BATAVIA – When Brigitte Shepard was pregnant with her daughter Isabella, she was frustrated that all the baby clothing she saw looked the same. The Yorkville resident hopes her store, Hummingbird in a Shoebox, offers plenty of unique items. The store sells designer children’s clothing, baby shower gifts and more. Hummingbird in a Shoebox celebrated its grand opening April 19 during the downtown Batavia Egg Hop after opening in February. The store is below Special Occasions dress shop at 241 W. Wilson St., on the corner of Wilson Street and Batavia Avenue in downtown Batavia. “We were looking for something not too big,” Shepard said. “We are hoping to grow.” Shepard believes the store is ideally located She said it will “get a lot of foot traffic from Special Occasions, and being on the corner helps.” “We have had people come in just because they see our stuff in the window,” she said. She said husband, Mike, came up with the name for the store because “he says I never sit still.” “I’m a very busy multitasker,” Shepard said. Shepard keeps busy. Along with being a mother to 3-yearold Isabella and running the store with her husband, in her full-time job, she is the market-

But the store offers a range of prices for everybody, Shepard said. “You can get a really cute outfit for $14,” she said. Shepard said she tries to meet the needs of her custom-

ers as best she can, adding, “if they have a special request, we will look into it.” Batavia Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Holly Deitchman said Hummingbird in a Shoebox is a great fit for the downtown. “I think there is a niche in Batavia for specialty clothing, especially children focused,” Deitchman said.

Hummingbird in a Shoebox shares the space with another business, Paper Dreams and Gifts, owned by Michelle Cienferri of Aurora. They previously subleased a space within Two Shopaholics in Wheaton. “We complement each other really well,” Shepard said. In the future, Shepard said Hummingbird in a Shoebox

plans to offer events families can enjoy together, such as hairbow making and mommy-daughter manicures. She said she also plans to convert a back room to create more space for merchandise as well as a fitting room. For information, call the store at 866-514-7010 or visit www.hummingbirdinashoebox.com.

New chamber executive director shares insights By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – As the new executive director of the Batavia Chamber of Commerce, Holly Deitchman said she wants to make the organization even more of a resource for local businesses. “We have lots to offer to the community, and we want to continue to offer so much more,” Deitchman said April 27 to members of the Batavia United Methodist Church.

Deitchman spoke as part of the church’s monthly program to have different community members or organi- Holly zations speak at Deitchman the church. The program began in January. “It’s connecting the church with the community,” said Deb Mengler, the church’s director of Christian education. “It’s educating the congrega-

tion about what is going on in the community.” Deitchman started as the Batavia Chamber’s executive director in February after the resignation of Roger Breisch, who led the chamber for almost 10 years. She had been the station manager of BATV since July 2008. A Batavia resident for 12 years, Deitchman has been involved in the community since moving here. “I definitely wanted to be a person that was part of the

community, not just a resident,” she said. As the Batavia Chamber’s new executive director, Deitchman said she hopes the chamber can provide even more networking opportunities for local businesses. “We have members from all over the western suburbs,” she said. ‘We try to bring businesses together.” One of her goals is to increase the chamber’s membership. The Batavia Chamber currently has 283 members.

“That means more people can come together to share ideas and better each other,” Deitchman said. The Batavia Women in Business group is an active part of the Batavia Chamber, and sponsors luncheons featuring different guest speakers. “We do lots of events to educate our members,” she said. BATAVIA – Downtown Batavia is seeing some changes with the sale of O’Brien’s Pub and Grill and attempts to fill the building which previously housed Fantastico restaurant. City Administrator Bill McGrath told aldermen O’Brien’s, 12 N. River St., is being sold, and the new operator, Fox River Bar & Grill LLC, would have to apply for a liquor license. The new owners currently own an establishment in Naperville, McGrath said.

O’Brien’s owner Casey O’Brien could not be reached for comment April 28. At the same time, the building at 227 W. Wilson St. in downtown Batavia which formerly housed Fantastico restaurant, still is being marketed. The restaurant closed several weeks ago. Fantastico reopened for business in November 2012 after being closed for more than a year. At that time, owner Sam Abdelnour said he closed the restaurant because he needed to take a break after 14 years in business. The restaurant previously had been on

Three Girl Scouts honored as top cookie sellers By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The bitter-cold winter created some harsh conditions for Girl Scout Katie Casey as she went door-to-door selling Girl Scout cookies. “It’s not fun when it’s 9 degrees out,” the Batavia resident said. But she persevered and ended up selling 1,500 boxes of cookies, making her one of the top 15 cookie sellers for 2014 for the Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois council. She is one of three Batavia youngsters to make the list. Grace Beem and Kelly Thoman also sold 1,500 boxes each. All three girls are part of

Girl Scout Troop 4825, which is based out of J.B. Nelson Elementary School in Batavia. Troop leader Melissa Casey, Katie’s mother, is proud of their accomplishments. “The girls do it themselves,” she said. “The girls are the ones doing the selling. They are pretty proud of themselves, and they should be, too.” The troop collectively sold 5,178 boxes of cookies. Along with making door-to-door sales, the troop manned a booth at several stores in the area. In order to draw more customers to the booth, the troop got creative and accented its booth with an Easy-Bake Oven, a homemade Girl Scout cookie recipe box and custom

Kelly Thoman said she spent the weekends selling so she could make her goal. “It was really cold,” she said. “We had to stand out in the cold for hours during booth sales,” she said. In the spirit of cooperation, Katie and Kelly stopped selling after they had reached their goals and helped Grace to reach hers. One woman donated $80 – or 20 boxes – to get Grace closer to her goal, but the woman didn’t take the boxes, suggesting instead they be donated to the Lazarus House homeless shelter in St. Charles or the St. Charles fire station, Casey said. The girls ended up donating 10 boxes to Lazarus House and 10 boxes to the St. Charles fire station. Grace said she sold “every

SUGAR GROVE – A new traffic signal at the north entrance of Waubonsee Community College became operational April 25. The signal was established on Route 47 at the school’s Sugar Grove campus. It is at a location near where two North Aurora teenagers – Ryan Sherrod, 18, and Brandon Utley, 19, were killed in a 2010 car crash. School officials issued a news release April 25 stating college leaders were pausing to remember the students. “While the completion of this project is a significant milestone, we continue to feel

TriCity Family Services held its 25th annual fundraising dinner April 26 to support its ongoing mission of providing affordable mental health services to Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles.

Nearly 500 attend TriCity Family Services dinner By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The Friends of TriCity Family Services hosted its 25th annual Silver Linings Benefit and Auction fundraiser April 26 with a packed crowd of nearly 500 supporters at the Lincoln Inn Banquets in Batavia. The annual event raises funds for the agency, which provides affordable counseling and other mental health services for children, teens and families and never denies services based on an inability to pay. TriCity Family Services is in its 47th year. “We are a family-centered mental health and wellness center,” said Jim DiCiaula of St. Charles, president of the TriCity Family Services board. “What’s important to me is the fact that we are reaching out, trying to reach our children and teens to identify mental health issues early in the journey so that we really can help them ... and their families really adapt and not have to struggle as much as they can if you identify it early.” DiCiaula said mental health is on a spectrum, and when people talk about mental health, they’re thinking about it on the far end when it really should be on the front end. “It’s common cold or the flu, and we want to help them

in the early stages to really make them viable human beings,” DiCiaula said. The fact so many people attended and the tickets sold out are important to note, DiCiaula said, reflecting several things that happened over the last year. “We’ve really built awareness in the community about mental health and wellness. I was the co-chair of the [St. Charles] District 303 Mental Health Program. We partnered this year to really bring the awareness in our community and getting out there and talking to people about mental health and wellness,” DiCiaula said. “I think this means there’s a lot more [people who] would be here if they actually knew. They’re responding to the call that we need to reach our kids, and you don’t have to walk alone.” The agency also presented three Golden Heart Awards to longtime philanthropic supporters Judy and Dudley Burgess, the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley and the Congregational Church of Batavia. The award is given to individuals or couples, a company or foundation and a community group or organization to recognize champions of compassionate, accessible mental health care in the Geneva, Batavia and St. Charles communities.

FEELING BETTER

MORE DIABETICS NEED VISUAL SCREENING Individuals with diabetes should know that they need to be regularly screened for complications that can lead to vision impairment or blindness. The American Diabetes Association and the American Academy of Ophthalmology both recommend an eye examination with pupil dilation at least once a year to identify diabetic macular edema (DME) and diabetic retinopathy, even if they have not experienced visual loss. However, a recent study indicates that only 44.7% of U.S. adults 40 years old or older with diabetic macular edema reported being told by a physician that diabetes had affected their eyes or that they had retinopathy. Both DME (retinal swelling) and diabetic retinopathy (retinal damage linked to diabetes) respond to treatment, especially if detected early. P.S. Newer treatment of DME involving injections of anti-vascular endothelial growth factors in combination

Raimondo’s offers fresh food, craft brews By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com

F

reshness is at the center of everything that Raimondo’s Pizza & Pub in North Aurora does. “My mother, Sally, still to this day – at 73 years old – comes in and makes our dough and our pizza sauce every day,” said Raimondo’s co-owner Michael Treve. “My family is so proud to be able to say that what we put on your plate when we come to our restaurant is the same food that you will find at our dinner table at home.” The restaurant, located at 1033 Kilbery Lane in North Aurora, has been gaining fans since first opening in June 2011. “We have a loyal customer base,” Michael Treve said. “Our customers visit us because of word-of-mouth.” Michael Treve owns the restaurant with his father, Raimondo, a retired North Aurora police officer. Michael Treve juggles his restaurant duties with being a part-time planner for DuPage County. His father and mother, Sally, previously ran a pizza parlor – also called Raimondo’s – in the A&W shopping center along Route 31 in North Aurora for 10 years until 2000. “We decided to keep the name, and that was for marketing reasons,” Michael Treve said. “People were familiar with the name of the restaurant, and we knew that would be a great way to reacquaint with our customers that remembered us.” Family recipes are also at the core of what Raimondo’s does. “We’re a family of foodies,” Michael Treve said. “When we were kids, on a Friday or Saturday night, Mom and Dad would pack us up in the car and we would just drive until we found a local family-owned business. We were looking for local flavor. You can go to chains anywhere. But we love the fact of trying new food and new places.” Raimondo’s sells a variety of signature pizza pies. One of the restaurant’s biggest sellers is The Godfather. “That takes our Italiano beef – and we buy the best beef money can buy – and we will season it with our own blend of Italian herbs,” Michael Treve said. “It’s

not just taking something off a truck that delivers it. We create our own recipes that suit our style and our quality. We sprinkle it with giardiniera for a spicy kick, and then mozzarella cheese on top of that.” Raimondo Treve is the man behind the restaurant’s pizzas. He is not afraid to experiment. “We do a lot of experimenting here,” he said. “We sample it out to people and see if they like it or not.” Raimondo’s features a variety of pizza pies, including the Garlic Chicken Alfredo pizza and the Bacon Double Cheeseburger pizza. In addition, the restaurant features a new pizza each month. In May, the Chicken Fajita will be featured. “We made it last year, and it sold very well,” Raimondo Treve said. “In June, we will probably feature our Pulled Pork Photos by Sandy Bressner - sbressner@shawmedia.com Barbecue pizza. It probably is one of our ABOVE: Raimondo and Michael Treve own Raimondo’s Pizza and Pub in North Aurora. BELOW: best sellers. He just loves cooking Italiano.” In addition to its food, Raimondo’s has more than 80 varieties of craft brews in stock and on tap. Beer enthusiast Michael Treve hosts public and private beer tastings/workshops at the restaurant. “We’ll explore a theme, like a country,” he said. “I put together a PowerPoint presentation, and we’ll sample out nine different beers while talking history and culture and geography. I also teach how I taste beer, and how I extract the nuances and characteristics of the beers. We try to educate our customers.” He hopes that every customer leaves his restaurant with a smile. “My family loves making people smile,” Michael Treve said. “When you walk through these doors, you’re not just a customer or a guest, you’re a friend.”

Alan Parsons Project to play hits at Arcada

Dinner to benefit academy

Schelkopf: Chicago has a special place in its heart for “Sirius,” the instrumental piece which precedes “Eye in the Sky,” [as it] has been used during player introductions at Chicago Bulls games. Do you think that is a good fit? Parsons: I think it is a great fit, but I certainly didn’t record it with any kind of sports theme in mind. And it’s not just used by the Bulls, it has been used by countless others, including football teams.

Bridges Montessori Academy in St. Charles and Heritage Prairie Farm in Elburn will team up to host a Farm Dinner on Saturday, May 10, at the farm, 2N308 Brundige Road, Elburn. Farm Dinners at Heritage Prairie have been a tradition since 2007, according to a news release; the chef delights in tailoring menus to highlight the best of the season’s fresh flavors. Cocktails with a cash bar begin at 5:30 p.m.; dinner, dessert, music and dancing will follow. The appetizers that will be passed at the event will include Shrimp and Chorizo Tacos, Baby Greens Quiche and Pulled Ham Flatbread. Dinner – an upscale fivecourse meal introduced by the chef himself – will be served family style, according to the Heritage Prairie Farm website. Entree items will include a Baby Greens Salad, Pan Seared Chicken, Quinoa Salad, Grilled Flank Steak and a Banc Finale, a variety of treats, such as spring cheese, fresh fruit, crackers, heritage salted brownies and sugar cookies. (The menu is subject to change.) Live music will be provided by Majors Junction, a group that melds country and honky-tonk blues with folk undertones, hints of bluegrass and rock ‘n’ roll. All are welcome to attend. Tickets cost $85 – including tax and gratuity – and must be purchased in advance through the farm at www.heritageprairiefarm. com or by calling 630-4435989. All proceeds will benefit Bridges Montessori Academy.

T

he Alan Parsons Project soared to the top of the charts with its song “Eye in the Sky.” Alan Parsons and The Alan Parsons Project will perform that song and other hits Saturday, May 10, at the Arcada Theatre, 105 E. Main St., St. Charles. There will be two shows – at 7 and 9:30 p.m. – and tickets are available at www. oshows.com. Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk with Parsons about his career. Eric Schelkopf: You’ve worked on so many albums and projects over the years. Do you have any favorite albums or projects that you’ve done? Alan Parsons: I think Al Stewart’s “Year of the Cat” sticks in my mind as being a piece of quality work. The title song was great, and there were some great performances. I feel good about that. And the first album by The Alan Parsons Project, “Tales of Mystery and Imagination,” was a pretty high point for me. Schelkopf: Was that just because it was your first album? Parsons: It was a new venture at the time. It’s like a first born child. I felt really positive at the time that we created something really worthwhile.

Schelkopf: Is there something about the song that is good for sports teams to use? Parsons: I suppose so. I think it is just the way it is laid out. I think it works great. But ask me if I got rich off it, and the answer would be “no.” Most of these things fall under the blanket arrangement between venues and BMI. Schelkopf: Of course, “Eye in the Sky” was a hit song. Did you think it would be a hit song when you wrote it? Parsons: That’s a funny story. It’s largely a Eric Woolfson song, and when he first played it, we sort of toiled over it, trying to find the right feel for it. And I was ready to give up on it. And then suddenly we found the right formula for it. Schelkopf: What wasn’t working? What changed? Parsons: We were trying different rhythmic feels, different tempos. We just couldn’t find one that I was happy with.

• COFFEE Continued from page 19 The St. Charles Public library currently does not have a coffee shop, but library director Pam Leffler said even while in the throes of a renovation, it would be difficult to justify carving out a space for a coffee shop when space is tight as it is. “My sense is that if we ever have a bigger space, that might be something

Alan Parsons and The Alan Parsons Project will perform their hits at 7 and 9:30 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at the Arcada Theatre in St. Charles. Schelkopf: But then it came together. Parsons: Yes. And Eric and the band never allowed me to forget that I was ready to drop it. Schelkopf: How did you put together your current band? Parsons: The latest incarnation kind of started around 2000, when I moved to Santa Barbara, Calif. We formed an American band, mostly from New York. But it’s evolved over the years. A lot of the guys are from the West Coast now. Schelkopf: I noticed that P.J. Olsson is in your band. Parsons: We actually wrote a song together called “Fragile” that we put out as a single. It just got released. We’ve been kind of promoting that on the road. Schelkopf: Is that a thrill for you, to collaborate with different people? Parsons: I’ve always felt better having songwriting partners. I find it difficult to write a song top to bottom without some kind of input from others.

that we would look into,” Leffler said. “The way that our space is currently configured, I don’t think that that’s something we can reasonably expect to put in the library, particularly when we’re kind of running out of space for some of our core services.” Before installing a coffee shop space, Leffler said libraries need to consider foot traffic, space requirements, staffing options, hours of operation and whether the library will profit from the coffee shop or lease a space to an outside ven-

Schelkopf: You’ve been in the music industry for a long time. What do think of the state of the music industry these days? Parsons: I think a lot of people, particularly in my age group, perhaps don’t spend a lot of time listening to music. My life seems to be dominated by other things, like television and email. The modern way of life is very different than how it used to be. People don’t go and buy their shiny new 12-inch vinyl album and turn the lights down and put it on and play it from start to finish. I miss that, and I think that probably a lot of other people do, too. There is some good music out there, but when I watched the Grammys the other day, I didn’t know who half the people were. There’s so many names I just don’t even know. And that’s because I’m not listening to music at home. And if I listen to music in my car, I’m probably going to listen to classical music or a classic rock station. That’s the way it is.

dor. To fulfill a food and beverage service, the St. Charles library currently utilizes vending machines, but in the future, Leffler said the library will keep the coffee shop concept on its radar. “I think that we always need to be listening to what our patrons may want and paying attention to what our neighboring libraries are doing and how successful or not those ventures may be, so that we can be responsive to that, as well,” Leffler said.

SPORTS&REC Never too young

Batavia 11-year-old completes marathon in Champaign

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com In some ways, Oliver Bohac-Datz is a kid through and through. His mom is the center of his universe, and Godzilla’s exploits can dominate his conversations. But April 26 reinforced that the 11-year-old from Batavia is no run-of-the-mill fifth-grader. Running alongside his mother, Oliver completed the Christie Clinic Illinois Marathon in Champaign-Urbana, a race that finished at the University of Illinois’ Memorial Stadium. “We had to tell each other to quit crying because we can’t run and cry at the same time, but we were both kind of overwhelmed with emotion [at the end],” said Amy Bohac-Datz, Oliver’s mother. “I was just so proud of him and I think he was so proud of himself. It was really emotional at that point.” Holding hands with his mother for the final quarter-mile, Oliver completed the marathon in 4:55.02. He became the first exception in the event’s six-year history to the policy of marathoners needing to be at least 17 years old, according to race director Jan Seeley. While Oliver dedicated each of the 26 miles to a someone influential in his life – ranging from family members to a teacher to noted U.S. ultra marathoner Scott Jurek – it’s clear who was Oliver’s primary inspiration and not just because his mom popped one of the painful blisters that developed on his feet during the race. “When you spend almost five hours with her, it’s hard not to like her,” Oliver said, showcasing a sense of humor that also ranges beyond his years. “She’s always just nice, trying to pull me through

The Bohac-Datz family pose with Oliver Bohac-Datz after the 11-year-old Batavia resident finished the Christie Clinic Illinois Marathon on April 26 in four hours, 56.02 minutes. harder runs like she did Saturday. It’s definitely something that brings us closer together, and when you cross that finish line after so long, it’s really some sort of amazing thing, almost a miracle, that you were able to do that.” Despite adhering to the grueling marathon training regimen, Amy Bohac-Datz said the April 26 run was even more demanding than her son anticipated. “Running those extra 5 miles [compared to a training run] really took a lot mentally out of him to push through the race,” she said. “I think he mentally had a struggle for about 5 miles between 16 and 21 where I don’t think he would have dropped out of the race, but he was kind of feeling, ‘Oh my gosh, this is a lot harder than I thought it was

going to be.’ I’m not sure what pushed him through the mental hurdles at mile 21 but he was really excited for the finish line. Something happened at mile 21 in his head where he was like, ‘I can do this.’’ Oliver’s interest in long-distance running blossomed after he ran the last 8 miles of a marathon in Lincolnshire in 2012 with his mom. He began training with her as part of multiple local running groups and ran four half-marathons – including one in Batavia – before finishing the April 26 marathon in Champaign. The Champaign race came about because Amy Bohac-Datz planned to run it last year but had her registration pushed back a year because of her pregnancy. She also thought the extra fanfare and hoopla of completing the race

at Memorial Stadium might provided extra fuel for Oliver. Oliver’s father – Eric Datz – is outdoorsy but does not like to run. “He tells us ‘If I was on fire, I’d walk to the hose,’ “ Amy Bohac-Datz said. So dad spent April 26 performing his own task with a high degree of difficulty – corralling 2-year-old Charlie and 6-month-old Wally while locating Oliver and Amy at five different points along the course to shout encouragement. Both of Oliver’s parents come from scientific backgrounds and refute the notion that it is unsafe for children to attempt marathons until they are fully grown. Many races, including the St. Charlesbased Fox Valley Marathon, have policies against runners younger than 18 competing for liability reasons.

Oliver required physical therapy last year after experiencing Achilles tendinitis but said he’s in far better shape than he was then. That conditioning will be tested again next month. Oliver and his mom are planning to participate in the Tryon Farm Trail 50k run – just more than 31 miles – in Michigan City, Ind. “For the marathon, he was trying not to stop and walk at all,” Amy Bohac-Datz said. “For this ultra race, with the uphill, we’re going to walk. … So I think it’ll be a lot less stressful on his legs. I know we’re going a farther distance but I think it’ll be a lit more leisurely.” As is often the case for marathoners, much of Oliver’s affirmation has been internal, but the April 26 marathon included adulation on both the front and back ends. His parents presented him with dozens of letters of encouragement the night before the race, and April 28 at Alice Gustafson Elementary School in Batavia, Oliver said there was “an uproar” when his achievement was saluted during morning announcements. While his mother said Oliver has been “more of an academic kid” than an athlete during his youth, he is interested in trying tennis, wrestling, and, yes, cross country, in the coming years. “What they call long distance running is definitely not what I do,” Oliver said, musing about the prospect of running cross country when he hits Rotolo Middle School. “They run 3 miles at most. I usually run about 5 to 10 a day, so that’s more just an extra thing to meet up with a group and be able to run with them.” Being just one of the boys, after all, remains in Oliver’s repertoire.
