

Rossi: As seniors, what do you hope to accomplish this year? Allen: Just have fun, that’s the first priority. But we want to win football games. We’ve been working hard all summer so hopefully we can come together at the right times and things can go our way.

Rossi: How much progress did you guys make over the

ting our finger on anything. Obviously we want to go all 14 weeks. Last year I think we kind of underachieved and peaked early. We had a tough game against Glenbard West and after that everyone was kind of like, ‘Those are the 7A state champs and we should have beat them.’ This year I think it’s a different attitude, a different mindset going into the season that we need to finish games.

Hinsdale Central’s Brian Allen prepares to snap the ball Tuesday during a practice drill. Allen: We’ve just been trying to get mentally tougher in practice, team time and scrimmages. Everything we do we do 100 percent. Last year it seemed like we took plays off and stuff like that, and it ultimately cost us. Rossi: Do you feel like you guys wear a target just because

of some the players on the team? Allen: Yes and no. Ian [Bunting, Michigan-bound receiver] is kind of a bigger target than I am because I’m an offensive lineman so there’s only so much you can do. But I don’t think there’s any added pressure because of it.

DARIEN – Frank Cabrera’s football career started as a seventh-grader at Eisenhower Junior High, but 2012 was the year to remember. With Cabrera helping pave the way on the offensive line, Hinsdale South raced out to a 4-0 start on the way to ending a six-year playoff drought. Unfortunately, Cabrera missed the postseason with an ankle injury, but he hopes to lead the Hornets back to the second season again this fall.

HINSDALE SOUTH HORNETS WHAT TO WATCH n

HUNGRY FOR MORE: A long dry spell without a playoff berth ended last season, but

South went out in the first round. Getting back to the postseason is a primary goal, and last year’s playoff performance serves as a motivator. “I feel if we make the playoffs this year we’re going to go far because now we know what it’s like in the playoffs. We know what it takes,” quarterback Jake Czajkowski said. n

NEW SLINGER: Czajkowski will take over at quarterback for the graduated DJ

Deolitsis, and after a full summer of 7-on-7 events and more than two weeks of preseason practice, he’s ready to fill that role. “Jake’s a real smart guy. He’s Hinsdale South quarterback Jake Czajkowski steps into a pass during a practice Aug. 16. Matthew Piechalak – mpiechalak@shawmedia. com

like Ivy League-type material so the mental aspect of things clicks right away,” head coach Mike Barry said. n DEVELOPING ‘D’: South’s defense did pitch two shutouts last fall, but six times the

unit allowed teams to score 21 or more points, including the final five games. Team captain and defensive lineman Anthony Riskus said the front four is ready to do its part to bring those numbers down. “Our D-line play is looking good,” Riskus said. “We’ve improved a lot of the little stuff. And we have a sophomore [Josh King] on the line who never played D-line before this year so he’s gotten a lot better. He’s picking it up pretty naturally.”

They will be looking for a similar result Friday night, but there will be a few things to keep an eye on. Jake Czajkowski will make his debut at quarterback after seeing a little time at that position last fall. Czajkowski and the offense won’t have 2012 all-conference running back Arian Toney at their disposal as he is expected to miss several games with a Lisfranc injury in his foot. Riverside Arts Weekend (RAW) celebrates both visual and performing arts with a multi-media juried fine arts fair and full musical performance schedule centered in Riverside’s Guthrie Park. Glamour takes center stage on Sunday, May 19 at 2:00 p.m. as RAW presents Revelry, a runway show featuring emerging designers from Dominican University. Revelry highlights fashion as a form of art with the cutting edge work of nine (9) alumnae of Dominican University’s Apparel Design program. The designers will present collections true to their respective artistic visions and highly unique from one another.

Revelry opens with the work of established designer Caroline Borucki (caro___) who has retail presence in New Buffalo, Michigan. It then segues to the work of emerging designers Alexandra Howard (Elmwood Park), Izzy Heras (Romeoville), Amanda Lindley (Tinley Park), Samantha Petkofski (Niles), Iris Carney (Berwyn), Molly Morettes (Park Ridge), Hannah Gerhardt (Omaha, NE) and Erin Von Kannon (Monmouth). Many of the designers will also exhibit portfolios and samples of their work at a Dominican University collective booth throughout Riverside Arts Weekend.

The mother and son team make up Higgins Glass Studio, 33 E. Quincy, entrusted to the Wimmers to carry on the art crafted by their long time mentors, Fran and Michael Higgins, who began the company in 1948. Louise and Jonathan agree that it was Fran’s ideas and Michael’s energy and ingenuity that led these two huge talents to start their work out if their Chicago apartment in 1948. Over the years their art sold in such major retailers as Marshall Field’s, Georg Jensen and Bullocks Wilshire, the very high end store in the California based department store chain. In 1966, the Higgins decided to return to private studio work and set up their offices in Riverside. The website notes that “here they were free to set their own goals, meet their own standards and design in the direction their hearts and minds led them.” There’s a lot of history in Higgins, and the Wimmers are proud of their work and the company.
