BATAVIA – For several months, Special Occasions sales associate Judy Yanatov has been watching as workers rip up Wilson Street and the sidewalks outside her store window as part of the $4.4 million Wilson Street streetscape project. She is trying to look past the fact Wilson Street and other parts of the downtown remain torn up. “It will look nice in the end,” said Yanatov, a Batavia resident. “I think they have done a nice job.” Yanatov and others who travel through downtown Batavia will have to put up with a couple more months of construction. With the exception of landscaping that will be installed next spring, the majority of the project is expected to be done by mid-November, city engineer Noel Basquin said. By the end of October, the resurfacing of Wilson Street should be finished, Basquin said, and new light poles also are set to be installed by the end of the month. The project, which started in May, remains on schedule, he said. Improvements include wider sidewalks and brick paver crosswalks at major intersections along Wilson Street between Island/Shumway Avenue and Route 31 (Batavia Avenue), Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant ramps at sidewalk corners, pedestrian bump outs, the installation of pocket parks at intersections, traffic signal interconnection and modernization, water main replacement and sanitary sewer rehabilitation. By early November, motorists should find it easier getting through downtown when the new traffic signals are activated. The lights will be timed to provide better traffic flow for the 20,000 cars that use Wilson Street every day. “The computerized system will adjust itself as the day goes on,” Basquin said. “It won’t eliminate traffic congestion, but will help manage it.”

Progress continues to be made on the Wilson Street streetscape project. The project began in May, and the majority of the project is expected to be completed by the end of the year. Access to Wilson Street businesses is being maintained during the project, and the city is working to minimize any disruptions. For example, the majority of utility work is being done at night. But Yanatov said the work probably cut into Special Occasions’ business during the summer because potential customers couldn’t find a place to park. The dress shop, on the corner of Wilson Street and Route 31, provides outfits for different occasions. “It did deter people,” she said. “There were some lean days during the summer.” However, Yanatov said the city has tried to help by providing customers with parking at the former Ethan Allen

lot a few doors down from the store. Atchara Khan, manager of Thai Village Restaurant, located next to Special Occasions, said her customers also have complained that they don’t know where to park because of the construction. “I think it has cut into our business,” she said.
But she is hopeful that the project will make the downtown look better. Khan said she likes how North River Street looks now after last year’s streetscape improvements. “I know they’re trying to make the town look nicer,” Khan said. Although the sidewalk along Wilson Street in front
of Batavia Library remains torn up, Batavia Public Library Director George Scheetz said he hasn’t heard any complaints from patrons. The library’s front door is on the other side of the building, facing its parking lot. “They can still get to our front door easy enough,” Scheetz said. “We are used as a destination.” Scheetz said he is impressed with how the project is turning out, including the installation of red brick pavers along Wilson Street. “I think it will really improve the look of the downtown,” he said. “I’m an advocate for what they are doing. It will make it easier for people to get around town.”

BATAVIA – Aldermen on Oct. 7 unanimously approved new rules regulating the opening of new tattoo parlors in the city’s downtown. They were considering removing tattoo parlors and piercing studios from the list of uses allowed in the downtown mixed-use district. Aldermen in May voted, 7-6, to send the issue back to committee for further discussion. The new rules will not affect the two tattoo parlors currently in the downtown, which will be grandfathered in as a nonconforming use. Fallen Star Tattoo is located on South Batavia Avenue, and Twizted Images recently moved from South Washington Street to East Wilson Street. Under the new rules, tattoo parlors/piercing studios are a conditional-use in the city’s downtown, which allows for the city to impose conditions. Aldermen also approved a regulatory ordinance that governs how tattoo parlors/ body art establishments can operate. The ordinance, among other things, prohibits the establishments from operating between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m. and prevents anyone under the age of 18 from being tattooed unless accompanied by a parent or guardian with written consent. The ordinance also limits the number of establishments in the downtown to two. Tattoo parlors are defined as those that apply permanent tattoos and not cosmetic tattoos. The Batavia Plan Commission previously voted, 5-1, to recommend removing tattoo parlors and piercing studios from the list of uses allowed in the downtown mixed-use district.

ayOneNetwork in Geneva, IL, is another example of how needed services are provided to those who require them the most. It is United Way of Central Kane County and the agencies and their programs making a difference in the lives of others. One of the programs provided by DayOneNetwork is Child and Family Connections. “We provide eligibility, determination and linkage/referrals for vital services offered to children from infancy through age 3 with developmental disabilities,” said Steve Taylor, Executive Director of DayOneNetwork. “This proven philosophy of early intervention and family involvement yield the best possible results, and often times reduce and/or completely curtail the need for costly special education services down the road.”
A
nother program provided by DayOneNetwork called Community Access, has empowered many individuals and their families in crisis the ability to obtain much needed support. Recently a family of six in St. Charles, including an 11-year-old autistic child, was able to obtain the in-home care they needed. “Children with disabilities are also at risk for abuse and neglect,” said Mr. Taylor. “This holistic approach includes early identification, family education, and support services which assist families in understanding and effectively coping with a myriad of scenarios connected with these kids.”
BATAVIA – Fermilab officials are bracing for a possible shutdown of the high energy physics laboratory if the federal government shutdown continues. “We don’t know how much longer we are able to remain open,” Fermilab spokesman Kurt Riesselmann said Monday. Riesselmann said he has not been told how long the government shutdown would have to last for Fermilab to be in jeopardy of closing.
The shutdown now is in its second week. The Fermi Research Alliance LLC manages and operates Fermilab on behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy. According to the Department of Energy’s website, “at most DOE facilities, all operations will cease once prior year balances have been exhausted.” Fermilab employs about 1,700 people. Department of Energy officials have said the department will be able to operate for a short period of time after Sept. 30, but that

if a funding resolution is not achieved in the near term, the department will have to shut down nonessential operations, resulting in employee and contractor furloughs. Fermilab’s online publication, “Fermilab Today,” already is a victim of the federal shutdown. On Oct. 3., it was announced that “Fermilab Today” would stop publishing because of the lapse in federal funding. “We are trying to minimize expenses,” Riesselmann said.

cluding mature evergreen and other trees. “There’s nothing like this around in this area,” Lambillotte said. She said the addition of the playground will make Peck Farm Park “an all-day destination” for families. The playground, which has been years in development, cost $650,000. Half of that was covered by a state grant. Lambillotte said $100,000 of the remaining cost will be covered by a fundraising effort underway through the Geneva Park District Foundation. To date, $80,000 has been raised. She said the foundation intends to raise an additional $100,000 next year by selling the opportunity for community members to have their names engraved on brick pavers at the playground. In all, Lambillotte said the park district expects to spend about $125,000 of general taxpayer money on the project, which she said is equivalent to what the district would spend on a mid-sized traditional playground.

GENEVA – As Sheavoun Lambillotte dedicated the latest addition to the Geneva park system, she recalled her childhood, as well as those of many others in her generation. Children in her demographic, she remembered, would start their days outside, returning home only to “stuff a little food into our mouths,” or to “get a jar to catch fireflies.” With that in mind, Lambillotte, executive director of the Geneva Park District, said she hoped the new Hawks Hollow Nature Playground will help today’s children rediscover some of those simple pleasures and reconnect with the childhood instinct to just “come out and play.” “This gives kids the opportunity to do what they used to do,” she said, noting the park district hopes the new playground will have kids “getting wet, getting dirty and getting creative.”
“I apologize in advance for the extra laundry you’re going to have to do,” Lambillotte said. On the morning of Oct, 5, Lambillotte and about 100 others including dozens of children, gathered at Peck Farm Park South, near the intersection of Peck Road and Kaneville Road, for a ceremony to officially open the Hawks Hollow playground to the public. The new playground includes some traditional playground equipment, including rope ladders and a slide off of a tall clubhouse-like deck, accessible by a long ramp. But the playground also includes more natural-feeling elements. Children can walk and splash in an artificial landscaped stream, or use their hands to paint on a wall using mud. And they can use sticks to rearrange or build up oversized birds’ or muskrats’ nests. The playground is built almost entirely of wood, much of which is repurposed from fallen ash trees. And the site includes much greenery, in-

Sixty years of art
St. Charles artist publishes book, talks about passion for art
By NICOLE WESKERNA
On the Web
nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Barbara Hoddinott is not shy about being her husband’s No. 1 fan. She has been collecting dozens of Bert Hoddinott Jr.’s paintings for more than 50 years, and she’s gotten quite attached to many of them. Each room of their St. Charles home features at least one of his paintings, and about 40 others are stashed away in a closet in their basement. Though he painted her a second one, Barbara Hoddinott still reminds him that he sold his original painting, “The Matador.” “I was distressed over that,” she said. “There aren’t many [paintings] I don’t love.” Bert Hoddinott, 80, is less attached. “One thing that happened while I was still in school ... I had a painting stolen and I thought that was the neatest thing,” he said, noting that someone had to really like it in order to steal it. Bert Hoddinott has been painting for about 60 years, squeezing his hobby in around the edges while running a resort in Canada and working for an advertising agency. The Hoddinotts earlier this year published a book, “Reflections,” which is filled with Bert Hoddinott’s paintings, which are mainly landscapes, boats, bridges and barns. It is simply dedicated “To Barb.” “I thought it could be something I leave my great-greatgreat-great-grandchildren,” he said. “There are a lot of stories behind each [painting].” He mainly uses watercolor,

pen, ink and oil for his work, he said. In addition to painting, he also carves lifelike birds out of wood and builds some smallscale models. He said he does most of his work from memory. Few of his paintings have
slipped into public venues, as the Hoddinotts usually hang onto the paintings or give them away to friends and family as gifts. Because he usually only had time to paint on the weekends,
Barbara Hoddinott pointed out that her husband often took his time on his paintings, and many are still unfinished. He slowly painted a portrait that he started in 1978 of his son called “Bert III,” in which
his son is sitting in a chair wearing a turtleneck sweater. “It took him so long ... he had to buy another sweater,” Barbara Hoddinott said. The first drawing in Bert Hoddinott’s book is his self-portrait, in which he depicts himself as a hand holding a pencil. “In retrospect, long hours at the agency prevented Bert from devoting more time to his avocation of painting,” states the book’s introduction. “In fact, the impressive array of pictures on the following pages makes one wonder where the real genius of Bert Hoddinott might really have been residing all these years.” Bert Hoddinott said he spent 40 years in advertising and said it was a fun career that he enjoyed. After serving for two years in Japan with the U.S. Army, he spent four years studying at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the late 1950s, where he majored in fine arts and advertising. He said he pursued an art education because “it’s the one thing I could do,” he said. “I’m terrible at math and spelling.” But Bert Hoddinott said he has had a passion for art since he was a child. “I had a speech impediment when I was a kid,” he said. “I guess drawing was a way to express myself without words.”

diner coffee. She liked the fact that it had a strong, bold flavor. I had high hopes when my pancakes arrived, and I wasn’t disappointed. As I bit into the generous stack of pancakes, I could taste the freshness that Ari’s Kitchen promised. The pancakes were light and fluffy, and the homemade cinnamon butter proved to be a great complement and made the experience even more tasteful. In fact, the pancakes alone had so much flavor to them that I didn’t even need to use any maple syrup.
My wife said she could taste the freshness of the eggs in her California Dreaming omelet, and how the avocado, tomato, bacon, onion and mozzarella blended together, each ingredient complementing the other. In a testament to how much flavor the omelet had, she didn’t have to add any pepper to it. She also liked the fact that the grits had a nice creamy taste and texture. In addition to a full array of breakfast options, Ari’s Kitchen also serves lunch, including salads, homemade soups and sandwiches. You won’t be disappointed visiting Ari’s Kitchen.

NORTH AURORA – Customers can sense the welcoming atmosphere of Ari’s Kitchen the moment they walk in the door. The new restaurant, at 362 N. Randall Road in North Aurora, exudes a homey and comfortable feeling. With gourds and pumpkins strewn around the restaurant, Ari’s Kitchen is currently dressed up for the fall season. Ari’s Kitchen serves breakfast and lunch seven days a week. The restaurant’s calling card is that everything is made fresh daily. The restaurant offers an array of options, so it took a few minutes for my wife and me to decide what we wanted. I opted for the pumpkin pancakes special, and my wife chose the California Dreaming omelet with a side order of grits. The first thing that my wife noticed was that her cof fee was surprisingly tasteful, much better than the typical

A stroll down county’s ‘literary lane’ By KARA SILVA ksilva@shawmedia.com A book store is a sacred place. It’s a relic of a less tech-obsessed time; an edifice of enlightenment; and vendor of one of man’s greatest gifts to humanity – the written word. And with book stores becoming more scarce, I deemed it necessary to seek out the remaining mom-and-pop bookshops across Kane County – I’d like to say for posterity, but more likely, for my own self interest. I’ve always preferred tangible book-browsing to scrolling through titles and clicking on book covers via the Internet, so I dedicated the better part of a Saturday to taking a “stroll” down Kane County’s “literary lane” – a handful of
independently-owned bookstores stretching from Aurora to Elgin. Stops included Culture Stock (43 E. Galena Blvd., Aurora), Town House Books (105 N. 2nd Ave., St. Charles), Books at Sunset (1100 South St., Elgin) and Elgin Books and Coffee (66 S. Grove Ave., Elgin). (I tried to keep chain stores out of this list, which is why I didn’t include Barnes and Noble in Geneva. Although, it is equally as important to the survival of the book store.) My scholarly saunter began with Culture Stock, a brick building nestled on the banks of the Fox River directly across the bridge from the Paramount Theatre. Culture Stock is entirely volunteer-run, and it’s a part of the nonprofit organi-

Town House Books in St. Charles is an independently-owned bookstore in Century Corners – a group of shops set in Victorian homes that are situated along tree-lined streets on the east bank of the Fox River.
KICK THE BUCKET Kara Silva zation L.I.F.T., which provides a creative environment for the Aurora community as a means of enhancing said community through art and educational programs. Such programs include poetry readings, M.U.S.I.C. Mondays, book-club discussions, art-therapy classes, Spanish-English language meet ups and more. The programs and events offered at Culture Stock seemingly fall in line with that of a community center, but its shelves also are well-stocked with gently used books at bargain prices ($3 for paperbacks and $5 for hard cover books). There’s a flurry of activity at Culture Stock. While perusing the stacks of books, VHS tapes and vinyl records – in glancing up occasionally to see picturesque views of the river – a sewing circle set up shop in one of the store’s living-room style seating arrangements; and children paraded around the room as part of a drama class or were occupied by a game of chess in the corner. The 25-minute drive from Culture Stock to Town House Books in St. Charles is nearly a straight shot on Route 25. The roadway hugs the river and includes a quick view of Geneva’s historic Fabyan Windmill along the way. The independently-owned Town House Books, which opened in 1974, is located in Century Corners – a group of shops set in Victorian homes that are situated along treelined streets on the east bank of the Fox River. Expect to pay full price for books at Town House, but also expect a healthy selection of new releases, best sellers and – of course – the classics. Town House boasts a bevy of brand new books shelved, stacked and displayed charmingly in various chandelier-laden rooms fit with oriental rugs. Its knowledgeable staff is extremely helpful. I handed a list of six rather obscure titles to an employee, who proceeded – not only – to deliver what they had in stock, but also offered to order the out-of-stock items. She also presented alternate titles

written by the same author. It’s near impossible to leave such a charming slice of St. Charles empty-handed. Town House also has an indoor-outdoor cafe that serves creative sandwiches, soups and salads as well as beer and wine. Portraits of writers adorn the walls inside the cafe, while the cutesy, cobbled outdoor patio is perfect for dining al fresco on a fall day. They also host book signings and launch parties for best-selling and local authors alike. (Visit www.townhousebooks.com for upcoming events.) Fifteen minutes after leaving Town House, I arrived at Books at Sunset in Elgin. The used book shop opened 14 years ago and is owned by the wonderfully eccentric and lovely Judi Brownfield, a lover of books and major proponent of all things Elgin. She calls her store, which is situated in a strip mall on the outskirts of downtown Elgin, “The ‘Cheers’ of 21st century book shops,” because of the relationships she has formed with her customers over the years. When I arrived, books bursted from every possible nook and cranny, and the store was in the middle of undergoing a massive organizational overhaul. Not the best time to make an inaugural visit, but Judi’s good cheer, optimism and passion for life in general, made it quite easy to overlook the momentary upheaval. Sunset also has a share-and-save credit option, where patrons can exchange their own books for points toward future purchases at the store. I walked out of Sunset with a copy of “The Complete Short Stories of Mark Twain” for $2.95.
Traveling five minutes down South Street into downtown Elgin, I couldn’t wait for a caffeine-fix at Elgin Books and Coffee after a long day on literary lane. Elgin Books has been around since 2005, but only recently moved from its former Elgin location to its current downtown address right along the river. The space is well organized and divided into multiple rooms dedicated to various genres. Cutesy cafe-style seating near the front window is perfect for sipping a cappuccino or vanilla latte (made on site) while reading one of more than 50,000 titles Elgin Books has in stock, according to its website. Unlike some used book stores, Elgin Books keeps a digital record of all of its stock on a computer, making the myriad shelves easier to maneuver. Using the store’s digital catalog, I found a used copy of the adventure/travel memoir “The Walk West” by Peter Jenkins – a title that I had been unable to find before visiting Elgin Books. After five hours of book browsing at four stores, I concluded my journey along Kane County’s “literary lane” with 11 books in tow. The journey left me with an enduring respect for book-store advocates who continue to tough it out – and find success – in a digital era.

SPORTS&REC By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Bridges FC’s soccer headquarters stand a long free kick from Geneva High School, a community that welcomed many former members for homecoming this past weekend. As Disney-themed floats and hoopla invaded the nearby streets for the event’s annual parade Oct. 4, the youngest tenants of 623 McKinley St. – all from out-of-state – fathomed a whole new world, as well. Thanks to president and head coach Bret Hall, his staff and their track record of placement in European leagues, aspiring soccer players find the Bridges FC amateur soccer team to be a tremendous resource. Although every member does not complete the familiar cycle of train/tour Europe/ sign a contract, they don’t undersell the importance of self-discovery, either. “At the end of the day, I think what coach and them look for moreso than you reaching a pro contract is how you become a man, you know,” said Devin Randle, a 23-yearold defender from Indiana. “How you live the rest of your life. How you treat people.” A nonprofit organization that first launched informally in the late 1990s, Bridges FC attracts what Hall and head scout/assistant coach Kieren Keane called “a good mix” of players with traditional soccer backgrounds and those who are underprivileged. A verse from Corinthians appears atop the Bridges website, underlying a faith-based approach. Brothers Roi Momo, 20, and Prince Lapnet, 23, come from a Washington, D.C., home in which their mother raised six children. Both live with Hall,
Sandy Bressner – sbressner@shawmedia.com
Prince Lapnet, 23, (left) and Roi Momo, 20, share a laugh outside the Geneva home they share with other members of Bridges FC, a local soccer program. Keane and Randle, balancing part-time jobs with intensive training at Palatine’s Soccer City or the Campton United indoor facility. In July, when the group took its annual exposure trip to Europe for a series of exhibitions against lower-tier professional Dutch, Swedish, Danish and German teams, Momo served as cook. As teammates dispersed either to Europe (with newfound contracts), back to school or home, Momo remained in touch, and not just about how to duplicate his spaghetti Bolognese. “You spend so much time with guys off the field that they become family, you know,” Momo said. “Not through just going to church, but house time. … At Bridges, you learn to care for people as more than
just people, but as your neighbor, as your family.” Hall, a former St. Charles High assistant and St. Charles Celtics club coach, said Bridges sponsor Brian Oxley of St. Charles allows tenants to stay at the house rent-free. Oxley is a longtime associate of Hall’s friend and consultant, Rob Keith. The house has held as many as 10 men in the past 18 months, usually around the holidays, when training hits its pinnacle as players return from college for winter break. There have been bumps along the way – Lapnet, 23, faced a date in traffic court later this month after recently driving without a license and accidentally backing into the front of a neighbor’s house – but Hall, acknowledg-
ing “stress on the neighbors,” said Oxley has been looking for bigger space for awhile. Bridges has appreciated open arms throughout its existence. Hall continually credits the generosity of Campton United for the use of its facilities and health professionals John Aikenhead and Richard Erickson for offering consultation at little or no cost. A Finland-based agent, Emil Furcht, also has been helpful. Aikenhead’s son, JC, is a former Bridges captain now playing in Sweden, a target area for the club given its blend of soccer talent and relaxed immigration restrictions. A number of former players return home to play in the U.S., including defender Rauwshan McKenzie, now of the Portland Fire of Major
League Soccer. Bridges usually has been competitive since its European tours began in the mid2000s, but memories of drubbings remain close at hand. “When you’re down in the bad end of a 6-0 defeat and there’s just no way to rationalize anything, if you still want to be a soccer player, then you’re a soccer player,” Hall said, “and that’s what we try to take those guys, is to get that experience. “As coaches, we hate it, but it’s a great experience for the guys. I mean, there’s nothing better, because then they can really set to work hard.” Randle personifies that ethic. A former prep track star, he attended Kent State for one year before returning home, deciding the sport wasn’t for him. He played one season of collegiate soccer at Illinois Wesleyan, and now is finishing his degree online. Randle first encountered Hall while playing for the Chicago Eagles, a division of the Christian soccer organization Missionary Athletes International. He remained in touch, and for that reason still is mindful of his soccer dreams. In a sport not blessed with the developmental structure of minor league baseball, all the better to have an ally. “It’s blown my expectations away. It’s just been a really good program that gives guys chances, second chances, you know, that don’t necessarily have the means or the ways of finding those opportunities,” Randle said. “It’s been great so far. The training’s good, the level of training is high, so it’s a good environment to come see where you’re at in the game and learn what you need to adjust, the attitude adjustment you need to make. It’s a big learning experience.”

DRAWING WITH MARK Let’s practice drawing a ship for expLoring! Start with basic shapes.
Following Columbus C by anne raih | More Content Now
Sketch the sails using the basic shapes as guides:
hristopher Columbus was a brave explorer who crossed the ocean in 1492 looking for a new world. Each year, we celebrate Columbus Day to remember the man who was one of the irst Europeans to explore the Americas. Columbus sailed from Spain to Hispaniola, which is now the Dominican Republic, with three boats –the Niña, the
Pinta and the Santa Maria. On the way over, Columbus and his crew battled many hardships, from storms and shipwrecks to diseases. But when they arrived in the Americas, they discovered a land that was more beautiful than they could have imagined, and one that was already inhabited by the Taino people, who had lived there for centuries. Take a look at the map below, and follow Columbus’ boats as they make the treacherous journey across the ocean.
Set sail with Columbus first, draw a line that follows Columbus’ ships as they sailed across the ocean from Spain. next, label each of the following names on their appropriate location on the map. If you need help, find a world map to use as a reference. Have fun curving the lines like a real sailing ship:
