I thought that was pretty cool.” Adams said both sisters are modest and hardworking employees, and they have been off work since the transplant. It will be more time before Daisy can return because she’s at a higher risk of infection than Brenda.

Daisy is taking this semester off from school and going to the doctor every two weeks to make sure the new kidney is working. She would have started her junior year at the University of Illinois at Chicago this fall. “Now I feel perfectly fine, but the doctor said I had to take it easy,” she said. “I can’t lift heavy things, work out and have to avoid sick people because my immune system is very low.” Out of 120,000 Americans currently on the waiting list for a lifesaving organ transplant, more than 99,000 need a kidney, according to the National Kidney Foundation. Fewer than 17,000 people receive one each year. Daisy thanks God for what she has and said she is better off now than she was for the past two years. Brenda added she is thankful to Amy and everyone who supported them. “People should really think about being a donor because it does save lives,” Brenda said.

CAROL STREAM – Nerves ran through Brenda Martinez’s body July 17 as she prepared to undergo a kidney transplant surgery that would ultimately save her younger sister’s life. Her sister, Daisy Martinez, 22, suffers from end-stage renal disease, which is a permanent kidney failure most often caused by diabetes or high blood pressure, according to the American Kidney Fund. Individuals with this disease will need dialysis or a kidney transplant to live. To help the Martinez family pay for medical expenses, the Culver’s in Carol Stream where both sisters have worked for several years hosted a fundraiser in late August that generated more than $5,000. “They were both overwhelmed by all the attention that’s come to them,” Culver’s owner Amy Adams said. “This shows what a wonderful community we live in, how supportive it is and how people are willing to help each other. We can provide the venue, but it’s up to the community to make it happen, and they sure did.” For the fundraiser, the restaurant donated 50 percent of sales Aug. 26 to the Martinez family. Brenda, 24, said her mom originally agreed to be Daisy’s donor, but after both she

This basin, south of Stearns Road, collects floodwater from Beaver Pond.

Stormwater Management also built a 60-inch pipe in addition to the existing smaller pipe that will take floodwater under Stearns Road and into the basin, Zay said. “When it reaches 11 feet, the water flows back into

Brewster Creek,” he said. The project also installed nearly 5,000 feet of bypass storm sewer in nearby Wayne Grove Forest Preserve to redirect floodwater and reduce drainage backups, according to county documents.

BARTLETT – The completion of a nearly three-year flood control project marks a new beginning for Bartlett residents tired of floodwater creeping into their homes. Representatives from DuPage County Stormwater Management, the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County and the village of Bartlett celebrated the realization of the about $5 million Brewster Creek Headwaters Project with a ribbon cutting Aug. 28. The purpose of the project, funded through a 2010 DuPage County bond, is to reduce flooding northeast of Illinois Route 59 and Stearns Road, according to county documents. Before the project, Beaver Pond on the north side of Stearns Road only had a small drainage pipe that would overflow, causing local homes and businesses to flood, said Jim Zay, chairman of the DuPage County Stormwater Management Planning Committee. The pipe discharged floodwater into Brewster Creek, which is south of Beaver Pond. “There’s nothing worse than going to a person’s house, and they’re showing you 3 feet of floodwater,” Zay said. “Route 59 would be closed from time to time because of

Flooding in Bartlett was at its worst in 2008 because of unusual storms, Village President Kevin Wallace said. “It was a disaster. Hundreds of residents were impacted, and people had water flowing in their basement,” Wallace said. “It brought to light there were some draining issues because the water wasn’t going anywhere.” These storms led the village to alert the county and push the need for this project. Wallace said he thinks Stormwater Management has done an amazing job to address the flooding. In addition to helping human residents, the work that was done also will benefit local wildlife. The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County placed wetland plants into the basin to provide a better habitat for the 12 endangered species living in the area, Commissioner Shannon Burns said. “The roots of the plants are designed to soak in water. A combination of the plants and soil help to filter the water as it drains,” Burns said. “The more clean water we have, the better the habitat.”

To the editor: I was surprised to learn of the landscape waste transfer station on Kuhn Road that was approved by the Carol Stream Village Board at the Aug. 18 meeting. The waste station will be located on Kuhn Road, north of North Avenue next to the fire and water reclamation stations, but more concerning, it’s just a short distance from a wide swath of Carol Stream homes and residents. The facility will have the capacity to handle 450 garbage trucks and 200 semi-trailers each and every week that can come in and out of this facility. The Kuhn Road corridor has nothing like this; it’s not a suitable area for trucks hauling waste, and I was shocked the Village Board would approve this without additional input from residents. As of Aug. 22, the village had next to no information on its website that this facility was even being considered. Besides simply being inappropriate for Kuhn Road, the substantial amount of garbage trucks and semitrailers coming in and out of this facility will undoubtedly leave landscape waste on the road. And the 600plus garbage and semitrucks will produce unexpected results with traffic patterns near this highly populated residential area, as there was no traffic

study conducted. The existing Kuhn Road traffic control light turns green for a fleeting moment as it is today – imagine adding more than 600 trucks a week. This waste facility and the hundreds of garbage and semitrucks that will accompany it is completely and wholly out

Carol Stream establishes zoning for medical marijuana facilities By NICK SAMUEL nsamuel@shawmedia.com CAROL STREAM – Medical marijuana facilities are now part of Carol Stream’s Zoning Code. On Tuesday, the Carol Stream Village Board of Trustees added medical marijuana cultivation centers and dispensing organizations as special uses for certain zones in the village through an ordinance that passed unanimously. use in the I Industrial District, according to the approved ordinance. If built, a center would cultivate and package medical marijuana and then distribute it to a dispensing organization. Medical marijuana dispensing organizations are now included as a special use in the

village’s B-4 Office, Research and Institutional Building District. These organizations provide the marijuana to qualifying patients or caregivers registered by the Illinois Department of Public Health. A four-year medical marijuana pilot program was cre-

ated in Illinois after Gov. Pat Quinn signed the Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Pilot Program Act in 2013. It took effect Jan. 1. Under the program, towns are not allowed to ban these facilities from locating within their borders, according to a village memo. “It’s a state mandate; we can’t prohibit it,” Village Manager Joe Breinig said. “Other communities are doing these things as well.” State agencies such as the Department of Public Health,

Department of Agriculture and Department of Financial and Professional Regulation have developed rules, regulations and application forms for registering or approving qualified patients and caregivers, medical marijuana cultivation centers, and medical marijuana dispensing organizations, the memo stated. The state act allows 40 illnesses to be eased with medical marijuana, Breinig said. “I’m sure residents can benefit from this treatment,” he said.

For those parents who recently loaded up the car and dropped their kids off at college, the excitement of another year of school is tempered by another year of looming tuition bills and ever increasing education expenses. To take some of the guesswork out of financial planning, the House passed the Strengthening Transparency in Higher Education Act, which creates a consumer-tested College Dashboard, giving students and parents the tools to fully understand the total cost of college before deciding where to COMMUNITY continue their education. VOICE Another bill, the EmPeter powering Students Through Roskam Enhanced Financial Counseling Act, provides interactive counseling through an online tool each year a student participates in a federal loan program. By increasing loan awareness and financial planning before and throughout the college experience, we can eliminate surprise expenses and ensure students work through available grant and scholarship options to shrink the size of their student loan. The House also passed two bills that would streamline the tax code, making it easier for families to use tax credits to make college more affordable. The Student and Family Tax Simplification Act consolidates four existing education provisions into a single, modernized and permanent American Opportunity Tax Credit that families can use to offset tuition expenses, fees and course materials. Middle- and low-income families would be eligible for a 100 percent tax credit for the first $2,000 of eligible higher education expenses and a 25 percent tax credit for the next $2,000 of such expenses, providing relief for those who need it the most. The House also voted to reform the Child Tax Credit, indexing it to inflation and eliminating the marriage penalty so families can more easily receive their full eligible amount. Simplifying education tax credits ensures families can get the most savings possible, and students can spend less time worrying about financing their education, instead focusing on developing the skills necessary to enter the workforce. Obtaining a quality education is key to bettering the lives of our children and ensuring their long term success, and getting a college degree shouldn’t mean a lifetime of student loan debt. These common-sense, bipartisan bills are a big step toward tackling the cost of higher education, and opening up more opportunities for the next generation.

Humanitarian Service Project volunteer Eddie Robles (from left) and Senior Citizen Project Coordinator Michelle Heron prepare to deliver groceries to seniors in need Aug. 16 at the project center in Carol Stream.

Humanitarian Service Project and Allured Business Media – both in Carol Stream – are partnering to help a senior in need. The media company will match up to $7,500 in donations made to the project by Oct. 17. The $15,000 the groups hope to raise will allow another senior to be part of the Senior Citizen Project, which provides elderly DuPage and Kane County residents with groceries and toiletries. Participants of Western DuPage Special Recreation Association’s Rec & Roll Day Program in Carol Stream took the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge in August after watching an educational video about ALS, commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The challenge has helped to raise millions of dollars for research into the progressive neurodegenerative disease. Way to go Rec & Rollers! Old Vilnius Café imports taste of Lithuania DARIEN – Although I knew nothing about Lithuanian food, my companion was thrilled when I asked him to join me for dinner at Old Vilnius Café, named after the country’s capital. Inside the door sits a gift shop full of Lithuanian wares, many celebrating the 1992 bronze-medal Lithuanian Olympic basketball team. Mugs, T-shirts and amber jewelry line the shelves. The shop opens up into a small deli offering traditional candy, Lithuanian magazines and a variety of goodies to take home. Beyond the gift shop, the intimate dining room is a mix of cozy and elegant, with black padded leather chairs and dark wood furnishings lit softly by wall sconces. Old Vilnius Café serves Lithuanian and Eastern European cuisine, with dishes made in-house from scratch. During our visit, the waiter apologized when my companion ordered zeppelins, because the traditional dish of grated potato dumplings stuffed with minced meat had sold out, but he gladly offered a fried version as a substitute for the boiled. After reading through the menu, I decided to start with an appetizer of fried Lithuanian bread served with a warm cheese and garlic sauce. The strips of crispy bread were piled into a large bowl and smothered in gooey cheese. It was delicious, but very rich. I was glad to have someone helping me dig in before our main courses arrived. My companion sipped on warm red beet soup, borszcz, which I sampled and really enjoyed. A cold variation of the soup also is an option. Although our waiter tried to warn us, we ordered much more food than we could finish, but the place was a meat and potato lover’s paradise that proved hard to resist. Because it was my first time eating Lithuanian food, I

They came with a side of sour cream and bacon tidbits, as did many items on the menu. The savory dish was a delicious balance of starchy potatoes, salty bacon and cool sour cream. a bit of everything. His plate arrived loaded with fried zeppelin, potato sausage, kugelis, Lithuanian sausage and sauerkraut. Of course, bacon and sour cream added their decadent flourish. My favorite was the kugelis, a baked potato cross between cake and pudding. It reminded me of twice-baked potatoes, but the best I’d ever had. In addition to a wide range of European chicken, beef and

pork entrees, the menu offers several all-American options such as chicken wings, Caesar salad and a bacon cheddar Angus burger. We ended up boxing half of our dinner to take home, but if I hadn’t been so stuffed, I would have loved to try a slice of raspberry cheesecake or chocolate lava cake. Cocktails, Lithuanian beer and wine also are featured. Old Vilnius Café combines

ethnic cuisine with a welcoming atmosphere and plenty of options for Lithuanian food fans and those less familiar with the hearty dishes.

Outlook: Coming off a 26win campaign in 2013, Wheaton Academy returns a senior-dominated roster this fall, though many haven’t started in previous seasons. “The girls are progressing at a good pace so far this year,” coach D.A. Nichols said. “Our strengths will be this team’s competitive nature. We have the talent to compete and be a very good team, but we will have to improve steadily to be ready for postseason play.” One major change is the Warriors will now be competing in the Metro Suburban Conference after switching over from the Suburban Christian. “We want to start strong in our new conference,” Nichols said. “There is something that’s energizing about a new setting and fresh start with this new conference. The girls feel a push to show the best of Wheaton Academy and the volleyball program.” Wheaton Academy will be tested throughout the season, including at the twoday Wheaton Classic tournament.

Outlook: Anne Mastandrea, a Downers Grove South grad who played collegiate volleyball at Purdue, takes over the Panthers after being an assistant at Glenbard West for three years under her dad, Pete Mastandrea. “It’s been really exciting,” Mastandrea said. “The girls in the summer caught on quick and they are excited about the changes and expectations going forward. They are really, really great kids. We’ve got good leadership and they love playing volleyball. “I’ve gotten a really good response in my first year.” Glenbard North is currently in the building stages as a program. “I’d like to take the program to the next level,” the coach said. “The girls are working really hard and they deserve to see success that maybe they haven’t seen in the past. They deserve to do well. “They want to do well, now it’s about teaching them how to get there and how to overcome times of adversity because we will see that. We will struggle but we have to push through.” The Panthers do return a nice core of players in Nicole Tobison, Stephanie Cole, Haley Wiser and Emily Krohn. “We asked the girls, what

Northwestern’s Jackson scores TD in collegiate debut SHAW MEDIA EVANSTON – The legend of Justin Jackson continues to grow. Having moved up to No. 2 on the depth chart at running back in his initial season at Northwestern, the Glenbard North graduate and Wildcats freshman didn’t have to wait long to make his debut as he played in his first collegiate game Saturday against California. Jackson topped the team with 40 yards rushing on

eight carries against the Golden Bears and also found the end zone on a 7-yard run in the third quarter. He added a catch for four yards. Last season, as a senior at Glenbard North, Jackson rushed for 3,171 yards and 38 touchdowns and was named Suburban Life Player all-area team MVP. Northwestern, which fell 31-24 to California, hosts Northern Illinois at 2:30 p.m. Saturday and then welcomes Western Illinois on Sept. 20.
