CORRECTIONS Because of incorrect information received from the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, the June 27 article “Judge issues warrant for Carol Stream woman accused of stealing $11,000 from Booster Club” stated that as of Thursday morning, Dorothy Horky had not been taken into custody. Horky actually turned herself in to authorities Wednesday night and quickly posted bond.

Village to see less flooding, thanks to Klein Creek project By NICK SAMUEL nsamuel@shawmedia.com CAROL STREAM – By next spring, residents who live near Klein Creek in Carol Stream’s Armstrong Park can expect to see less flooding in the area. The $12 million Klein Creek Flood Mitigation Project, a joint effort by DuPage County’s Stormwater Management Department, the village of Carol Stream and Carol Stream Park District, will construct a new pump station and two reservoirs to prevent floodwaters from reaching residents’ homes. The project began in early June, and it is scheduled to be completed by spring 2015. When a storm hits, water from Klein Creek will flow to reservoir one, and when the water level reaches a certain height, it will be pumped into

“This is going to stop a lot of water that will go into neighborhoods around the park. This is a big deal. It’s taken years to put this project together.” Frank Saverino Carol Stream mayor

reservoir two, which has a much larger storage area. “This is going to stop a lot of water that will go into neighborhoods around the park,” Mayor Frank Saverino said. “This is a big deal. It’s taken years to put this project together.” Jim Zay, chairman of the DuPage County Stormwater Management Planning Committee, said the county had to apply for a dam safety permit before it could start the project. “We had to wait 18 months for the state permit,” he said.

“They said they had to approve it. That’s why it took so long.” To help fund the project, DuPage County received a $3 million grant from the federal government through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The county also will use $5 million of bond money, and the rest of the project funds will come from county reserves, Zay said. The project is split into three phases, and it currently is on Phase One, which is the construction of the reser-

voirs, he said. The first phase should be completed in late fall or early winter. “We’re building 20- to 25foot berms for the reservoirs,” Zay said. Phase Two is the construction of the pump station, and Phase Three is the installation of a 60-inch siphon under Arrowhead Trail, Indianwood Drive and Thunderbird Trail. The siphon, or tube, will take water from the basins and drain it back into Klein Creek. Jim Knudsen, Carol Stream’s director of engineering services, said there have

been numerous damages to residential properties because of flooding at Klein Creek. The flooding dates back to the 1950s, he added. “Water enters residents’ houses and goes up to the first floor. It does damage to carpeting, wall board, cabinets, furniture, appliances, heating, hot water tanks and air conditioners,” Knudsen said. “These items have to be replaced. It’s expensive to homeowners and the village because we have to help with water recovery efforts.” One resident said she fully supports the project, although she hasn’t personally been affected by floods in previous years. “If it’s going to improve Klein Creek, I’m all for it,” said Kristi Macek, who lives on the second floor of a condominium five minutes from Armstrong Park.

CAROL STREAM – Mother Nature took Chicago and its surrounding suburbs by storm, literally, through a series of thunderstorms with heavy rainfall Monday night. Carol Stream Public Works Director Phil Modaff said the rain brought small localized floods to the village. “I was here during the worst of the rain,” Modaff said. “We had no overland flooding, and none of our stormwater systems had overflowed. We got lucky and managed pretty well.” Although the National

Weather Service reported winds in the area to be in excess of 80 mph, Modaff said Carol Stream had no reports of tree damage. “We’re fortunate we didn’t have significant damage,” he said. As of Tuesday morning, there were no reported power outages in Carol Stream, according to ComEd’s outage map. However, the map showed a small number of outages in nearby towns, including Bloomingdale, Glendale Heights and Roselle.

Family Shelter Service puts focus on trauma Trauma robs people of feeling safe. It interrupts their world view and can alter it forever. Traumatic experiences are more pervasive than one might think. Research suggests about 25 percent of American children will experience at least one traumatic event by age 16. In addition, one in four teens reports some form of dating abuse. While we can never truly know how the past experiences of others might have affected them, it is important we are aware of its consequences and take this into account in all of our COMMUNITY dealings with others. Family Shelter Service VOICE Director of Programs Jen Maureen Gabrenya writes a weekly McGuire Facebook post titled “Trauma-Informed Tuesdays,” which discusses the effects of trauma and how it informs all of our interactions at Family Shelter Service, where we work with people impacted by domestic abuse. Following are excerpts from Gabrenya’s Facebook posts: “At Family Shelter Service, we must recognize the traumas that we as caretakers have experienced and honor the pain each of us suffered as we walk alongside our clients on their own journey. It’s amazing how often we overthink what work with trauma survivors ‘should’ look like. When in reality, healing happens merely by building a relationship and offering small but powerful doses of positive interactions. “Trauma survivors often suffer from depression and a diminished interest in routine activities. They may also lack the confidence to present themselves in a positive way when seeking employment. Family Shelter Service’s Career Club program was specifically designed to help survivors identify and market their skills when conducting a job search. But more importantly, we help them recreate a positive image of themselves – so often forgotten after years of abuse. “To assist individuals seeking Orders of Protection, DuPage County has provided Family Shelter Service with an office space at the courthouse. To help trauma survivors feel more safe in this space, we recently rearranged it to be more welcoming. Now the front desk is always staffed, the space is well-lit with comfortable seating and computers for filling out online OPs offer added privacy.” You can follow Jen Gabrenya’s “Trauma-Informed Tuesdays” posts on Family Shelter Service’s Facebook page, which can be accessed through www.familyshelterservice.org or at www.facebook.com/FamilyShelterService.

Carol Stream police chief retires By NICK SAMUEL nsamuel@shawmedia.com CAROL STREAM – A replacement has not yet been found for Carol Stream Police Chief Kevin Orr, who officially retired Tuesday. Carol Stream Village Manager Joe Breinig said he gave his final farewell to Orr before the retired chief went on family medical leave a couple weeks ago. The village will soon appoint an interim chief, he said.

Orr had fantastic leadership skills and a passion for police work, Breinig said. He became chief around the time of the eco- Kevin nomic recession, Orr forcing him to lead the police department during one of its most challenging financial tasks. “Kevin was a leader in finding ways to reduce expenditures,” said Breinig, who

first appointed Orr as chief in 2008. “We didn’t lay anybody off.” Under Orr’s leadership, the village and police department began to recognize and address core services in the community, he said, adding the department and community were recognized through traffic and safety awards, crime statistics and more. “That speaks a lot about him: to be able to live within your means and lead an organization that performed at a

high level,” said Breinig, who’s worked as village manager for 12 years. “He never disappointed. I would’ve loved to have him stick around longer.” However, Orr met state requirements for retirement, which are 20 years of service and being at least 50 years old, he said. “It’s unfortunate, but it’s within his right to do,” Breinig said. “And that’s what he chose to do.” Orr could not be reached for comment.

THIS AND THAT

Village celebrates holiday, supports military Carol Stream knows how to celebrate Independence Day, beginning with its much-loved annual July Fourth parade. Parade kickoff is at 10 a.m. from County Farm and Lies roads, continuing 1.5 miles east to the Ross Ferraro Town Center at Gary Avenue and Lies Road. At 6 p.m., festivities begin at the town center when the Toasty Cheese and Chicago’s Own Mobile Pizza Oven Co. food trucks serve up a variety of tasty favorites. Then it’s on to the musical entertainment provided by Mellencougar, the area’s premier John Mellencamp tribute band. The 2.5-hour concert, beginning at 7 p.m. in the gazebo, is sure to get the crowd rocking. The evening will conclude

with the fireworks extravaganza beginning at 9 p.m. While on the subject of Independence Day, the volunteer parade committee led by chair Kim Gieser is thankful to the residents and local businesses for their donations and equally grateful to those who continue to support the fundraisers. As a matter of fact, a fundraiser has already been planned for the 2015 parade. A car wash will be held from 10 a.m. to noon July 12 at Joe Cotton car dealership, 175 W. North Ave. The parade committee, family and friends will wash vehicles for $5 per

vehicle. “It is important to support the fundraisers because the July 4 parade is paid for only using donations,” parade committee member Rick Gieser said. “We don’t receive any money from the village to present the parade.” In other news related to charitable giving, the viillage invites residents and companies to contribute to its fifth annual Operation Support Our Troops collection. Donation boxes have been placed in the Bielawski Municipal Center lobby, 500 N. Gary Ave., where they will remain through July 25. Donations will be accepted during the village’s July 17 Summer Concert, which will begin at 7 p.m. at the Ross Ferraro Town Center.

Grand jury indicts Itasca woman for stealing, fraud By ANNA SCHIER aschier@shawmedia.com ITASCA – An Itasca woman is charged with five felony counts after allegedly stealing more than $600,000 from her employer during a period of five years, said Randall Samborn, U.S. Attorney’s Office Northern District of Illinois spokesman. Geena Cepek was indicted June 26 by a federal grand jury, Samborn said. She is charged with two counts of mail fraud, two counts of interstate transportation of stolen funds and one count of credit card fraud. Cepek worked as an office manager and bookkeeper for an unnamed Itasca company from June 2006 to June 2011, when the alleged incidents took place, according to the indictment. During that time period, she reportedly fraudulently issued about 144 company checks totaling more than $474,205 to herself, her creditors and other entities, the indictment stated. Cepek also allegedly falsified company records. Additionally, she reportedly used company credit cards to buy shoes, clothes, fragrances, sunglasses and a purse, according to the indictment, before allegedly having statements mailed to her home and fraudulently issuing company checks to pay off the charges. All counts carry a maximum fine of $250,000, Samborn said. Maximum sentences on the counts range as high as 20 years in prison. Cepek also must pay restitution on the allegedly stolen funds, Samborn said. She was scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court this week for arraignment.

everyone wants a deal,” Bates said. He said the market is interest-rate sensitive, and if rates increase to 4.5 or higher, the market slows down. Broker Catherine Terpstra, who also works for Coldwell Banker, said 28 Carol Stream homes were sold in June and an additional 32 homes are under contract.

In June 2013, 32 homes were sold in Carol Stream, Bates said. The lack of inventory is partially because there are fewer short sales, Terpstra said. Sellers could be holding back because the government has not yet decided if it will extend the Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act, which expired in December, she added.

“Sellers could expect to be taxed on the amount forgiven by their lender, and many sellers are not willing to take that risk,” Terpstra said. On the buying end, some buyers just haven’t found the home they want yet, Bates said. “Lots of buyers are waiting for that right home to come on the market,” he said.

The completely volunteer-run band program pulls in home-schooled families from throughout the Chicago region, but musicians also come from farther away, from towns such as Gurnee. The program is open both to home-schooled children and their parents. One parent who is playing with the marching band this summer is Joanne Talbot of Carol Stream. Talbot said she decided to “attempt” to play the tenor saxophone with the band after promising her kids she would

join when her youngest did. “I have a whole new respect for these children,” she said. The Talbot family has been part of the program for about six years. As a home-schooled family, it can be difficult to find these kinds of activities outside of a school, but it’s not as hard as it used to be, Joanne Talbot said. More and more activities specifically for home-schooled children are popping up, from sports to music and art, she said. “We kind of have to find these things, and we want them

to be involved and have a normal school experience in that sense, but for me, for my family, music has always been really important,” Talbot said. But beyond music education, the West Suburban HomeSchool Band also provides important social opportunities to its participants. “This is really different being part of a team,” she said. Anna Fisher, 14, became a member of the team when she was 9. The Aurora resident did not play any instrument when she started with the band, but she is now a French horn play-

er with the program’s most elite bands, senior and symphonic. Anna’s two younger brothers play with the program as well. Their family first learned of the West Suburban Home -School Band from another home-schooled family. Borow said many people learn about the band that way or from seeing them perform. Because the group is not associated with a school, spectators are sometimes surprised by what they hear – in a good way, she said. “I think a lot of people are pretty surprised we play at the level we do,” Borow said. Anna has made many friends since joining the band, and she said the past five years have been a lot of fun. But in addition to the relationships she’s made with her peers, she’s also developed a special bond with something else – music. “I love to play music because of this band,” Anna said.

Growing up, Winfield resident Karen Borow knew the importance of music in her life. A member of several bands throughout her school years, Borow wanted the same experience for her own children. The only issue was that they were home-schooled, leaving them without a school band to join. “I knew that for me, for my upbringing, band was really important to me,” she said. A local private school allowed the Borow kids to play with their band, but that soon became hard to do with the family’s schedule, so Karen Borow decided to take matters into her own hands and founded the West Suburban Home-School Band in September 2001. What she expected to be a group of about 10 kids playing together in her basement now boasts about 175 members, with many coming from the Carol Stream area. The group practices each week in Wayne, near Bartlett. “It just grew like crazy,” Borow said. The program has grown over the years in terms of band offerings as well. It now has four levels of concert bands – cadet, junior, senior and symphonic – and a summer marching band. To prepare for its performance season, the marching band completed a week-long training camp June 16 through 20 at the DuPage County Fairgrounds in Wheaton. The group now will march in sev-

CAROL STREAM – In Carol Stream, home sales decreased by 22 percent between May 2013 and May 2014, according to a report from the Mainstreet Organization of Realtors. The report, which includes sales of detached single-family

homes, shows 21 homes were sold this May compared to 27 in May 2013. There’s an oversupply of buyers and a shortage of homes, said John Bates, real estate broker for Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, which serves Carol Stream. “Supply is obviously a factor, but interest rates are an even bigger factor because

Cooper’s Corner stakes claim on big flavor

Cooper’s Corner proves a great new addition to the dining scene in the Winfield and Wheaton area.

WINFIELD – When friends recommended Cooper’s Corner, we decided to pay a visit to the restaurant that opened earlier this year in the spot that once housed the venerable Viking. We walked in on a Friday night to the sound of live music and were offered a choice of seating in the expansive lounge near the band or one of the dining rooms. We opted for the dining room closest to the bar for a happy medium. The space is updated, yet preserves classic old-school steakhouse charm with large booths, banquettes, tables with comfy chairs and lots of elbow room. And while the chef puts plenty of emphasis on roast beef, steak and other red meat dishes, there’s a healthy accent on seafood, pastas, freshly prepared crab cakes, sandwiches and other options that make the decision of what to order pleasurably conflicted. We opted to try the stuffed sesame portabella appetizer, which complemented the meaty mushroom with goat cheese, caramelized onion, and roasted red pepper that popped. “It’s an interesting blend of flavors and textures,” raved my date. We each chose soup over salad: a creamy clam chowder and a baked onion. The latter was good, but a tad salty. My selection of an entree became easy when I spotted the slow-roasted prime rib featured at the top of the menu, and chose the smallest of the three portion choices. It arrived rare per my request, and was sublimely tender and juicy. Its side dish was a superb mix of sauteed zucchini, broccoli, carrot, squash and onion cooked al dente. My companion chose one of the evening’s specials: the baked berry Florentine stuffed pork loin. The fruit topping made it a memorable dish. A massive portion, we enjoyed it for lunch the next day.

TOP 6 SPRING SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS

By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com The spring sports season has concluded and now is the perfect time to take one more look at the best moments from the spring sports season for Glenbard North and West Chicago.

1. Softball state trophy With a veteran group back in the fold, big things were expected from Glenbard North’s softball team this spring and the Panthers didn’t disappoint. Coming off backto-back heartbreaking losses in the sectional final, the squad pushed past that point with a 6-5 come-from-behind win against Conant and then advanced downstate with a 4-0 win against Oak Park in a Class 4A supersectional. Glenbard North lost to eventual state champion Warren before bouncing back to post a victory against Lincoln-Way East for a thirdplace trophy. “Our senior class has tried to get to this goal for four

years and each year we were just a little bit short,” Sydney Benz said. “It’s great that our team was able to get over the hump that we had at sectionals and then carry it longer.”

2. Panthers badminton takes sectional Glenbard North’s badminton team captured a sectional title and sent two singles players and a pair of doubles teams to the state meet. Once there, the duo of Sami Ege and Jhovie Valmonte won a pair of matches while Jen Kraco, Trisha Cordero and the grouping of Kathy Perkins and Sam Yocum also competed.

3. Soccer’s strong season The 2014 season was a banner one for North’s girls

soccer team, which notched 14 victories on the spring, including a win over defending state champion Naperville North. In addition to winning a playoff game and advancing to the regional final, the Panthers also finished second in the DuPage Valley Conference.

more than quadrupled its win total from a year ago with 18 victories. No doubt the highlight of the spring came late in the year when the Wildcats rattled off three straight wins to capture the Class 4A Lake Park regional title, capped off by a 7-4 decision against the host Lancers.

4. Carr captures track medal

6. State track yields all-state finishes

A veteran at the IHSA girls state track meet, Simone Carr wrapped up her standout career at Glenbard North by bringing home an all-state medal. The senior finished fifth in the 400-meter dash in a time of 56.96. Carr also teamed with Jaqui Howard, Katy Murphy and Keina Suggs to compete in the prelims of the 4x100 relay while Allison Wahrman advanced downstate in the long jump, high jump and triple jump.

5. West Chicago baseball bounces back What a turnaround it was this season for the West Chicago baseball team, which

The duo of Matt Ruff and Ty Seager gave Wheaton Academy a strong presence at the state track meet. Ruff closed out his high school career by finishing seventh in the 400-meter dash while Seager was seventh in the 200 and eighth in the 100 in his first season of track. West Chicago’s Nate Wesolek also notched all-state status, finishing ninth in the Class 3A pole vault. “It was my first time making the finals, and that was one of my goals,” Ruff said. “I’m thrilled. To be on the podium and get a medal, that’s what I’ve always wanted to do since freshman year.”

Glenbard North’s Simone Carr competes in the preliminaries of the 400-meter dash at the Class 3A state meet in May. Carr went on to capture a state medal in the event with a fifth-place finish.

Toni Kukoc takes a quick break from working with young basketball players during his camp held at the Bulls/Sox Academy in Lisle last week. The former Chicago Bulls star has turned into an avid golfer in retirement. Mark Busch - mbusch@shawmedia.com

Q&A

Retirement life ‘is perfect’ for former Bull By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen endure as all-time great players for the Chicago Bulls. However, Toni Kukoc earned his own spot in Bulls’ lore in 1994 when he hit a buzzer-beater to defeat the New York Knicks in a playoff game. That was near the end of the his rookie season, after which he went on to play in Chicago until the 1999-2000 season. Kukoc officially retired from professional basketball in 2006, but he was back on the court this past week hosting and coaching a camp at the Bulls/Sox Academy in Lisle. He took time from working with camp participants to speak with Suburban Life sports editor Jason Rossi about the camp, his retirement, his native Croatia’s involvement in the World Cup, and his famous last-second shot. Rossi: What has kept you busy in retirement? Kukoc: Not much. Play a

little golf and watching basketball. That’s pretty much it. Life is perfect. I became like a golf addict, so as long as the weather is nice I can go and golf. Rossi: What are your thoughts on the camp? Kukoc: It’s a fun time for the kids. We’re trying to work on fundamentals of the game and teaching them to play the right way and have fun while doing it. Rossi: What’s the biggest fundamental you try and get across to the kids? Kukoc: There’s a theme [to

the camp] and it’s listening. Just listening to the coaches and trying to put all that we say back onto the court. It’s easy to forget after five minutes what the coach said and just do it the easy way or do it your own way, but we’re trying to get them to listen to the little details we put in their ears and get them to put it back on the court. Rossi: What was it like playing for the Bulls when they were at their peak? Kukoc: I don’t want to say it was easy; it was hard, but at the same time it was a lot of fun just for the fact that the expectations were high and the ultimate goal of winning a championship was the only goal. Everything else was a failure. It was a high standard, but it wasn’t something where the goal was put so high that it wasn’t reachable. So we came to the first day of camp with the idea that if we played together and put our minds in the same place that our goal was achievable,

and it was, three times. Rossi: What do you miss most about playing? Kukoc: The competitive nature of it that we all had. In golf, the U.S. Open or the World Cup in soccer, you see how much the guys want it, how much they grind for it, how much the fans are into it and that’s when that competitive spirit of mine shows up and boils inside of me again. Then reality hits you, and when I try to overdo it, the body says ‘No, I don’t really think so.’ It brings you back to Earth, but that’s the part you miss the most. The games you won by 20 or 30 you don’t remember, but those last-second shots or the last-second defensive stops, those are the ones you remember and the ones people remind you about. Rossi: Is that last-second shot against the Knicks your career highlight? Or is there something else you think back on? Kukoc: I hit more than a couple [shots like that], but

I’d say championships are more the measurement of your success as a basketball player. So all the championships, with all the stuff I did in Europe at first and then in the United States, are kind of the highlights. The individual stuff is always there, but it doesn’t mean as much if nothing happens team-wise. The shots you hit are great, but championships are what measures somebody’s success. Rossi: Have you been watching much of the World Cup? Kukoc: I’ve watched a lot of it. I watched Croatia, that’s my team. I watched the United States because that’s my team, too. Obviously I’m happy the States advanced and a little disappointed Croatia didn’t. Rossi: Do you ever get together with your former teammates and play some basketball? Kukoc: No, but every once in a while we play golf and we enjoy the competitive nature that way.
