50.
A Message from the President, Dr. Laurie Borowicz Kishwaukee College is celebrating its 50th year and I am honored to contribute to our rich history. There have been remarkable changes over the past half-century, but the pride and passion for our students, community, and College have been ongoing since we opened our doors in 1968.
At Kish we have to embrace change, as it is the way of the future. Over the three years I have been President, we have worked to adapt to the ever-shifting educational landscape. Technology continues to dramatically impact the future of higher education and Kish is keeping up. Recently, Kish was approved to offer entirely online Associate Degrees.
The first 50 years of Kish have been groundbreaking. From humble farm field beginnings to state-of-the-art facilities; a couple dozen programs to over 70 degrees and certificates offered; 608 students to thousands, we have come a long way. I look forward to our future and what it may hold.
Additionally, ease of achieving credentials or a degree is important to our constituents so we are examining time-to-degree. We are streamlining our programs and offering the most essential courses, developing certificate and short-term training programs that reflect the needs of the community, and continuing to research and develop this area of higher education at Kish. Lastly, a new mission and vision statement for the College will be rolled out soon, carrying us through the next 5 years. This new message will reflect the needs of our educators, staff, students, community, and College.
It is nearly impossible to predict the future. The Byro family may never have imagined their farm land being selected as the home of Kishwaukee College in 1968, just as we never imagined a two-year Illinois statebudget impasse in 2015. Because we know the future is unpredictable, it is important for us to focus on the things we can control to guarantee a bright future for all of our learners. Many factors contribute to success as an institution, but we measure our success in terms of quality. Increasing graduation rates and student satisfaction, for example, show the quality of education at Kish is improving each year. We are working to ensure consistent quality, even in turbulent times.
My job as President is to take care of what I have been given – an opportunity to lead a great College with a strong legacy. The future may be uncertain, but I am certain Kish will still be standing for many, many generations of students to come. We hope you will join us during our Homecoming anniversary event this year as we celebrate 50 years of pride, passion, and purpose.

KISH
Athletics Today Kishwaukee Athletics Program has a longstanding history of victories and championships. With six National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national championships and multiple Arrowhead Conference championships under their belt, the Athletics program isn’t at a loss for success. But when asking current Athletic Director, Scott Kawall, what are some of the accomplishments he is most proud of, the answer may surprise you: the non-court/field victories. According to Kawall, Kish athletes are stronger academically than in years past. From 2017 to 2018, athletes have tripled their academic accomplishments in terms of national recognition. A total of 27 student-athletes were recognized for their outstanding achievements in the classroom during the 2017-2018 season with NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete Awards and Arrowhead Conference AllAcademic Excellence Awards. The NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete Award recipients are required to compete in at least one sport while completing 24 or more credit hours and earn a GPA of 3.6 or above during an academic year. The Arrowhead Conference All-Academic Excellence Award recipients are required to compete in at least one sport while maintaining full time status in both fall and spring semesters and earn a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above. “The competitive nature and hard work that the teams and coaches are putting in the classroom and on the field/court have helped reshape Kishwaukee Athletics while building upon our winning tradition,” Kawall said. Additionally, in building upon Kish tradition, Athletics has continued its commitment to serving the community and is recruiting more local talent than ever before. Indistrict athletes numbered 29% in the 2016-2017 school year; 43% in the 2017-2018 year; and by Kawalls’s estimate, they’ll make up around 60% of the athletic teams in the 2018-2019 school year. Not only are Kish athletes homegrown, but they are committed to giving back to their community. Many athletic teams participated in charitable, volunteer, and philanthropic endeavors this past year. For example, Women’s Basketball hosted a Pink Zone game in Spring 2018; silent auction and raffle funds were raised in support of breast cancer research and to honor of one of the player’s mothers, who is a breast cancer survivor. Community outreach did not end there, as the athletic program held several successful summer camps for various sports and age groups this summer. “We will continue to develop these opportunities for student-athletes in our community from kindergarten to high school,” said Kawall. Developing opportunities for athletes is just what Kish Athletics has been excelling in over the past year. From 2017 to 2018, the number of sports available for participation has increased from three to nine. The most recent additions include Men’s and Women’s Soccer and Men’s and Women’s Cross Country. “It’s very significant to bring back two men’s sports [Soccer and Cross Country], which haven’t been here for quite some time, and also having two inaugural seasons for Women’s Cross Country, and Women’s Soccer,” Kawall said, noting the hard work everyone has contributed to ensure the teams are, “a force to be

Six new coaches have been hired to coach Kish Athletic teams during the 2018-2019 season. Starting with a fresh program, is new Head Men’s Soccer Coach, Brenton Joseph. Joseph said, “We can’t forget our history, but this is also a new chapter in Kish soccer. We need to forge our own path.” A similar sentiment was shared by new Head Men’s Basketball Coach, Jay Moore, who was the Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach the past two years. “There is a solid framework to build on at Kish,” he said. “I want to continue the tradition and emphasize the concepts of playing for the team first and then yourself. Being selfless is important in team ball.” Kish also welcomes new Head Cross Country Coach, Richard Collins; Assistant Cross Country Coach, Missy Gillis; Head

reckoned with in the region.” He continued, “I am eager to watch them compete this Fall and know they will make the College, community, and their families proud.”
Women’s Softball Coach, Tara Gregait; Head Men’s Baseball Coach, Mark Hernandez; and Head Women’s Soccer Coach, Zac Ludwig. Ludwig poignantly said, “I’m never just teaching soccer, but helping young adults grow up and be prepared for the rest of their lives.” The human connection is what keeps the Athletic Program’s heart beating. Kawall noted that the best part of his job as Athletic Director is, “learning students’ goals for their degrees and playing careers and working closely with Kishwaukee staff, faculty, and coaches to assist them in achieving those goals.” He continued to explain how he enjoys, “seeing them establish friendships and connections with teammates that will last well beyond their college playing days.” Kish’s Athletic Program has a strong history to live up to, but is paving a new path as the Program expands. There’s more passion than ever before about developing winners on and off the court and field -- and that is something to be very proud about.

Kishwaukee College
CELEBRATES 50 Years By: Stephen Haberkorn Nestled among the corn fields in rural Malta, Illinois sits a golden treasure: Kishwaukee College. Celebrating their 50th Anniversary this year, they have grown through six construction phases and graduated over 24,000 students over their half-century of existence.
want to re-career. They may want to learn a new skill. They may want to continue to have an opportunity to get education throughout their lifespan. And Kishwaukee College will be there, that is what a community college provides.”
But while the physical space of the College has changed over the years, their mission has not changed: to serve their local communities by providing affordable, quality education while being responsive to the business community’s workforce needs.
Community colleges have expanded in scope and size over the years as many more people have sought higher education. Those in the workforce understand that in order to get a better job or move up to a higher level in their organization, education is their ticket. A college education can be a key to a successful career and life.
“It is really important that we have educational opportunities available locally to serve people who are interested in learning. At Kishwaukee College opportunities exist for students while they are still in high school and want to get a jump start on college, all the way through life-long learning through community education,” said Dr. Laurie Borowicz, Kishwaukee College President. “People may
“All of the research, everything we still see, demonstrates the value of a college education and why it’s still worth getting,” said Borowicz. While costs of higher education have gone up rapidly due to decreasing government support, the Board of Kishwaukee College

“We are always very mindful of the fact that we need to be good stewards of the students’ tuition dollars, as well as the taxpayers’ dollars,” said Borowicz. “Community colleges do things very efficiently and effectively. And in order to do that, especially in economic times like we’re facing, you have to be innovative and creative. Sometimes out of a challenge can come improvement.” Maintaining strong relationships with the local business community is crucial for Kishwaukee College. The Career and Technology Education (CTE) programs are required by the Illinois Community College Board to have advisory committees that advise them on things like curriculum and how technology is changing in their industries. Advisory committee meetings are held once a semester, with the business leaders coming in and sharing with the College what is going on in their field. One of Kishwaukee College’s biggest partners is Northern Illinois University. There are students who go between the two institutions through dual enrollment. Seventy percent of Kishwaukee College’s students who intend to transfer for a bachelor’s degree go to NIU. “Kishwaukee College benefits from having a university six miles down the road from us,” said Borowicz. “Because NIU is here,

has tried to be fiscally responsible to make sure that they are still offering an affordable education. The Kishwaukee College Foundation also works hard to make more money available to students through increased scholarship opportunities.

our transfer program is very big.” There are also a large number of NIU alumni who work at Kishwaukee College. Many of the programs at Kishwaukee College are well-known in the area and extremely well-respected. The healthcare programs, for instance, have a great reputation. Dr. Borowicz pointed out that she’s had people in the community tell her that when they have been in the hospital they know when it is a Kishwaukee College-trained nurse who’s helping them. “Our programs have a reputation for high quality instruction, with graduates being well trained in their field,” said Borowicz. Kish is also known for their small class size and how much they support their students and help them be successful in their careers. One of the most rewarding aspects of leading Kishwaukee College for Borowicz is traveling to local communities and hearing people’s stories about how they or someone in their family went to Kishwaukee College and how they really feel
like Kish helped them get their start. In fact, many leaders in the local business community have a strong affinity for Kishwaukee College and still maintain a close relationship with the school. Bill Lloyd, Owner of Lloyd Landscaping and Garden Center in Genoa recalls not knowing what he wanted to do for his career, even after attending another college. Then he went to Kish and enrolled in the horticulture program. “[It] helped me get to where I am today,” said Lloyd. Lloyd said he learned the most from his handson experience in the program. He currently has a second-year Kishwaukee horticulture student working for him, who has impressed him with her knowledge. Jesus Romero, Owner of Taxco Restaurant in Sycamore, took ESL classes and completed his G.E.D. at Kishwaukee College. Annually, Romero expresses his gratitude toward the College for being there for him by donating fifty percent of the money raised from the Sycamore Cinco de Mayo event to the Kishwaukee College
Foundation for Hispanic scholarships. He also sits on the Foundation Board. Tim Carlson, Principal of Sycamore High School, is a 1982 graduate of Kishwaukee College and encourages students to take advantage of the affordable education Kish offers on the way to completing the requirements for a bachelor’s degree. These are just a small sample of those in the area who are grateful for the opportunities afforded to them by Kishwaukee College. To hear more testimonials from community leaders and alumni, visit kish.edu/50th Finally, Bob Boey, Owner of the Sycamore Industrial Park and former Kishwaukee College Board Member, explained how valuable he considers Kishwaukee College is to the local community in a video posted on the College’s YouTube channel: “I consider this a treasure in our area,” said Boey, “so I hope we never lose it.”
