Collector to exhibit David Bradley equipment PENFIELD, Ill. — Carl Davis expects more than 100 David Bradley tractors will be on display at Historic Farm Days, July 7-10, in Penfield, Illinois. Organized by the I&I Antique Tractor & Gas Engine Club, the show is featuring David Bradley tractors, walk-behinds and equipment, along with Ford tractors, equipment and trucks. “I’ve been collecting David Bradley items for about 25 years but I’ve been collecting John Deere garden tractors and all kinds of stuff for about 35 to 40 years,” Carl Davis said. “I’ve got a massive amount of stuff.”
The first pieces of farm equipment made by David Bradley were horse-drawn items. “He started making two-wheel garden tractors in about 1934 and the first ones were called Handiman and Handiman Jr.,” Davis explained. “And they were all on steel wheels.” In the early 1940s, the company started making the two-wheel David Bradley tractors. “They were built until 1958 or ‘59 and then they came out with a smaller version, the Little Handiman,” he said. “They made 11 attachments for it, mainly for people with gardens, and I have the cart
that you put out front and several of the attachments.” The equipment was made in a factory near Kankakee, Illinois. “In 1986, most of the factory was destroyed in a fire but you can still see the sign that says David Bradley Farm Implements,” Davis said. “That area is now called Bradley, Illinois.” Davis’ collection includes a 1934 Handiman walk-behind garden trac-
tor with steel wheels and a 1939 Handiman RT. “I have some of the rarer pieces of David Bradley, including a Tri-Trac which has three wheels,” he added. “I’ve got a lot of the smaller stuff like a cream separator, egg scales and pasteurizers that people don’t normally see,” the collector said. “There are lots of products sold through Sears with the David Bradley name on them.”

David Bradley collectors from several states are planning to travel to the Historic Farm Days. “They are coming from Kansas, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa and Missouri,” Davis said. “There’s going to be quite a few guys there.” Originally, Davis started his collection with a John

he noted. “So I would be at an auction and see a neat tractor that I thought I needed to have.” Now the collector has multiples of some of the pieces in his collection. “I have a nephew that is getting into collecting so I gave him things that I have doubles of,” Davis said. “And there’s another young collector by Peoria that I gave some of my attachments to.” It is important to keep the younger generation interested in collecting farm
tractors and implements, Davis stressed. “I’ve got a whole bunch of stuff that some day I’m going to have to do something with,” he added. Typically, Davis travels to 13 or 14 shows a year to display his items from his collection in many states including Missouri, Indiana, Wisconsin and Iowa. “I’ve been going to the Penfield show for the past 20 years,” he said. “But with the gas prices this year, I’m going to shows within three hours from my home.”

Family involved with selling Ford vehicles for decades FITHIAN, Ill. — Don Stallings has experienced a lot of changes in Ford car and truck sales. “My grandfather bought this dealership in 1925, so it’s been in my family since then — my grandfather, my father and now me,” said Don Stallings, owner of Stallings Ford Inc. “My grandfather raised 14 children out of this dealership, through the depression,” said Stallings, who is 86 years old. “We were in Fairmount where we had a DX gas station and repair shop and we sold new Fords under my
grandfather,” Stallings said. “We came here when my grandfather retired in 1949.” Stallings learned job skills from working with his family. “I laid on the greasy floor and asked my dad how to fix things and that’s how I learned,” he said. “I spent 30-some years in the shop repairing cars and when my father retired in 1980, I took over.” At the small dealership in the town of 450 people, Stallings has an employee who also has a long history of working with Ford vehicles. “I got my technician when
he was 18 and he’s been with me for 50 years,” he said. One of the biggest changes Stallings has seen with his business is the price of vehicles. “I never dreamed I’d be selling vehicles for over $100,000,” Stallings said. “My father sold vehicles for $800 and $900,” he said. “He used to trade with people and they would get a new car every year for $200.” A not her sig n i f ica nt change has been the addition of various features such as navigation, automatic steering and automatic breaking, which is

They didn’t change them for 20 years,” Stallings said. “It was my biggest seller, because people knew how to turn on the headlights, wipers, heater, air conditioner and radio.” The Stallings family has gone through lots of tough times, operating a dealership over the past almost 100 years. “But not as tough as it is right now,” Stallings said. “We can’t get merchandise to sell and parts are

Ford mechanic turns career into tractor, truck collection PENFIELD, Ill. — John Bensyl has worked with Ford tractors for a major part of his life. “I’ve always piddled with mechanical stuff and after I got out of high school, there was an opening for a mechanic at the Urbana dealership and the rest is history,” Bensyl said. “I spent 32 years working at that dealership and it stuck.” Bensyl has seven restored tractors including a Fordson. “The Fordsons were prior to the Ford tractors and I was able to acquire one and it mushroomed from there,” he said. “Stuff just kept following me home.” In addition to the tractors, his collection includes a couple of Ford trucks. “I have a 1950 Ford F1 truck that is the same kind I had when I started working at the dealership,” Bensyl said.
“And the same lady who had the truck also had a Model T that she was going to make into a yard ornament,” he said. “I said you can’t do that so she sold the Model T to me also.” Bensyl will display several items from his collection at the Historic Farm Days event, July 7-10 at Penfield. Organized by the I&I Antique Tractor & Gas Engine Club, the show is featuring Ford tractors, equipment and trucks. “I’ll probably take five or six tractors, my trucks and we hope to get a few cars, too,” said Bensyl, who is also a director for the club. “Some of the Model Ts were converted to tractors by taking the back wheels off and we have one of those on display at the Penfield museum.” When the Fordson tractors were first introduced, Bensyl said, the price was based on the cost of a team
of horses and the 10 acres of ground for hay. “They were under $500 when they came out,” Bensyl said. “Henry Ford designed the length of the Fordson so eight of them could fit in a boxcar to transport them,” he said. “That carried through into the later models of 9Ns and 8Ns.” In 1939, Ford started producing the 9N tractors.” “The war models that were produced starting in John Bensyl worked at the same Ford dealership for 32 years. “Tractor production dropped a lot during the war because of the materials.” Tractors made during World War II were on steel wheels and they did not have an electrical system. “There were kits available after the war to add generators, lights and to put on rubber tires,” Bensyl said. “So, not many survived in their original state like mine.” “I have a 1952 Ford 8N and that is the last of the

Vendors offer something for everyone PENFIELD, Ill. — Get t hos e shoppi n g l i st s ready! The vendor show at Historic Farm Days will offer something for everyone. “We are planning to have around 100 vendors — it’s going to be a really good show,” said Joann Warner, who coordinates the vendor show. Vendors selling everything from tractor and equipment parts to farm toys, crafts and more will be spread throughout the grounds during the show. “It’s all around the show. There are a couple of buildings that will have the toy and parts
vendors. We have a clubhouse and some of our craft vendors are in there and then some are out in the f lea market,” said Warner, who has been coordinating the show for 20 years this year. Warner said the products for sa le i nclude homemade items, l i ke candles and jam, to farm toys and parts, shirts and blankets, items featuring this year’s featured brand of Ford and even antiques. “We have a lot of vendors out here with antiques,” she said. There still is room for more, Warner said. Con-
tracts for previous and repeat vendors are mailed at the start of the year, but Warner said for those wanting to set up a booth, they can fill out a contract at the show. “I just tell them come out to the show and you can fill out the contract when you get here,” she said. And for those who get tired of walking around the show, one vendor has just what they need. “We have one vendor who comes out and sells new golf carts,” Warner said. The vendor show will operate during the same hours as the show itself.

Illini FS steps up to keep vintage machinery running PENFIELD, Ill. — A big draw for the Historic Farm Days is it’s not just rows after rows of static displays of equipment, but also features tractors and machinery in action. That all requires fuel and Illini FS has stepped up again this year to keep

the classic equipment running for the July 7-10 show. “We’ve been partnering with them for years for Historic Farm Days and also with the Half Century of Progress Show, as well,” said Brian Neukomm, Illini FS energy management specialist.
“Illini FS donates the fuel for Historic Farm Days. Growmark donates funds to cover fuel costs at Half Century of Progress.” The Half Century of Progress is I&I Antique Tractor and Gas Engine Club’s biennial vintage equipment show in Rantoul
while Historic Farm Days is an annual event. “It’s a neat show. They do a really good job. It’s a great opportunity for us to be able to help them out,” Neukomm said of Historic Farm Days.
“I would say 90% of those who run that show are customers of ours. Most of them farm and most of them buy fuel and agronomy products from us, and it just makes perfect
sense for us to be able to give back, so to speak, to help them put on a show. It brings a lot of folks to Champaign County and even the locals enjoy the show year after year.”

Shaff Implement in 8th decade at original location URBANA, Ill. — Ford is one of the featured brands at this year’s Historic Farm Days July 7-10 and an east-central Illinois was a dealership for the brand. For over 80 years, Shaff Implement has been located along County Road 2000 northeast of Urbana. The family-owned farm equipment dealership has remained at its same location since 1940 when the business was founded by Laurence Shaff. Shaff started the business after working for the Case Co., Goodyear and Minneapolis-Moline as a sales representative and founded Shaff Implement on the farm where he resided. In 1956, Norman Duitsman started at Shaff Implement as a high school on-the-job trainee putting equipment together. After high school, college and serving in the Reserves, Duitsman joined Shaff Implement full
time and worked there until his death in 2012. During his career, Duitsman worked his way up the ladder to the top as general manager and president of the corporation. Shaff Implement became incorporated in 1969. Randy Osterbur started in the Parts Department in 1972 and soon after was asked by Shaff to join Duitsman on the sales side. Osterbur and Duitsman worked side by side for roughly 40 years running Shaff Implement. In 1979, Duitsman’s son, Paul, joined the business as a top-notch mechanic and later became service manager and had a role in sales. Upon the death of his father, Paul Duitsman stepped in as the assistant manager working with Osterbur. Osterbur retired in 2020 and Duitsman was named general manager, became owner of Shaff

Shaff to take on the New Holland combine. He declined, saying Shaff Implement already had the Minneapolis-Moline combine line. So, New Holland pulled the contract. New Idea was big with pickers in the 1960s and it transformed into a larger Uni-Systems market in the mid-1960s through the early 1980s. Later in the 1960s a local dealership closed and that allowed Shaff to sell and handle Oliver equipment. Oliver, Minneapolis-Moline and Cockshutt merged in 1969 to form White Farm Equipment and later became AGCO when combined with Allis Chalmers and White. Shaff Implement was an AGCO dealer until 2012. In 1977, Shaff Implement became a Versatile dealer and 10 years later Ford tractor purchased Versatile Manufacturing Company and Sperry New Hol-
land, creating Ford New Holland. After the buy-out in the late 1980s, the local Ford dealer was looking to sell. With the purchase of Versatile by Ford, Shaff Implement was concerned it may lose the Versatile brand. So, Shaff Implement purchased the Ford dealership and created Shaff Ford Machinery, located about five miles west of the Shaff Implement headquarters. With these changes, Shaff Implement once again became a New Holland dealer. Shaff Machinery operated until 2020 when it was moved to the new dealership at one location. Today, Shaff Implement continues at its original location and carries some of the original brands that built the way for the business — Versatile, New Holland, Kuhn-Krause, Salford, Bush Hog, Westfield AGI, J & M, Unverferth, Walker mowers and several other short line opportunities.

Popular Ford 8N top prize in raffle PENFIELD, Ill. — The Ford 8N tractor was introduced in 1947 and quickly became one of the most popular farm tractors in North America. The 8N was the last of N series tractors built by Ford beginning in 1939. The first was the 9N, made through 1942, and its successor, 2N, built through 1947. The Ford 8N was a refinement of the 9N and 2N tractors with more power and an improved transmission. Over 530,000 units of the 8N were sold through 1952 when it was discontinued. Folks can have chance to win a Ford 8N tractor with
a V8 conversion and Sherman transmission during this year’s Historic Farm Days. Only 400 $100 tickets will be sold for the drawing at 2 p.m. on July 10 with the top prize being the Ford 8N. Second prize is $300 cash, third is $200 and fourth is $100. Proceeds from the drawing go to the I&I Antique Tractor and Gas Engine Club. The annual drawing is a major fundraiser for the club and features a classic tractor as the year’s featured brand. “Typically, someone in the club will have contacts with someone that has a

Menu favorites return to Historic Farm Days food court PENFIELD, Ill. — A Historic Farm Days food favorite will return this year to the food court lineup. “I said who wants ham and beans? Is that something we could live without? And the people at the show said absolutely not,” said Debbie Deremiah, food vendor coordinator for Historic Farm Days. From breakfast to lunch to dinner and snacks, guests and exhibitors at Historic Farm Days will have a veritable buffet of food choices from 10 different food vendors. Breakfast is said to be the most important meal of the day and that is especially true at Historic Farm Days. Food vendors get an early start. “The breakfast vendors get there about 5 a.m. and they are ready to serve by 6 a.m. We’ve got people coming from Indiana to the show so they are hungry on a different schedule, but we are
ready for them,” Deremiah said. As far as breakfast options go, guests can choose from something sweet to something hearty. “We have warm glazed or iced cinnamon buns. We have another vendor who does sausage, pancakes and eggs and a third vendor with biscuits and gravy. You can eat something different for breakfast every day of the show,” Deremiah said. Deremiah and the team at Missions R Us have taken on the task of cooking and serving a traditional show favorite — ham and beans. After a fire destroyed the equipment belonging to the group that had been preparing the popular dish, Deremiah said she polled people at the show about the dish. “I asked at the show, I said tell me about ham and beans, because I don’t eat them,” Deremiah said. The response convinced her that ham and beans needed to

continue to be served at the show. So, Deremiah and others at the Missions R Us group got busy cooking. “We did it last year and it was a success,” Deremiah said. The group also serves up sloppy joe sandwiches and a selection of pies, warmed up and served with ice cream. “Pie is always a big hit with farmers,” Deremiah said. When it comes to snacks, ev-
erything from ice cream to popcorn is available. “Sidney Dairy Barn comes with the Moo Mobile,” Deremiah said. The Moo Mobile is owned and operated by Dennis Riggs, who owns the Sidney Dairy Barn. The Moo Mobile is an RV painted to resemble a Holstein cow. Out of the Moo Mobile, Riggs serves a variety of ice cream flavors and creations, including one tailored for the Historic Farm Days Show. “He comes up with something that is the color of the show, whatever brand of tractor they are featuring at the show that year,” Deremiah said. Grandpa’s Ice Cream offers made-at-the-show ice cream and root beer floats. Mom and Pop’s Kettle Korn Stop in Paxton serves up popcorn and kettle corn, with popcorn available in different flavors, including cheddar and caramel.
To cool down after walking through the show, Island Snow To Go will offer flavored shaved ice and Jojo’s Grill will offer lemon shakeups, in addition to pulled pork sandwiches. One newer vendor, Grumpy’s, returns for a second year, serving steak sandwiches and deepfried ribbon potatoes, with a wide variety of toppings, from bacon to cheese and jalapeños. Deremiah said vendors are open to serve crowds at the show throughout the day and into the evening. “We have a lot of evening activities. There are tractor pulls every day of the show. We’ve noticed that during the day, we have the people who are there and eat breakfast, lunch and dinner, then go home. Then a whole new crowd comes around about 5 p.m. to eat dinner and then they go to the tractor pulls, so we have two different crowds to feed,” Deremiah said.

Kiddie train chugs into first appearance at show PENFIELD, Ill. — The idea of a kiddie train at the 2022 Historic Farm Days Show started out simply. “It started out as a simple garden tractor that was going to be pulling a few barrels. Then it got out of hand and I ended up tackling the project myself,” said John Bensyl. Bensyl has been a member of the I&I Antique Tractor and Gas Engine Club for over 30 years. This year, children attending the Historic Farm Days Show will have the opportunity to take a ride on a train that’s their size — and looks very close to the real, adult-sized version.
“It’s hard to find something for kids to enjoy and we thought they would get a little kick out of this,” Bensyl said. It’s a project that Bensyl has been working on since January. The locomotive’s body is a Cub Cadet lawn tractor that was donated by another I&I club member. But when visitors at the show see it, there won’t be a lot that’s recognizable. Bensyl wanted to make his train as authentic as possible. “I did some steel frame work and cutting the barrel for the front end to make it look like the old steam boiler. We have a plywood
cab for the operator,” he said. Bensyl said he studied photos of old locomotives. The more photos he studied, the more ideas he had for making the Historic Farm Days kiddie train look like an actual locomotive. “Not too many of these have the working drive rods like you see on the old engines, running off the wheels up to a cylinder. I made that a reality

The drive rods work and the wheels push them so it looks like a real locomo-
tive,” he said. The locomotive also has a working whistle and bell. That also took some engineering. “The engine has a whis-
tle, so I mounted a little air compressor on the engine to supply air to blow the whistle,” Bensyl said.

Pork Palace proceeds benefit Ladies’ Auxiliary PENFIELD, Ill. — Visitors to the Pork Palace at the Historic Farm Days Show have the chance to do good while they eat well. “The proceeds from the Pork Palace food sales go to the I&I Ladies’ Auxiliary. They use those proceeds to buy tables, chairs and other supplies the club needs,” said Chuck Stelter, president of the I&I Antique Tractor and Gas Engine Club. The Pork Palace will be open during the show, serving up pulled pork cooked by longtime Pork Palace
cook Rube King. “They serve up a delicious pulled pork sandwich. You can put barbecue sauce on them or have them plain,” said Debbie Deremiah, who coordinates the food court for the show. Stelter said the Pork Palace has been in operation for around 20 years. “They have their own pavilion, basically, with the sign out front,” Stelter said. The Pork Palace is operated by the I&I Ladies’ Auxiliary and staffed by volunteers from that group.

Museum features farm memorabilia PENFIELD, Ill. — More items from the ‘50s and ‘60s will be on display in the household exhibit at the museum located in the former Penfield school on the showgrounds of the Historic Farm Days, set for July 7-10. “New last year was a pink stove and we’re
going to expand on that,” said Betty Bensyl, who is co-chairwoman of the museum with Jane Berbaum. “We had a lot of comments on that.” The kitchen area will showcase dishes from this era. “One of members has a nice collection of Jewel
Tea dishes which will be on display,” Bensyl said. “We have a wooden tabletop model radio and a Singer sewing machine that we didn’t have before.” “Our household exhibit has an old-fashioned kitchen area with several washing machines,” Ber-
baum said. “We are moving the mangle ironer that had been in the hallway into the household exhibit,” Bensyl said. “It has a roller that was used to iron things like sheets and pillow cases.”

A large variety of farm-related items, ranging from hand tools to implements, fill two floors of the building that once was a place for learning for students from the Penfield area. Most of the items in the museum have been donated, and some are on loan from members of the I&I Antique Tractor and Gas Engine Club. “Sometimes items appear and I may not even know what they are or who donated it,” Berbaum said. “So, then I do a little Sherlock Holmes work.” Occasionally, Berbaum will hold up an item at an I&I club meeting to ask members if they can identify an item or how it was used. “It is a never-ending pro-
cess for our museum workers to catalog the items that come in to document who was the owner and a little information about the piece,” Berbaum said. Visitors have the opportunity to see two very special items in the museum that are on loan from the Smithsonian Institution. “The first one we got is the 1961 International Harvester HT-341 Turbine Tractor,” Berbaum said. “The next year, we got the 1903 Hart-Parr tractor.” In addition to the two tractors, the former gym features a couple of additional tractors, as well as larger items such as a sheller, hay equipment and a couple of buggies. “The stairway to the second floor goes to the small farming items,” Berbaum said. “We display tools that might have been used for farming from the 1920s to ‘50s.” The four former class-

years old, and we have it displayed on a child mannequin.” Berbaum said. Another room in the museum is a replica of an International Harvester store. “It has shelving, and there are displays of all
kinds of IH things,” Berbaum said. “I remember going with my dad to buy parts at a store like it.” The members of the IH Collectors Club Illinois Chapter 10 staff this area of the museum during the show. “The club members like to gather there because that room has a nice cool breeze,” Berbaum said. In the corn room of the museum, visitors will see items like planters, seed corn sacks, signs and shellers. The I&I club uses the former cafeteria in the school as its meeting room. “On the walls of that room we have posters and memorabilia from the Historic Farm Days from the beginning and also the Half Century of Progress show since day one,” Berbaum said. “There is lots of stuff to look at in that room.” Visitors to the show also

have the opportunity to tour the former Penfield Methodist Church on the showgrounds. “We are going to enhance the church with a few activities,” Berbaum said. “We want to entice a few more people inside the church.” In the past, displays in the church have featured crosses, nativity sets, hymn books, Bibles and Christmas ornaments. “We always have some church plates on display,” Bensyl said. Berbaum has been involved with the ladies auxiliary since it was started. “My husband, Dave, and his brother joined the club in the early ‘90s, and the men kept talking about a ladies auxiliary,” she said. “When Dave was president of the group, he asked if I would help start the ladies auxiliary, and I’ve been involved ever since we started in 1997.”

ATLANTA, Ind. — As farmers wrap up planting, the time to apply post-emergence herbicides is upon them. “It’s very important that we take a look at herbicide tolerances in the crops that we’ve planted and make sure we know what tolerances that crop has,” said Kalaher Chad Kalaher, Beck’s field sales agronomist. “If you take a look at our product catalog, page eight of the 2022 catalog gives a herbicide tolerance by hybrid trait.” It’s important to make sure the tank is free of herbicide contamination to prevent adverse effects to crop growth and potential

Volunteer mowing crew keeps showgrounds shipshape PENFIELD, Ill. — Historic Farm Days and maintaining the I&I Antique Tractor and Gas Engine Club showgrounds is dependent upon the dedication of volunteers. Thousands of visitors and numerous vendors from throughout the Midwest will attend the July 7-10 show and it’s the behind-thescenes teamwork by I&I members
and other volunteers that keep it running smoothly. Keeping the showgrounds mowed and trimmed is quite the undertaking itself. “Basically, every Friday the mowing crew gets together. We’ll have anywhere from six to 12 people show up. We mow approximately 35 acres and it usually takes us 2 to 2 1/2 hours to get
it done every week,” said Chuck Stelter, I&I Club president. “The mowing crew brings their own mowers. The club furnishes the gas and diesel fuel to the guys, but other than that it’s their own mower that they’re running.” There are not only volunteers for mowing, but also weed-eating, tree-trimming and other work. “Everything we do at the club
is done by our members and volunteers because no one gets paid for anything. Everything that is done, the maintenance of the buildings, everything is done by volunteer work,” Stelter added. “We could not make the I&I Antique Tractor and Gas Engine Club function or be what it is today without the help of our members and volunteers.”
Members and other volunteers also produce the wheat on the showgrounds. “We are using some of our members’ equipment and everything to do it. We buy the seed, but then the ground is tilled by a member, the wheat is sown by a member, all of that is also by members and volunteers,” Stelter noted.
Abraham Lincoln portrayer featured in National Geographic PENFIELD, Ill. — “Abraham Lincoln” can add something else to his résumé. Randy Duncan, who will once again portray the 16th president at Historic Farm Days, was among the “Abes Across America” featured in a story in the April 2022 National Geographic. The photo essay by Greta Pratt and written by Hicks Wogan, fo-

cused on the annual conference of the Association of Lincoln Presenters, held last year in Decatur. The association membership includes 95 Lincoln portrayers from 32 states. Duncan was among the 30 Lincolns in a group photo snapped during the conference, all in their 16th president attire. He was also one of eight featured in-
dividually in Pratt’s photos. Pratt asked the portrayers, “Why Lincoln?” “Lincoln brings out the best in me. He probes the patriotism of each of us,” Duncan said in the National Geographic story. A Carlinville resident, Duncan has been portraying Lincoln for over 20 years. During the Historic Farm Days,
Duncan’s Lincoln will be at the log cabin on the I&I Antique Tractor and Gas Engine Club showgrounds. The restored cabin was recovered during the demolition of a house that had been built around it and the site of an early Champaign County post office. It took several years to recreate missing pieces and reassemble the cabin to its original appearance.
During the summer 2005 show, the club’s sawmill supplied the rough lumber to complete the installation of the cabin’s floor. A little “window dressing” around the cabin gave a good feel of how the post office probably looked in its day. The log cabin is adjacent to a restored one-room schoolhouse that was relocated to the showgrounds in 2016 from the Rantoul area.

Forest preserve site of early Historic Farm Days shows ALVIN, Ill. — As the nation was celebrating its bicentennial, five farming history enthusiasts came up with an idea that has since blossomed into a large organization and a popular annual event. Bill White, Harvey Phillips and Dave, Daniel and Richard Allison met at White’s farm south of Alvin in 1976 to form the I&I Antique Tractor and Gas Engine Club and do their part to preserve early farming methods and equipment and the rural lifestyle. The club has since grown to 350 to 400 members. “During the early years, antique equipment shows, and bragging rights tractor pulls were held at Bill White’s farm. The club also set up displays at area shopping malls, county fairs, parades and other festivals,” said Chuck Stelter, I&I club president. Club members initially appr-
oached the Champaign County Forest Preserve in 1986 about using an area at the Middle Fork River Forest Preserve north of Penfield to have the annual show. The land was cleared and wheat was sown that fall for the 1987 show. The first Historic Farm Days show was held 35 years ago at the Middle Fork River Forest Preserve. The then two-day event featured wheat harvesting, plowing, threshing and antique equipment displays. Over the years, the show grew to include a saw mill, blacksmith shop, tractor pulls and parts vendors. The show expanded to three days in 1992. The club was able to buy the 12acre Penfield Improvement Association property in 1996 which included the former Penfield Grade School and 12 additional acres. This was done through the generous support of club mem-
bers and friends in the community who held fundraisers and donated and loaned money to the club. The timing of the Penfield purchase could not have been better. The 1996 show as supposed to be held at Middle Fork River Forest Preserve. However, County Road 22 was under construction and was not going to be finished in time for the show and two weeks before the show the decision was made to move it the Penfield grounds. In just two weeks, the Penfield ground was cleared, the school was cleaned up and painted and all of the equipment was moved from the forest preserve to the new show grounds. Over subsequent years, club members made improvements to the show site and persevered through challenges. The school was renovated in
1996 and 1997. Other buildings were added to the show grounds over time, including a new club hall, sawmill building, band pavilion, pork palace, tractor pull track and grandstands, blacksmith shop, north shed, feature brand building, Methodist Church, log cabin and Maplewood one-room schoolhouse. Historic Farms Days was expanded to four days in 2001. The club has also faced some adversity over the years. The Penfield Improvement Association building burned in 1997 and was replaced by the new club hall. A tornado struck the grounds in 2004, destroying the north shed and damaging the tractor pull grandstand and announcer’s booth. The north shed was rebuilt. Over the years, the club grounds have grown to approximately 120 acres.
