SALUTE TO VETERANS 2019

Saluting veterans, Bureau County’s and beyond “S

alute to Veterans” is a labor of love for the staff of the Bureau County Republican and, in particular, Associate Editor Rita Roberts, who coordinates its production. The special section honors, in alphabetical order, more than 1,100 veterans who hail from Bureau County or who, through relatives or otherwise, have some sort of connection to the area. We remind people each year, starting about a month or so before Veterans Day, that we welcome submissions of veterans’ photos and information to be included in the section. By publishing photos of veterans living and dead, “Salute to Veterans” encourages the community to recall their service and sacrifices. Some of these servicemen and servicewomen paid the ultimate price in defense of America’s freedom and liberty. Many of these veterans returned from duty and resumed their civilian lives. But some might bear phys-

ical or emotional scars or disabilities from their experiences. Looking through the pages of “Salute to Veterans,” readers will find the names and faces of family members, friends, neighbors, acquaintances, people they knew of only by name, and many others

whom they never met. With gratitude, the Bureau County Republican produces this annual special section in conjunction with Veterans Day to remind readers of George area men and women Bryant who put their lives on 1932-2019 the line to defend our country and its people. An informal assistant in this longtime endeavor was George Bryant of DePue. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force from the 1950s, Mr. Bryant took it upon himself to encourage DePue area families to submit photos and information about their veterans. And a good many veterans, over the decades, have hailed from DePue. It was always a treat when Mr. Bryant arrived at the Bureau County Republican office bringing in his latest contribution of veterans’ photos and information. Sadly, George M. Bryant, 86, of

DePue died on Sept. 7. He served his community in a number of ways — as a plumber and handyman, as a volunteer firefighter (he was fire chief for 24 years), and as a lifetime member of the DePue Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4602. He also served as a loyal friend to veterans and an advocate for seeing that their services rendered to the nation are not forgotten. Mr. Bryant’s obituary pointed out, “For many years, he also was actively involved in contacting local veterans and their families for photos to include in the Bureau County Republican’s Salute to Veterans special section.” This year, we give a special salute to Mr. Bryant for all his help in keeping alive the memory of so many of his fellow veterans. And we salute all area military veterans for their service to their country. We are in their debt. Let their deeds and sacrifices never be forgotten.

Honoring the gallant Galetti brothers’ service

Seatonville family sent eight sons into military service

Lance Yednock sponsored the legislation, and both spoke at the July 25 dedication ceremony held in the Seatonville Fire Department.

EATONVILLE — For a brief time on July 25, the population of Seatonville was likely doubled. A large crowd had gathered inside the Seatonville Fire Department to honor the extensive military service of one of the village’s original families. The eight sons of the Galetti family all served in their country’s military. To honor that service, a memorial highway dedication ceremony was held to name a stretch of Route 6, from Hollowayville to the Route 89 junction in Spring Valley, in their honor. The honor was a result of the passage of House Resolution 61, which was sponsored by both state Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, and state Rep. Lance Yednock, D-Ottawa. The brothers, Michael, Joseph, John, Lawrence, George, James, Jess and Dennis, served between 1941 and 1969. The late John Galetti served in the Army from 1941 to 1944, and the late Michael and Joseph Galetti both served in the Army Air Force from 1942 to 1946. Lawrence Galetti served in the Navy from 1944 to 1946, George Galetti served in the Air Force from 1948 to 1952, James Galetti served in the Army from 1958 to 1960, Jess Galetti served in the Marine Corps from 1953 to 1955, and Dennis Galetti served in the Army from 1967 to 1969. “This is an unbelievable day for our family, and it’s such an honor for these guys. I can’t tell you how

much this means to them and the rest of our family,” Bob Galetti, son of Jim, said. Many other family members were also in attendance, and most were wearing commemorative T-shirts

that had been designed in the brothers’ honor. Both Rezin and Yednock spoke of the brothers’ dedication to their country and thanked them for their service.

Director of Veterans’ Affairs Linda Chapa LaVia spoke of the importance of honoring such military service and reminded those in attendance it is service such as that rendered by the Galetti brothers that makes the country possible. Members of the family then told some favorite stories, and also shared how the Galettis came to Seatonville in its earliest days. Following the presentation of the honorary signs to the family, a benediction was performed by Pavinato. Family, friends and many others then enjoyed a social hour with food and drinks while congratulating the five surviving Galetti brothers.

FLAGS OF FREEDOM A TRIBUTE TO HONOR THE PAST, PRESENT , AND FUTURE MEMBER OF OUR ARMED FORCES

Members of the Roger L. Eickmeier Post 125, AMVETS Post 180 and VFW Post 4323 fired a rifle salute during last year’s Veterans Day ceremony in Princeton.

Looking back at last year’s Veterans Day PRINCETON — Command Sgt. Tom Root of Princeton was the guest speaker at last year’s Veterans Day ceremony held at Veterans Park in Princeton. He retired in 2010 from the U.S. Army after a career of 33 years (three years active duty and 30 years with the Illinois Army National

Guard) and is also the former police chief for Princeton. Members of Roger L. Eickmeier Post 125, AMVETS Post 180, VFW Post 4323, American Legion Auxiliary Post 125 and Princeton-Illinois Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution also participated in the ceremony

The Flags of Freedom committee, a non-profit organization, has been reestablished in July of 2016 in order to support the four large flags in Princeton, Illinois in Bureau County. These 30 foot x 60 foot flags are hung from 153 foot poles at the intersection of Interstate 80 and Route 26. The committee is working to raise funds to ensure that these flags remain flying. The weather is very harsh on the flags. We do try to lower them or take them down completely when there is inclement weather to prevent them from getting torn. The flags are expensive costing $1400.00 each. Our current committee consists of approximately 15 members who are diligently trying to get donations to “keep the flags flying”. The original “Flags of Freedom” committee was started in 2004. They wanted to have a memorial in honor of all veterans and their families. It was decided that they would attempt to raise enough money to buy the flags and the poles. This committee raised over $320,000.00 by donations and fund raising events. The flags and poles were then purchased and were professionally installed. In 2007 the City of Princeton took over the responsibility of maintaining the flags and the poles. In July, 2016 the City of Princeton made the statement that they needed help funding the cost of the flags and infrastructure. Since no tax money is used to support this program, some funding comes from the tourism fund. A group met with the city council and discussed that a new committee was going to be formed to try to raise funds to help support the flags. The City of Princeton has agreed to maintain daily maintenance and minor infrastructure repairs. The City will purchase two flags annually. We are in the process of trying to get supporters to buy a flag on an annual basis. If someone cannot afford to do that, donations of any amount can be made to help purchase the flags and ‘KEEP THEM FLYING’. This is a great tribute to all of our veterans, past, present, and future. The Flags of Freedom Committee If you want to “KEEP THE FLAGS FLYING”, please fill out the attached pledge card and submit to: Flags of Freedom PO BOX 283 Princeton, IL 61356 For more information contact: Tom Root@ 815-719-0037
