Genoa Park District’s Improvements and New Additions to Park System
By: Kelley White
Park Districts are the heart of recreation in any community and with Genoa’s recent and planned improvements in the department and throughout the area, new and exciting things are on the horizon for the residents of Genoa and beyond.
“The park district serves the recreational needs for surrounding communities,” says Executive Director of Genoa Park District Paul Bafia. “We offer open park space for all the residents, and we not only serve Genoa, we also serve small communities around like Kingston and Kirkland. We offer different facilities for recreation such as an outdoor swimming pool, fitness center, ball fields and walking paths, which are used quite often.”
Newer features to the parks departments include two pickleball courts which opened earlier in 2023. A brand-new water slide will open in the summer of 2024. “We had tennis courts prior to the renovation, but pickleball has really taken off in the past five years, so we wanted to meet demand.”
Pickleball is a great sport for many residents, especially for seniors. “It’s a good activity for seniors because it is a smaller court and it involves a lot less impact on their joints,” says Bafia. “A lot of different ages love to play it, but it’s definitely popular among the senior population. In the first three months we were open, there were ages five all the way through seniors playing it, so, it’s a good family activity.
Last year, the parks department applied for a grant to purchase an additional ten acres of land adjacent to Chamberlain Park. “10 years ago, we were able to purchase 13 acres to expand the park,” says Bafia. “And we approached the same owners a couple years ago and told them we were applying for a grant to help with the purchase and they agreed to sell another 10 acres to us.” After closing the grant with the state, construction and improvements will begin shortly to expand the park.
“The process of accumulating, and building upon, new land for the parks department can be quite lengthy. We do the design work, apply for the grants and wait over 6 months to find out if we have received approval.”
Says Bafia.
The importance of park districts in towns like Genoa is immeasurable. They
provide recreational opportunities and help foster generational memories. “We provide all kinds of different programming,” says Bafia. “We do a lot of childcare programs. For working parents, we have after school programs so they can put the child in a safe and fun program for kids, and we run that program until about six o’clock since a lot of parents work until about five. We also offer preschool programs that run during the day, three days a week, for three and four-year-olds, and then we run an all-day summer camp.”
The park district also operates a 14,000 square foot fitness center offering several physical fitness programs for community members. While parents are working out, they can take advantage of the fitness center’s Kid Zone, which offers activities and supervision for children and their babysitting service as well. Like many park districts across the state of Illinois, Genoa facilitates soccer, basketball, volleyball and tee-ball programs and opens an outdoor swimming pool in the summer months.
“Our pool was so busy this summer,” says Bafia. “that the number of season passes that we sold and the daily admissions increased 30% due to the overflow from the Sycamore and Belvidere pools being closed.”
As Executive Director, Bafia helps oversee daily operations and keeps the department running smoothly, especially in the face of their new improvements. “I’ve been here for 22 years,” he says. “Among other things, I oversee the bigger grants from the state of Illinois and write some of the grants. We’ve received almost $2.2 million since I started, so that’s a big part of my responsibilities.
Overall, the park district enriches the Genoa community with their unique, practical and exciting new programs. “When they do surveys to parents about what the number one reason is why they move, or why they moved to a particular city or town, schools is number one,” says Bafia. “But parks and open spaces are number two. It’s very important to have for any community, but especially with a smaller town. We may not be able to offer some of the facilities that a larger town would but, for a town of 6,000 people, I’m impressed with what our facilities offer our community with our budget. These purchases provide people opportunities to stay physically fit with the fitness center, and spend time with their families at the swimming pool and in our open spaces. The Parks and Recreation department play a very important role in people’s lives for the area that they live in.”
Genoa Facade Program
Evolving and continuous improvement are essential aspects to the success of small-town commerce and Genoa’s Façade program has already seen a marked improvement in the downtown area for the few short years it has been active in the community.
“About 30 years ago, the city was given funds from the State of Illinois – the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity – to put towards a community development assistance program,” says City Administrator Alyssa Seguss. “For years and years, the city had issued low interest loans to new and expanding businesses and had funds to continue to do that.”
In the early days of 2019, Genoa’s City Council began to work through what they could do with the growing commerce fund balance and how to put it back into the community. As a historic small town, Genoa had several buildings in the downtown area that were in need of updating to preserve the spirit and community growth. “That’s where the Façade Grant Program was created. The Façade Grant Program uses those initial grant funds from long ago and the interest that’s accumulated over the past couple of decades.”
The Façade Grant Program allowed business owners to improve their buildings in partnership with the city of Genoa, fostering close relationships within the community and

continuing to preserve older buildings in the downtown district. The process was relatively straight forward and made to be as simple as possible for both business owner and the city council.
Eligibility rules and regulations were also straight-forward and allow for an encouraging level of creativity for business owners. “There’s a fifty percent reimbursement grant up to $15,000 per side of the building that faces a downtown street,” says Seguss. “Essentially it enhances the exterior of the building as it’s viewable from the street.”
“Everyone has really been creative with it and they really have their own individual ideas, color schemes and styles to go with what they want the façade to look like,” says Seguss. They are taking into consideration the buildings around them and what colors they are or what façade would best fit downtown. It’s been interesting seeing the downtown be enhanced.” Genoa, like many small towns, has its own charm, spirit and unique history residents want to see celebrated and preserved. Through this grant program, the possibilities are exciting to watch come to fruition, improving the face of the town. “In a downtown that’s historic like Genoa’s, there are a lot of buildings that are getting older, downtowns in general are struggling, so I think now is the time to put some love and care into the buildings in our downtown, make sure
they’re occupied and, ultimately, if we all work on this together, it’s really a public/private partnership in improving the downtown, continuing to try and attract new businesses to the downtown, fill vacancies and provide services to the residents. Overall, the façade grant program has encouraged over $875,000 in investment to downtown buildings with about $405,000 coming from matching funds from the city. We are continuing to make Genoa an amazing place to live and raise a family.

Pete’s Castle Get the
By: Kelley White
Housed in a historical depot in Genoa, Pete’s Castle Marathon & Get the Scoop Ice Cream Shoppe has become a beloved fixture in a town that is a treasured part of her family history for founding family member Cori Cork.
When the business was Pete’s Fuel Depot, community members would flock there for containers of the precious resource. The propane business started in 1945 selling bottled gas and, in 1949, they built a propane plant on Mill Street. Aside from propane, the company provided milk coolers, heating stoves, household appliances, fertilizer and more.
In 1962, they owned an oil and gasoline plant in Marengo – later transplanted to Mill Street in Hampshire. In 1974, they bought property on the southern side of the town, and it became one of the first general convenience stores locally. Les Peterson and his wife Phyllis eventually purchased a closed down service station and renovated it, creating Pete’s Castle. Get the Scoop now occupies the same space in the business where they originally offered a deli.
& Castle Marathon the Scoop Ice Cream Shoppe
Les’s daughter Cori now helps run the business selling Marathon Fuel and delicious ice cream, among other wares and treasures. Cori and her family are integral parts of the sprawling family business, including Burlington Oasis & Pete’s Castle.
Genoa was the perfect choice to place a unique general store like Pete’s. “My Grandma Petersen also knew a lot of people in Genoa since she went to school all but her senior year of High School in Genoa and we also have many relatives here, so it seemed like a perfect fit,” says Cori Cork. “Genoa is family. Whether you attend any one of the great festivals, car shows, homecomings, etcetera, you will see someone you know and love. Our customers are truly our family. When my youngest was little and hanging out because I needed to work, I had a beloved customer lend her his library card. She came back with a book about World War II and we all congratulated her on her choice and giggled. We still bring that up now that she is scooping ice cream for everyone.”
Children of customers have been some of their most valued employees over the years and Pete’s has been a generational staple for the community. “Once I start to tell some of my stories, people usually laugh and tell me I should write a book of all the crazy, fun things that happen,” says Cork. “I have no intention of doing that, I would rather enjoy my customers & family.”
Genoa has been a blessing for Cork and her family’s legacy in the region, especially as a cherished business. “We have been active in several organizations in Genoa over the years on Main Street, The Genoa Chamber of Commerce, Kishwaukee Valley Historical Society, etcetera,” says Cork. “Genoa has a
lot to offer for a small town [like] several wonderful places to eat, an amazing hardware store, an award winning winery, our beautiful Butera, banks, doctors, dentists, chiropractors, physical therapy, hairdressers, a Chevy dealer, automotive repair, factories, great parks and a pool – especially since a favorite thing for so many to do after swimming is stopping for ice cream. Here in Genoa, we really do have what a family needs and Genoa is close to other bigger cities for the extras. All of these things make Genoa a great place to be in business, because Genoa is good for families.”
In store, Pete’s carries several different products aside from their Marathon Gas and ice cream. “We are a branded Marathon Gas station, and we carry diesel fuel, also,” says Cork. “In one sense, we look like a typical convenience store from the outside. Once you walk in, you see that we are an ice cream store that also sells fuel. We are a full-service ice cream scoop shop. Along with that we sell gifts, toys, stuffed animals and all kinds of unusual candy.” This year, Pete’s is excited to start carrying new products like socks, new candy, toys, gifts and, most of all, new ice cream flavors Cork is ecstatic to share with customers soon.
Overall, Pete’s Castle Marathon & Get the Scoop Ice Cream Shoppe hopes to continue to cement their much-loved corner of the community and provide for their dear customers in any way they can. “Marathon is an American owned fuel brand with a great rewards program that we would love for more people to take advantage of,” says Cork. “We would love the chance to be [Genoa’s] ‘corner store’. We are family owned and operated, so shopping with us is truly shopping local.”
Genoa School District’s
FFA is Bringing Positivity to the Community
IBy: Kelley White
n this corner of the world, national organizations like the FFA, or the Future Farmers of America, play an important role in continuing a legacy in successful agriculture. In Genoa, President of the FFA at her high school, Taylor Fry, and agricultural instructor and FFA advisor Toni Gabriel come together to ensure the ongoing presence of the FFA in the community helps bolster careers and have a positive impact.
“As a student-led organization it’s inter-curricular which is different from other groups, which are extracurricular, meaning that it should be infused into the classroom,” says Gabriel. “So, students have the opportunity to participate and engage in our FFA activities. Sometimes, they’re a part of the curriculum in the class and sometimes they’re outside of our schools’ program.”
For the FFA, community comes first. “We really value our community service and involvement with our township,” says Gabriel. “We really appreciate anybody who comes out to any of our petting zoos or events that we host. A really important upcoming event is our Dinner & Auction. That really allows our students to be able to travel to conferences like our BUILD Conference, which is a junior and senior leadership conference and our Ground Zero Conference, which allows freshmen and
sophomores to really develop those leadership qualities. Another great event is the National FFA Convention which allows our members to receive certain awards.”
Within the community, the FFA tries to put on two to three petting zoos a year as they are a very popular event in Genoa. They also participate in the Genoa harvest celebration and, in 2023, they handed off the scarecrow competition after starting the tradition in the community. One of their members even keeps blessing boxes maintained and stocked in town.
“We donate drinks to the VFW for their annual Thanksgiving community meal, which is free of charge to anyone visiting there,” adds Fry. In school, the eggs collected from their chickens get donated to the food pantry, yet another opportunity for kids in the FFA to give back to Genoa.
As an important organization in a small town, the FFA is closely tied into its improvement and maintaining positive output. “I believe that our community benefits from our FFA, especially considering with how small our town is,” says Fry. “When you’re driving into Genoa, you see all sorts of different agricultural products being grown throughout the area. And it’s really neat to see how those agricultural products are being educated to our students, in and out of the agricultural education program here. The community really benefits from us being here because it allows us to help grow leadership within our high school, as well as making sure that our members are aware of their surroundings, with the Ag around them and how it helps them out.”
Right now, the FFA in Genoa has over 100 students involved, with over 70 members having actively participated in one of their events and programs, which is a large percentage of the high school student population. “We’re definitely the largest organization at our school,” says Gabriel.
“FFA has three pillars: our premier leadership, personal growth, and career success,” says Gabriel. “We want them to be better people and better leaders. We want them to give back in their community and we want them to have career exposure. Ideally, they’re bringing those skills to any career that they choose. Hopefully it’s here in Genoa because we love to see our students involved here locally, or coming back to serve the community in a career.”
One of their more cherished events in Genoa includes egging yards, a particularly popular pastime for the students in the FFA. “Community members will fill out a form that we offer around February and they say if they would like us to go through and egg their yard, which is us going out and acting as the Easter Bunny,” says Fry. “They say whether they want candy, toys or trinkets in the eggs, and it allows us to create memories for the children within our community, all while giving back our time.”
Helping such a generous organization find success in the community is key for its continuation. “It would be great to see community members being able to support our program by donating to our Dinner & Auction or participating in our pumpkin sales,” says Fry. “Those are our two biggest fundraisers of the year and those are really what provides that financial drive to be able to allow our students to participate.”
