New Tiger coach talks about passion for PHS, Tiger basketball Editor’s note: Kevin Howard becomes the 22nd basketball coach at Princeton High School dating back to 1921. His grandfather, Bill Howard, was the Tigers coach from 1943-47. He is on a long lineage of family members to attend PHS, including his dad, Corby (’64), uncles Bill (’60), Bob (’62), Tim (’68) and Jim (’70), his brother, Corby (’88), his sister, Katie (’89), and five cousins. BCR Sports Editor Kevin Hieronymus did a question and answer interview with the new Tiger coach on the eve of his first season. BCR: What does it mean to you to be a Princeton Tiger? HOWARD: Respect, loyalty, passion, brotherhood, selflessness, hard work, never giving up, teamwork, and of course love! That’s what I gave my teammates and that’s what they gave me on and off the court and they still do to this day.
What led you most in wanting to come back to PHS to be a coach?
HOWARD: I always knew I would coach basketball in high school someday. It’s what I’ve wanted to do since I was a little kid. I thought it would have happened sooner but trading and day to day life got in the way. I love kids, I love teaching, and I love basketball. The values you can teach kids by coaching basketball is what it’s about for me. I know in my heart I was put on this earth to do wonderful things that impact others in a positive way. Its my calling is all I can say.

BCR: Your grandfather, Bill Howard, coached at PHS in the 1940s. What do you think he would say about his grandson following in his footsteps 70 years later?
HOWARD: I think he would be extremely proud of me, because he would know exactly why I’m doing this. He passed away when my father was young so I never got to meet him, but my father told me he was tough and fair with a kind heart, so I think he would say, ‘Just be you Kevin and it will all work out.’
BCR: How much talk did you hear growing up about your grandfather coaching here and your dad and uncles? What kind
of stories did you hear? HOWARD: I didn’t hear much about my grandfather Bill coaching until later in life. I think he got out shadowed by my other grandpa,
Ed, who was undefeated at St. Rita in 1963 and won a state title and a Super Bowl ring with the Chiefs in 1969 as head scout. However, I always heard about my dad and his brothers. All five played three sports in high school and all five went on to play D1 football or basketball in college. The running joke
though was in track, they all beat each other’s record in the shot put or discuss as they went through high school with Jim being the last and best. .... My uncle Bill, who recently passed away last week (God rest his soul) was idolized by all of us growing up in Princeton, because of his success as a player.
He was the best basketball player out of all of them and a very good football player. He went on to play at Princeton University and become a captain of his football and basketball teams. He exuded excellence athletically and academically.

BCR: What was it like to have an older brother (Corby) that played Tiger basketball ahead of you?
HOWARD: Most of our talking was a 1 on 1 war in the driveway, generally leaving me bloody, bruised, and defeated. Funny thing is, he stopped playing me when I turned about 17 years old. Wonder why?
BCR: This will be your first coaching position. How will you translate your playing and other basketball experiences into the new job?
HOWARD: I’ve played with a lot of great players and played for a lot of great coaches in high school, college, and after college. I try to take a little piece from each coach I’ve had experience with because they all have something great about them. I think leading a team of traders since I was 26 years old has really helped me become a well-spoken confident leader that kids tend to gravitate to. My ex-coworkers always say that I could make them believe in anything and everything with my conviction and passion.
What are your biggest challenges for taking over this program? What plans/goals do you have?
HOWARD: Getting the kids to accept change. They are used to one way of doing things and now we are doing things a bit different. I have a vision of how I believe things should be done by my past experiences with coaches and teammates and my parents’ guidance and brothers’ tough love. I believe these kids will embrace it and I can already see them starting to buy into what we preach! My
THE KEVIN HOWARD FILE: • Grandson of former Princeton High School coach Bill Howard (1943-47) • 22nd basketball coach at Princeton High School dating back to 1921 • 1994 graduate of PHS (member of the Tigers Sweet 16 team his senior year, which won sectional at home). • He was the BCR co-Player of the Year in 1994, averaging 15.8 ppg overall, and 17.2 ppg in conference play as one of the top scorers in the NCIC. • Played collegiately at Wabash Community College, Lewis University and Benedictine University plans/goals are to play physical, tough selfless team play, but also do it with respect for other teams, coaches, refs, and fans. I want these kids to become better people through the process of our program.
BCR: You have surrounded yourself with two former PHS players, the Murray brothers, on the staff. How important was it for you to get coaches like that with the same background going through the program as players?
HOWARD: Very important! I love our coaching staff, the Murray brothers and Tim Smith, everyone is on the same page and we all have respect for each other. We all care deeply about basketball, kids, and Princeton, so we all are doing everything in our power to do this the right way. They all have been incredible through this whole process and we all believe in one another, I’m very lucky!
BCR: Let’s take you back in
time. Your team won sectionals your senior year at PHS, 199394, with a losing record going into the postseason. What’s your best memories of that season and your career at PHS?
HOWARD: We were a brotherhood. We hung out all the time and we would do anything for each other. We would go to the truck stop and have breakfast and play mortal combat every Saturday after practice or walk-through. We just enjoyed being around each other. We never were negative at any point in the season to each other or about losses. We knew we could play with anyone because of our team brotherhood and we all knew our roles and were extremely selfless with our play. Matt Mestan and I recently watched that sectional championship game two months ago. Dan Marquis having four steals and getting fouled immediately after each steal in the last 38 seconds of the sectional final game and missing each front end of the 1 and 1, but working through adversity and continuing to get another steal to make up for himself and his teammates. Watching Tim Forristall console Dan at the free-throw line and all his teammates clap and cheer him on was unbelievable. Dan did whatever he had to do to have his teams back. That’s how I remember that year, everyone doing whatever they had to do for the better of the team and never giving up!
BCR: What do your old teammates think about you coming back to coach?
HOWARD: They all love it! They have been instrumental in me taking this job. Every single one told me that “there needs to be a change at PHS and you’re the guy to do it Kev because we know your heart and passion”. They are all very supportive and have shown me so much love!

2018-19 ALL-BCR PRESEASON TEAM GIRLS
• Saige Barnett, BV (Sr., 6-1/G): The Storm’s shooting star just went over the 1,000 point career mark in the opening week. She was a First Team All-BCR and TRAC East All-Conference pick last year, averaging 13.6 points, 5.7 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 3.7 steals. • Tori Bogatitus, Hall (Sr., 5-4/G): The Third Team AllBCR player returns as point guard for the defending TRAC East champion. She dished out 4.5 assists a game, chipping 3.0 points and 2.5 steals. • Gabby Englehaupt, Hall (Sr., 5-6/F): Though a little undersized, the 5-6 senior plays big in the post for the Lady Devils. The Second Team All-BCR pick is the top area returner in rebounds (9.4) and averaged 8 ppg. • Hanah Hart, Hall (Jr., 5-9/F): A 20-point game at sectional gave a glimpse of things to come for the Lady Devils junior forward. The Second Team All-BCR and TRAC East pick averaged 12.8 points, 5.6 steals, 3.3 steals and 2.0 assists.
• Kelly VanDenBussche, PHS (Sr., 5-8/G): Out from beneath the shadow of former PHS standout Anna Murray, Kelly “VDB” is ready to shine for her senior season. She’s hit double figures in each of PHS’ first five games, averaging 14.0 ppg.
