Feedback sought for University of Illinois variety testing program

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — The 88-year-old University of Illinois Variety Testing Program is being reevaluated through feedback from

stakeholders. “Due to diminishing enrollments of crop hybrids/ varieties in this program, we are reassessing how this program is conducted and the perceived utility of the information pro -

duced in order to best serve the agricultural stakeholders of Illinois,” the U of I Extension stated in an email.

“It is always our goal to allocate the resources available to us in the most

efficient manner possible in order to maximize the amount of useful research information that is provided to our stakeholders.

“We want to know what you think about the cur -

rent state of the Illinois Variety Testing Program as well has how it may be changed in order to best serve your needs.”

Darin Joos, Department of Crop Sciences principal research agronomist and

variety testing program lead, will be taking a new position at the Crop Sciences Research Center and stressed the need for feedback.

“I sent out a survey Dec. 5 to different companies and we’re going to send a little different survey to farmers so we can get some input,” Joos said.

“Basically, I think internally there’s an agreement that we should continue variety testing if we can. We don’t know the structure yet, whether it will be fewer locations.

“I think there might be a request for funding to the U of I Office of Research because that’s the problem, there’s not enough funding.

“We’re in the process of trying to get some of those decisions made before the first of the year. Hopefully we get enough survey results back to get an idea if people will be OK with a reduced number of locations.

“If the companies say they’re not going to participate in eight locations versus 12, if there’s no participation, then we’ll make some decisions.

‘UP IN THE AIR’

“It’s still up in the air, but I think there’s an idea that it’s probably going to exist next year at some level.”

Although Joos will be in a new position, he said he’d “be more than happy to manage the data/public relations side of it and keep up with my contacts, but they’re going to have to find somebody who’s interested in doing the travel. I want to see the program go on.”
