Judge issues warrant for Carol Stream woman Streamwood man gets accused of stealing $11,000 from Booster Club 15 years for By NICK SAMUEL nsamuel@shaweditorial.com A DuPage County judge recently issued a warrant for the arrest of a former Wheaton North High School Booster Club president accused of stealing nearly $11,000 from the club, after she failed to appear in court for the second time, said Paul Darrah, DuPage

County State’s Attorney’s Office spokesman. Judicial Circuit Court Judge Daniel Guerin issued the warrant for Dorothy Horky, 59, of Carol Stream, who was charged with one count of theft over $10,000 in March 2013. She entered a blind plea of guilty to that charge earlier this year, according to previous Suburban Life Media reports.

As of Thursday morning, Horky had not been taken into custody, Darrah said. Horky served as president of the Wheaton North Booster Club from May 2006 through May 2011. It was during that time that she was given an American Express credit card, which she allegedly used to take cash advances between July and

November 2012, after her term expired. When Booster Club members discovered the inconsistencies in the club’s financial books, they notified the Wheaton Police Department. A $5,000 arrest warrant was issued for Horky on March 7, 2013. She turned herself in to authorities and was released after posting bond.

Glendale Heights continues food drive tradition By NICK SAMUEL nsamuel@shawmedia.com GLENDALE HEIGHTS – Rows of fresh food cover the walls at the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry, where volunteers and staff members help deliver and organize produce, meats, dairy, breads, pastries and more. These deliveries come from food banks and local grocery stores, and soon, food from Glendale Heights’ annual Community Food Drive will line the shelves as well. “Summer months are the most difficult for food banks. That’s when they have the lowest supply,” said Jason Taetsch, public relations director for Move For Hunger. “All children are home from school. Those at risk for hunger rely on food banks for a subsidized meal.” That subsidized meal is most likely the only meal a child in need will have throughout the day, Taetsch said. Nationwide, there are 48 million people who are at risk

Interviewing family and friends of Rodriguez showed me how families of forgotten victims of gun violence never give up hope and fight until they receive justice. Last month, I received my master’s degree in public affairs journalism from Columbia College Chicago. While at Columbia, I learned important journalism skills such as covering city hall board meetings, reporting on unsolved homicide cases, producing multimedia packages and writing op-eds and interpretive pieces. I also served as the assistant multimedia editor for the Columbia Chronicle Newspaper. Multimedia is another passion of mine. Capturing the emotion on a mother’s face when she finds out her children’s school will soon close makes more of an impact on the viewer than just reading about it in the paper. I’m a backpack journalist, equipped with my pen, notebook, camera and tripod. You got a story you want to tell? Send any news tips to my email, nsamuel@shawmedia. com. Are there community issues you think need to be addressed immediately? Are you tired of your voice not being heard? Well, I’m your new reporter, and I’m here to give a voice to the voiceless. Hey there, Carol Stream. I’m excited to be part of this team and to cover your town. I’m an aggressive reporter who’s passionate about community news, whether it be news on the village hall, park district, education or crime. I look forward to reporting stories from throughout the Carol Stream area, from towns such as Bartlett, Bloomingdale, Glendale Heights, Hanover Park, Itasca, Roselle and Streamwood. Community stories are vital to news reporting. For example, while covering the Austin community of Chicago for a college class, I was able to discover how Austin organizations are formulating ways to fight issues in their community such as gun violence and school closures. These types of stories show how residents collaborate together to fight for a common cause. Also, while taking an investigative journalism class, I was able to learn about how Elizabeth Ramirez, a mother from the West side of Chicago, is searching for her son’s killer. Her son, Harry Rodriguez, was gunned down at his own surprise birthday party on Oct. 23, 2011. His killer still remains at large.

To vacation or not to vacation: the summer business conundrum The weather has taken a turn, and summer has finally arrived in the Chicago area. As a business professional, you look over your calendar and weigh the odds of taking some time off this summer. It goes back to those school days when you had your summers off. Now, with our families, we find the kids have free time, and it may be time to take those family COMMUNITY trips. But what about work? VOICE It seems our work ethic Luanne Triolo has evolved during the past 10 years. What started with Newman summer hours and Fridays off seems to have blossomed into Fridays off year round. A study done by Captivate Network in 2012 found 45 percent of people are more easily distracted in summertime while productivity and attendance each are down 20 percent. But do we really take time off? The answer to that would differ depending on which position we hold at our company. Do those of us in sales ever really shut down? People in sales have a unique vision. They consistently see the opportunities surrounding them each and every day. It may be difficult to turn off. What if we leave it on? The temperatures may be on the rise while the activities are on the decline, but for those looking, they still can find plenty of chances to network and continue to build their business. Some networking organizations may decrease the amount of events over the summer while leads groups may continue as if there was no month name at the top of each calendar page. With some searching, you could find many events held within a 20-mile radius. Membership organizations may alter the type of gathering – luncheon or other – to better fit schedules in June, July and August. Truth be told, summertime is a booming time for many industries. Even the leisurely activities afford us to expand our circles and learn of new possibilities. Whether a ball game or a community concert, these and more occasions can include networking of a different kind. Go into summer and, yes, vacation time with eyes wide open. You may catch a glimpse of some possibilities which could later become new business for you.

Luanne Triolo Newman is the executive director of the Carol Stream Chamber of Commerce.

This is in response to the person who thinks begging is appropriate in church parking lots. Begging is never appropriate or safe in a community where more permanent help is available to families in need. All of our local churches have connections to resources to help individuals get back on their feet. Those who beg in church parking lots are directed to these resources, and those who are truly in need receive help. This prevents unscrupulous people from taking advantage of the kindness of others and allows needy families to receive help with the dignity begging does not afford.

Carol Stream student to participate in four-week Paris fashion program By ANNA SCHIER aschier@shawmedia.com CAROL STREAM – As a little girl growing up in northeast Poland, College of DuPage student Anna Loosli fell in love with fashion, making Barbie clothes for a friend before eventually graduating to her mother’s sewing machine. On Wednesday, the Carol Stream resident will begin a four-week program learning couture techniques at the Paris American Academy in Paris, France. “She’s an excellent student,” said College of DuPage Fashion Studies Coordinator Sharon Scalise, who also is Loosli’s adviser. “She really has a great grasp of the fashion industry.” While in Paris, Loosli will study and visit historical attractions such as the Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay, the Musée du Textile and the Foundation YSL. For her final project at the academy, she will create a draped bustier inspired by

In reality, things significantly improved over the past few years, and President Obama can take a lot of credit. Unemployment has dropped from about 10 percent to about 6 percent now. The stock market is up, and the budget deficit has decreased

Restaurant reviews

37 Bar & Grill takes swing at diners’ appetites BENSENVILLE – On a recent evening, I visited White Pines Golf Club with my appetite in tow instead of a nine iron. I’m not much of a golfer, and my favorite sport is probably eating, so I was tempted by a new menu designed by Executive Chef Rich Mancini, a recent contestant on FOX’s “Hell’s Kitchen,” and former winner of “Chef Wanted” on the Food Network. I quickly came to realize the dishes at the golf course’s new restaurant, 37 Bar & Grill, fit the sports bar vibe and don’t reveal the obvious touch of a celebrity chef’s out-sized personality, which, to be honest, isn’t always necessary. Especially, when the clientele includes golfers hungry for a good meal and a cold beer before heading home. As such, the drink menu has a handful of craft beer selections, including a local option from Itasca’s Church Street Brewing Company, in addition to the regular suds and spirits. The new spot has a big advantage over dark and TVlit sports bar brethren – the entire west wall of the establishment is a window facing the idyllic golf course. On a beautiful afternoon, diners opting to sit outside have an even better view of the greens, ponds and nearby fountain. As my friend and I settled into our indoor seats and browsed the menu, a steady flow of duffers streamed in from the fairways. The salads sounded good, but we went right for the buffalo wings from the appetizer menu, betting we’d be able to handle the spiciest option: coined “inferno.” By the time we were dunking the red-hot chicken in ranch and blue cheese dressing, nearly every table in the place was full. The wings were a standout. They were hot, but not insanely so, and obviously prepared fresh with a perfect crispiness to the skin and a

The other listed appetizers mainly stuck to the typical bar food game plan – quesadillas and pulled pork sliders, among others. I spotted chicken and waffles, a favorite of mine, and almost ordered the dish as a main course. Maybe next time. Instead, I chose the Everything Burger, which piles guacamole, bacon, grilled onions, mushrooms, cheddar and American cheese on top of an impressive half-pound beef patty. It had a satisfying backyard-grilled taste, perfect

The bacon was delicious, and the brioche bun held up well under the weight. The guacamole was a little overly creamy for my taste. Like other sandwiches on the menu, the burger is served with your choice of wide, crinkle-cut fries or homemade chips. I went with the fries, which were perfect. My friend opted for the

house-made chips, which were crisp and fresh, to go with his chicken Parmesan sandwich on pillowy ciabatta. He realized too late that the marinara sauce was missing. That small misstep aside, 37 Bar & Grill appears to be accomplishing what it set out to do – drawing the public in to watch sports, feast on generous portions at reasonable prices, and enjoy the scenery.

year, he put it all together, offensively and on the mound. I really don’t know where we would have been without him.” There were plenty of colleges, from Creighton to schools in the Ivy League, that were interested in possibly prolonging Albin’s career. But already knowing he wants to become an eye doctor, the recent graduate made the tough decision to focus strictly on his studies going forward. “I was all for playing college ball last summer,” Albin said. “That was pretty much my goal. But I also knew what I wanted to do as a career and that I had to get good grades for graduate school. So I decided to focus on my academics and not play ball. “It was hard telling my parents I wasn’t going to play ball anymore, they’ve put in so much money for training and traveling teams. But no one is mad at me, my family has been very supportive of it.” In late August, Albin will head to DePaul with competitive baseball behind him. Though he said he comes to terms with his decision more everyday, he does realize that when next spring hits, a part of him will wish back in a uniErica Benson - ebenson@shawmedia.com form. CAROL STREAM – Matt Albin knew at the start of the spring that the 2014 season would be his last one on the baseball field. Then, the Glenbard North senior went out and made it a special one. Taking over as the ace of the pitching staff with the graduation of Matt Frawley, the right-hander won seven games while posting an ERA of 0.97. Albin struck out 75 batters in 58 innings, yielding only 36 hits. “I did a lot of work in the offseason, and I was physically and mentally ready for the season,” Albin said. In his third year on varsity, Albin said he became more of a pitcher rather than just a thrower. “I’ve always been kind of a hard thrower since I was a little kid,” said the righty, who began his career at age 7 in the Carol Stream Park District before playing travel ball with the Carol Stream Cougars. “Sophomore year and when I was younger, I tried to blow the ball past everyone. But I realized at the varsity level, kids will be able to hit fastballs. “I really worked on my curveball and change-up, working on getting them over for strikes. Working your off speed and keeping hitters guessing is what will win you games.” Albin also contributed at the plate as Glenbard North’s No. 3 hitter after not seeing many opportunities as a junior. He finished with a .327 average, 12 doubles and a team-high 22 RBIs. “It felt good,” he said. “I didn’t really hit last year so it was cool batting No. 3 even though I’m not the biggest guy. It was nice to contribute and help my team offensively.” Glenbard North coach Rich Smelko was very appreciative

Streelman shares record round with family By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com

Suburban Life Media file photo

Kevin Streelman reaches for a club while sizing up the hole at a tournament. The Winfield native and Wheaton Warrenville South graduate set a PGA record Sunday with seven consecutive birdies to close a round as he won the title at the Travelers Championship.

In addition to notching his second career PGA Tour victory Sunday, Kevin Streelman etched his name into the record books with an incredible final round at the Travelers Championship. But the most memorable moment for the Wheaton Warrenville South graduate was having his wife, Courtney, and six-month-old daughter, Sophie, in attendance to celebrate with him. “This is my first win with Sophie there, so that was very cool,” Streelman said Monday. “Coming up 18 and seeing Courtney and Sophie there, that was the best part of it all. “They’ve been traveling with me all year. Courtney has been with me since the mini tours, and Sophie has been traveling with us since she was two months old. She’s been a trooper and an incredible companion.” Streelman, who grew up in Winfield, carded a birdie on each of the final seven holes to capture the title by one stroke, finishing the four-day event with a 15-under score of 265 after back-to-back 6-under 64s. His putter was especially hot as Streelman had nine total putts on the back nine Sunday and played the final nine holes of the tournament in 28 strokes. The seven straight birdies

set a new tour mark of consecutive birdies to close out a round by a winner, previously held by Mike Souchak (six straight in the 1956 St. Paul Open). “To have those seven birdies, I definitely wasn’t expecting that to happen, but it was a ton of fun to be a part of, to be honest,” Streelman said. “I was able to slip in a zone and take it one shot at a time. And those putts, I couldn’t miss them if I tried.” Streelman, who previously won the Tampa Bay Championship this past season, made $1.12 million with Sunday’s win. Before the victory, his best finish of the year came January 3 when he placed third at the Hyundai Tournament. Streelman also finished 14th at the May 1 Wells Fargo event. With the win, Streelman moved up from 86th place to 27th in the FedExCup standings with 956 points. He now will take a couple of weeks off, in part to take a family vacation to Flagstaff, Ariz., before returning to compete at the John Deere Classic on July 7 in Silvis, Ill. “I got off to a good start in Maui [at the Hyundai Tournament], and then it’s been mediocre in the middle,” Streelman said. “Obviously, this win makes up for a lot of that. It’s a great thing to propel forward and get some momentum going into the final majors and the [FedExCup] playoffs.”
