The address is home to local couple Jim and Dawn Slanker, who have built a bevy of Halloween haunts in the yard of their Carol Stream house. The display includes 30 animatronic props and 50 pumpkins. Among its highlights are a spider infestation scene with insects that drop from the trees and come out of wood crates to spit at visitors, a witch that rises into the air and corpses crawling from their graves. But it all started with a single ghost. “We didn’t set out to have something quite this big,” said Dawn. The pair always had some yard décor for Halloween, but in 2006, Jim was looking online for ideas and came across a concept for a floating animatronic ghost in a crypt. The rest is history. “Everyone loves it,” Dawn said, adding that their neighbors are supportive of the annual show. “They can’t wait to see what we’re going to do next.” The setup gets bigger every year – new in 2014 are two pumpkin creatures that stand 10 and 12 feet tall, respective-

However, Jim specified that for he and his wife, Halloween is about providing a healthy spook – not terrifying visitors with over-the-top gore. “It’s just a fun time,” he said. All told, the display requires about 150 hours to assemble. Jim, an IT project coordinator for UPS, typically takes the last week of Sep-

tember off work to prepare the decorations. He and Dawn’s anniversary is Sept. 27, and they usually spend it together, getting the yard ready for Halloween. Jim handles the mechanics while Dawn does the artistic finishes. “It’s fun to bounce ideas off each other,” she said. The duo also get inspiration from their creepy cohorts at Chicago Haunt Builders, a local Halloween enthusiast group, of which they are both members. Once the display is up, the

props operate from dusk to 9 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and dusk to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday through Halloween night. This year, Jim and Dawn expect 1,200 trick-or-treaters – they give out full-size candy bars – and about 3,000 visitors total on Halloween. During past seasons, spook seekers sometimes felt compelled to compensate the couple, so they encourage anyone who would like to do so to donate nonperishable foods for the Northern Illinois Food Bank via a drop box coffin in the yard or to leave cash or checks for the Dalmatian Rescue of Illinois. For them, Halloween is about creating an opportunity to meet the community and give local kids a little fun. “We’re adding to the memories, their fond childhood memories,” Dawn said.

On their vision for DuPage County during the next 10 years Cronin: I really think we are in the remarkably fortuitous position to demonstrate how government should be done ... I think the vision, for me, is to meet the challenges of a changing community. It’s becoming more and more diverse and I embrace that diversity. We have to meet those challenges, and we have to do it in a way that is affordable, that is sustainable with the current revenue structures, and we have to be nimble to be able to move and adapt when and if there are challenges that require us to change what we’ve been doing. Peickert: The first thing we have to do is address and correct some of the major problems that exist out here, like the O’Hare noise issue. That has to be addressed and corrected. The flooding has to be addressed and corrected before we move to the next level. ... Renewable energy – I think that tech park idea of looking into solar energy

in DuPage is something we should at least talk about.

DuPage Country Board D-4 Grant Eckhoff, R-Wheaton (incumbent), vs. Jeremy Custer, D-Glendale Heights On what they specifically would bring to the county board Eckhoff: One thing I try to do, and that I tried to do when I got elected to the Wheaton City Council ... is make the people I work with a team. On the city council in Wheaton there was a lot of divisiveness right at the beginning, but over time ... we got to be pretty good friends. ... With District 4, when I first got elected, I had heard the [district members] sat in separate corners of the room. I made it a point to bring all of us together. Custer: The one thing I’d like to do is create a constituent service office funded by the pay raise the county board recently gave themselves, as well as another significant portion from my pay as a county board member. The purpose of that would be to hold town hall meetings there, so you have a place to go ... Working with your colleagues is good, but working with the people that sent you to office is even better. On the differences between them Custer: I think what differentiates us is I would be a little more energetic and a little more open to creating community outreach. I think longtime incumbents do get a little stale in

their office. I think it’s always good for democracy to have a good old-fashioned election and make sure we know what the person who’s been in there for a very long time stands for. Eckhoff: What am I going to say? It’s experience. I’ve been doing this for a long time – that’s not a bad thing. Because, when you’ve gone around the block a few times in government, you learn how it works and how to make it work. As I’ve said before, I try to attack issues that other people have talked about and done nothing about. So I do agree that people who are in government a long time tend to have a kneejerk reaction of, ‘Just let it go, it’s already been that way, and it’s going to be that way’ ... and I’ve tried to work to make sure that I don’t fall into that trap.

SINGLE CANDIDATE HIGHLIGHTS DuPage County Board D-6 Laurie Nowak, D-Bartlett, (incumbent, challenger Kevin Wiley, R -West Chicago, was unable to attend because of a scheduling conflict) Why residents should vote for Nowak Fixing the problems in Springfield and D.C. may be a long-term project, but we can continue to make noticeable differences in improving the efficiency and transparency of local government here today. We cringe at the cronyism and complacency in state and federal government, and we certainly shouldn’t have to deal with it in our own backyard. ... I’m passionate about making our county the best it can be. As a young adult, I have a vested interest in the future of our county, and I understand the unique challenges facing retired baby boomers trying to stay in their homes on a fixed income and people like myself who had to enter the job market during a recession. DuPage County should be a place where both residents of my age and my parents’ age can afford to live and thrive.

Looking back, surging forward at WDSRA This past year has been a time of both reflection and vision here at Western DuPage Special Recreation Association, all with one single goal in mind … to serve the families of DuPage County. As we strive to be true to our mission, the development of individuals through recreation, we reflect on what our mission meant when our doors first opened 38 years ago. It COMMUNITY meant giving people with VOICE special needs the means to Sandy enjoy typical life experiences Gbur and the personal growth that those experiences bring. Today, we know our mission is more important than ever. We hear it from our families and those who are touched by our services. Giving all individuals the chance for meaningful engagement creates physical, social and emotional well-being. It changes lives and communities. With special recreation, children blossom in the same types of activities that their typically developing peers enjoy. This allows them to share in those common experiences. Teens hunger for social connections and independence. With WDSRA programs, they can feel connected to their community and each other. Families can feel secure in giving them the independence they seek. And adults can lead fulfilling lives for years to come. During the past year we continue to be driven by our mission. We have initiated new programs geared to those more difficult to reach and partnered with families to create healthier lifestyles. Through the creation of an outreach manager position, filled by Dayell Houzenga, we have connected with more than 175 new families. We invite those not served by WDSRA to give her a call and come in for a chat. A look at the entire year in review and more highlights can be found in our FY13-14 Annual Report at www.wdsra.com. As we look forward, our mission is still what continues to steer us down future paths. We are excitedly pursuing several endeavors through new programs and partnerships. Plans also are underway for conducting a needs assessment to gather input from those we serve and those eligible for services who are not yet part of our family. Indeed it promises to be an exciting year for WDSRA, our participants and families. Our goal continues to be creating opportunities for success for every child and adult while making each experience exciting and enjoyable. I invite you to watch a short, exciting new video about WDSRA. Learn why parents are calling WDSRA “exceptional and rare.” If you have questions about programs or services, visit www.wdsra.com or call us at 630-681-0962.

Shoppers enter Stratford Square Mall on Oct. 22 after the recent opening of the Round One entertainment complex. A large-scale redevelopment is planned for the shopping center.

Changes are on the horizon for Stratford Square Mall, with plans for a major redevelopment that would include updated entrances, two new junior anchor tenants, added restaurant and entertainment options and national retailers in the works. All of this follows the opening of Round One entertainment complex, which came to Stratford Square earlier in October. The mall’s developers have yet to request any incentives from the village of Bloomingdale, so at this point, the improvements are a win-win. Thumbs up to all the candidates who responded to Suburban Life’s questionnaires for Tuesday’s election. Yes, I’m calling with respect to the “Stand up to the teachers union” comment in the Sound Off column. Basically, when they’re talking about a progressive instead of a regressive tax structure, that’s a very strong point, and it’s something that needs to be done in the state of Illinois in my opinions because we’re trying to work for the good of the state. I think it is a function of the state to try to distribute the money evenly through the state. That homeowners’ tax is in a way regressive on some people, but on others it’s not. You have a lot of people that own land which has a lot of value, but the housing on it does not and they are trapped.

Is vision loss inevitable with age? The answer may surprise you

SARATOGA GROVE PROVIDENCE of Downers Grove 3460 Saratoga Ave | Downers Grove IL 60515

(BPT) - Eighty-three percent of U.S. adults believe their eyesight will worsen as they age, no matter what preventive steps they take, according to a recent DSM Nutritional Products survey. While genetics and lifestyle factors do play a role for some serious eye conditions that cause vision loss such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), years of proper nutrition may protect vision in the long term. More than 2 million Americans age 50 and older suffer from AMD, and it is especially prevalent among Caucasian women. “You don’t want to reach your 40s and realize that you’re beginning to have vision problems,” says Dr. Kimberly Reed, optometrist and Ocular Nutrition Society board member. “Following a few simple recommendations can help support your vision - and your family’s vision - now and in the future.” Reed offers these tips for maintaining eye health and supporting vision in the long term: 1. See your diet in color Many brightly colored fruits and vegetables contain lutein and zeaxanthin, two powerful antioxidants that research shows are beneficial in maintaining macular health. Intake of 12 mg per day of lutein and zeaxanthin offers the best protection, but only 10 percent of Americans are getting enough of these essential nutrients, according to the American Optometric Association. For weekly meal planning this year, choose colorful fruits and vegetables that provide these important antioxidants, like spinach, kale, and other dark leafy greens, as well as corn, peas, broccoli, and orange and red peppers. 2. Omega-3 fatty acids for eye health A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that people with higher intakes of omega-3 fatty acids may experience a lower incidence of dry eye syndrome (DES). For patients who suffer regularly from dry eyes, omega-3 intake can significantly improve symptoms and increase quality tear production. Adults should get at least 1,500 mg per day of DHA and EPA either by consuming fatty fish, such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines, or taking high-quality fish oil and algae supplements. Be sure to check with your physician if you are taking medications that affect blood clotting before increasing your intake of omega-3s to this level. For women who are pregnant or nursing, DHA is an essential nutrient to support infant visual development. 3. Remember your vitamins and minerals An array of vitamins and minerals also play an important role in maintaining eye health. For instance, A and B vitamins perform many complex and critical functions throughout the body, including the eyes. And, according to a study published in Ophthalmology, vitamins C and E, which function as antioxidants, are also essential to eye health and have been shown to impact the progression of certain forms of AMD. Finally, zinc helps deliver vitamin A from the liver to the retina in order to produce melanin, a protective pigment in the eyes. Get your fill of at least five servings of colorful fruits and vegetables, as well as nuts and legumes, per day to obtain these essential vitamins and minerals. Even when striving to follow an optimal diet, it’s difficult to get the recommended amounts of essential vitamins and nutrients from food alone, so nutritional supplements can play an important role in maintaining eye health. Several products specifically formulated to support eye health and vision are available, so ask your eye health professional at your next appointment. For more nutrition information, visit www.vitaminsinmotion.com.

Peripheral neuropathy is a condition that affects people in every walk of life. It is estimated that 20 million Americans and 60% of diabetics suffer from this disorder. There are many kinds of neuropathy, the symptoms of which include burning, tingling, weakness, numbness, paralysis, and dull to excruciating pain - especially in the hands and feet. Although many neuropathies have no known causes, neuropathy is often associated with other conditions. Examples are: Diabetes, shingles, toxins, autoimmune disorders, bulging discs that compress on nerves, spinal stenosis, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and poor nutrition. Statin drugs and chemotherapy can also cause neuropathy.

Of the many causes of peripheral neuropathies”, says Dr. Kelenyi, “ a major one comes from a metabolic condition. You cannot drug your way out of a metabolic condition. It requires a change in lifestyle.” Dr. Kelenyi says, “Diet is crucial when addressing peripheral neuropathy, especially in diabetics and autoimmune disorders. Harmful foods to be avoided include alcohol, sugar, processed foods, fast foods, junk foods, sodas of all types, foods sprayed with pesticides, and trans-fatty acids. Sweeteners and additives contained in diet soda and processed foods such as MSG and aspartame can negatively impact the nervous system.” As a Board Eligible Chiropractic Neurologist, Dr. Kelenyi performs specific metabolic and neurologic tests to help determine what is causing the problem. There are a few primary types of neuropathies: Large or small diameter or both as well as motor. If jerking is involved then it can be as much a problem in the brain due to trans-neural degeneration as it is in the peripheral nerve. A thorough and comprehensive exam ensures an accurate diagnosis.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 6TH AT 11:00AM

Ask yourself… • Has your condition affected every part of your life? • Have you tried “everything” (Anodyne therapy, physical therapy, Lyrica®, Neurotin®, or other medications) without getting the results you want? • Do you suffer with other secondary symptoms such as falling, dexterity, muscle atrophy, etc.? • Would you rather ix the underlying problem rather than cover it up with drugs?

CSP

For the last three years Dr. Susan Kelenyi, DC of Glen Ellyn, IL has worked extensively with peripheral neuropathy patients. Dr. Kelenyi describes peripheral neuropathy as damage to the nerves, which transmits information from the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body. “This can result in pain, loss of feeling, and inability to control muscles, such as difficulty with walking. As with any other condition, there is no “one size fits all” remedy for those suffering from neuropathies and treatment may vary depending on the cause and severity.” However, many individuals can and do find relief using natural remedies. And this is where Dr. Kelenyi steps in.

FREE

Neuropathy can affect every part of your life - walking, sitting, sleeping, socializing, your ability to enjoy your relationships and so much more. If you have tired “everything” (Anodyne therapy, physical therapy, Lyrica, Neurotin or other meds) without getting the results you want then this may be the most important information that you ever read. There is a simple reason that most treatments fail, because at best they only cover up your symptoms and do not help your damaged nerves.

If you suffer from a single one of these torturous symptoms- numbness, tingling, burning or sharp nerve pain, then read on. A new breakthrough treatment could change your life.

New Solutions to your Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy

Topics to be discussed • What is and what are the main causes for Peripheral Neuropathy • Diabetes & Peripheral Neuropathy • If you are taking “statin” drugs - what your doctor doesn’t tell you could hurt you • If your nerves are damaged what does that mean for the rest of your body • Why your lab results do not tell the whole story • How you can live pain free with a clinically proven program

Additional therapies may include: oxygen, vibration, spinal decompression, cold laser therapy along with brain balance therapies to create a layered approach to “wake up” the nerves so they can function again and re-educate nerve pathways that have gone “hay-wire”. Dr. Kelenyi says, “Our solutions are non-drug, non-surgical approaches, that are researched based and based on prior clinical success. The reason we achieve excellent outcomes is because we take both a metabolic and neurological approach in our program.” She says it’s a very rewarding way of practicing. “We get chronically ill people coming from all over the Chicagoland area, even out of state, to our clinic. The most important thing for these patients is results. We get results.”

Dr. Kelenyi states that her peripheral neuropathy recovery program is a combination of different cutting edge techniques and protocols. “We use revolutionary breakthrough protocols in the treatment of Peripheral Neuropathy… one of the therapies offered is Horizontal Therapy which is the latest, breakthrough in the science of electro-medicine and the most advanced and effective form of bioelectric treatment available to date. I’m very proud to be the first in the area to offer this to my patients ...pain management without drugs or surgery to get lasting results.”

John & Tony’s Ristorante an inviting steakhouse WEST CHICAGO – Discovering an abundance of delicious options on a menu is particularly pleasing, given my dining companion’s finicky nature when it comes to food choices. John & Tony’s Ristorante in West Chicago ably meets the challenge with offerings of steak and seafood to pasta, pizza and burgers. A fire glowing softly in the attractive dining room’s stone fireplace, and music by Dean Martin, Michael Bublé and other crooners created a relaxing atmosphere as we perused the menu. The appetizer list quickly caught our attention. The bacon-wrapped dates sounded tempting, but so did the crispy calamari. Of course, we also considered the flaming saganaki and the antipasto platter. We zeroed in on our dinner selections, deciding to forgo the openers and save our appetites for our entrees. My companion ordered the 18-ounce, ribeye steak, cooked medium well, with a side of garlic butter sauce for dipping, and garlic roasted red potatoes. The garlic trifecta was completed with his choice of dressing for the house salad. The steak was cooked perfectly and was extremely tender. The garlic butter sauce offered as a side condiment gave the steak an extra boost, but the cut of meat could certainly stand on its own without any embellishment. I selected the Parmesan-crusted, bone-in pork chop with garlic roasted red potatoes and a simple house salad with balsamic vinaigrette. The chop was about half an inch thick, and lavishly crusted with Parmesan cheese, offering great flavor and a moist cut. The garlic roasted red potatoes were a tasty side dish to both the steak and pork chop. A garnish of thinly sliced spirals of carrots and beets provided an aesthetic touch with a nice crunch. If you prefer Italian-Amer-

Narrow defeats cost Panthers playoff berth By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com CAROL STREAM – The Glenbard North football team ended the 2014 season on a high note last Friday with a 45-14 win against Naperville North. But for a program that had become one of the top in the state with 11 straight playoff appearances and two runner-up finishes, seeing that streak come to an end can be summed up in one word. “Disappointing,” Glenbard North coach Ryan Wilkens said. What hurt the most was the way it went down. Three of the Panthers’ five losses this season came by five or less points, including a 33-28 setback to undefeated Centerville of Ohio in the season opener and back-toback defeats to Lake Park and Wheaton Warrenville South in Weeks 7 and 8. A fourth to

Naperville Central involved three interception returns for touchdowns. And with 45 playoff points, the team would still be playing had it reached the five-win mark. “We had opportunities to win one more game,” Wilkens said. “That’s all we had to do to get in. We just didn’t get it done.” Glenbard North did get it done against Naperville North for a second time this season as the home team rushed for six touchdowns. Freshman Jalen Fitzpatrick scored three of those, quarterback Brett Gasiorowski broke two long TD runs and fullback Dillon Warnecke also found the end zone. Seeing Warnecke rumble 54-yards for a score was especially gratifying after the fullback has spent much of the past two years blocking for others, including now North-

western freshman standout Justin Jackson. “He is the best fullback we’ve ever had,” the coach said. “He just does his work even though he doesn’t get the ball a lot. We gave him a couple of touches and he took advantage.” Next up is an important offseason as the Panthers gear up for an expanded DuPage Valley conference that will welcome Waubonsie Valley, Metea Valley and Neuqua Valley. “With Shane (Conway), Vittorio (Tricase), Devion (Hodges) and Jace James coming back, skill position wise we will be OK,” Wilkens said. “We’ve just got to get our O-line on the same and get those kids upfront going in the right direction. Defensively, we have to replace our linebackers and all of that experience and a lot of our defensive line. We have to figure that Wheaton Warrenville South’s Jake Kyllonen tackles Glenbard North’s out.” Isaiah Hawkins Oct. 17 at Wheaton Warrenville South.

Wheaton Academy comes up short in playoff bid SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA Less than 24 hours after ending the regular season with a 49-28 loss to Aurora Central Catholic, the Wheaton Academy football team received heartbreaking news. The Warriors, who finished with a 5-4 record and 39 playoff points, were the last team to be left out of the 256-team IHSA state playoffs. In fact, it came down to Wheaton Academy and Aurora Christian, and the Eagles advanced via a tiebreaker. “It’s pretty devastating,” Warriors coach Brad Thornton said. “You’ve got a whole range of emotions going through you. You’re frustrated and you feel awful for your players, especially your seniors, who their goal all along had been to make the playoffs. I really felt the work they put in this season was enough, and I really thought they deserved the chance to play in the playoffs.” Seeking its first postseason berth since 2009, Wheaton Academy rolled to a 4-0 start that included three shutouts, but didn’t become playoff-eligible until a 24-14 win against Fenton in Week 8. “To be the first team out

Suburban Life ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Wheaton Warrenville South Junior | Football Why Johnson was selected: Johnson rushed for 124 yards and a touchdown in Friday’s 27-20 win against Naperville Central.

Darling received his second career NHL start Tuesday against the Anaheim Ducks but was on the wrong side of a 1-0 loss. He made 24 saves in the defeat. Having grown up a Blackhawks fan, taking the ice at the United Center was a dream come true. And doing it in front of 20 or 30 friends and family was the icing on the cake. “To be on the ice for the National Anthem and to hear the crowd from that point of view,” the goalie said, “it is really something that I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to put into words. “It was a very good experience and I’m certainly happy with how things went. And over the next few days I found out that some kids I knew from high school were there and also guys that I played youth hockey with. It turned out to be a great way to catch up with old friends.”

Schmid: What was the key to being able to run the football against a tough NC defense? Johnson: The offensive line made holes and I was making my cuts.

By the time I got to the rink, I tried to treat it like another hockey game. “And the guys were awesome, they were trying to calm me down and keep me loose. When I got out there, it was an amazing experience. When the final buzzer went, it was a huge feeling of relief and excitement. I was really happy to get my first game and win and that is something nobody can take away from me.” After the game, the 25-yearold was named the No. 1 Star of the Game. “They said out loud that I was a local guy and the whole place erupted,” said Darling. “They were so supportive and loud, it was really, really cool.”

Blackhawks forward Patrick Sharp congratulates goalie Scott Darling after the Lemont native earns his first career NHL victory.

After not carrying the ball during the first two weeks of the season, Jonathan Johnson has become an important part of the Wheaton Warrenville South offense. On Friday, the junior running back came up big in the Tigers’ most important game of the season, gaining 124 yards and one touchdown on 24 carries as Wheaton Warrenville South clinched a share of the DuPage Valley Conference title and a playoff berth. Johnson, the Wheaton Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, spoke with Wheaton Suburban Life sports reporter Scott Schmid about his performance and his team’s postseason clinching victory.

JONATHAN JOHNSON

By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com Scott Darling calls himself an under-the-radar type of guy. But the Lemont native is trying to embrace the newfound attention he has received after being called up by the Chicago Blackhawks and recording a win in goal in his first NHL start on Oct. 26. “It’s been crazy,” Darling said, “just the response that people have given me whether on Facebook or twitter. It’s definitely cool. I’m proud to wear this jersey and represent Chicago and hockey players. It’s pretty exciting.” Starting off the season with the Rockford IceHogs of the AHL, Darling received his opportunity when Blackhawks starting goalie Corey Crawford went down with an upper-body injury. “We were in Toronto at the time,” Darling said. “When I got off the ice after practice, the coaches pulled me aside and told me the situation, that I was going to Chicago. I hopped in a cab from the rink and went to the airport and was on a plane an hour after I got off the ice. “I didn’t know if it was going to be just for a night, I wasn’t really sure. But I was super excited for my first callup. I called my girlfriend and my parents and those were the only calls I was able to make before I got on a plane.” Darling was the back-up to Antti Raanta for three games before getting the start against the Ottawa Senators, making 32 saves and leading the Blackhawks to the 2-1 win, his first victory in an NHL sweater. “I was pretty nervous

Can the Bears’ season be saved?

Bears general manager Phil Emery and coach Marc Trestman met the media to answer questions on the day after the Bears’ 51-23 loss to the New England Patriots and expressed a firm belief the season could be saved. Trestman explained things will get better after the bye, “Because it shows up that we can get it done. These are things that are correctable. “Our ability to create some turnovers will help us. Our ability to match up better will help us. I’ve seen this happen over time after a bye week, where teams find themselves. “And I feel confident that we’re going to find our way through this and get back in a position where we are playing more consistently, to where we are playing the kind of game we played against Atlanta, that we played against San Francisco.” It is, however, exactly that kind of answer that creates more questions than confidence. The Falcons are one of the worst teams in the league, and the Bears were awful against the 49ers for three quarters and aren’t in that game if San Francisco doesn’t commit 16 penalties and four

CHICAGO FOOTBALL.COM Hub Arkush bad turnovers. Emery analyzed Jared Allen’s play to date. “When I watch him on tape, I don’t see that he lacks quickness or speed. He’s made several rundown plays from the backside. Jared got the quarterback [Brady] on the ground three times after his release. Obviously those aren’t sacks. In terms of the common relationship with his age, I don’t see that he lost speed and quickness.” I don’t know what Jared Allen has left and I’m not disputing what Emery is seeing on tape. But what good are pressures or hits when Brady was 30 of 35 and four of his five incompletions were drops. So he was this close to perfect with 354 yards, five touchdowns and no sacks. Where is the upside so far from the addition of Allen? Emery said this about why Jay Cutler still struggles with certain fundamentals. “In the past, he was better

“In the past, he was better than everybody around him, and when you’re better than everybody around you, you’re pressed to make plays. ... than everybody around him, and when you’re better than everybody around you, you’re pressed to make plays. Coming out of Vanderbilt, some of his things from a technical standpoint were concerning, in terms of coming off the back foot, protecting the football. Jay, like a lot of players in that position, has a little bit of a gun-slinger personality in terms of, ‘I want to be the guy making the plays.’ He trusts his arm. Those are habits. Habits are hard to improve.” Really? Then why did he just guarantee Cutler $54 million over this and the next two seasons? Trestman said of Cutler “his leadership’s been at a premium.” Since leadership has been

IT’S ALL ABOUT DRIVE

such a hot topic lately, I asked Trestman if he could explain what he meant by that and he responded, “Every day it starts with him and how he comes into this building. “His work ethic is exemplary. How he practices is exemplary. We have tremendous practices here. We have very good competition here. That starts not only with Jay but with a lot of guys in our locker room that have played a lot of football. “It starts with Jay in that manner because he does set the tone as most quarterbacks do in terms of how a team works and his work ethic is second to none in the building.” Those practices and compe-

tition have yielded a 3-5 football team. I didn’t ask about his work ethic. Does that explain leadership to you? Let me be clear. Cutler is not what’s wrong with the Bears, he is just a piece of a much bigger puzzle. Emery and Trestman are guys it would be easy to pull for and many of you would really like to see them succeed. But after listening to them Monday, I’m afraid I came away with a lot more questions than I did answers, or hope.
