Previously home to Shanahan’s Pub, Jim doubled the size of the Gametime venue by scaling back the Red Rooster. He then gutted the space, replacing the bar, televisions and furniture. Overseeing a local watering hole is nothing new to Jim – he also operates Winner’s Pub in South Elgin.

The bar will play all Sunday football games, as well as Blackhawks games and other sporting events. Drinks include traditional sports bar offerings, such as beers and cocktails. Gametime doesn’t serve food, but has a working relationship with Papa Saverio’s Pizzeria, allowing customers to order from the restaurant and eat at the pub.

LETTERS into my work with other board members. We worked together with admirable professionalism. We had some tough moments, but we also made great strides within a short time. I am grateful to every member of the board – and to the people in District 6 – for my experiences as commissioner. And while my preference would have been to continue serving as District 6 commissioner, I did not win the election, and so I will step down Dec. 1. A heartfelt “thank you” to the people in District 6 who recognized my commitment to our forest preserves by voting for me. My love of the district and my interest in natural resource management is not limited to an elected position. The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County has something for everyone and I plan to stay involved. Maybe I’ll see you there!

Park District earns financial reporting honor

To the Editor: In the two years I served as District 6 Forest Preserve commissioner, I accomplished a great deal. On my goal of improving transparency, I instituted regular evening meetings, established a functioning ethics committee and voted for video of board meetings to be posted online. Through the publication of an annual report of my work, I let my district know that I lobbied for the district’s first expense-based budget, thus saving several million dollars. And I voted to reduce board member salaries. In addition, I initiated meetings with DuPage United to address their concerns. I continued my education in natural resource management through handson volunteer work and formal classroom courses. I toured the county on bicycle to assess trail connections. I met with individuals and with groups, participated in river cleanup and restoration

Carol Stream man pleads guilty to attempted murder By MARY BETH VERSACI mversaci@shawmedia.com

A Carol Stream man pleaded guilty Nov. 13 to attempted first-degree murder after he shot his wife in July 2011 in Oakbrook Terrace after she left work in Elmhurst, said Paul Darrah, spokesman for Ronald D. t h e D u P a g e Smith County State’s Attorney’s Office. Aiesha Thomas left Lexington Health Care for the day when Ronald D. Smith forced her car off the road with his vehicle on Butterfield Road near Route 83 and opened fire, striking his wife in the wrist. Thomas exited the vehicle and a passing motorist picked her up. Smith then followed that vehicle. After a brief chase, he forced it off the road and opened fire once again. The good Samaritan drove Thomas to the Oakbrook Ter-

Smith later turned himself into police. In addition to attempted first-degree murder, Smith also pleaded guilty to aggravated discharge of a firearm, Darrah said. Since being charged, he has remained in the DuPage County Jail on $500,000 bond, Darrah said. Smith will be sentenced Dec. 2 and he is expected to receive a 31-year sentence, based on an agreement among the prosecutors, defense attorneys and presiding judge, Darrah said. Smith’s trial was scheduled to begin this week before he pleaded guilty to the charges against him, he said.

Steele is first man found guilty in violating RICO law in county for drug ring involvement SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA

adno=0272292 adno=S0250419

A high-ranking member of a drug-trafficking ring in DuPage and Cook counties has been found guilty through the first use of the state’s Street Gang and Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations law Terrence in DuPage Coun- Steele ty, according to a news release from the county state’s attorney’s office. Chicago resident Terrence Steele, 36, was found guilty by jury of heroin possession and sales charges late Nov. 14. Steele is the ring’s highest-ranking member to be convicted in relation to an August 2013 drug bust where 31 people were arrested. The RICO law allows for the prosecution of stiffer pen-

alties if it can be proven a defendant’s activities were part of a larger criminal conspiracy conducted during a period of time. Used in federal cases and 33 states as of this year, according to the American Bar Association, RICO laws are touted as the key in bringing down criminal organizations. “While Mr. Steele may be the first defendant found guilty of violating our RICO law, I am confident he will not be the last,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in the release. “This is an important law that will be put to good use as we work to rid our streets of these drug dealers who seek to enrich their lives at the expense of others.” Awaiting trial on similar charges is Andres Garcia, 26, of Chicago who is the ring’s alleged leader. His next court appearance is scheduled today. Steele is due in court Dec. 12.

Contest, book explores why ‘Hope Grows Here’ Family Shelter Service recently hosted a writing contest asking: “Has domestic violence affected you or someone you love?” The contest coincided with the release of Family Shelter Service’s new book, “Hope Grows Here: Stories of Resilience from Survivors of Domestic Abuse.” More than 300 submissions were received for the contest and following are some excerpts. Violence in the home was a common theme: “There was a storm inside COMMUNITY my house VOICE You had to learn to weather Maureen We huddled closely, shelMcGuire ter scant, To hold ourselves together. The lightning struck with sudden rage, And gave no siren warning. The wind ripped floorboards from our souls And did not heed the harming.” Others wrote about mothers and children: “My mother was my rock and I was her crutch. I did my best to keep her on her feet while her inner strength inspired me to continue down the path of childhood. When she collapsed on the couch sobbing, I was the one who hugged her, echoing her earlier sentiment that ‘things will get better.’ And she was the one who wiped away my tears after I was cornered by my father and gave me the guidance to live my life to the fullest as I got older. The physical reminders might not fade away with the whisper of time, but I would always be there, a pleasant memory within her fragile heart.” And one remembered the loss of a mother to domestic violence: “My mother’s name is Margaret, but now we spell it ‘g-o-o-db-y-e.’ My father doesn’t have anyone to yell at in the shadows of a prison cell. Now my mother’s in the sunsets; she’s the leaves dancing in the trees.” But there were stories of hope as well: “Looking at my life now, I see that what has happened to me has given me the greatest gift of understanding. I believe that there is more to me than my story. The darkness that once filled my heart is now full of light, gratefulness and compassion. It is filled with each person that I met on my journey, each glance of kindness, each empathetic listening ear.” Many of these stories demonstrate the hopefulness, strength and resourcefulness that make our work with survivors of domestic violence so inspiring. The top three submissions, which can be viewed at familyshelterservice.org, were chosen by best-selling author Adriana Trigiani, whose work includes “Big Stone Gap” and “The Shoemaker’s Wife.” Copies of the book “Hope Grows Here” are available at Amazon.com.

Power to the people The November election has proven the voters hold the power. We, the taxpayers, will not be fooled by politicians who are nonproductive. Politicians who cheat on their taxes, politicians who are collecting disabilities from the village where they hold office. Politicians who own businesses and vote on laws to benefit their own business. Politicians who are power-hungry, big-headed bullies. Let this election serve as a lesson to all you crooked politicians. You were voted out for a reason. Let’s take the lessons we learned and apply them in the April elections in the village of Stickney and other communities. Remember – vote no to tax fraud.

What we’ve found in our analysis is about one third of the teachers are making more than $90,000 a year. … Not saying they don’t work very hard for their money, but it just puts a lot of pressure on the taxpayers that pay their salaries. ... They’re supposed to be public servants, so we need to somehow in the next negotiations make tiers based on performance. If the students are performing at more than 90th percentile of the state’s criteria, then, obviously, they would earn that salary, but we’re gonna have to adjust the salaries back at least 10 percent in order for the property taxpayers to be able to afford living in Woodridge, Downers Grove and Darien. Our tax bills are astronomical. … We appreciate all you do, but enough is enough. You are indebted to the taxpayers and your salaries must be addressed accordingly.

I recently learned something about myself, something I have been in denial over. I am a racist. … The first time this was brought to my attention was when I did not vote for Barack Obama. … Whenever I did not agree with his policies, it couldn’t have been because I had a different point of view on them. It’s because he is not a “white republican,” as was pointed out by a writer in a recent Sound Off. I believe that to be able to vote, a photo ID should be required. After all, to get a library card you have to show photo ID and documents to establish residency but to think ID should be required to vote is deemed racist. Not wanting the government to have a hand in my health care? Guilty. Wanting immigration reform that Americans could agree with and not agreeing with executive action being taken on it? Guilty. Watching the chaos that ensued in Ferguson and not believing the police officer should be crucified on the spot but rather to let the facts come out first? Guilty again. I could continue on but won’t because I am no longer in denial. I am a racist. To redeem myself, I will no longer disagree with the president’s policies and actions nor will I believe in anything that has caused me to be labeled a racist. But what will happen when a white president of either party is back in office and I disagree with the policies, will I be allowed to be a free thinker again or will I still be a racist?

Books and Music

The good word New books and music to satisfy those on your gift lists

By Melissa Erickson More Content Now The weeks before the December holidays are filled with music and book releases sure to please culture lovers of all varieties. Here are a few of the most anticipated titles and their descriptions courtesy of Amazon.com.

BOOKS “So, Anyway …” by John Cleese In this rollicking memoir, Cleese takes readers on a grand tour of his ascent in the entertainment world, from his humble beginnings in a sleepy English town and his early comedic days at Cambridge University (with future “Monty Python” partner Graham Chapman), to the founding of the landmark comedy troupe that would propel him to worldwide renown. Available Nov. 4. “Lila” by Marilynne Robinson In this new American classic from the Pulitzer Prize– winning author of “Gilead” and “Housekeeping,” one of the greatest novelists of our time returns to the town of Gilead in an unforgettable story of a girlhood lived on the fringes of society in fear, awe and wonder. Revisiting the beloved characters and setting of “Home,” “Lila” is a moving expression of the mysteries of existence that is destined to become an American classic, and is already a National Book Award finalist. Available now. “Mrs. Bradshaw’s Handbook” by Terry Pratchett Subtitled “to travelling upon the Ankh-Morpork & Sto Plains Hygienic Railway,” this beautifully produced gift-sized hardcover with black and white illustrations is Pratchett’s guide to the railways of his 40th Discworld novel, “Raising Steam.” Authorized by Mr. Lipwig of the Ankh-Morpork and Sto Plains Hygienic Railway himself, Mrs. Georgina Bradshaw’s invaluable guide to the destinations and diversions of the railway deserves a place in the

luggage of any traveler, or indeed armchair traveler, upon the Disc. Available Nov. 25. “The Strange Library” by Haruki Murakami A fantastical illustrated short novel in which a lonely boy, a mysterious girl and a tormented sheep man plot their escape from the nightmarish library of this internationally acclaimed, best-selling author’s wild imagination. Available Dec. 2. “Revival” by Stephen King A dark and electrifying novel about addiction, fanaticism and what might exist on the other side of life. In a small New England town, over half a century ago, a shadow falls over a small boy playing with his toy soldiers. Jamie Morton looks up to see a striking man, the new minister. Charles Jacobs, along with his beautiful wife, will transform the local church. The men and boys are all a bit in love with Mrs. Jacobs; the women and girls feel the same about Reverend Jacobs — including Jamie’s mother and beloved sister, Claire. When tragedy strikes the Jacobs family, this charismatic preacher curses God, mocks all religious belief and is banished from the shocked town. Available Nov. 11.

MUSIC “1989” by Taylor Swift The seven-time Grammy winner continues her rise to pop stardom with the her fifth album, “1989,” which she calls her most sonically cohesive collection. The debut single, “Shake It Off,” was an immediate success, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. After being released Oct. 27, “1989” is sure to be a hit with Swift’s many fans. “Sonic Highways” by The Foo Fighters The Foo Fighters’ eighth album features eight songs that were recorded in some of America’s most iconic stu-

dios as the band traveled across the United States. Guest performers include Joan Jett, Rami Jaffee and Rick Nielsen. The making of the album, due Nov. 10, will be accompanied by an as-yet untitled HBO series documenting the eightcity odyssey during which the record was created. “Alpha Mike Foxtrot” and “What’s Your 20” by Wilco Nonesuch Records will release two new Wilco collections Nov. 17 in conjunction with the influential Chicago band’s 20th anniversary. The first, “Alpha Mike Foxtrot,” is a four-CD/four-LP digital box set of rare studio and live recordings collected from the band’s extensive audio archives. The second, “What’s Your 20,” is a two-CD digital compilation of essential tracks culled from the band’s previously released studio recordings. “Christmas at Downton Abbey” The hit television series is making a play for the music charts with a 45-track double CD featuring a festive version of the show’s theme song in addition to traditional hymns and carols. Artists featured include “Downton” actors Elizabeth McGovern, Jim Carter and Julian Ovenden, who sings five songs. Available Nov. 10. “Bruce Springsteen: The Album Collection Vol. 1 1973-1984” by Bruce Springsteen A boxed set comprised of remastered editions of the first seven albums recorded and released by Springsteen for Columbia Records between 1973 and 1984. HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE |

The Uptown Girl’s Guide for Happy Holiday Gifts.

Christmas in Elmhurst

T

he holiday season has arrived, and millions of people across the globe will be celebrating Christmas with their families and friends. The following are some interesting tidbits to share with your loved ones this holiday season. • Each year, more than three billion Christmas cards are sent in the United States alone.

Genuine Alex and Ani Positive Energy in Elmhurst exclusively

• In 350 AD, Pope Julius I, bishop of Rome, proclaimed December 25 the official celebration date for the birth of Jesus Christ. Many historians and theologians have surmised that Christ really wasn’t born this time of year, thanks to imagery and information from the Bible. • Christmas carols began as an English custom called “wassailing.” Individuals toasted neighbors to a long and healthy life. • Despite the common tale that three wise men paid homage to baby Jesus, the Bible never specifically calls out a number. Similarly, there’s no specific indication that they visited the infant Jesus. Their visit may have occurred when Jesus was older.

• Santa Claus’ modern look was inspired by writings from The Knickerbockers of New York and imagery from Clement Clarke Moore’s “A Visit from St. Nicholas.” Moore denied authoring the famous poem for 15 years after it was published anonymously, feeling the poem was beneath his talents. • Santa has his own official postal code. It’s H0 H0 H0.

CSP

• The song “Jingle Bells” was originally written for Thanksgiving and not Christmas. People loved it so much that the lyrics were changed to fit Christmas. • Christmas trees typically grow for 15 years before they’re cut and sold. This means the trees sold today were likely planted in 1999. • Christmas was not declared an official holiday in the United States until June 26, 1870. • Before turkey, the traditional Christmas meal served in England was a pig’s head and mustard. • Male reindeer tend to shed their antlers in the winter. This means Santa’s reindeer are likely female. • Christ may have been born in a cave rather than a manger. According to the gospel of Luke, the shepherds that helped find shelter for Mary to give birth kept their flock in a cave. The Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem is built over a cave called the Grotto of the Nativity, where Jesus is believed to have been born. • Many people may be less inclined to stand under mistletoe waiting for a kiss if they knew what “mistletoe” means in the ancient Germanic language. It literally means “dung on a twig,” for the bird who eats the berries and then leaves seeds in droppings to propagate new plants. • Each holiday season, PNC Wealth Management calculates the costs of the gifts in the song, “The 12 Days of Christmas.” The price index for the gifts went from $12,673 in 1984 to more than $24,000 in 2011. The most expensive gift is the swimming swans.

Holiday Entertaining The only secret you need to know for successful holiday meal planning Victoria offers these tips on how to balance meal prep time: Save on an already "homemade" dessert: The last course of the meal is your final chance to wow guests, but many of the most impressive holiday desserts are also the most time-consuming to prepare. You can serve an outstanding dessert with virtually no prep time and without losing the truly homemade taste, thanks to frozen brands like Marie Callender's. Along with the homemade scent and flavor, Marie's starts your 'homemade' pie for you, allowing time to add your own special touches such as sugar cookie cutouts placed on the pie before baking. For additional homemade elements, be sure to choose varieties that have those special touches you would add if you were doing the baking - like handpicked apples and hand-placed chocolate curls.

(BPT) - You don't need the juggling skills of a big-top performer in order to host a successful holiday gathering. Careful planning, time management and an eye for adding quick and easy 'homemade' touches will make your gathering one for the memory books, while still having plenty of time to enjoy the company of your guests. Don't let poor planning leave you cooped up in a hot kitchen while everyone else revels in the joys of the season. "The secret to holiday meal time-management is simple: Know where to spend and know where to save, without sacrificing the homemade taste" says Victoria Hudgins, an entertaining expert. "Reducing time spent on certain aspects of the meal can allow you to invest more in other areas. For example, instead of spending hours making a homemade dessert, consider a high-quality store-bought pie and some whipped topping to put your own special touches on at home and achieve the homemade look and taste."

What to do with the time you save: Invest in making a main course that will leave guests impressed and full. The extra hour you save on dessert prep could be just enough time to add flare to the turkey, holiday ham or even some knock-out steaks. Save on appetizers: Appetizers set the tone for the meal, so they need to be appealing. On the other hand, you don't want guests to fill up on them and have no room left for the main course. Keeping appetizers light and simple saves room in guests' tummies and saves you time, too. Serve simple two-ingredient appetizers or even storebought options to minimize prep time. What to do with the time you save: Put the time-savings toward more sophisticated side dishes. Along with traditional family favorites like stuffing and mashed potatoes, try something new that might require a bit more prep and longer cooking time, such as a winter squash

Save on topping off your holidays dishes: No one wants to serve dull dishes, and you don't have to spend a lot of time to add pizzazz. Simple touches, like adding Reddi-wip, can transform a variety of dishes. For example, basic eggnog gets a pop of mint flavor and festive color with Reddi-Wip peppermint chocolate egg nog. A whoosh of topping sprinkled with crushed peppermint candies creates a joyful touch on this jazzed-up holiday favorite. Best of all, adding this real cream goodness is just 15 calories. What to do with the time you save: Add more pizzazz to holiday decorating. Create a stunning centerpiece for the table featuring holiday items like fresh pine branches, scented pine cones, pillar candles in holiday colors and even Christmas balls. Incorporate festive touches in table settings, such as napkin holders made from a single artificial poinsettia blossom and holiday ribbon, chair covers in holiday patterns, and place card holders made from pine cones. Save on invitations. Instead of the time and money you would invest in choosing, preparing and mailing paper invitations, use e-invitations instead. It's easy to find free online services that allow you to create and send digital invitations, and many even track responses and maintain an up-to-date guest list. What to do with the time you save: Perfect your holiday playlist. Holiday music playing in the background can underscore the mood of your holiday event. With the time you've saved on invitations, you'll have plenty of opportunity to peruse online playlists and find the perfect mix of holiday songs - traditional, instrumental, country or contemporary - to accompany the festivities. "Getting ready for holiday guests doesn't have to be stressful and time-consuming," Hudgins says. "Substitutions like frozen desserts, additions such as whipped topping, and some smart time management can help you make the most of your prep time, so that you have more precious moments with those you love."

mayo, it added flavor, but the other ingredients cut the heat, leaving just a tasty little kick. My friend’s only regret about her skillet was she couldn’t finish it. The crispy breakfast potatoes with warm soft centers were just too filling. The chilaquiles did not disappoint. We chose to top off the mixture with a pair of scrambled eggs. The light, fluffy eggs paired excellently with the pulled pork and queso fresco. While I liked the red salsa, my

personal taste preference was the tangy salsa verde. The brunch menu, offered from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, includes sweet dishes such as strawberry cheesecake French toast served with fresh berries, creme anglaise and whipped cream. There’s a full selection of morning cocktails, and our server told us the house Bloody Mary is handmade with the restaurant’s own recipe. Specialty Lavazza coffee drinks also are featured.

We stopped in on a Saturday, but on Sundays, a pianist plays the sleek baby grand tucked in the corner from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, live jazz and other entertainment starts at 7 p.m. The dinner menu entices with charcuterie, crab cakes, steak, and Cajun-inspired shrimp and scallops with andouille, bell pepper and cheese grits, one of many gluten-free choices. While my brunch was stellar, I’ll definitely make

BOLINGBROOK – It was a crisp autumn morning when my friend and I walked into Sage Kitchen + Bar in Bolingbrook. The warmth of the restaurant was welcome after the chilly air, and the sun shone through tall windows along the walls of the attractive, contemporary space. We read the menu, debating what we should have for brunch. With some friendly advice from our server, we made our picks. My friend took advantage of the build-your-own skillet option, choosing to top her breakfast potatoes with spinach, cheddar, portobello mushrooms and the crowning touch of a pair of sunny-sideup eggs. Other possible toppings included bacon, bell peppers, goat cheese, red onions, Tasso ham, tomatoes, avocado, andouille, chicken and turkey. Any of these also can be tossed into a custom omelette. I went for the Sage breakfast sandwich, a pretzel flatbread loaded with scrambled eggs, bacon, spicy mayo and avocado. I chose breakfast potatoes on the side, but Parmesan fries are another option. We also had to try the chilaquiles. The bowl of corn tortilla chips tossed with black beans, roasted corn, queso fresco, pulled pork and eggs any style sounded too good to pass up. Our server asked if we’d like salsa verde or red salsa but kindly accommodated our request to have both on the side. As we chatted about our weekend plans, the shops at The Promenade tempted us from just beyond the windows. Our server stopped by to make sure we didn’t need anything else while we waited for our brunch, which fueled us for the rest of the day. My Sage breakfast sandwich tasted delicious. The pretzel flatbread was a favorite part of the meal, lending so much to the bacon and egg classic combo. As for the spicy

Panthers kick off girls basketball season with win By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com CAROL STREAM – A Division I softball recruit, Sarah Petzold, has come up with plenty of big plays on the diamond during her illustrious Glenbard North career. On Tuesday, the Panthers senior showed she can also get the job done on the basketball court. Scoring 10 points in the fourth quarter, Petzold led Glenbard North to a 41-38 victory over Willowbrook in the 2014-15 season opener for both teams. “I don’t like to consider myself totally a softball player or totally a basketball player,” said Petzold, who also played volleyball in the fall. “I like to consider myself an athlete. I just play hard and this helps keep me in shape.” Coach John Chamberlain offered high praise for his senior forward. “Sarah put us on her back there,” he said. “You love your seniors to be ready and willing to do that. She’s a great athlete.” Petzold finished with 13 points and five rebounds. The Panthers were led in scoring by Jennifer Deegan, who tallied 15 points, nine of which came from the free throw line. She also added eight rebounds and three steals. “That’s what she [Jennifer] needs to be for us,” Chamberlain said. “She did a great job picking her spots. She’s a gamer, she is always ready to go. And she has been a starter for three years, so it feels like you

That’s a nice luxury.” Deegan and sophomore point guard Zakiya Newsome are the two full-time returning starters from a year ago, while Petzold started toward the end of last season. Fellow seniors Lisa Lubben, Emma Carlson and Sarah Peters are also back and will help show the way for sophomores Kayla Quanstrom and Frankie Malkin. “I think our stock ticker is going up,” Chamberlain said. “I think we can be pretty good once we learn the new offense and learn our defensive schemes. They do play hard and there are some nice pieces there so I am cautiously optimistic.” Starting the campaign with a victory is a good way to begin. “We all wanted to win,” Petzold said. “It’s nice to start off the season with a win.”

Wheaton Bank and Trust Athlete of the Week, spoke with Suburban Life Sports Editor Jason Rossi about his receiving corps, Hanson’s big day and running a new spread offense this season.

Rossi: What’s it been like running a spread offense this season? Bobowski: Last year on JV, it was a completely different offense, and two years ago, it was wing-T, so we’ve pretty much experienced every offense out there so far in our careers. But coach [Mike] Fitzgerald and the rest of the coaches have done a great job helping us get better every

week and get used to the offense.

Rossi: What’s the key to succeeding in a new offense? Bobowski: I think it’s just preparation. Preparation, focus, a lot of hard work by everyone, watching film and doing what we have to do on our assignments. We know the guy next to us is going to be there for us.
