Welcome to NIU Welcome, NIU Huskies! Fall is always an exciting time at NIU. Meeting new students and welcoming back our returning students are my favorite things about kicking off a new academic year. Fall 2020 presents us with new opportunities and challenges for which NIU’s faculty and staff have worked diligently to create an outstanding and inclusive learning experience for you. Whether your class schedule is online, in-person or a combination, your professors are committed to supporting you and your academic success. Every decision made in our planning for this semester put your health and well-being first and foremost in our minds. We appreciate that every Huskie will help make it their responsibility to “protect the pack.” This semester will be one you will be talking about for years to come. We hope the stories you will tell won’t just be about wearing masks and washing your hands every 20 minutes. We want you to be able to tell stories about the friends you made, the things you learned and the faculty and staff who took special care to ensure that you had a good experience at NIU. Every member of the NIU faculty and staff is dedicated to helping make this happen. We know your NIU experience isn’t just about your classes. We want you to have some fun, too! We are grateful to our DeKalb County partners who have been busy preparing to welcome you to their restaurants, shops and attractions. They are following mandatory public health guidelines for your protection, and we know that you will do the same to help ensure your health and protect other members of the community. Best wishes to you for a fun, productive and healthy school year! Lisa C. Freeman, D.V.M., Ph.D. President Northern Illinois University
Welcome to DeKalb Hey, it’s great to have you in DeKalb! 2020 marks the 125th Anniversary of the opening of Northern Illinois and while its name has changed a few times during the past century, the City of DeKalb and NIU have really grown up together. Here in DeKalb, we do so much side-by-side, whether that be learning from our diversity – working together on community cleanup projects, or celebrating a Huskie athletic event. We’ve learned, we’ve laughed, we’ve cried, and through it all we’ve experienced what a great thing it is to live in a college town. This year, we’ll all begin by wearing a mask together, social distancing together, and wondering just when COVID19 will be on the way out of our lives. Let’s move on, because we’re all in this together! Forward, together, forward! On behalf of the residents of the City of DeKalb, a warm welcome! We’re delighted to have you as part of our community, and look forward to pitching in together to make the 2020-’21 school year a memorable one for all. Go Huskies! Paratransit Services: The City of DeKalb provides transportation services required under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). These services are funded by the State of Illinois, the Federal Transit Administration, Northern Illinois University, the Voluntary Action Center of Northern Illinois, the City of Sycamore, and Kishwaukee College. Students must be certified to use the paratransit service. To be certified, please contact the City’s paratransit service provider, the Voluntary Action Center, at 815748-6641 to request an application. For additional information, please visit: https:// www.cityofdekalb.com/1259/Paratransit
Huskie Line is committed to Protecting the Pack. Please see the following guidlines as related to social distancing and safety on the bus: • All public transit vehicles are thoroughly cleaned at least twice per day. This includes disinfecting commonly touched surfaces throughout the entire vehicle for the safety of the passengers and the bus operator. • All passengers capable of doing so must enter and exit through the rear door of the bus. Individuals using mobility devices, boarding with strollers, or have small children can request the use of the front door. • All passengers riding the DeKalb Public Transit System are required to wear a face covering. A face covering is considered as a commercial or homemade mask, bandana, or a scarf which covers from above the nose down to the lower part of the face at or below the chin. • At this time, all fixed routes are limited to a maximum of 10 - 12 people on board a bus at any one time. This helps ensure social distancing occurs between passengers. This number may increase with guidance from the Center for Disease Control and the State of Illinois. • All routes, with the exception of the Route 12 to the Elburn Metra Station, are fare free at this time. Fare collection is anticipated to return in the near future. All NIU students, faculty, and staff can ride any fixed route for free with a valid NIU OneCard. The Route 12 to Elburn requires all passengers to purchase a ticket from www.niutickets.com. • We ask that all passengers do their part by maintaining a safe distance when traveling on the bus, washing their hands, covering their mouth when they cough, and staying home when sick.

DeKalb County UNITES stands for: University and Neighbors Investing Together for Economic Success. Here in DeKalb County, Illinois, coming together to help our neighbors is something we have always done. Small businesses are the heart of our local economy, employing most of our family members, friends, and neighbors. They are our gathering places for celebrations, product, and service providers to keep our businesses and homes operating and go-to donors for local events. In many ways, they are the glue that holds our community together. Today, they are struggling to stay afloat. They need our help now.
How you can help 1. Mask Up to make sure they can keep the lights on. 2. Eat from local restaurants using carry-out, curbside pickup, delivery, and drive-thru options. 3. Buy gift cards for local services. 4. Shop local, small businesses online.

NIU ARTISTS. NEVER. QUIT. We are so glad you are here. It’s an extraordinary start to the year, but we are no ordinary group of Huskies. We are more than up to this task.
The arts are an incredibly important part of the college experience, and we fully intend to provide ways--some old, some new--for you to have every bit of that experience. Our artists in the College of Visual and Performing Arts never stopped creating, and we can’t wait to show you what we’ve been up to. Join us at:
