New DeKalb-Elgin program offers schoolchildren summer enrichment

DeKALB – DeKalb School District 428 and the Boys and Girls Club of Elgin are joining forces on a summer enrichment program, meant to help give DeKalb area children and their families another option this season.

The idea was spurred after a recent site visit to the Boys and Girls Club of Elgin, which school officials said went so well it prompted a memorandum of understanding which was approved this week.

Billy Hueramo, the district’s director of teaching and learning – elementary, said the new summer enrichment program offering comes at a perfect time for area children and their families.

“At first, it had nothing to do with the pool not being there,” Hueramo said. “This is an added benefit for our kids. … It was going to happen, regardless.”

The summer school aftercare enrichment program, which will run from noon to 5 p.m. May 30 through June 26, school board documents show. Breakfast and lunch will be provided to participating students.

Hueramo said students who take part in the enrichment program can expect a lot of variety, and include activities featuring science, technology, engineering, arts and math learning (STEAM).

“It’ll be a lot of hands-on things – getting them outside, doing physical activities,” Hueramo said. “They want to do activities at Lions Park, as well. They’re going to incorporate STEAM.”

In its inaugural run, Hueramo said programming will be capped at 150 students, from pre-kindergarten to fifth grade. He said participation in the program is first come, first served.

PUZZLE ANSWERS puzzlesonpage16

“It’s a pilot to see how successful it is,” Hueramo said. “We’ll get feedback from our parents to see how they liked it because once we open up Mitchell Elementary, we’d like to have it there and then see if we can have it expand more it depending on well it goes and how much participation we get from our families in our community.”

The district has been sending out flyers to families through the district’s Skyward platform, officials said. Originally, the enrichment program was limited to those in summer academy but has since been expanded to students districtwide.

Hueramo said transportation will be provided for students enrolled in summer academy only.

The program, while it is free for students, is paid for by the district using $128,250 in Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief III grant funds, school board documents show.

Superintendent Minerva Garcia-Sanchez heaped praise on the benefits of participating in a Boys and Girls Club at a young age.

“I highly recommend it coming from someone who actually participated as a youth, next to someone else who also did the same thing,” Garcia-Sanchez said. “I think it’s really important how things can change and how somebody can feel really connected to themselves and to others at their own age in a very positive environment.”

DeKalb, during a dedication ceremony held Sunday, May 19. Musil, 35, a mother of three and veteran, was killed in the line of duty after a car crash March 28, 2024. She died from her injuries in the early morning hours March 29.

First responders memorial honors Christina Musil

DeKALB – Area first responders gathered at the border where DeKalb and Sycamore meet Sunday, May 19, to help unveil a memorial plaque for the late DeKalb County Sheriff’s Deputy Christina Musil, part of a new memorial honoring local first responders.

The dedication ceremony helped close out National Police Week, a time meant to honor and bring awareness to the sacrifices made by police, firefighters, telecommunicators, paramedics and more.

Organizers said the memorial was made possible by the Pappas and Weaver families. DeKalb County Sheriff Andy Sullivan gave thanks to the families’ generosity as he spoke of Musil, 35, killed while on duty after her patrol car was rear-ended in Waterman March 28. A DeKalb man was arrested and charged with DUI and reckless homicide in the crash.

“As a patrol deputy and throughout

her entire career, she demonstrated honor, integrity and bravery,” Sullivan said. “Christina loved to make a difference in this world and she tragically died while serving and protecting our community. She has had so many accomplishments in her life, but the greatest accomplishment of all was being a mother to her children.”

Musil’s plaque was unveiled alongside two new flagpoles that bear flags honoring all who work in police and fire agencies. The new first responders memorial sits outside Isaac Executives Suites, 2675 Sycamore Road, owned by DeKalb-based developer Pappas Development.

A mother of three, Musil served as a military police officer in the U.S. Army for four years, including a deployment to Afghanistan from 2008 to 2009. She began her career with the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office in 2019 as a correctional deputy at the DeKalb County Jail for three years, then moved to the patrol division in 2022.

Sullivan said the new memorial should remind first responders – dozens of whom were in attendance – that their work does not go unnoticed.

In 2023, there were 138 officers killed in the line of duty. So far in 2024, 59 officers have been killed in the line of duty, including four from Illinois, Sullivan said.

Dozens gathered at the corner of Sycamore Road and Oakland Drive to mark the event.

Mike Embrey of DeKalb, a U.S. Air Force veteran and event organizer, said organizers chose that corner because the area covers both DeKalb and, across the street, Sycamore. He said the idea for the memorial came about two years ago when the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon-cutting for Isaac Executive Suites’ opening. He said the location felt special.

Embrey said he worked with John and Foti Pappas and Tom and Todd Weaver to expedite the project when Musil was killed in March so people would have a space to come and remember loved ones.

“This corner will forever be known as First Responders Corner. What a blessing for our city, what a blessing for our county, and every time a car drives up and down, they will remem-

ber our firemen, our policemen and all our first responders,” Embrey said. “And this is a reminder that this is what it’s all about, giving back, caring for those people.”

Multiple local leaders also were present, including DeKalb Mayor Cohen Barnes, DeKalb County Administrator Brian Gregory, DeKalb 6th Ward Alderman Mike Verbic and DeKalb County Sheriff Andy Sullivan. First responders clad in their uniforms were joined by their families.

Retired firefighter Ron Lofton performed the national anthem. Police and fire flags were hoisted by scouts from DeKalb Scout Troop The Rev. Stephen Persson led the crowd in a prayer for first responders. And DeKalb firefighter Tom Conley performed “Amazing Grace” on the bagpipes.

Sullivan announced that Musil’s badge No. 42 will be permanently and honorably retired from the sheriff’s office as of Sunday. It will not be issued to anyone again.

“Tragedies such as these remind of of the dedication, courage and heroism of those who choose to serve in this profession. It gives all of us time to reflect on the fact that the supreme sacrifice of giving our lives to serve the public is always a possibility,” Sullivan said. “Heroes are not defined by fame or fortune, but by their general desire to make a difference. And all of you here today make that difference and I thank you for your service.”

1924 – 100 YEARS AGO

John G. Davy this week move to his apartment building in East Lincoln Highway, where he will live until his new home on South Fourth street is completed. Mr. Davy’s new home has not yet been started, but he expects to see the contractors there within a few days. P. E. Mason, an official of the piano company, recently purchased the Davy home in the addition, but has been living at the hotel until he could secure possession. Today Mr. Mason’s household effects were brought here from Hinsdale.

Announcement is made today that an unusually fine program has been arranged to be given at Cortland tomorrow in honor of the soldier dead of all wars. During the morning, beginning at nine o’clock, the school children will march to the cemetery where the graves will be decorated and suitable exercises given.

Although it is reported that several of the men have given up the work, for various reasons, the steel laying crews of the North Western Tuesday moved its headquarters to Malta, where the crossover orders are now effective. The work is moving along rapidly and it will not be long before the crew will be working back towards DeKalb, replacing the steel on the west-bound right of way.

One of the large plate glass windows at the Westlake store on South First Street was broken yesterday afternoon when an auto passing on that thoroughfare flicked a stone through the pane. The stone struck near the top of the window and caused it to be badly broken and cracked. The insurance man got busy at once, and another window was expected here sometime today.

W. W. Cooper, furniture dealer and undertaker of Genoa, was seriously injured yesterday afternoon when the car he was driving was struck by a train of the Chicago Milwaukee and St. Paul railroad carrying officials of the road at a crossing east of Henrietta. It is not known how the accident happened as Mr. Cooper was driving alone at the time of the accident and the crossing is one where a clear view in both directions is obtainable.

DeKalb is to have another beauty shop which is to be opened on Thursday in the Third street barber shop conducted by J. M. Pyfer. Mrs. Ethel Dolan has been secured as operator of the new department and Mr. Pyfer believes he has an establishment ready to take care of any of the beauty work the women of today demand.

1949– 75 YEARS AGO

The Egyptian Theatre will open in a blaze of glory Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The theatre has been completely redecorated and modernized from sidewalk to screen. The theatre will feature an all new stainless-steel front, glass doors and a new marquee. The lobby has been completely redesigned and modernized with special hand decorated murals and concealed lighting.

Mrs. Kenneth Hetchler, formerly Doris Hudson was honored last evening at a post-nuptial bridal shower in the home of Mrs. Norman Kaisted. When Mrs. Hetchler

arrived, she was presented a lovely corsage of yellow carnations mixed with sweet peas.

Speeding and reckless driving through Sycamore Community Park must stop, members of the Park Board have decided, and a final warning was issued today to halt such practices. New signs giving speed limits and directions have been posted and the practice of certain drivers of ignoring speed limits and other directional signs will be curbed. Park attendants have been instructed to issue arrest tickets to all drivers violating the posted speed limits. Softball players have been warned, also, to stay on the roadways and not to drive across the playing fields.

The Agriculture Department, which has been worrying ever since 1907 about the possibility of running horseless carriages on corncobs, now has a new system to make ‘em purr on the lowest grades of gasoline. When the engine begins to heat and go bong on the hills, just squirt a little alcohol into the carburetor. This makes the cheap gas perform like the premium stuff and also used up some alcohol, of which we have too much.

Spring housecleaning activities have been completed at the DeKalb fire station with the firemen having been busy brightening up the station the past few weeks. Walls have been washed and several painting projects have been accomplished. The large room housing the trucks has been redecorated and presents a most attractive appearance. The trucks have been checked over completely and all of the hose testing activities have been completed.

1974 – 50 YEARS AGO

DeKalb added its second major development within a two-month span Monday night. The City Council unanimously approved an annexation agreement with the 165-acre Gateway project along Sycamore Road. Some spirited debate preceded adoption. Initial construction on

the estimated $20 million proposal is slated to begin October 1. Local developer George Straton has been reluctant to name any businesses interested in the site between DeKalb AgResearch and Montgomery Wards.

Despite the absence of large bulk storage tanks within DeKalb’s city limits, the problem of a chemical spill, such as the recent incident on Chicago’s south side, does confront the fire department. Fire Chief Rich Ulrich said there is a possibility dangerous chemicals stored in the metropolitan area may pass through DeKalb on either railroad cars or trucks. Faced with frequent train derailments just outside the city, Ulrich said the firemen must be capable of handling transport fires involving hazardous cargoes.

A DeKalb woman fell victim to a confidence game artist yesterday when she gave $4,500 of her savings to a man describing himself as a bank examiner. The woman told police she received a phone call warning her of suspected bank employe embezzling of money from her account.

It’s business as usual at WLBK AM 1360, at least for now. WLBK along with its sister station, WDEK FM 92.5, were purchased by Big City Radio Inc. for $4.5 million from DeKalb Radio Studios, Inc. in February. The former WDEK is now a relay for KISS FM, a radio station with a top 40 format based in Arlington Heights, Ill. WLBK, however, is up for sale and has been almost since the first day it was purchased by the Hawthorne, N. Y. company.

A rubber reprocessing plant whose operations caused quite a stink in Genoa may finally be filtering out its complaints. Humane Manufacturing began installing air filtration and deodorizing equipment inside its 538 S. Sycamore facility Friday in an effort to remove airborne particles which may be causing irritating odors in nearby residences.

RANDALL GLENN JOHNSON

Born: September 4, 1949 in Belvidere

Died: May 20, 2024 in DeKalb, IL

Randall Johnson, 74, of DeKalb, Ill., passed away peacefully Monday, May 20, 2024, at home. Born Sept. 4, 1949, in Belvidere, the son of Glenn & Nova (Hegberg) Johnson.

Randy graduated from Alden-Hebron High School, class of 1967. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany in 1971.

Randy liked to spend his free time in contemplation, meditation, reading (mostly non-fiction), bowling, playing the Lottery, and having dinner with friends and family.

Randy lived in Chicago most of his life and worked as an accountant there. He expressed his love of Chicago by taking his friends and family on walking tours of downtown. He would find the best unknown restaurants, art galleries, and parks throughout the city. What we will remember most is his love of

CHARLENE ROACH

Born: March 16, 1933 in Rochelle, IL

Died: May 18, 2024 in Kirkland, IL

Charlene M. Roach, 91, of Kirkland, Ill., died Saturday, May 18, 2024, at her home of 67 years, surrounded by her family.

Born March 16, 1933, in Rochelle, the daughter of Chester and Marie (Brown) Hedtke. Charlene married her high school sweetheart, Raymond Alfred Roach, on Oct. 24, 1949. She suffered the loss of Raymond two years ago after 72 years of marriage.

Charlene loved to play cards, go to bingo & the casino, and scratch lottery tickets. She earned the nickname Lucky, winning bids on lousy hands while playing cards with her family. Her favorite place was at the lake house, putting together puzzles, soaking in the sun, and enjoying pontoon boat rides while drinking her Miller Lite. When she wasn’t up north, she could often be found in the KFR enjoying a meal with family or friends. Charlene was an avid Cub fan, whether winning or losing. She also loved watching the Game Show Network, morning, noon, and night! In the

family, generous heart, optimism and homemade mac & cheese.

Randy is survived by his siblings, Richard (Phyllis) Johnson of Newark, Keith Johnson of Charlotte NC, Kristi Johnson of DeKalb, Jana (Randy) Haeffner of Chandler AZ, Brad (Melanie) Johnson (Germany); sister in-laws, Kathy Johnson of Rochelle and Phyllis Johnson of Genoa; his many nieces, nephews and their families, as well as many wonderful close friends.

Randy is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Doug Johnson, Larry Johnson and Ross Johnson.

The family is honoring his wishes for no funeral service. However, to honor Randy’s life, his family asked that you enjoy taking a walk in nature, share old stories with friends or family, enjoy a margarita or observe a moment of silence and meditation.

Randy didn’t like to say goodbye. Instead he would say “Be happy, be healthy or to be continued...”
