Batavia
Message from the City
reetings,
As the middle of the summer season approaches, I am reminded of two very high-profile events which residents, both young and old, may recall with smiles.
What traditionally has been the event with the largest attendance of the year for Batavia ever since it was first fired off by the members of our fire department in 1950, is the 4th of July fireworks show. Originally filling the sky over Memorial Field on Illinois Avenue to celebrate our nation's birthday, the event was moved over to the thennew high school fields on Main Street, in 1969. Ever since the high school field became a prime viewing area, and the eventual expansion of public space with the acquisition of Engstrom Park across the street, this site now marks over 50+ years as the place for assembly to highlight our fireworks tradition.
Commenced by our long-time Fire Chief Bud Richter after Harold Anderson, a partner of the Batavia Foundry on First Street, suggested that our town host a fireworks program. Busy highways had resulted in high accident rates over Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day, and Anderson thought it would be a good idea to have the fireworks in town so residents wouldn’t need to travel to see them. The idea proved very popular in Batavia, so much so that the total costs of buying fireworks to this day has always been funded by city-wide donations from local residents, businesses, service clubs, and fund-raising projects like this year’s city-wide garage sales. Thus for 70+ years our town has funded the fireworks purchase entirely with donated monies and not tapped any public tax dollars!
The Batavia Police Department reports that each year our 4th of July Sky Show attracts thousands of residents and plenty of out-of-town visitors who all marvel at the magic created in the skies over our southwest side.
Hopefully, as you read this article you have either just attended this year's show or you are about to. By sharing this history, I hope you join me in feeling a strong sense of small-town American goodwill that so proudly comes together each July in Batavia.
The other midsummer activity that has a special memory for many Batavians is the Harold Hall Quarry Beach. The background of the quarry is
filled with major American history. We’ve been told early settlers in our town quickly determined that there were more than a half dozen unmined limestone deposits adjacent to both sides of the Fox River south of Wilson Street. On the east side, south River Street from Laurel Street south to near what is today River Hills Cemetery there were said to be several sites that limestone was mined from. On the west side of the river, there was one very large deposit of limestone at what today is the quarry beach.
Batavia’s mining business profited from the rebuilding of Chicago after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Following the fire there was an immediate need to rebuild the destroyed city in materials that would not burn. Given the fact that some of the early railroad tracks in northern Illinois had been installed on both sides of the Fox River through Batavia provided a most attractive ability to ship very heavy newly mined limestone on train cars to Chicago. Thus, a very large mining operation began on the site of today's community swimming spot now known as Harold "Bosco" Hall Beach in honor of the manager who ran and upgraded the swimming pool operation in the 1960/1970s. Another face of quarry fame was the longtime Batavia school principal Sam Rotolo who personally taught what had to be thousands of local kids how to safely swim.
The Batavia Park District in recent years has completed improvements and upgrades to the quarry and now provides a fantastic location for family fun during the summertime. One final note about the impacts of the quarry is that its extensive mining operation starting in the 1870s and continuing into the next century brought with it many men from Sweden, Norway and Denmark to move to America and work at Batavia's limestone mines. Thus, to this day, we enjoy a very large population of descendants from these early generations who all still have last names ending mostly in "son."

Flag Day Monument ribbon cutting set
Mark your calendars for Oct. 1, 2023 for the Flag Day Monument Ribbon Cutting on the Riverwalk by City Hall. Fox Valley Patriotic Organization, along with the Batavia Flag Day Committee and the City of Batavia, are hosting a celebration for the $1 million monument that has been in the making since 2016.
The monument honors Dr. Bernard J. Cigrand, a Batavia dentist who has long been considered the Father of Flag Day. Cigrand spent his life teaching about the flag’s history and importance to our country’s democracy and freedom. This monument also honors Illinois Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, veterans and active military, and first responders.
On Sept. 30, 2023, the Fox Valley Patriotic Organization will host a fundraising gala to celebrate the completion and unveiling of the monument. Special entertainment will include Lee Greenwood performing his iconic song, “God Bless the USA” along with opening performers Coffey Anderson and Rachel Miller. Tickets are available to the public and can be purchased online at flagdaymonument.com.
Improvement projects around town
2023 City-Wide Sidewalk Removal and Replacement Program
The City of Batavia's annual sidewalk maintenance program is set to begin construction between June and September. This project aims to repair defects in the city sidewalk system, ensuring pedestrian safety and reducing liability for both property owners and the city. Defects that will be addressed include sunken or raised walks by 1 inch or more between sections, broken or separated walks into three or more pieces, or walks where 50% or more of the surface has deteriorated.
The program will take place at locations throughout the city that have come to City staff’s attention in the past year. Residents whose driveway access will be affected by the work will receive notification via door hanger a few days prior to construction. For more detailed information about the program, please visit www.cityofbatavia.net/projects.
Prairie Street and Wilson Street Intersection Improvements –Construction Starting this Summer
The intersection of Prairie Street and Wilson Street has experienced heavy traffic congestion during peak hours, causing delays and safety concerns for drivers and pedestrians. A preliminary engineering study showed this intersection warrants a traffic signal as well as capacity improvements including additional turn lanes.
The intersection project will include traffic signals, pavement widening, new left-hand turn lanes, and pedestrian actuators on each leg of the intersection. Pavement will either be reconstructed or resurfaced within the project limits with new concrete curb and gutter. Sidewalks will be
replaced within most of the project limits along South Prairie Street and portions of Wilson Street. The proposed design and engineering plans will include the improvements required to interconnect the new traffic signal to the existing traffic signal interconnect system at Wilson Street and Route 25 and throughout the downtown Wilson Street corridor. Utility work will include improvements to the storm sewer system and complete replacement of the water main within the construction limits.
Part of the challenge to this project will be the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) railway single track which crosses both Prairie and Wilson Street just east of Prairie Street. Because of the proposed traffic signal and BNSF track crossings railroad protective devices will need to be upgraded. In conjunction with the new traffic signal, pre-signals will be installed south of the crossing on Prairie Street. Roadway gates and flashers will be installed at all quadrants of the crossings in advance of the crossings in all directions.
The intersection improvement project at Prairie Street and Wilson Street is an essential project for the City of Batavia, and the City is pleased to report that construction will be starting in August 2023. The project is slated to be completed in November 2024.
The City of Batavia appreciates your patience and understanding during the construction process, and staff will do their best to minimize any inconvenience to the community.
Follow updates on this project on the project website: cityofbatavia.net/ prairiewilson.
The City of Batavia has adopted an updated Bike and Pedestrian Plan that creates a path to planning an efficient, comprehensive, and connected network of roadways.
The Batavia City Council voted unanimously in March to adopt the plan which was developed with the assistance of the Active Transportation Alliance and Ride Illinois. The 62-page plan reflects the results of a working group comprised of city staff, members of the Batavia Bicycle Commission, and representatives from the Batavia School District, Park District, Chamber of Commerce, and MainStreet.
The planning process also included public outreach and participation in open houses, stakeholder meetings, public surveys, site visits, and a project website.
“The resulting plan envisions a network of roadways which all users, regardless of age, ability and mode of transportation, are safe and comfortable,” said Batavia City Administrator Laura Newman. “The result will be improved health and happiness, a cleaner environment, a vibrant local economy, and better access to opportunities for everyone.”
The Batavia Bike and Pedestrian Plan updates the 2007 Bike Plan which
Batavia City Council approves
Updated bike and pedestrian plan
also aimed to make the city a safer and more welcoming destination for bicycling. The new plan includes recommended road and intersection improvements that incorporate modern best practices in bikeway, pedestrian, and intersection design; ideas for programs and policies to encourage more people to walk and bike; and actions for the city and its partners to advance and prioritize implementation.
Plan objectives, which can be undertaken over time, aim to bring the city closer to the vision:
• Improve pedestrian and bicycle connectivity across Batavia without changing the city’s unique character.
• Enable all pedestrians, bicyclists, and passengers to feel safe and comfortable on streets, sidewalks, paths, and trails.
• Provide low-stress access for pedestrians and bicyclists to community destinations, downtown, trails, and other local amenities.
• Create a stronger, healthier sense of community and connections.
• Promote increased walking and bicycling to support a cleaner environment, better health, less traffic congestion, reduced wear on streets, and a vibrant local economy.
• Keep Batavia an attractive place to live where people have options for traveling throughout the community.
The plan provides key recommendations to achieve these goals. Included in those recommendations for local roads are:
• Enhance pedestrian mobility by installing sidewalks on at least one side of each street, prioritizing those around schools, parks, bus stops, and the central business district.
• Build on the existing network of off-street trails, side paths, and local bikeways to create a connected bicycle network.
• Continue to increase connectivity between neighborhoods and developments for pedestrians and bicyclists to minimize short-distance trips by motor vehicles.
• Increase pedestrian and bicycle visibility and safety at school and park crossings and in business districts with high visibility crosswalks, curb bump-outs, pedestrian and bicyclist signage, and other traffic calming enhancements.
The recommended plan for state and county roads includes forging partnerships with other roadway jurisdictions to create continuous and context-appropriate pedestrian and bicycle routes.

Batavia has a new waste hauler
The Batavia City Council voted in May to award a contract to Groot Industries for refuse and recycling for residents. Beginning July 1, Groot provides weekly pickups of refuse and recycling toters only. The sticker program for regular household refuse has been eliminated. Groot does offer dedicated yard waste toters at seasonal rates and individual yard waste collection stickers. For the latest details on the new
program, please visit cityofbatavia.net/ refusecollection.
By now, each Batavia resident should have received communication from Groot Industries about refuse and recycling services. If you have not, please contact the Batavia Public Properties and Street Division at 630-454-2400.

Batavia’s single-use bag fee begins July 1. To help remind shoppers to bring their own bags to area retailers, Batavia launched the BYOB* campaign in April.
Through a website, cityofbatavia. net/byob, social media posts, city newsletters, posters, stickers, and other materials, shoppers can learn about the environmental impact of nonreusable bags, as well as details about the fee, and tips for making reusable bags part of a shopping routine.
“We hope to see a significant reduction in the consumption of single-use bags in our community. This measure can reduce pollution of our land, air and water and will reduce the use of fossil fuels needed to produce single-use bags,” said Carolyn
Burnham, a member of the City of Batavia Environmental Commission. “To make the biggest impact, we encourage everyone to use the bags they already have when they shop.”
The retail single-use bag fee is 10 cents for any non-reusable bag provided by a retail establishment in Batavia that is larger than 5,000 square feet. There are several retailers that are excluded from the fee, including restaurants, pharmacies, and bags for produce, meat, and bakery items. For more details, please visit cityofbatavia. net/byob.
Retailers will collect the 10-cent fee, retaining 4 cents and remitting 6 cents to the City of Batavia. Batavia City Council Alderwoman Jennifer Baerren said the bag fee program’s aim is
collected in these fees decline year over year,” Baerren said. “However, with the fees collected, I will push with the council to fund environmental projects that currently do not have funding identified.”
In approving the fee, Batavia City Council Alderwoman Abby Beck said she is proud of Batavia for recognizing local policy has the potential to make progress toward a cleaner, greener future.
Get your free BYOB static cling decal at Batavia City Hall, Batavia Chamber of Commerce and Batavia MainStreet offices.
BYOB Campaign reminds shoppers: Carry reusable bags Curbside brush collection continues
Curbside residential brush collection is available to residents who pay the monthly leaf/brush fee on their utility bill. Brush/limbs are to be at the curb for collection no later than 7 a.m. on Monday of your scheduled collection week, but no sooner than the weekend before that. Crews will make only one pass by each residence. Brush placed out after our crews have passed will not be collected until the next scheduled pickup date.
The amount of brush that has been placed for collection citywide dictates how quickly your area will be reached, but each side of town is typically completed by Friday of the scheduled week.
The collections are for homeowner trimming and also meant to handle most minor storm damage limbs that fall during the season. Major storms may affect the schedule, and a notice of any special brush collection will be
posted on the City’s website. If your brush was out at 7 a.m. on Monday of your scheduled collection week and not collected by the end of the workday on Friday, please notify the Public Properties & Services Division at 630-454-2400 no later than the following Monday.
The following procedures must be followed:
• Maximum diameter is 6 inches (logs cannot be split); maximum length of limbs is 12 feet.
• Brush/limbs must not be tied, bundled, in containers, bagged or put on the street.
• Brush should be stacked into one large pile in the front/side parkway with cut ends facing the curb, and placed away from parkway trees, mailboxes, utility poles/boxes, hydrants, and parked vehicles. Brush will not be collected from alleys or vacant lots.
• Brush pile should contain only brush. Foreign objects will not be collected.
• The brush collection program is for residentially generated brush only, not contractor tree removals or trimming.
• Brush left out on the parkway between collection dates is subject to a possible code violation citation.
For materials that do not meet the above specifications please visit cityofbatavia.net/yardwaste for details.
If you have any questions, please call the Public Properties & Services Division at 630-454-2400 weekdays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. or www. cityofbatavia.net/brushcollection.
Batavia Gets the lead out
The City of Batavia has embarked on a $4 million project to replace lead and galvanized steel water services lines at various locations throughout the city. Once complete, water quality for residents will be improved by removing a possible source of lead in drinking water.
This is Batavia's first large-scale, planned lead and galvanized steel water service line project. The scope includes replacing approximately 280+ lead and galvanized steel water services lines. Most are full replacements from watermain to meter. Some replacements are either watermain to curb stop or curb stop to meter because the remainder of the service line is already copper.
The Illinois Environmental Projection Agency’s “Get the Lead Out” principal forgiveness loan will fund over $3.9 million for the project. The City of Batavia will fund the remaining amount.
Individual property owners previously signed up for replacement are
notified by the City no less than seven days prior to the service line replacement. The contractor will discuss the scope of work, notifications for service disruptions, and the impact on the property. The project is scheduled to be completed in mid fall 2023.
The City of Batavia Water Department has created a website for information about the project that includes weekly updates, an interactive map, and contact information for city staff and contractors involved with the project. Visit cityofbatavia.net/gettheleadout for details. To receive weekly email or text updates about the project, sign up at cityofbatavia.net/list.aspx.
This program is currently reserved for those that have signed up previously, however, if your home was built before 1955 and you’re interested in the program, the project may be able to include your home at a later date. The City is seeking funding for future replacement projects until Batavia is lead free.

Please note lawn watering restrictions
City of Batavia limits the use of water for lawn sprinkling to:
• Even-numbered addresses on even-numbered calendar days
• Odd-number address on oddnumbered calendar days.
• Watering must take place between the hours of 6-9 a.m. and 6-9 p.m. only.
Hand-held hose watering is permitted at any time for flowers, gardens, lawns, trees, shrubs (also deep root feeders), car washing and children’s wading pools.
Watering of new sod or seeded lawns requires a permit. Please contact the Community Development Department at 630-454-2700 for a sod/seed permit.
Newly laid sod or seed may be watered for 8 hours on the first day. For the next nine days, watering is allowed every day during the permitted hours of 6-9 a.m. and 6-9 p.m. After the initial 10-day period, new sod is subject to the same restrictions as all other lawns. This exemption only applies to new lawns. Adding seed to existing grass does not qualify.
Permits for sod/seed will not be issued during the months of July and August.
Water from a City water supply allowed to run off to ditches, gutters, inlets and drains during irrigation is strictly prohibited.
Fire sprinkler backflow systems need to be tested
Fire sprinklers are complex systems ingeniously designed to protect life and property from a fire. However, the complexity of their mechanisms, as well as the fact that they are connected to the municipal water supply poses some unique challenges.
One of these challenges is the dangers of backflow and the need for a properly functioning backflow prevention assembly system.
What is backflow in fire sprinkler systems?
A fire sprinkler system connects into a cross-contamination system, which is where water from various clean sources connects with contaminated or polluted water sources. For example, when a domestic irrigation or fire sprinkler system connects with a public water source, there is a crosscontamination system connecting them.
The water in a fire sprinkler system, as well as most potable water systems, is designed to maintain a constant level of pressure to ensure that it is ready to flow efficiently whether out of fire sprinklers, faucets, hoses, etc. Backflow occurs when water pressure unexpectedly changes or drops in the municipal water supply. This allows a reverse flow of water from a contaminated water source into the clean, potable water.
So, for example, if the municipal water supply suddenly lost its water pressure, water from the contaminated fire sprinkler system could backflow into the municipality’s drinking water.
What is backflow prevention? Backflow prevention, then, is the use of a backflow prevention valve to prevent backflow in the event of dropped or failed water pressure. The backflow prevention valve can be installed in the fire sprinkler piping where there is risk of contaminated water in the sprinkler system flowing back into the municipal water supply should water pressure drop.
Backflow prevention is the prevention of clean water in one system, in this case the municipality’s drinking water
supply, from being contaminated by dirty water in the fire sprinkler system. Why does it need to be tested?
It is vital that the City of Batavia’s drinking water be clean, potable water to ensure there are no health risks to those exposed to the water. If the drinking water supply were to be contaminated by backflow from a fire sprinkler system, it could endanger the health of those drinking from the water supply.
A proper backflow prevention system ensures that clean water is kept clean and health risks are avoided. It is for these very important reasons that the City of Batavia requires the backflow be inspected and tested annually by a qualified professional who is certified in testing backflow devices.
Testing required each year before using a lawn irrigation system Cross Connection Control devices, or backflow preventers, are mandatory for underground lawn sprinkling systems according to the Illinois State Plumbing Code. Each year before you turn your sprinkler system on you must have the backflow device tested. This testing is required on an annual basis, even if you do not use your lawn irrigation system. The City’s backflow program administrator, Aqua Backflow, Elgin, IL. will send out reminder notices.
The Batavia Cross Connection Control Program is designed to safeguard public health. The City asks for your complete cooperation with our program, its enforcement, and any requests for information that come from Aqua Backflow or Batavia Water Division staff.
Questions can be directed to Aqua Backflow at 847-742-2296 or you may contact the Batavia Water Division at 630-454-2450.

Batavia school names reflect proud traditions
Batavia schools are named for people who made lasting contributions over the years. Find out the origin story of school naming and the people behind the names such as Louise White, JB Nelson and Sam Rotolo at Batavia Depot Museum’s new exhibit, “What’s in a Name? Batavia Schools Edition” opening Aug. 4.
The exhibit gives insight into the early education system of Batavia before the school district was formed. Photos and artifacts from the Batavia Historical Society collection will reveal the history behind those famous names.
“The stories we are learning and sharing about the people behind the names of the Batavia schools are very relatable,” said Batavia Depot Museum Director Kate Garrett.
For example, Grace McWayne, a Batavia teacher and administrator from 1868 to 1927, had watched generations of Batavians grow from students to adults in her classes. “She was deeply in touch with her community and very well
loved by her students,” Garrett said. Grace McWayne Middle School at 3501 Hapner Way is the third Batavia school to bear her name. The first school building named after McWayne was razed in 1950, and the second is now private property. McWayne Middle School opened in 2001 and serves the community on the west side of the city. Her impressive career stretched 59 years, Garrett noted.
“My favorite story about her comes from an interview she gave in 1938,” she said. “McWayne described catching a former student who was then a local business leader and member of the school board sliding down the banister at West Side Elementary School.
“On being caught, he told McWayne, ‘all these years I went to school I always wanted to slide down that banister! I never got the chance ... because you were always around.’”
Tying faces of Batavia’s educators to school names in this exhibit is important to emphasize the human factor, Garrett noted, and visitors will

“When you have an institution named after you, it's an honor, but it's also a little dehumanizing. We want to remind present-day students that the schools they attend were named after real people who were honored because of the integrity and generosity with which they lived their daily lives.”
The exhibit runs through November.

TIPS & TRICKS
Leave your grass alone in July. It wants to go dormant in the heat of the summer; don't fight it! Trying to keep it green by excessive watering or fertilizing will only create a dependency on chemicals and water.
Make sure you keep up with your harvest in the garden. This will keep your vegetable plants producing. If you are worried about excess produce, you can share with family and friends or donate it to your community pantry.
— Kim Hansen, Director of ParksIt's Time to Visit Downtown
If there were ever a time to visit downtown, summer is it! In addition to our outdoor Farmers’ Market, Artisan Collective, and Batavia Boardwalk Shops, our downtown shops and restaurants have reasons for you to come downtown every day of the week. You can find our Downtown Events Calendar on the landing page of our new website at downtownbatavia.com and by following us on social media @downtownbatavia. Pop on now and plan a week of fun!
Cocktails in the Park

the event. Purchase your tickets now at downtownbatavia.com.
Cocktails in the Park has been Batavia MainStreet’s largest single fundraiser for the non-profit organization, which typically hosts city-wide events including Egg Hop, Dinner Table, Block Party, Bat Fest and more! Your attendance and donations at Cocktails in the Park make all the above possible!

Happening in Batavia JULY 2023
Batavia Public Library Find your voice
THIS SUMMER AT THE BATAVIA PUBLIC LIBRARY
Inside each of us there lives a special talent, skill or passion that sets us apart and makes us exceptional.
Some of us can cook, while others can build cars or planes. Some of us can paint or write, while others can design or act. The Batavia Public Library is a vibrant place, filled with ways to explore your hobbies, hone your talents, and discover your passions. It’s where we can find our voice. Summer Reading Club embraces all the ways you and your family and neighbors may find your voices.
For children, we have Intro to Improv classes on Monday, July 10, as well as painting, crafting, video gaming, chess and bingo playing, and LEGO building programs throughout July. And don't miss the Batavia Public Library Talent Show is at 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 27.
For teens, we offer a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate video gaming
tournament on Nintendo Switch, as well as crafting classes in July and August.
For adults, we have free crafting programs using the Cricut in July and August. Try your hand at another creative outlet with Sketch & Write with Kyle White, which is an interactive workshop combining art and writing for beginners, on Tuesday, July 11. The Power of Meditation on Wednesday, July 12, shows how meditation can be a simple way to deal with our daily stress and connect with the peace within us. Chef Kristyn Slick will bring us free online cooking classes on Wednesday, July 19, with a Summer Food Tour of Italy, and on Wednesday, Aug. 16, with a Summer Food Tour of Japan. Our voices can be powerful instruments. We can express ourselves, share our stories and advocate for change. Through our voices, we find empowerment. And when we feel empowered, there’s nothing we can’t accomplish.
NEW CHAPTER BEGINS WITH NEW LIBRARY EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
The Batavia Public Library began writing another chapter in June as we welcomed a new executive director.
Josephine “Jo” Tucci’s first day as the Library’s executive director was Monday, June 12. After 18 ½ years in Batavia, Executive Director George H. Scheetz retired on Friday, June 9. Tucci comes to us from Lincolnwood Public Library, where she served as library director for nearly four years. She served for 17 years at the Berwyn Public Library, first as a librarian and then in several managerial roles. She is excited to serve Batavians.
“Batavia is such a bustling and vibrant community, and I can’t wait to explore its neighborhoods, shops, municipal entities, and local businesses,” Tucci said. “I’m a very approachable, friendly person, and I love to interact with people. If I’m out on the floor, please say ‘hello.’”

What is the Batavia Foundation for Educational Excellence?
The Foundation is a not-for-profit organization with the goal of supporting the Batavia Public School District, its teachers, and students. The Foundation (BFEE) has a volunteer Board of Directors of local citizens who work directly with BPS101 to further the education of its students.
HOW CAN YOU HELP SUPPORT BFEE?
While we will not be having a major in-person fundraiser this year, there are many quick and easy ways you can support BFEE:
• Talk with your employer about payroll deductions or corporate matching. You may be able to donate a set dollar amount from your pre-tax income to BFEE every pay period, and/or your employer may match your donation.
• Honor a Teacher - Donate to BFEE in honor of a teacher, and we will send them a certificate to show the support and appreciation they have from their families!
• Direct Donations – You can donate directly to BFEE. More information can be found on our website, www.batavafoundation. org
• Sign up for the KCT Affinity Card – Give back every time you shop. Plus, you will get an attractive Batavia Bulldog card to show off your school spirit! Already a member? It is super easy to switch over to the Bulldog Affinity Card!

CHIP IN BATAVIA PROGRAM HELPS FAMILIES WHO ARE FACING FINANCIAL OBSTACLES
Our mission is to support students and families in BPS101who are homeless (temporary housing) or on free/reduced lunch. About 18% of our student population falls in this group. There are more than 1,000 students from low-income families that have a difficult time making ends meet. Some things we help with: clothing, food, gas, school supplies, rent/ utility payments, summer camps, quarry passes, field trips, prom drive, graduation gowns, mentor program, dual credit classes, school activities, and much more.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Annual Tootsie Roll Drive
The Knights of Columbus Council 2191, the local Batavia chapter of the Catholic fraternal service organization, is excited about the upcoming annual Tootsie Roll Drive. The drive was established over 50 years ago in the 1970s to raise funds and awareness for people with intellectual disabilities.
Every September, the Knights throw on their unique yellow vests, position themselves at the main intersections, or stand in front of stores with their Tootsie Rolls in one hand and a collection canister in another. The Knights will gladly accept spare change, dollars or even electronic donations via their donation campaign QR Code for the cause. In exchange for the donation, you get a timeless classic candy: the Tootsie Roll.
All the funds generated from the Tootsie Roll Drive will be allocated to a range of local programs: Markland in Geneva, Special Camps for Special Needs in Winfield, Fox Valley Special Recreation in Aurora, Valley Sheltered Workshops in Batavia, and Association for Individual Development in Aurora.
Everyone in the Tri-Cities is invited to participate in the Tootsie Roll Drive by making a donation during our collection days Sept. 8, 9 and 10. Your donation will greatly impact those in the community who need it most.

As students get older, they wonder where life will take them and what career options are available. By participating in FVSRA Connects, local organizations are providing a very useful service for students and enriching experiences for individuals with disabilities.
Recently, students in Batavia High School’s Adapted PE program collaborated with FVSRA’s Day Break Day Program to provide enrichment through learning, connecting and recreating together. Students enhanced their academic experience by facilitating hands-on
