CAROL STREAM – College of DuPage adjunct earth science instructor and Carol Stream resident Rick Polad recently completed his third Spencer Manning mystery novel, “Harbor Nights,” which Rick follows his Polad first two books, “Change of Address” and “Dark Alleys.” The novel was released in May, and Polad now is in the process of authoring the fourth book in the series. Suburban Life news editor Anna Schier recently sat down with Polad to discuss his writing process.

“Harbor Nights,” which is local author Rick Polad’s third Spencer Manning mystery novel, hit the shelves in May.
By NICK SAMUEL nsamuel@shawmedia.com GLENDALE HEIGHTS – Adam Villanueva and his older brother, Brandon, were inseparable. Born on the same day – but two years apart – the brothers would usually spend their birthdays together competing in baseball tournaments. But Adam’s May 27 birthday would be his last. The Glendale Heights teenager was killed in a car crash June 25 in Iowa County, Wis., after the SUV he had been driving was struck by a semitrailer.
Adam, who turned 19 in May, was pronounced dead at the scene. “Brandon feels like he’s lost an append- Adam age. Robin Picart, Adam’s former high school classmate, said she grew up with Adam and attended school with him since kindergarten. “I think I speak for everyone when I say that Adam was a genuinely kind guy,” Picart said. “There’s absolutely nothing bad you could ever say about him. People like that are hard to come across.” Picart said it was unfortunate the accident happened, and that it’s taken a toll on everyone, including families, friends, classmates, baseball players and everyone who
grew up with him. Jen Colburn, another former high school classmate, created a fundraising page called Rest in Paradise Adam on GoFundMe.com to help his family pay for the funeral costs. So far, the page has received $5,563 in donations and has a goal of reaching $10,000. Colburn said she had a class with Adam and his friend Karen Martinez, who was the passenger in the SUV when the accident occurred. She said Adam and Karen were good friends.

Smart meter installations begin in Bloomingdale NICK SAMUEL nsamuel@shawmedia.com BLOOMINGDALE – Bloomingdale took a leap forward in technology Wednesday with the start of the installation of smart meters for ComEd customers. The smart meters, which will replace the standard analog meters, are digital meters used to collect energy-usage information and send it to ComEd, according to the village of Bloomingdale website. At no cost to customers, the meters will eliminate estimated bills and the need for a meter reader to visit customers’ homes. “This allows us to check energy usage more frequently and wirelessly,” said Michael McMahan, vice president of automatic meter infrastructure implementation for ComEd. “We’re excited to bring this to customers. They’ll have better control over their energy usage and more options to save.”
Customers also can enjoy benefits such as 24-hour access to their energy usage information and taking advantage of optional pricing programs, according to the ComEd website. McMahan said the smart meters have computer chips and a radio running on the same frequency as a baby monitor. He added the chips store data at hourly intervals. “The data is transmitted to us six times a day,” said McMahan. But no customer-identifying information is stored in a smart meter or transmitted across the network. McMahan said Corix, a utility infrastructure company and contractor for ComEd, will install 10,200 smart meters over the next five months in Bloomingdale and Bloomingdale Township. He added more than 4 million such meters will be installed in northern Illinois by the end of 2018. Residents can ask for iden-
tification from the installers, and McMahan said their is no charge for installation. “Each resident has the ability to ask the installer for identification,” said McMahan. “If they don’t have identification then that’s not us.” McMahan said the analog equipment ComEd has now runs on dials and technology that have been around for 100 years. He added most customers are all for the improved technology. “In this day and age, I can start my car from 50 miles away and they still have to walk up to your house and read the meter,” said McMahan. ComEd will install the meters between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Customers will be notified by mail when installations are scheduled for their area, according to the ComEd site. The installation takes 10 minutes Photo provided to complete and will briefly interrupt the customer’s electric Smart Meter installations for ComEd customers began Wednesday in service. Bloomingdale.
Bartlett plans concert Semitrailer hits man, 60, on bicycle in library courtyard By NICK SAMUEL
nsamuel@shawmedia.com
SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA BARTLETT – It’s summertime, so you know what that means: Plenty of outdoor music and fun. Bartlett Public Library is inviting the community to come out for free music and entertainment at its Fravinia Concert Series tonight in the library’s outdoor courtyard at 800 S. Bartlett Road. This concert, which starts at 6:30 p.m., features the rock band SODA, which will perform major hits from artists such as Johnny Cash, Cee Lo
Green, John Mellencamp and LMFAO. Friday’s concert is the second concert of the Fravinia series. The final summer concert will be at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 8 and will feature country rock band Billy Croft and the Five Alarm. Families can bring picnic baskets, blankets and lawn chairs. In the event of rain, the concert will be held in the library’s meeting room. For information, contact Mary Smith at msmith@ bartlettlibrary.org or 630213-5041.
GLENDALE HEIGHTS – Glendale police were on the scene at 5:05 a.m. Wednesday after receiving a report of a semitrailer, which struck a bicyclist on Army Trail Road near Gladstone Drive in Glendale Heights, according to a news release from the Glendale Heights Police Department.
The victim, a 60-year-old Addison man, was riding his bike when a semitrailer passed the bicyclist in the same lane and struck him. He was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove by the Bloomingdale Fire Protection District ambulance. “Unfortunately, someone got hurt, but it’s not a fatality. I’m not sure what condition he’s in, but I know it’s
non-life threatening,” said Steve Ewoldt, deputy chief for the Glendale Heights Police Department. “It happened at rush hour. The biggest thing we had to do was close the road for a couple of hours while we investigated.” The truck’s driver, 66-yearold Victor Torres of Crystal Lake, was cited for improper overtaking of a bicyclist on a road.
School earns money from recycling program SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA CAROL STREAM – Collecting and recycling drink pouches has become a phenomenon for Jay Stream Middle School students, so much so students have earned money and prizes for their collections. The students recently earned more than $2,600 for their school by collecting more than 18,000 drink pouches they use at home and in the lunchroom. Their hard work
also put them at the second level in the TerraCycle and Capri Sun Drink Pouch Brigade. The Drink Pouch Brigade is a free recycling program, which rewards people for collecting and sending their waste to TerraCycle to be recycled or upcycled, according to a news release by TerraCycle. The program began in September 2013 when Capri Sun added prizes for collecting certain amounts. Partici-
pants now can receive prizes in addition to the money they earn for each piece of waste collected, such as park benches, recycling bins and playgrounds, all of which would be made from recycled drink pouches. Drink Pouch Brigade has thousands of other schools across the United States participating in its recycling program. To learn more about the program or to sign up, visit www.terracycle.com

Colburn said she also posted the link to her Facebook page

Angela said a variety of people have been donating to the fundraising page, including school friends, parents and former teammates. She added Adam always would tell his friends to “go get what you’re made of.” “I think his legacy is paying it forward and respecting yourself for who you can be,” she said. “He didn’t believe in complacency or mediocrity.”

Flood project will protect neighborhoods DuPage County Stormwater Management, the village of Carol Stream and Carol Stream Park District have recently broken ground on the Klein Creek Flood Mitigation Project in Carol Stream’s Armstrong Park. DuPage County identified this project as a preferred flood control alternative within the Klein Creek Watershed Plan Addendum because of repeated flooding in the area, specifically in September 2008, July 2012 and April 2013. This devastating flooding not only destroyed residential properties but also prevented emergency vehicles from entering the neighborhood. In 2012, the first stage of COMMUNITY the project was underway VOICE with the demolition of the Anthony Carol Stream Park District’s Charlton outdated Aldrin Center, which was removed to make room for a flood storage reservoir. After securing state permits for the project, the first phase of flood mitigation work began this June. In order to alleviate flooding in the area, DuPage County is constructing a two-reservoir system to operate when water elevations in Klein Creek rise. This will help to divert floodwaters from the majority of the nearby Armstrong Park neighborhood. Reservoir One will take in water directly from Klein Creek, and upon reaching a specific elevation, water will be pumped into Reservoir Two – a much larger storage reservoir. Construction has been split into three phases. Phase I includes construction of a gravity-operated flood control reservoir to detain floodwater, as well as construction of a larger storage reservoir with a pump station located where the southern portion of Lake George is today. Phase II involves construction of the pump station to move water from the gravity-operated reservoir into the larger storage reservoir. Finally, Phase III includes installation of a 60-inch siphon under Arrowhead Trail, Indianwood Drive and Thunderbird Trail to convey water from the reservoirs back into Klein Creek once river elevations have subsided following flood events. Construction of all three phases is expected to be completed in spring 2015. Once the flood control improvements are complete, the Carol Stream Park District will enhance Armstrong Park’s recreational amenities, including baseball fields, sled hill, walking paths and children’s playground. For regular updates during construction, visit the Klein Creek Flood Mitigation Project Web page at www.dupageco. org/swm/kleincreek.

Assurance Agency volunteers strike a pose with Western DuPage Special Recreation Association Rec & Roll participant Matt Kuecker (center) on June 24 at this year’s Rec & Roll and Assurance Campout.
Insurance company Assurance Agency recently partnered with Western DuPage Special Recreation Association to host a campout with members of WDSRA’s Rec & Roll program for adults with special needs. The event “buddied up” Assurance volunteers with program participants and featured various outdoor games, crafts and a photo booth. It sounds like a fun time was had by all! When local resident Karen Borow wanted her children to be part of a band even though they were home-schooled, she decided to start a band program herself, and the West Suburban Home School Band was born. Thirteen years later, the group now boasts about 175 members, many of whom come from the Carol Stream area.

In response to “loud exhausts protect motorcycles,” this argument is lame if not illogical. The louder a motorcycle is the better people see you? When does hearing equate to vision? Motorists have their windows closed and music is streaming, outside noise is filtered. You hear a motorcycle when it passes, not before. It is not a siren. Now let’s get to the real reason for extremely loud motorcycles and here he has it right... to be seen. I’m cool, I’m macho, I’m virile.

Insulting president? I am a Lisle resident and I wanted to make a comment on “A lesson in respect.” Once again I see Sound Off has been used by tea-baggers to heap insults on President Obama. I refer to the joke about our elected president being called a lying golfer. When I was young the right wing nuts told us we should respect the criminal President Nixon. But that was then and now tea-baggers don’t care about respect. I guess I can call President Reagan what he was: a senile, unindicted criminal. It’s bad enough to read how tea-baggers use Sound Off week after week to publish their lies and factless views, but to see Sound Off used to print disrespectful, hateful and even racist attacks on our twice-elected president is unacceptable. I believe people have the right to Sound Off but the editors should refuse to publish hateful, irresponsible, racist comments. And for all you tea-baggers, please stop poisoning the pages of Suburban Life with your lies.

CAROL STREAM – When it comes to cracking down on drunken drivers, Carol Stream’s Police Department, along with other suburban police departments, tops the list for number of arrests. In 2013, Carol Stream had 392 driving under the influence arrests, preceded by Springfield with 410 arrests, Decatur with 485 arrests, Naperville with 553 arrests and Rockford with 556 arrests, according to a survey by the Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists. Brian Cooper, traffic sergeant for the Carol Stream Police Department, said 161 DUI arrests have been made so far for 2014. He added officers are well trained for DUI detection
and enforcement. “Typically a drunk driver will require a trip to the hospital for a blood or urine test,” he said. “We do the tests in the station. That cuts down the time and hassle of going to the hospital.” The sergeant said within the past seven years, Carol Stream has had one DUI related fatality. He added other surrounding towns have had at least one or two DUI related fatalities each year for the past seven years. In the same 2013 DUI survey, Carol Stream had the highest DUI rate in the state among departments with at least 200 arrests, with 6.43 arrests per sworn officer. Cooper said there are 26 drug recognition experts in the state who account for 26 percent of DUI arrests.

Restaurant reviews
Kama Indian Bistro forges fusion fare in La Grange LA GRANGE – While my years in the Chicago area have opened me up to a wide range of ethnic cuisines, the joy of a quality Indian restaurant lights my fire in a very special way – and not just because of the occasional burning-hot spiciness. The combination of exotic flavors, the spicy sauces, and the fact that everything is eaten with a bed of delicious carbs – all make it hard to beat. Sometimes, the spices can be a little heavy-handed, overwhelming the main components of the dish – the veggies or meat – and everything else. While that’s not always a bad thing, it can make for a one-note taste. Not so with La Grange’s Kama Indian Bistro. A romantically lit, upscale offering by Vikram and Agnes Singh, it balances depth and accessibility of flavor with all the traditional notes even the most casual of Indian food fans will appreciate. As with any good Indian meal, my date and I started out with an order of samosas, a type of turnover. The first thing we assessed was the fried dough on the outside – perfectly done and crispy without a hint of grease. We noticed that it didn’t smack us in the face with a ton of spiciness, allowing us to better enjoy the vegetables inside, including the small peas that provided a change of texture, instead of simply a tinge of color. Then came the main dishes, all of which hit a similar balance, and offered a distinct example of the restaurant’s deftness at letting multiple tastes shine. The chicken tikka masala was very good, probably the favorite dish of the night. Often, sauces can get weighed down with too much yogurt or cream, flattening a lot of the flavor. Kama’s dish featured protein that was fairly moist with just a hint of char to add a smokey touch, and a surprisingly light sauce that had

Glenbard North’s Brad Metoyer (left) pursues quarterback Brett Gasiorowski on Tuesday during a summer camp practice. Gasiorowski will be back under center for the Panthers when the season kicks off in August.
Countdown to kickoff By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com CAROL STREAM – While Glenbard North’s football team is still early in its summer camp practices, there are already positive signs for a team that has reached the postseason in 11 consecutive seasons. “We are doing pretty well,” said senior quarterback Brett Gasiorowski, who enters his second campaign under center. “It’s a work in progress, but we are getting better every day. Everyone seems to be stepping up and taking on their role. “We have a lot of new kids,

So far, that has been happening. “Brett has taken more control of the offense,” head
coach Ryan Wilkens said, “and his leadership has improved. With Justin gone and not a lot of returners on offense, that role is now his and he has stepped into that role.” The 6-foot-4 quarterback is in the midst of the college recruiting process, having secured offers from Buffalo and Colgate. Cornell, Penn and Iowa State also have shown interest. “I’m trying to enjoy [the recruiting process],” said Gasiorowski, who could either play quarterback or tight end at the next level. “It’s a little different but it is fun. I can only do what I can do and everything

else is in their hands.” Fullback Dillon Warnecke is also back and he will be counted on to lead the way for running backs Vittorio Tricase, who backed up Jackson last fall, and Devion Hodges, younger brother of former Panthers’ offensive lineman D’Angelo Hodges. “Things are heading in the right direction,” Wilkens said. “It’s nice having Dillon back and Vittorio back. We are trying to put it all together up front and build some cohesiveness.” The defense will be spearheaded by senior linebacker Luke Greenberg. “Greenberg is leading the
defense,” Wilkens said, “and he is doing a good job so far. The linebackers are playing pretty well and the defensive backs are playing well at this point.” The Panthers competed at the 32-team Red Grange Classic 7-on-7 hosted by Wheaton Warrenville South at the end of June. They went 3-2 in pool play before falling to Metea Valley and Bartlett in the double-elimination portion of the event. The 2014 season begins for the Panthers on August 30 as they travel to Ohio for a 6 p.m. matchup against Centerville. Their home opener is the next week against Batavia.

Hoops at home By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com LISLE – For basketball players hoping to improve their skills over the summer, trips to far-flung college campuses are the norm. The Players Camp is flipping the script. Players from the University Sean of Illinois and Harrington the University of Wisconsin, including Lisle native and UW standout Frank Kaminsky, will bring the college talent to the kids at a pair of camps Saturday and Sunday at Walker Athletics in Lisle. “I’ve always been around basketball and I attended a lot of camps as a kid,” said Sean Harrington, the former Elgin High School and U of I stand-

out who started The Players Camp. “Being from the suburbs, the schools were hours away and you’d have to pack for three or four days. “I thought, how cool would it be if the kids in college would come to our area? How cool would it be to bring elite players to the suburbs and have kids go out and compete and learn from those guys?”
Frank Kaminsky part of camps that bring elite college players to the kids
Kaminsky played high school ball at Benet Academy and had a standout 2013-14 season for Wisconsin as the Badgers made the Final Four in the NCAA tournament. Kaminsky set a Wisconsin single-game record with 43 points against North Dakota in November, led the Badgers by averaging 13.9 points and 6.3 rebounds per game, was twice named Big Ten Player of the Week, was Big Ten all-conference first team and was the Most Outstanding Player in the west region of the NCAA tournament. Walker Athletics rents out courts for basketball, volleyball and badminton and also has indoor batting cages for baseball and softball. “We’re very excited about this,” said Teresa Walker, secretary at Walker Sports. “Sean is very excited about it, and I
think he picked the right place for it. I’d like to keep it an annual thing because I think it’s a nice thing for the community.” Having players and teams of that pedigree is exactly what Harrington had in mind when he envisioned the camps. “Guys are available only a few weekends of the summer, so it was really the only time to do it,” Harrington said. “Wisconsin was interested in it, so I think it worked out well, and we have a Final Four team with lots of returning players doing it.” Kaminsky will be joined by eight of his Wisconsin teammates at the camp Sunday. Eight University of Illinois players, including Rayvonte Rice and Tracy Abrams, the Illini’s top two scorers last season, will be the instructors at a camp on Saturday.
The camps are for boys entering grades 3 through 12 and offer players the perfect opportunity to get a taste of what college basketball is like. “The camps are going to have drills and activities those guys do at school,” Harrington said. “Campers are going to get a chance to see how the players work out, and the players are going to break down drills and teach the campers.” The camp will be beneficial not only for the participants, but for the teachers, too. Harrington worked with the NCAA and is able to pay the players for their time at the camp. “I had to go through a lot of things with NCAA compliance to make sure it’s legal,” Harrington said, “but I can pay them to do what they love, which is play basketball and teach basketball.”

Hank Steinbrecher shows off some of his soccer memorabilia July 2 at his Glen Ellyn home. The former secretary general of U.S. Soccer, Steinbrecher was a key figure for the national team programs at the time of the 1994 World Cup and 1999 Women’s World Cup when the U.S. won. Erica Benson ebenson@ shawmedia.com
Q&A
Former U.S. Soccer leader enjoying current World Cup
FRICKER BUILDER AWARD: 2006
Rossi: Do you ever want to go back? Steinbrecher: There are certainly things I miss. We hosted two World Cups and the Olympics, and I don’t miss the pressure of it. I don’t miss the politics of sports, and there are a lot of politics in sports. When I left U.S. Soccer, I left on top after we won the 1999 World Cup. There’s no better way to leave.
Rossi: How did you arrive at U.S. Soccer? Steinbrecher: It was kind of serpentine. I played in college (at Davis & Elkins College), then I coached for 11 years and ended up at Boston University (from 1981-84), and I was asked to direct the Olympic venue at Harvard in 1984. Then I went to work for Gatorade as the director of sports marketing, and when the U.S. was awarded the World Cup (in 1988), I was asked to come to U.S. Soccer. I was deeply involved in the World Cups in 1990, 1994 and 1999.
Rossi: What are you most proud of from your time at U.S. Soccer? Steinbrecher: I really think of three things. First, professionalizing the office. Before my time it was kind of a mom-and-pop operation. Second, our win over Columbia in 1994 (the first World Cup victory for the U.S. since 1950). It was tragic, of course, as a player from Columbia was killed afterward, but it was very exciting. Finally, our win in the Women’s World Cup in 1999. Overall, I’m very happy to see where the sport is today in this country.
By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com The U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team enjoyed one of its best runs in the World Cup as the underdog squad survived a tough draw in group play to advance to the knockout stage. Hank Steinbrecher played a big part in building U.S. Soccer to the level it’s at currently. The Glen Ellyn resident and former Secretary General of the United States Soccer Federation – commonly known as U.S. Soccer – started in the game as a player, then as college coach and eventually was a key figure for U.S. Soccer when it hosted the 1994 World Cup and when the Women’s National Team hosted and won the 1999 World Cup. Steinbrecher took time to talk with sports editor Jason Rossi about his time with U.S. Soccer, the current state of soccer in the country and his plans Sunday for the World Cup final.

OF FAME: 2005
n U.S. SOCCER WERNER
Rossi: What are your thoughts on this year’s World Cup? Steinbrecher: This is the first one I’ve missed since 1986. I wrote to Dan Flynn (the current Secretary General of U.S. Soccer) and told him, ‘I know the excitement, I know the pressure and I know the thrill of being there, and I send my regards to you.’ But if I was there, then I wouldn’t be here to see how everyone got excited for the games here. There were 20,000 fans at Grant Park. I was in Atlanta for a U.S. game and went to a bar to watch it and it was jam packed. It was like that everywhere. The sport is taking a major step this year. Rossi: Any plans for the World Cup final this weekend? Steinbrecher: There’s a little Italian restaurant in [Glen Ellyn], Marinella Italian Restaurant, Joe Marinella’s place. They’re having a World Cup viewing party, and that’s where I’ll be. Funny story, I was in Germany [for the World Cup in 2006], and I had tickets for
the final. I called up Joe, and I said, ‘Joe, I’ve got tickets for the final, I’ll take care of you.’ He told me he was having a viewing party at the restaurant and couldn’t come. I sold my tickets and came home and went to the viewing party. Rossi: What was your role in bringing the Women’s World Cup to the U.S.? Steinbrecher: I would say I was a small ball bearing in a very big wheel. To bring the World Cup here, from organizing and the bid process, it required a lot of work from a lot of people. I think we had a head start with the women’s team because of Title IX and the gender equality we had in this country. Rossi: What’s been keeping you busy these days? Steinbrecher: I established my own business, Touchline Consulting, and I do sports consulting. It started out being only soccer [consulting], but I’ve really become more of a consultant to CEOs. Skycam, I’ve been consulting with them for eight years.
