She wore a blue wristband that read “Kure 4 Katlin.” “She’s just like anyone else; you’d never be able to tell something was seriously wrong with her until you looked at one of her X-rays,” said her mother, Sue Koth. Katlin,11,hasMainzer-Saldino syndrome, which is a disorder with symptoms such as kidney disease, eye problems and skeletal abnormalities. She has the support of her family, teachers and friends, who all make up a fundraising team with the name that appears on her wristband. The team will participate in the Walk for Kidneys health fair and fundraiser Sunday at Soldier Field. The 3-mile walk, hosted by the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois, will raise awareness and funds for kidney disease prevention, education and empowerment programs. More than 2,500 participants are expected to attend. Koth, who attended the walk with Katlin last year, said she began noticing symptoms of the disease when her daughter was less than a few weeks old. “One eye was turning funny, so we started taking her back and forth to the doctor,” said Sue, who’s lived in Car-

Part of that decrease includes nighttime blindness, she said. “The hardest part is it’ll eventually lead to permanent blindness,” Katlin’s mom said. She said Katlin went into kidney failure in 2012, which is when doctors at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago told her Katlin had a terminal kidney disease. “The doctors didn’t think she would make it. We were

in the hospital for two weeks,” Koth said. “I’ve always called her my little trooper. She truly proved it then.” The Carol Stream mother said Katlin was 8 when doctors discovered she had bone abnormalities. The bones in Katlin’s hands are cone-shaped, she said. Despite her condition, Katlin remains optimistic about her future, and she recently graduated from Spring Trail Elementary School in Carol Stream. Katlin said each student at her school made her a get well card when she was hospitalized. Her haul amounted to more than 400 cards. “In one of them, my best

friend said, ‘Miss you; can’t wait to see you,’” Katlin said. “She gave me a friendship bracelet. That made me feel happy.” Koth said her daughter has been in stable condition since the kidney failure. One in three American adults is at risk for kidney disease, according to the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois. Anne Black, chief executive officer for the foundation, said there are more than 1.1 million people in Illinois who have kidney disease. “One of the most difficult things is many people don’t know they have it,” Black said. “The main causes of it are high blood pressure and diabetes, which are silent symptoms.”

Black said the Walk for Kidneys event is funded by corporate sponsors such as Baxter, a global healthcare company, and Astellas, a national pharmaceutical company. More than 100 family teams also help sponsor the walk, she said. “The family creates a personalized Web page, tells their story and can send links to other family and friends,” Black said. “People can make online donations that way.” Koth regularly updates family and friends about Katlin’s condition through the Kure 4 Katlin Facebook page. Koth said doctors told her Katlin will most likely need a kidney transplant when she becomes a teenager. “I know it’s coming, but I don’t think I’ll ever be prepared for it,” Koth said. “We’re waiting for the doctors to say, ‘Now we need to start testing.’ Whenever it’s go time, then we’ll start doing what we need to do.”

Circle Park a step closer to receiving grant By NICK SAMUEL nsamuel@shawmedia.com BLOOMINGDALE – The Bloomingdale Park District Board of Commissioners voted Monday night to provide matching funds for a grant that would renovate Circle Park. Commissioners said the Park District has $167,600 in its budget to restore the park. If the district adds another $52,549 to that total, it will be able to completely match the funds an Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development grant could offer. Executive Director Carrie Fullerton said the project costs $440,298 in total. If the district receives the Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development grant, it will pay 50 percent of the cost and the grant will cover the remaining balance, she said. The application for the state grant is due July 1. “Hundreds of communities are applying for this grant,” board President Sebastian

These renovation plans were developed based on the Park District’s Strategic Plan, Americans with Disabilities Act Transition Plan and the most recent needs assessment. “This is the best thing that could happen to Bloomingdale,” said resident Nick Argentine, who’s lived in Bloomingdale for 28 years. “They’re redeveloping the whole town to give everyone the same advantages.” Fullerton said if the district doesn’t receive the grant, it won’t do the full project and will only replace the playground. Bloomingdale Park District has 13 parks with more than 160 acres of open land space, according to its website. Puccio said studies show that a property’s proximity to

open space and park land contributes to its value. Circle Park has 20.5 acres of open land space and amenities such as a playground, tot lot, walking path, basketball court, football field, two baseball diamonds and a roller hockey rink. “The equipment is no longer safe. There’s a life span attributed to equipment, and we’re well beyond it,” Puccio said. “As years go on, the needs of our customers change. Kids today don’t do the same thing they did 20 years ago when the park was built.” However, some residents feel the district should instead use its funds to clean one of its creeks, which they say hasn’t been cleaned in years. “You’ve got trees that are 20 feet tall in the creek,” resident Ted Pacut said. Puccio said the creek may not belong to the district. He added if the district tries to repair it, it could be sued. “We’ll find out whose creek it is,” the board president said. “If it’s ours, we’ll clean it up.”

Victory Centre hosts Classic Car Show SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA BARTLETT – A few hundred car enthusiasts cruised over to Victory Centre of Bartlett’s third annual Classic Car Show on Saturday to check out the 50 vintage automobiles on display and raise $500 for Child’s Voice charity.

Similar suits were filed in Cook, DeKalb, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry and LaSalle counties on the same day, according to documents provided by Farmers officials. Farmers Insurance Media Relations Director Luis Sahagun said the lawsuit had been dropped against all counties and municipalities it had initially been filed against. “Farmers initiated this litigation in an effort to recover

money on behalf of our policyholders for certain losses they sustained that could have been avoided by the cities and counties named in this lawsuit,” Sahagun said in a statement. “We hoped that by filing this lawsuit we would encourage cities and counties to take preventative steps to reduce the risk of harm in the future. We had hoped to give a voice to customers. “We believe our lawsuit brought important issues to the attention of the respective cities and counties, and that our policyholders’ interests will be protected by the local governments going forward.

Danny Owens, 40, of the 1300 block of Big Horn Trail, was released on $25,000 bond May 30 after pleading guilty to the felony charge, DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office spokesman Paul Darrah said. In addition to a slew of con-

ditions Owens will need to satisfy in order to complete the program, he is required to wear a location-monitoring device, Danny Owens Darrah said. Upon completion of the program, prosecutors will allow Owens to withdraw his guilty plea and plead guilty to a misdemeanor charge of attempted reckless discharge of a firearm, Darrah said. GLENDALE HEIGHTS – The village of Glendale Heights is hosting a community food drive to help deliver food to local families and residents in need through the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry. Farmers Insurance Co. has dropped its lawsuit against DuPage County and several other county and municipal governments, including Carol Stream, Glendale Heights, Bloomingdale, Roselle, Itasca, Bartlett and Hanover Park, after claiming they failed to take necessary steps to prevent and limit damage from the April 2013 floods. The insurance company dropped the lawsuits in early June, DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office spokesman Paul Darrah said, less than two months after initially fil-

ing the claims in court. Farmers had asserted in the suits that flood damage would not have been so great had the various defendants properly prepared for the event and done their “duty to exercise ordinary care to maintain (their) property in a reasonably safe condition,” as stated in Illinois Statute. Farmers said in the suit that the flooding, which caused Gov. Pat Quinn to declare 48 counties disaster areas, could have been mitigated by better management of retention and detention basins, proper operation of tributary open and enclosed sewers and drains,

Volunteer to help raise funds for WDSRA DuPage County is an exceptional area to work, live and play. There are a wealth of organizations whose missions strive to make our communities better for all residents through programs in service and leadership. Many of them are responsible for monetary donations made to groups with missions which align with theirs. Western DuPage Special Recreation Association is fortunate to frequently be a beneficiary of the generosity of these groups. This is why, on occasion, COMMUNITY we ask our supporters to VOICE volunteer for other organiSandy zations and events. These Gbur events are a win-win in that the sponsoring organization does all of the planning, and we just need volunteers to show up and help. Often the number of volunteers working on behalf of WDSRA directly impacts the donations we receive. A perfect example is Ribfest, the wildly popular four-day event sponsored by the Exchange Club of Naperville. Over the years, many of our staff, Foundation Board trustees and friends have volunteered their time on behalf of WDSRA. In fact, members of our Rec & Roll adult day program annually give their time to help set up tables in preparation for the massive crowds waiting to descend July 3 to 6 on Knoch Park. My first year on the job, I had the opportunity to be one of 50-plus nonprofits who received a check to support our programming. WDSRA has been a recipient for many years before and after. Toward the end of the summer, the same situation happens with the Naperville Jaycees Last Fling celebration. We ask supporters to consider volunteering on our behalf. It’s a win for everyone. Volunteers contribute their time at the event and get to enjoy the festivities after their shift, the Jaycees staff their event with volunteers, the community at large enjoys a favorite four-day family fun festival and groups like WDSRA receive funding which goes right back into the community. We know our greatest resource at WDSRA is the wonderful group of people who make up the extended WDSRA family. It is a powerful network of families, donors, sponsors, part-time staff, volunteers, and everyone that has somehow touched and/ or been touched by WDSRA over the past 37 years. We also recognize there are many big-hearted people who just want to help in a very quiet way. We invite you all to volunteer on WDSRA’s behalf at either of these two summer festivals. Your involvement will determine the size of the donation. Be sure to mention you are volunteering on behalf of WDSRA. This is truly an example of community working together.

I was dismayed to read a submission regarding not allowing a woman to beg for money in a church parking lot. Where should this woman go that begging would be deemed more appropriate? I would gather that this woman thought if she wanted to find compassion or mercy, she would find it at a church and in those that attended. I’ve had to beg for food as a little girl. And I can tell you that it is a very humbling experience to put one’s self there, and no, not all people respond compassionately. Isn’t that what the Bible and Christianity teach us, not to judge another, to show compassion and mercy toward the poor and hungry? I’ve been out of work, we all struggle sometimes. Yet, I still give what I can, when I can. I don’t attend the church, yet,[I] will look for her next Sunday, and if she’s there, do what I can to help her.

He added because of how the business has changed over the past decade, being as open to others as possible has become a necessity. “People have gotten busier with their families, kids have many more things they can choose from – we’re no

longer just competing, so to speak, with other golf courses, we’re competing with peoples’ time,” Nass said. But Nass is confident the course will continue to be part of the lives of golfers in the DuPage County area for years. “It’s pretty quiet out here, there’s no highways going by the property, no houses on the property,” he said. “Once you’re out playing, you’re pretty out in a quiet serene environment. Hopefully that helps relieve some of the tensions of the week or day.”

It was McCormick Foundation board member and former Chicago Tribune editor Clayton Kirkpatrick who felt public access golf was important to the area and the foundation. “He kind of pushed for this, not only as a service for the community but also as a way for the trust to generate a little income to offset expenses of the (Cantigny) park and (the First Division) museum that are pretty much free to public,” Nass said. Throughout its history, the course has avoided forcing patrons to pay membership fees to play on its three nine-hole courses spanning 275 acres – something which has kept it accessible for the 30,000 to 40,000 golfers of all abilities and income levels who visit each year. “We do still have a great group of committed, loyal golfers,” said Head Golf Pro Patrick Lynch. “We are kind of the private club experience

What’s the reason the old Amling’s retail property (Ogden Avenue and Monroe Street) in Hinsdale has been allowed to fall into such a horrible state of abandonment? Make a decision –residential or commercial – and get this property up and running. If nothing else, tear down the existing buildings, sod the land and allow this space to become a green space. After that, come to a zoning decision and stick with it. Just letting things go to rot makes absolutely no economic sense for anyone.

Gary Ave., is the brainchild of West Chicago residents Judy and Bruce Duncan. “I knew I wanted to have a place of connection,” Judy Duncan said. “I appreciate people and connecting people, love networking and the diversity of DuPage County, and I wanted a place that would celebrate people and cultures and help them connect.” She said her family has long had a passion for getting to know people different than themselves. Get a delightful experience at Irish Times BROOKFIELD – About five minutes after we’d been served our entrees, my dining companion indicated her plate with her fork, making a loose circle to include everything in front of her. “This – all of this – is awesome,” she said, eagerly collecting another forkful of halibut. A few minutes later, after I’d polished off three quarters of my sandwich, I said without hesitation, “This is the best turkey club I’ve ever had.” We’d stopped into the Irish Times Pub & Restaurant in Brookfield almost on a whim, deciding out of the blue to have a full meal instead of grabbing fast food as we’d originally intended. A quick web search on a smartphone turned up a few likely options in the Riverside-Brookfield-La Grange area, where we’d spent the day. After our first choice turned out to be closed, we found ourselves on Burlington Avenue to check out our second option. The interior of Irish Times is eclectic and homey without feeling cramped. There’s all sorts of memorabilia, some of it obviously Irish inspired, some more nautical, and some just evocative of days gone by. This is no “dive bar,” but a friendly, well-maintained, low-key neighborhood joint with lots of charm. The menu features a full complement of appetizers, soups, salads, burgers, sandwiches and traditional Irish entrees. The appetizers are varied, with items such as corned beef bites, breaded and fried mushrooms, “sleeping bangers” – Irish sausages wrapped in biscuit dough with stout mustard – and “Pedro’s Tacos.” I went for the mushrooms, while my dining companion ordered pretzel bites. I’ve only recently come to appreciate mushrooms after a lifetime of disliking them, so I was taking a bit of a risk with my order. I

Going out on a ‘good note’ By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com EAST PEORIA – Friday’s performance in the Class 4A semifinals was uncharacteristic of a Glenbard North softball team that entered play having won of 25 of its previous 27 contests. Saturday turned out to be a different story. Coming off a disappointing 6-3 loss to Warren a day earlier, the Panthers rebounded in a big way with a 6-0 win against Lincoln-Way East in the third-place game. Glenbard North now has a trio of third-place finishes in its program’s history, with this year’s trophy joining those from the 1996 and 2001 seasons. “We talked about ending the season with a win,” said senior shortstop Sydney Benz, who went 3-for-5 with a run

In their four years, the Panthers won 111 games. “Our senior class has tried to get to this goal for four years and each year we were just a little bit short,” Benz said. “It’s great that our team was able to get over the hump that we had at sectionals and then carry it longer.” Sperlazzo echoed those thoughts. “This is a big deal for Glenbard North softball since they had only gotten down here twice before this,” the senior first baseman said. “We made a statement for our school and for us as individuals. It was just a great accomplishment. “We were like a family. I was never on a team that was as close as we were. It was good to have such great people and we’re going to keep in touch. It’s sad leaving but I’m

happy we left on a good note.” Other seniors who have played their last game in a Panthers uniform include Lauren Gramann, Jessi Ewald, Brittany Clark and Cece Dopart, who tossed a complete game shutout with 12 strikeouts to finish off her career. Next spring, it will be up to holdovers Sarah Petzold and Stephanie Campos to lead the way. “To battle what we went through the last two years,” Glenbard North coach Josh Sanew said, “and then to come back and do what we did with this team, you have to tip your hat to this team. We started the season 5-3 and then went on a run where we lost only three games over our next 30. These kids have taken the coaches on the ride of our lives.”

Dominating Dopart is true ace in pitching circle

By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com CAROL STREAM – Cece Dopart might have a quiet demeanor about her, but the Glenbard North senior’s performance inside the pitching circle this spring certainly spoke volumes. Ascending from the Panthers’ No. 2 pitcher a year ago to the staff ace this spring, Dopart quickly became a dominant workhorse who played a starring role in her team’s third-place finish in Class 4A. “She has always been that shy girl that says ‘let me get out there and do my thing,’” Glenbard North coach Josh Sanew said. “She was a great leader on the mound by the way she gets after it. “It’s unreal, at times during the season, we were playing almost every day of the week. We wanted to make sure she wasn’t getting tired and she would say, ‘I pitched all summer long, give me the ball.’ She waited her turn last year, and she wanted the ball every chance she got. She was amazing.” Regular season highlights were a plenty, from yielding three combined runs in wins over powerhouse offenses like Benet and Downers Grove South to throwing a perfect game against West Aurora to recording every out via strikeout against Wheaton North. Then the right-hander somehow found even another gear in the postseason, allowing just five earned runs while striking out 54 in five complete games as Glenbard North advanced to the state tournament for the first time since 2001. In addition, Dopart seemingly was at her best in the pressure situations, working out of a handful of bases-loaded jams, including two in the supersectional shutout victory over Oak Park River Forest. “In those situations, I just want to make sure all of my pitches are perfect,” Dopart said. “I just make sure I do all my mechanics correctly.” And when the dust settled and all was said and done, the final numbers were staggering. Dopart, whose record was 27-5, gave up 119 hits in 216 innings while fanning 324, compiling

an ERA right around one. “Cece was great,” senior second baseman Alex Caliva said. “It makes it easy for a team to give it their all behind a pitcher like that. She gave us a lot of opportunities to come out and win.” Dopart gave credit right back to her teammates after the Panthers finished third in Class 4A. “I’m really proud of my team and wouldn’t have wanted to be here with anyone else since we had such great team chemistry,” she said. “This was a great group of girls, so I’m happy I got to experience it with them.” The senior was the latest in a string of standout pitchers for the Panthers, including the likes of Hannah Santora (graduate of Grand Valley State), Lilly Fecho (Purdue) and Lindsey Cherry (Lafayette). “She averaged one and a half strikeouts per inning,” Sanew said. “That’s insane, especially with who we played. If [the rubber] was still 40 feet away, what numbers could she have put up? “She does what she does best. She wants to come at you with power and strength. And I think the biggest thing, she loves to throw inside. So many pitchers now pitch away, away. Throwing 216 innings for the Panthers, the righty struck out 324 batters while allowing just 119 hits. Dopart also contributed offensively, knocking out four doubles and four homers while driving in 23.

School: West Chicago Year: Junior Impact: This Upstate Eight all-conference player was a terror on the base paths for the Wildcats. Foreman stole 51 bases, getting caught only once, and scored 49 runs. The junior batted .458 on the season with an on-base percentage of .577 and drove in 18 RBIs.

School: Wheaton Academy Year: Senior Impact: In a career of incredible offensive numbers, this senior did it again this spring for the Warriors. Gagliano batted .614 and also contributed 10 doubles. The shortstop scored 47 runs, stole 25 bases and notched 20 walks while striking out just three times.

School: Glenbard South Year: Senior Impact: This senior put up some big offensive numbers this spring while switching from second base to third. Gerhardt batted .385 with a team-high 11 doubles to go along with a triple and two homers. She also had a team-high 28 RBIs and scored 39 runs.
