The first village hall was erected at 2 S Main St. in 1906 and served in various capacities for 90 years until the current village hall was built in 1996 at 2200 Harnish Drive. The original building now serves as a community center. The village became nationally known for the Algonquin Hill Climb, an uphill race from 1906 to 1913, testing the mettle of car and driver from throughout the country. The winner was awarded the silver Algonquin Cup. Lake in the Hills, located in McHenry County, was incorporated in 1952, although it was settled much earlier, in 1923, when Federal Judge Walter La Buy moved to the area and began buying up hundreds of acres around what would become Woods Creek Lake, planting pine and oak trees, and eventually enlarging the lake, using mule power to dredge it. Lake in the Hills began to undergo further municipal development in the 1940s when William Platt purchased property from La Buy. In 1947 Platt and his family created the Lake in the Hills Development Corporation, opening up the area to the public by creating a natural hunting and fishing planned vacation community.

Eventually, the houses became permanent, year-round homes, and in 1950 the Property Owners Association was established for road maintenance and snow removal. The community incorporated two years later. Platt donated his sales office at 55 Hilltop to be used as a village hall. A new hall was relocated to 1111 Crystal Lake Road in 1959 and yet another village hall was constructed at 1115 Crystal Lake Road in 1992. The current village hall was built at 600 Harvest Gate in 2002. Since 1990, a residential boom catapulted the population from less than 6,000 to nearly 29,000. SISTER COMMUNITIES WITH RICH

COMMUNITY HISTORY LAKE IN THE HILLS AND ALGONQUIN

A lgonquin’s modern day development begins nearly a century prior to its sister village of Lake in the Hills. Known as the “Gem of the Fox River Valley,” the village is located in the valley’s foothills, and after the indigenous Pottowatomi Indians, Samuel Gillilan became the first settler, relocating from Virginia in 1834, and shortly followed by others. The settlement was officially named Algonquin in 1847, and in 1855 a newly built railroad encouraged growth, making it possible for farmers to transport their dairy products to Chicago. Algonquin incorporated as a village in 1890, becoming a popular summer getaway for Chicagoans.

Y our local library — It’s not just for books any more! The Algonquin Area Public Library District serves not only Algonquin, but portions of Barrington Hills, Cary and Lake in the Hills.

Now, in 2022, AAPLD offers something new! The CuriosityStream BingePass makes available to patrons a plethora of high-quality and engaging documentaries and nonfiction series, many award-winning original and curated factual films, shows and series on science, nature, travel, history, technology, and more that will pique your interest and pick your brain — all free with an AAPLD library card. In summer months, bring the whole crew for outdoor family story time. Computers are available for use at both library locations, as well as computer classes. You can scan, fax, copy and print, and use the Wi-Fi. Tech programs include 3D printing, how to use Cricut programs, and more. Some classes may be attended in person or online. You can even download magazines, newspapers, movies and TV shows from home. There’s a book club for every lover of reading, from elementary to teen to adult. Join a club for graphic novels, sci-fi/fantasy, romance, thrillers, classics, popular, fiction, nonfiction, or horror. The library’s new MakerSpace continues this year, with classes, drop-in projects, quick crafts, take-and-make projects, or just space to do your own creative thing. It’s a special room full of equipment like a 3D printer, laser cutter, laminator, die-cutting and embossing machine, computer-compatible electronic cutting machine for paper, vinyl, fabric and cardstock, heat press, regular and heavy-duty sewing machine, embroidery machine and serger, airbrush spray booth, and milling machine.

To celebrate the culmination of its first 100 years last year, the main library located at 2600 Harnish Drive in Algonquin, and Branch library at 115 Eastgate Drive in Algonquin, presented a look into the next 100 years with programs such as Send a Postcard to Space, for kids; Fandom Fridays: Doctor Who, for teens; and Cryptocurrency 101, for adults, with more throughout the year.

And, for the uninformed, the library also continues to be fine-free, even for out-oftowners.
