Thus,Idecidedtodomy firsteverspeechfor4-Hcommunicationsonreusing,reducing andrecyclingtoserveasan 8-yearoldconservationadvocate.Iwasevenselected asdelegateandpromotedmy causeatthestatelevel.While Ididnotplace,thejudgestold metheywouldstartrecycling,
makingmyoveralloutcomea success.Iwantedmynatural projecttoreflectmyconservationtheme.Iwashelping mymomwaterthegarden whenshetoldmyaboutanold cisterntheyused.Itcollected
rainwaterandtheyutilized thewaterforplants.WhenI lookedupcisternsontheinternet,Ibecameawareofthe modernrainwaterharvesting systemsthatareavailable today.Simplyput,wateris
gatheredthroughacollection systemfromguttersonthe roofandgoesthrougha filtrationsystembeforeending upinaholdingtank.These systemsarerelativelycheap andprovidefreewaterthat isbetterforwateringplants thanthetreatedwaterfrom thewatercompany.Thus,I decidedtobuildaminirainwaterharvestingsystemwith apostershowinghowitworks andthebasicbenefits.My goal wasdemonstratingrainwater harvestingisaneasyand thriftywaytoconservewater.
IwassoproudwhenIreceived grandchampionattheAdams CountyFairandoverthe moon toearnchampionatthe Illinois StateFair.Nextyear,Iplanon takingnaturalresourcesagain tofocusonwaterpollution and suggestpossiblesolutions.I wanttomakeadifferenceand showthatwecanalltake small stepstolessenourenvironmentalfootprint.
