He graduated in 2001 and obtained his associate degree in culinary arts through College of DuPage. Within a few years he earned executive chef certification. He said he and his wife, Mindy, were looking to make a change after working in a variety of Chicago-area restaurants since then, including roles as executive chef of Chicago Firehouse Restaurant and the Quadrangle Club at the University of Chicago. Turano also had a stint under Ted
Cizma, Food & Wine magazine’s Best New Chef of 2001. “You have to put yourself out there and put yourself at risk,” he said. “We’re pretty psyched to start this stage of our life.” He said when he entered the competition, he repeatedly told himself “it was mine to lose.” “I don’t know when it really sunk in [that I’d won],” he said. “The best part was they had me call my wife on the show and break the news to her, and she just went crazy.” The couple moved to Santa Barbara in June with their dog. Turano re-opened the restaurant under his leadership July 4. It had been closed for about a year for renovations. “It’s definitely a little bit different than Chicago,” he said. “It’s funny to hear people here talk about how its cold outside and like every day it’s 72 degrees. “The other day I saw a guy with a T-shirt, it said, ‘My life, your vacation.’ That’s kind of what it’s like out here because it’s always so nice.”

By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com Signs reading “Stop the Church Tax” and “No Rain Tax” bobbed up and down North County Farm Road before on Aug. 27 DuPage County Board meeting in protest of the recently-signed bill that gives the county authority to charge property owners a stormwater utility fee. A standing-room crowd crammed into the DuPage County Board room to voice their opinions on the issue. At several points during the meeting, Board Chairman Dan Cronin commented on the protesters’ cheers and applause, asking them to respect decorum. During the meeting’s public comments, local resident Tom Sutton said the measure was rushed too quickly. “It wasn’t discussed. So you tell me, it’s one of the most important bills that affects everybody in this county, and it wasn’t talked about,” he said, pointing out that several DuPage County

politicians in the Illinois Senate did not vote in favor of the bill. “This is Springfield politics at its best, Springfield politics have come to DuPage County and it’s time for it to go back to Springfield and have DuPage County go back into the hands of the people,” he said. “People don’t want this bill.” Cronin has said the county stormwater fee would be more equitable because a fee would be based on the amount of stormwater displaced by a property. “If you’re a big developer and you put down a large, 50,000 square feet parking lot of concrete, and you displace a lot of water to your neighbor downstream, you’ll pay more,” Cronin said when the House passed the bill. “If you take steps to install semi-permeable pavers and rain barrels at home, your fee will be a lot less, you’ll get credit for it. It’s the ultimate in responsible behavior policy.”

Men Who Want to Stay Active, Feel Younger, and Remain Socially and Professionally Engaged Should Address Hearing Loss By Audrey G. Freeman, Au.D., Dr. of Audiology Hearing health affects a man’s lifestyle. If he wants to stay active, feel younger, and remain socially and professionally engaged, he should address any hearing loss he may be experiencing. This is the overriding message that the Better Hearing Institute is delivering to men.
Remember that there are simple things they can do to protect their hearing. they should listen to smartphones and MP3 players only at a low volume or use new, wireless hearing aids that can connect to these devices. Also use ear protection in loud environments or when using power tools.
Studies show that men who address their hearing loss– with the use of hearing devices or other appropriate treatment and accommodations–most often improve their quality of life because it helps them maintain a more engaged, active lifestyle at both home and work. Fortunately the vast majority of people with hearing loss can beneit from hearing aids. In fact, eight out of ten hearing aid users say they’re satisied with the changes that have occurred in their lives speciically due to their hearing aids.
Many men enjoy and keep pace with the latest in consumer electronics. It’s surprising to ind that so many men are not fully aware of the technological revolution that has occurred in the hearing aid marketplace in the past few years. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness of recent advances holds back many from dealing with their hearing health.
ally, depending on their degree of hearing loss.
For decades, research has shown an association between unaddressed hearing loss and a whole range of physical, mental, and emotional conditions–from depression, anxiety, and strained relationships to cognitive decline, and dificulty learning new tasks. A national BHI study uncovered income loss as an under-recognized consequence of leaving hearing loss unaddressed. The study found people with untreated hearing loss lose as much as $30,000 in income annu-
In recent years, considerable information has emerged on the link between hearing loss and several common chronic diseases that men suffer–including heart disease, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and depression. While research is still needed to fully understand the association between hearing loss and these illnesses, this relatively new information makes it all the more important that men have their hearing evaluated as part of their routine medical care.
To be informed healthcare consumers, men need to realize that today’s modern hearing aids are highly effective, sleek, and sophisticated wearable electronics that can help them stay actively connected– not only to life, but also to their other prized electronics, from smartphones to home entertainment systems. So whether you’re a man with hearing dificulty or living with one who does, seek professional advice and have your hearing tested as the irst step in staying active and engaged in life. –Adapted with permission from the Better Hearing Institute

Bond denied for man charged in mother’s death to the shooting. Upon arrival, Michael Bassaly was on the scene and was taken to the Burr Ridge Police Department to find out his relationship to the incident. The church was closed Thursday morning along with the preschool that’s associated with the church, Loftus said. A silver Cadillac was towed away from the church parking lot about 9:50 a.m. Thursday and taken to the Burr Ridge Police Department. The scene was then cleared and the parking lot was reopened to the church. If the death is ruled a homicide, Loftus said “all signs point to yes” as being the first homicide in Burr Ridge since it was incorporated. “There have been some in unincorporated areas that have since become Burr Ridge, but this is the first since Burr Ridge has been incorporated,” he said. Bassaly’s case is due back in court Sept. 9.

A: Yes. A blood disorder could definitely play into your dentist’s decision about how to treat you. You should discuss any medical condition with your dentist. Medicine that you’re taking can also play a role in your dentist’s decisions. A blood disorder could decrease the number of platelets in the blood or impair their ability to collect. Platelets are crucial to blood clotting. Therefore, blood can take longer to clot, meaning a patient can bleed longer and more profusely in the course of a dental procedure. Here are some types of blood disorders. Thrombocytopenia, which can result from an immune reaction in which a body develops antibodies to its own platelets, or from a disease like leukemia, can cause internal bleeding and slow healing. Hemophilia, a genetic disorder in which a patient vulnerable to bleeding so uncontrolled as to be life-threatening. Von Willebrand’s Disease is the most common of the genetic bleeding disorders and is caused by a deficiency in a clotting factor. In addition to these disorders, let your dentist know if you have been prescribed any anticoagulant medications as a precaution against stroke or heart attacks. Keep your dentist apprised of any changes in your prescription or overall medical condition.

dciamprone@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Few will ever forget the flood that rocked many Downers Grove homes and businesses the morning of April 18, mainly because so many are still recovering. One of those businesses is Perma-Seal, a company that specializes in basement waterproofing and foundation repair and has been in town for about 20 years. The Perma-Seal building, 513 Rogers St., needed “a complete overhaul,” including replacing drywall and inventory, computers and phone lines, and buying new furniture and computers, according to Marketing Manager Kerry Morgan. But perhaps the largest blow came when the company was told insurance would not cover the damage, forcing Perma-Seal to pay $2 million outof-pocket, according to Mor-

Currently, stormwater services in the county are funded through property taxes, from which nonprofits, schools and churches are exempt. On top of that, there hasn’t been talk of adjusting county real estate taxes to counteract the additional fees, Falesch said. “I pay my real estate tax, why should I be taxed twice? I pay through the water bill, how are you going to collect your fees? Through another bureaucracy,” he said. Prior to the meeting, the president of Taxpayers United
gan. Still, three-and-a-half months later, Perma-Seal is back up and fully running. Despite the millions in damages and being forced to compensate with what equipment and tools were available, Perma-Seal was able to help more than 25,000 homeowners since the flood, the business said. With limited crews and damages to inventory, Perma-Seal offered emergency sump pump services and set up a “cash or check-only storefront” as debit or credit transactions couldn’t be completed.

of America called on DuPage County taxpayers to protest the fee. In a news release, TUA President Jim Tobin called it a “rain tax.” “This bizarre bill allows ‘stormwater utility fees’ on all properties in DuPage County, including homes, businesses, schools, churches and forest preserves,” Tobin said in a statement. “This could be the largest tax increase in DuPage County history.” The bill requires a twoyear planning and education process before the county can put the fee in place. The county board must approve the proposed fee before it is enacted. Rates and credits for green stormwater solutions – such as permeable pavers, rain barrels, retention ponds and other methods – would still need to be set before the proposal moves forward.

DOWNERS GROVE – Gov. Pat Quinn signed a bill in August allowing the Illinois Tollway to publish the names of toll violators who owe more than $1,000 on the agency’s website. The bill follows a crackdown by the agency in September 2012 when it filed administrative judgments against the scofflaws in court. The Tollway filed 187 administrative judgments and collected nearly $500,000, according to the agency. It began publishing the violators names Aug. 28 with an initial “Super Scofflaw” list of 157 businesses that the Tollway filed lawsuits against in circuit court, as well as an estimated dollar amount for each. In all, these scofflaws owe the Tollway nearly $3.7

Have you put off doing your kitchen long enough? Is this the year you have vowed to do something with your cabinets? Have the horror stories of kitchen remodeling made you afraid to even think about it? With prices approaching and surpassing $100,000 for full kitchen remodeling, it is no wonder the Average Joe and Jane feel a little overwhelmed. Enter Kitchen Tune-Up! This locally owned (Downers Grove) National Franchise has been offering minor kitchen remodels for 19 years. Marty Ceranec, the owner, has won numerous awards from KTU for Sales, Customer Service, and Creativity. He received the highest award in 2000 when he won National Franchise of the Year and in addition, is a two time Angies List Super Service Award Winner. We offer Kitchen Solutions for Any Budget. “I think some people get sticker shock when they look at the price of redoing an entire kitchen and are overwhelmed. We work with clients every day who have the same anxieties,” says Marty. KTU can provide anything from the Signature Kitchen Tune-Up to a full blown design and remodel. “The bulk of our work last year was in refacing and door replacement. Door replacement doesn’t change the color, but replaces old particle board doors with new solid raised panel doors utilizing concealed hinges. Refacing, on the other hand, enables one to change their oak cabinets to maple cabinets without buying all new cabinetry,” said Marty. “These two options also save landfill space because we are saving the boxes.” Why have they been so successful? Simple things like showing up on time and returning phone calls which is often lacking in the remodeling industry. I have chosen to keep the business small so I am involved in every job with my three long time installers. By doing this we have become well known as experts in minor kitchen remodeling.” Kitchen Tune-Up also offers cabinetry upgrades such as glass doors, tipout trays, soft-closing dovetail drawers, and full extension rollouts as well as counters in laminate, solid surfaces, granite and quartz (Cambria) “The Best Counter Top Around.” When questioned about any regrets, Marty replies, “We often Call Marty Now For a Free Estimate get calls to update the kitchen when the owner is ready to sell. We always wonder why they See Our Work At didn’t do it earlier so they could have enjoyed it sooner.” www.kitchentuneup.com

DOWNERS GROVE – After Steven Szafranski’s trip this summer, a bike ride to downtown Chicago and back will feel like a jaunt around the block. On Aug. 11, the Downers Grove resident returned from a cross-country bicycle trip with the Fuller Center for Housing that took him from the Mississippi delta region to the Rocky Mountains before finishing in Canada. Along the way, he and the other volunteers stopped in six cities to help building or clean-up projects for the underprivileged.
began looking for something memorable and meaningful to do this summer as he transitions careers. The 25-year-old recently left his job as a financial adviser with plans to look for work in teaching or with a nonprofit. He settled on the Fuller Center’s trip because it included the public service aspect, and because its required fundraising commitment – $1 for each mile of the trip – went straight to the cause. For riders like Szafranski without a bike, the Fuller Center also offered a bike assistance program fundraiser.

“We opened up our doors and started handing out sump pumps with instructions for people whose pump was dead and they had water,” Morgan said. Owner Roy Spencer said he has seen floods that were devastating in his time, but not in this particular area. “We’ve been in Downers Grove now for 23 years in this location and have never seen anything like that,” Spencer said, referring to the April 18 storms.

Spencer said the flooding at the Downers Grove office was likely caused by sewers along Rogers Street that were clogged with debris. “If that viaduct [on Rogers Street] had stayed open we probably wouldn’t have had as bad of flooding,” Spencer said. Being a victim of flooding was an unusual spot for the flood-proofing business, but a valuable experience nonetheless, Morgan said. “If anything, it’s just made us more empathetic for what people go through because we’ve lived through it ourselves,” she said.

Township’s electrical aggregation program moves forward The unincorporated residents and small-business owners of Downers Grove Township will soon have the opportunity to weigh-in regarding the township’s electrical aggregation program. Two public meetings will be held to raise questions and concerns about the program. The first was held Aug. 29, while the second will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 12 at the Chinese Christian Mandarin Church, 9S565 Clarendon Hills Road in Willowbrook. Residents approved a binding proposition on the April 9 ballot that authorized the township to pool or aggregate unincorporated residential and small commercial electricity accounts and negotiate a lower price for the electricity supply. Because of electrical deregulation, consumers can choose their electric supplier while continuing to receive reliable electricity delivery service from ComEd. The township, along with its energy consultant, Solo Energy Solutions, will use a competitive solicitation process to select a supplier that is certified by the Illinois Commerce Commission and registered to serve residential and commercial electricity accounts. Solo will be working on the township’s behalf to lock in favorable rates, track market

COMMUNITY VOICE Kathleen Abbate changes, manage risk and budget for long-term stability before an optimum electrical contract can be established. No matter which supplier is chosen, ComEd will continue to deliver the same services it does today. “This is the time for township residents to learn about and discuss the advantages of electrical aggregation,” said Frank Wurster, Downers Grove Township supervisor. Wurster stated that results from more than 600 other Illinois communities that have used electrical aggregation can reduce utility costs while maintaining ComEd services. “This program can provide immediate benefits for township residents and businesses by reducing monthly electricity bills. ComEd will continue to maintain the wires, read the meters, send monthly payments, and ensure system safety and integrity,” he said. HEALTH | MIND | BODY Lower costs, top technologies and unbeatable patient experiences “You need surgery.” Three words that no one ever wants to hear. Even the most common procedures can cause pit-of-the-stomach anxiety. You certainly don’t need to deal with scheduling, registration and insurance hassles on top of it all. At Elmhurst Outpatient Surgery Center (EOSC), you won’t have to. Licensed by the state and accredited by The Joint Commission, just like a hospital, EOSC provides same-day surgical care, including diagnostic and preventive procedures such as colonoscopies, cataract surgery, and hernia repair. As an ambulatory surgery center (ASC), however, EOSC provides a different – and, yes, much improved - patient experience. ASCs are modern health-care facilities focused on providing state of the art care and unmatched customer service. EOSC helps you get back to your family, friends, work and all of the daily activities that enrich your life – with minimum worry and little frustration.
How exactly does this care differ from what you would receive at a hospital? Reduced infection risk. Infections rates are much higher at hospitals, where it is difficult to control the transmission of diseases. EOSC’s infection rates are less than 1%, compared to the 5% experienced in many hospitals. Lower costs. Surgery is more cost effective at ASCs than at hospitals. Consider the following: Cataract surgery at EOSC costs only $3,642, compared to an average of $7,887 at other Illinois facilities, while colonoscopies run $2,592 at EOSC and an average of $4,234 at other Illinois facilities. Did you know that by shifting just half of all eligible outpatient surgeries to the ASC setting, Medicare could save an additional $2.3 million annually? A study conducted in 2010 by an ASC Advocacy Committee proved this. A better patient experience. EOSC is upping the convenience quotient even more, by offering you the option of completing registrations and medical histories online and receiving important
reminders via mobile messages delivered directly to your smart phone. On the day of surgery, our goal is to make your experience as stress free as possible but starting procedures on-time and getting you back to the comfort of your home as soon as possible. Top technologies. EOSC continually invests in state-of-the-art equipment. EOSC is one of the first wave of facilities in Illinois to perform cataract surgery and astigmatic correction using the Catalys™ Precision Laser System. EOSC surgeons also utilize iStent® Trabecular Micro-Bypass Stent to reduce eye pressure in adult cataract patients with mild-to-moderate open-angle glaucoma and TENEX Health TX,™ a minimally invasive treatment option for tendon and soft tissue injuries that was developed in collaboration with the Mayo Clinic. It’s time for you to experience healthcare in a new way, because you deserve it. Lower costs, better outcomes and a beautiful environment are waiting for you at EOSC. People take daily vitamin supplements for a variety of reasons. Many believe that vitamins will serve as an insurance policy of sorts should they not be consuming the necessary vitamins and minerals through their diets. Others believe that vitamin supplements will ease certain ailments or help prevent diseases, such as cancer. Beliefs such as these have helped the dietary supplements business become a billion-dollar industry. There have been many clinical studies conducted to look into the correlation between vitamin supplements and the prevention of certain types of cancer. Understanding the results can be confusing. There is no magic formula for consuming a broad-spectrum vitamin supplement to serve as a blanket remedy for preventing cancer. However, there have been some studies that show certain vitamins may help lower risk for specific cancers. For example, a study published in 2010 found women who had high levels of vitamin A and C in their bodies, whether from diet or supplement use, had fewer cases of cervical cancer compared to women with lower levels of these vitamins. Vitamin B6 has been known to have various benefits, including reducing a person’s risk of developing lung, breast and colon cancer.
Those with high blood levels of B6 have a lower risk, but there is no proof that taking B6 supplements will have the same benefits. Some studies indicate that vitamin E supplements may reducemen’s risk of developing prostate cancer. Studies in the 1970s suggested that high doses of vitamin C could be an alternative cancer treatment, says The Mayo Clinic. These findings were debunked when it was discovered the research methods used to reach the conclusions were flawed. Subsequent studies did not corroborate the 1970s results. However, more attention is now being paid to administering vitamin C intravenously, which has different effects than when the vitamin is taken orally. Until clinical trials are completed, researchers cannot say for sure if intravenous vitamin C will be the new all-natural cancer cure. It is important to note that taking vitamin supplements at the suggested levels recommended should be relatively safe for most people. Individuals should not super-dose vitamins in an effort to achieve better health results. Also, people should discuss any vitamin supplement use with doctors, as some supplements may cause potentially harmful interactions with certain medications.
Become a more positive person Learned optimism can be beneficial, helping to minimize feelings of depression, reduce stress levels and possibly improve physical health. According to a controlled study by the University of Pennsylvania’s Martin Seligman, Ph.D., and Gregory Buchanan, Ph.D., incoming university freshmen who participated in a workshop on cognitive coping skills reported fewer adverse physical problems over time and retained their physical and mental health better than those who were not in a coping skills group. This isn’t the first evidence that optimism can have profound benefits. In a retrospective study of 34 healthy Hall of Fame baseball players who were on teams between 1900 and 1950, the known optimists lived longer. Survival rates for optimistic cancer patients are higher than for those who are hopeless. Optimists are also better equipped to handle stress and manage incidents that would incite anxiety. Although there are plenty of people who seem to be eternally optimistic, optimism is not an inherited trait. Changing perceptions and teaching oneself to be more optimistic is possible. Being an optimist doesn’t mean turning a blind eye to problems or expecting everything to be easy. Being optimistic means learning from situations and recognizing that obstacles are there for a purpose. Men and women hoping to become more optimistic
can employ the following strategies. * Stop and embrace a positive event. Take time to mull over something good that has happened and take credit for your involvement. Mentally categorize this feeling for later when you need an example of the way optimism makes you feel. * Surround yourself with optimists. Hang out with people who have a sunny view on life rather than those who bring you down or commiserate. Learning from example can help you develop more positive thinking patterns. * Believe you can and will succeed. When approaching something new, don’t set yourself up for failure. Go into it with the vision that you will thrive. Even if you don’t succeed as planned, you can use the opportunity as a learning experience and set a new plan to tackle. * Erase negative phrases from your vocabulary. Using the terms “I can’t” or “It’s impossible” is a recipe for failure. * Avoid complaints. Complaining does little more than make the person complaining feel even worse and could bring down the people around you. Because it won’t solve
anything, there really is nothing productive about it. If you must get your feelings out, write them in a book and then tuck that book away. * Take care of your body. You certainly can’t be positive if you aren’t feeling 100 percent. A well-balanced diet, routine exercise, sufficient rest, and finding time to go outdoors and get some fresh air and sunshine can help keep a person on a positive path. * Get involved. Spending too much time isolated and alone can eventually degrade anyone’s feelings of well-being. Take the time to meet with people outside of your family and engage in different activities that take your mind off of stressors. People who are busy in a good way are more inclined to see the brighter side of life. * Practice positive affirmations. Tell yourself good things. Receiving praise is something that instantly can put a person in a good mood. Instead of waiting for praise from others, give yourself a pat on the back every day. * Realize that things don’t happen overnight. Becoming more optimistic will take time, but it can be done. Don’t be discouraged if it takes a little more time than you expected. Living longer and more productively comes partially from being an optimistic person and making the best of every situation.

Police warn residents about ‘ruse entry’ crimes DOWNERS GROVE – Downers Grove police issued a statement Aug. 29 warning residents of a scam being used by criminals to enter homes and commit theft. In two recent incidents in a neighboring community, residents said that a man or men came to their home claiming to be installing underground pipes in the area, but later stole valuables after being allowed to enter the homes, according to Downers Grove police. The suspects are described as male, between the ages of 30 to 40, clean-shaven, dark hair, stocky build, approximately 5-foot-10, and wearing construction type clothing. They left the scene in a dark-colored sedan. Police reminded residents to be cautious when allowing unknown people to enter their home. Anyone with suspicion or concern whether the person at their door is legitimate should immediately call 911, police said.

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA DOWNERS GROVE – Downers Grove police are looking for a man who allegedly exposed himself to a child at 2:45 p.m. Monday near Highland and Warren avenues. Police said the child was walking downtown and was approached by a man driving a navy blue late ’90s twodoor vehicle with a custom exhaust system. The man briefly spoke to the child, at which time the child observed that the man was exposing himself, police said.
The child retrieved his cellphone and the man left the scene, driving westbound on Warren from Highland. The man is described as white in his late 20s or early 30s, heavy set, with brown hair, some facial hair and blue eyes. Anyone with information regarding this case should contact the Downers Grove Police Department at 630-434-5600. Downers Grove police reminded all parents and children to always be aware of their surroundings and to contact the police department any time suspicious activity is observed.

when most every house has a garage or driveway? If the village charged a reasonable fee to park on the street overnight, say $10 or $20 per month, most people would probably put their cars away at night, while allowing an equitable option for those who don’t have a garage. This would also reduce crime because fewer cars would be on the street for thieves to break into. I’m sure the village wouldn’t be angry with the extra revenue, and with less
I think it’s outrageous in these tight economic times that Lyons Township High School district is gonna spend $21 million to move air conditioning units, just because it makes a little noise during performances. I mean, they can mic the actors on the stage, or the presenters. It’s ridiculous. Also, you have to redo a whole cafeteria that’s been there all those years and is functioning? The people are in there 20 minutes a day. I mean, this is big time bucks. Whose brother-in-law is getting the contract? I’d like to know.

Now that a new Illinois law permits DuPage County to charge us a stormwater utility fee on the same property that Downers Grove is already charging a stormwater utility fee, we are fortunate that at least Downers Grove has dropped part of the real estate taxation on our property as a credit, in effect, for the stormwater fee being assessed. But, when the county collects its own stormwater tax on the same property that Downers Grove was already collecting it, will the county cut the property tax that it assesses accordingly? Maybe. Maybe not. And exactly what will the county do with one or two new sources of money, and will we be able to vote on any of this?

Continued from page 9 Including his own contributions, Szafranski said he ended up fundraising about $7,000, nearly $2 per mile. Szafranski and the 14 other riders making the full trip departed June 7 from Savannah, Ga., and finished two months and 3,700 miles later in Vancouver, British Columbia. The volunteers stopped at cities in Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Colorado and Idaho for service projects along the way. Szafranski said his body met the physical demands of the trip, despite having not trained rigorously beforehand. “My legs are much stronger now, obviously,” he said. “The mountains were the most difficult, but they were the most rewarding.” Along the way, other volunteers would join their ranks for a leg of the trip, and Szafranski said the group typically averaged about 20 people throughout. The cyclists were supported by churches and community centers that provided shelter
“The mountains were the most difficult, but they were the most rewarding.” Steven Szafranski Downers Grove resident for sleeping and meals along the way. “It was refreshing to get the real-life view of the country,” he said. “Reading news, it can be easy to be cynical and negative about everything. But it was really heartwarming to visit these people. They invited us into their churches and homes and cooked for us and really just showed us love.” One of the stops included Moore, Okla. to help clean up after the devastating tornado that destroyed much of the town and killed more than 20 people just weeks earlier. Szafranski said he doesn’t think he’ll be able to take the amount of time off required for the trip again next summer, but, it will stop at a new Fuller Center partnership in Waukegan, and he hopes to jump on for that leg.

Neat Kitchen + Bar brings big city feel to western suburbs WESTMONT – From its contemporary menu to a modern industrial interior, Neat Kitchen + Bar brings a refreshing urban vibe to the western suburbs. Downers Grove South quarterback Jordan Skach rolls out to pass against Benet on Saturday in Downers Grove.
Mustangs moving on after Week 1 defeat By JASON ROSSI

jrossi@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – The final score doesn’t always tell the story. That’s the way Downers Grove South football coach Mark Molinari is looking at things after the Mustangs’ season-opening loss to Benet on Saturday, a day after lightning forced a postponement Friday. The Redwings had the advantage in every statistical category and won the game, 21-0, but the Mustangs were just a few plays away from potentially writing a different outcome. “On offense, we had a couple opportunities, but it
Passing: BEN – Jack Beneventi 8-of-14, 138 yards; DGS – Jordan Skach 10-of-19, 118 yards Rushing: BEN – Porter Ontko 17 carries, 162 yards, 3 TDs; DGS – Alec Arvanitakis 15 carries, 32 yards Receiving: BEN – Liam Cadman 2 catches, 76 yards; DGS – Javon Turner 6 catches, 75 yards
was a situation where one guy makes a mistake and it throws the whole thing off,” Molinari said. “It should have been a 14-7 ball game, but it wasn’t because we didn’t play our best.” Starting at their own 13yard line early in the fourth quarter and the Redwings leading 14-0, the Mustangs (0-1) put together their best
drive of the game. Jordan Skach hit Javon Turner twice for big gains, once for 19 yards on third-and-17 and then for 37 yards on fourthand-8 at Benet’s 37-yard line. The drive stalled thanks to a delay of game penalty and two tipped passes by Benet’s defense on third and fourth downs. Moments later, Benet running back Porter Ontko
embarked on a 63-yard scoring run that gave the Redwings a 21-0 lead with 3:17 to play. One last South drive went for naught. Benet rode Ontko all game and he finished with 162 yards rushing and scoring runs of 19, 3, and 63 yards. “They ran the ball on us a little bit in the first half,” Molinari said. “Second half I thought we did a little better stopping the run, but the bottom line is we had a couple blown coverages where we had chances to get stops and we didn’t do it.” The Mustangs struggled to establish their running game, partly due to Benet’s stingy defense. “We had a game plan that
we were going to establish the run and then eventually throw the ball, but there were a few times where the defense was lined up where we didn’t expect them to be and there were some missed blocks and stuff,” senior running back Alec Arvanitakis said. Skach and Turner displayed a nice report in the passing game, but a balanced attack will be the key going forward. Molinari said he knows his team can play better, and he expects improvement. “We just had some guys that didn’t have their best games today,” Molinari said. “We’ll go back and correct it so we can be better next week.”

Downers North dominates opener By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – Leave it to a football coach to find fault with his team after a big win. Downers Grove North dominated every phase of the game as it won Saturday’s season opener 45-0 over Lockport, but all head coach John Wander wants is for his team to play better in Week 2. “I thought the kids played hard. We played fast,” Wander said of the game that was moved to Saturday after lightning forced a postponement Friday. “But there’s room for improvement.” It’s hard to believe the Trojans (1-0) can play much better than they did over the weekend. Junior quarterback David Edwards accounted for four touchdowns. He had scoring runs of 2 and 3 yards, and finished with 51 yards rushing. He also connected with Vontae Diggs and Sean Economou for passing touchdowns of 32 and 42 yards, respectively. Gareth Jones added a field goal before halftime as North raced out to a 31-0 halftime lead. Charles Creamer (12 carries, 87 yards) and Kyle Leto (11 carries, 81 yards) added touchdown runs for North.
Recruiting news Downers Grove North defensive end/wide receiver Vontae Diggs had committed to the University of Toledo over the summer with teammate Richard Olekanma but recently reopened his recruitment. Via Diggs’ Twitter page: “The #Toledo twins have broken up. I am no longer a future Rocket. Thank you #RocketNation for opportunity tho!”
Creamer scored on a 34-yard jaunt and Leto went in from 11 yards out. Diggs also recovered Lockport’s botched attempt to field the opening kickoff, setting up Edwards’ 2-yard scoring run. Two other times North recovered when Lockport couldn’t field kickoffs, which was one reason why special teams may have had the most impressive performance in Wander’s eyes. “I liked the kicking game because it really controlled field position,” Wander said. “It gave the offense a short field and set up our defense by giving [Lockport] a long field.” Wander also gave credit to a defense that held Lockport to 109 yards and picked off two passes. “Defensively, Joe Hill did

Big plays not enough for Sentinels By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com WESTMONT – Westmont football players were excited to unveil the passing attack of new head coach Otto Zeman in the season opener. Unfortunately, the season got off to a rocky start on both sides of the ball. Westmont quarterback Tim Doll threw two touchdowns but also had four interceptions as the Sentinels lost their season opener to Herscher, 51-12. The game was played Saturday night after lightning forced a postponement Friday. The Sentinels (0-1) worked exclusively out of the shotgun in Zeman’s pass-heavy offense. They were able to connect on four passes of 40 yards or more
but struggled to sustain or finish drives. The Sentinels’ defense was unable to stop Herscher’s big plays on offense, culminating in a 90-yard touchdown run well after the game was out of reach. Zeman said there wasn’t much good to say about his team’s performance. “We’ll be better next week,” he said. The Sentinels got in an early 14-0 hole during the first six minutes, with the ball not getting out of their territory. The second Herscher score was set up by an interception on a tipped pass. The Sentinels scored on the second play of the second quarter when Doll connected with Deshun Williams on a 44-yard
touchdown pass. With the lead cut to 14-6, the Sentinels attempted an onside kick. But Herscher recovered the kick and scored another touchdown in three plays. Doll hit Daniel LoGiurato for a 66-yard touchdown later in the second quarter to make the score 28-12. But Herscher scored again before the end of the half to make the score 35-12 at intermission. Doll, who moved from sixth to fourth on Westmont’s list of career touchdowns thrown, said it was different experience running the offense in a game than it had been in practice. “It’s a lot tougher when you’re actually getting pressured, with defensive backs moving around,” he said.
The Sentinels had another long touchdown called back in the second quarter because of an illegal procedure penalty. After giving up another touchdown on Herscher’s opening drive of the third quarter, the Sentinels were unable to capitalize on two consecutive red zone opportunities. The first chance came after a 54-yard pass to Greg Pietrzak that got the Sentinels to Herscher’s 2-yard line. But the Sentinels were unable to get into the endzone in four tries and turned the ball over. The Sentinels quickly got their second chance when Anthony Powers intercepted a pass at the 11 yard line, but a fourth-down interception ended the drive.

North will look to defend its Waubonsie Valley tourney title of a year ago. “We have a nice group and the team chemistry is really good,” Wasik said. “I think we Matthew Piechalak – mpiechalak@shawmedia.com can be competitive and have a Downers Grove North sophomore Madison Sturm sets the ball during practice Friday. successful season.”
Defensive-minded Mustangs seek consistency By JASON ROSSI
Downers Grove South
jrossi@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – With a pair of defensive players and a trio of hitters returning to the mix, Downers Grove South has the front-row and back-line talent to go against nearly any team. The key will be how quickly a crop of newcomers can adjust to the speed, power and complexity of the varsity game. Two of the newcomers – Renee Kryk and Megan Muench – are
Conference: West Suburban Gold Home court: 1436 Norfolk St., Downers Grove 2012 record: 21-16, 5-1 WSG Coach: Trisha Kurth Top returners: Jess Faber, jr. L; Jen Graham, sr. OH; Cassie Lueken, jr. setters, and setters are the keys to running an efficient offense. “We are hoping to see good
things from the newcomers,” South coach Trisha Kurth said. “Our strength this year
will be our defense as it has been in the past. Our weakness will be that we are young and looking for some consistency in our front row and setters to build on the defensive team we have.” If Kurth is looking for her team to develop, it is going to have to do so against some of the top teams in the state. In addition to facing Hinsdale South in the West Suburban Gold opener, the Mustangs are scheduled to face Benet, St. Charles East, St. Francis,
Glenbard West and Hinsdale Central. Benet and St. Francis won state titles last year while Glenbard West and Hinsdale Central won sectional titles. “Our conference race is usually with Hinsdale South, and we are hoping for the same [this season],” Kurth said. “We never want an easy road. The more difficult the teams, the greater the reward is of winning. We are looking to work hard this season and face great challenges throughout the season.”
DGR
DOWNERS GROVE – Downers Grove North started the 2012 season 0-8 but regrouped to post a .500 record. The way head coach Mark Wasik sees it, the Trojans should be able to avoid a similarly slow start this season. “We have seven players coming back, so we’re certainly ahead of where we were last year,” Wasik said. “We’re still relatively young, but we start three sophomores that have experience.” Mary Helen Beacom, Leah Rogoz and Madison Sturm comprise the experienced sophomore group, but the player to keep an eye on is Katherine Mahlke, a 6-foot-2 senior outside hitter who has committed to the University of Michigan. Playing varsity last year, Beacom ran the 5-1 offense and set for Mahlke, Rogoz and Sturm. Sophomore Lexi May will join her classmates on the varsity level. While Wasik said there is always room to grow no matter the level of experience, having sophomores that have seen the floor can only be a good thing. “They were players with no experience last year and now they have a reference point,” the coach said. “Now you’re talking about sophomores that have

5 keys to a successful Bears season in 2013 Hub Arkush
So you want me to tell you what I think are the keys to the Bears’ 2013 season? With so much that is new, and too much that is old on this club, we could fill a book with keys to this season. So let’s start right there. 1. Can Marc Trestman in his first turn as an NFL head coach take an aging group of veterans, plug in rookies and key youngsters to almost every unit, and install and execute his offense that, when compared to what the vets had before, will be like asking them to learn to speak a new language practically overnight? The classic excuse made for quarterback Jay Cutler’s failure to produce relative to his unquestioned natural abilities is that in his first four years in Chicago, he had three
different offenses and three different coordinators. Welcome No. 4. Why will this be different? If Cutler blocks out everything but Trestman, and does exactly what he’s told, this just might succeed hugely. If he becomes distracted, frustrated, impatient, arrogant or any of the other states of mind he’s been accused of inhabiting before, look out below. 2. The offensive line is being celebrated for it’s four new starters, including the two rookies – Kyle Long and Jordan Mills – on the right side. If they can make a leap from one of the worst units in the league over the past three seasons to just average, 2013 can be a ton of fun. If they can’t, none of what Trestman will try to do will work. Newer is not always better. Clearly this group is more talented than it’s been in years with the additions of Jermon Bushrod and Long. But sometimes talent isn’t enough, and what we’ve actually seen so far is snippets of these guys against two of the worst defensive lines in the league – San
Note to readers: Hub Arkush covers the Bears for Shaw Media. Read more at HubArkush.com Diego and Oakland. There is good cause to hope for the best, but the jury is still way out on this one. 3. If you are more worried about the defense than the offense, you are justified. Julius Peppers, Lance Briggs and Charles Tillman are the keys to the success of this unit, and, quite simply, they are old by NFL standards. None appear in danger of dropping even half a step, and they can’t if the Bears are to contend. Argue all you want about the physical contributions Brian Urlacher was still able to bring to the table, his contributions as a coach on the field can’t be replaced. Israel Indonije was the second best defensive lineman on the team. Nick Roach was solid in his spot and Urlacher’s, when necessary, and Kelvin Hayden at least knew what he was doing as the nickel back. Regardless of how you replace all
of that, it represents so much that your all-pros have to be all-pros for the defense to succeed. 4. The early returns on Trestman are promising, and I’m very impressed by what I’ve seen so far. But the reason his hiring was such a surprise around the league and even a tad controversial in some circles is that this guy’s a different kind of cat, and not what any of us are used to in an NFL head coach. Because of his pleasant personality and professorial approach, we have no idea how it will wear or work when the time comes for him to get tough with someone, and it will happen. If he has to rally the troops or try and win one for the Gipper, will the players be listening, and, if they are, will it be with a straight face. I’m beginning to believe he can do it, but there’s still a lot of highway between here and there. 5. Every team in the NFL prays for good health, as do all of us as fans. For the Bears, it is an absolute must if they’re going to contend.

FANTASY FOOTBALL
Our drafts are over. Week 1 of the NFL – and fantasy football – season is upon us. You’re fairly happy with your team. The starters at most of your positions are no-brainers. But there are a couple that are tough decisions. Here’s where I might be able to help:
MATCHUPS TO EXPLOIT
Houston at San Diego, 9:15 p.m. Monday
Oakland at Indianapolis, noon Sunday The Raiders’ starting defense looked – how shall we say this? – COMPLETELY AWFUL against the Bears in preseason game No. 3, the only one that matters. But the Colts do have plenty of uncertainty at running back. Free agent Ahmad Bradshaw had offseason foot surgery and has been rehabbing, and, let’s face it, Vick Ballard isn’t scaring anyone. Even though the Indy offense might be one-dimensional early in the season, there’s no reason to think the Raiders’ defense can take advantage. Quarterback Andrew Luck and wide receiver Reggie Wayne are obvious starts, but you might also consider playing receiver T.Y. Hilton and tight end Coby Fleener as well.
Philadelphia at Washington, 6 p.m. Monday The Eagles’ defense allowed 27.8 points per game last season, tied with the Jacksonville Jaguars for third most in the NFL. After firing Andy Reid, the longest-tenured head coach in the NFL, who did they go out and get? Former Oregon Ducks head coach Chip Kelly, considered an offensive genius by many, but not noted for his defensive innovations. That bodes well for opposing offenses, and fantasy owners with players from Philly opponents. Even though Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III is coming off an injury, and saw no action in the preseason, don’t be afraid to play him in
Running back Arian Foster has a back injury that could bother him all year, but this should be a good matchup for him. The Chargers don’t look very good on defense. Quarterback Matt Schaub, not necessarily a fantasy stud the past couple of years, and Andre Johnson also have favorable matchups. This should be a bounce back year for both. Don’t be surprised if the Texans, on the cusp of great things last season, are a little more aggressive on offense this season after playing conservatively in recent years. If you’re pressed for a running back and own Ben Tate, you might want to play him even though he’s not expected to start. With Foster’s injury, Tate will get some carries, including possibly on the goal line.

this matchup. There might be a slight risk, but the potential upside is huge. And even though Pierre Garcon, coming off a torn ligament in 2012, wasn’t among anyone’s list of top 30 fantasy receivers heading into 2013, start him in Week One in this matchup. Running back Alfred Morris and tight end Fred Davis are no-brainers. If you own either of them, make sure they’re in your lineup.

Let’s give a hand for grandparents Create a handprint craft for Grandparents Day By Melissa Erickson More Content Now
Grammy and Gramps or Nana and Papa or Bubbe and Gpa. Whatever you call your grandmother and grandfather, they love you and you love them back. Sept. 8 is Grandparents Day, a special day to show how much you care. Now’s the time to get started on a project to give them along with a
great big hug. Your handprints set permanently in plaster — a dry powder that’s mixed with water then hardens over time — will be a keepsake grandma and grandpa can keep close their heart in the house, by the front door or in the garden. Decorate it to show off your style, and it’s something they will treasure always. Here’s an activity you can try at home courtesy of Family Education Network (www.familyeducation.com).
Happy Handprints time: One to two hours plus overnight to dry level: Moderately easy What you need: n Newspapers or plastic to protect the work area n Apron to protect clothing n Small bag or box of plaster (the 8-pound box is enough for a stepping stone mold; you can use a 4-pound box for smaller molds) n Water n Mixing bucket n Stick or old spoon to mix the plaster n Popsicle stick or trowel n Plaster mold (stepping-stone size or smaller) n Small rubber or plastic glove n Paintbrush n Pieces of decorative glass n Clear acrylic finish spray
1
Place plastic or newspaper over the work area. Mix the plaster according to the directions on the box or bag. Pour the plaster into the mold and smooth the top with a Popsicle stick or trowel.
2
Put a small protective glove on your child’s hand. Press the child’s hand into the plaster to make a handprint. Remove the glove and wash the child’s hand with soap and water. Write the child’s name in the plaster with the end of a paintbrush.
3
Place the decorative glass pieces or marbles in a pattern around the handprint. Allow this to dry overnight before moving it.
4
Remove the plaster handprint from the mold and spray with clear acrylic finish spray. Allow to dry thoroughly.
