Mistletoe Market
RETURNS
D
By Kevin Trusty
eck the halls! December festivities will be here before you know it and the second annual Santa’s Mistletoe Market will be making its triumphant return to the Hampshire area in 2018. This will be a wonderful day full of seasonal fun that is sure to get everyone in the holiday spirit! Sponsored by the Hampshire Area Chamber of Commerce, Santa’s Mistletoe Market debuted in 2017 and greatly exceeded all expectations. The event was a huge success with over 1,000 people attending, and garnered great reviews from the community. This year’s market will be much the same, repeating the one-day event format. The event is slated for the first weekend in December. The market hopes to meet and exceed last year’s number of over 100 craft and direct sellers, with many great gifts, art, and hand-crafted items available for purchase. Food vendors will also be on hand, along with kids’ games, photos with Santa Claus, and much more. For more holiday cheer, Musical Owl, a popular music school in Hampshire, will return to provide live music and entertainment throughout the day. Complementing the craft and food vendors, there will be opportunities for businesses and organizations to set up individual displays. Each participating business will also provide a kids’ game or activity. Letters to Santa, letters to troops overseas, custom hot chocolate stands, holiday coloring and crafts were among the highlights in 2017. This year, we look forward to these, and even more creative ideas, for kids and families to enjoy. Santa’s Mistletoe Market will again take place at Hampshire Middle School, located at 560 S. State Street in Hampshire. Tickets to the 2018 Santa’s Mistletoe Market will be available at the door and are $3 for adults and $2 for children. Admission includes all games, activities, and photos with Santa. A portion of proceeds from ticket sales will be donated back to the community, with details to follow.
Further information about Santa’s Mistletoe Market, including sponsorship opportunities, can be found by visiting the Hampshire Area Chamber’s website, www.hampshirechamber.org or by calling 847-683-1122.

Burlington T
he Village of Burlington was incorporated in 1906 and is a Village with a strong sense of community. Burlington marked its beginnings with a tavern in 1840, a post office in 1846, a general store in 1847 and finally incorporated in 1906. On the growth horizon are many opportunities for Burlington. Burlington is a quaint, rural community interested in economic development and has a positive image for growth while maintaining the “smalltown” character. Home of 26 businesses and 618 residents. The Village has progressed with the alignment of Plank Rd and our first stop light, the resurfacing of Main Street, and total reconditioning of the water tower are three of the main improvements to the Village in preparation for all potential growth. Growth is imminent; the Village of Burlington is looking forward to those opportunities to expand while maintaining its “small-town’ character.

Tuscany Woods
ATTRACTS NEW RESIDENTS TO HAMPSHIRE
A
By Kevin Trusty premiere, eye-catching community is on the rise in Hampshire, attracting homebuyers with a peaceful, relaxing setting and lots of style.
Nestled away just off Route 72 near I-90, Route 20 and Route 47 sits the beautiful Tuscany Woods subdivision. A thriving community that features four different duplex floorplans in a calm, serene setting, the area is also near a multitude of dining, retail and recreation spots. The Village of Hampshire is thrilled to showcase the many attractive amenities and multiple design options families can choose from in Tuscany Woods. Each home features plenty of space and comfort without sacrificing any modern style elements. The subdivision is pleasantly designed to be as inviting as it is tranquil. It’s also a great place for kids and is located within Community Unit School District 300. The actively-selling, single family homes in this burgeoning subdivision are just a part of the dynamic, ongoing growth and development of the entire Hampshire area. Unit one is just about fully completed and has been attracting young families from all over to enjoy the spacious, stylish and relaxing atmosphere. Unit two of the subdivision is currently in the planning stages, with further development projects in the works. In addition to the great design and value of the homes themselves, residents and visitors to Tuscany Woods will be in a prime location for many family-friendly activities and attractions. Young couples and families are drawn to the area because of the subdivision’s quiet setting, and also because it is conveniently bordered by major retailers and restaurants on Route 47 and Randall Road. Outdoor enthusiasts and explorers will enjoy a key bonus feature that Tuscany Woods provides close access to the Kane County Forest Preserves, Seyller Park and the newly renovated Bruce Ream Memorial Park. These recreational locales are part of the Hampshire Park District, and offer many wonderful opportunities for leisure, exercise, entertainment and community or private gatherings.
Find additional information about building options, details on amenities, nearby schools and photos of the Tuscany Woods subdivision at www.calatlantichomes.com/find-your-new-home/5-chicago/7504-tuscany-woods.html or by calling 847-683-7052.

ewly elected trustees Christine Klein, Ryan Krajecki and Erik Robinson were sworn in at the May 4th 2017 Village of Hampshire Board meeting. They, along with veteran trustees Toby Koth, Jan Kraus and Mike Reid, Jr., have been working together alongside Village President Jeff Magnussen and the dedicated village staff to make Hampshire the best it can be.

We have worked together to refocus our energy to make Hampshire more business friendly, thanks in part to our Business Development Commission. Since committee’s inception last spring, the Village of the BDC has been busy at work laying the foundation to drive new business growth for our entire town. As we continue to focus on new and existing development opportunities throughout the village, we would like to invite you to give your opinions and preferences for future business development specific to our downtown. Our goal is to have as much feedback on what types of businesses and services you would like to see so we can work toward that goal. We want every resident and business to be proud to a part of the fabric that makes up our community and always seek input from as many people as possible for the businesses and services residents want and will support in Hampshire. This even includes those that may not live in Hampshire, but visit on a frequent basis.
History of Hampshire Originally known as Henpeck, the Village of Hampshire began when Zenas Allen of Vermont became its first settler in 1836. From 1837 to 1845 Henpeck existed along the Chicago – Galena Stagecoach Trial at Old State (Route 20), Big Timber, and Brier Hill Roads. Hampshire Township was organized in 1845, and the village’s name was changed to Hampshire. In 1876, the village relocated so that it could be along the line. Hampshire was officially incorporated that same year with Samuel Rowell as its first village president. In 1893, the farming community grew to become the second largest milk – producing and shipping station in Illinois. Residents have served in the Civil War, and during World War II, Hampshire was chosen for a prisoner of war camp for 250 German soldiers who worked at the Inderrieden Canning Company.

Petersen Fuels’
HAMPSHIRE ROOTS RUN THREE GENERATIONS DEEP
L
By Elizabeth Harmon
ifelong Hampshire resident Les Petersen’s roots run deep in the area. Born and raised here, Les is the owner of Petersen Fuels, and is proud to be one of four generations of Petersens doing business in the community. The evolution of the Petersen family’s businesses mirrors the growth and change of Hampshire itself, from farm town to a growing community, attracting new families who want access to Chicago and the booming Fox Valley suburbs, while still enjoying the fresh air, open space and friendly, small-town atmosphere. Through it all, the Petersen family has been there. Les’ great-grandfather, Fred Petersen, a German immigrant, opened a meat market in Burlington in the 1920s. Fred’s son, Fredrick Christian Petersen, moved to Hampshire and sold insurance. F.C. and his wife, Helen “May” Petersen, had a son, Maynard. Maynard enjoyed repairing radios, and after graduating from Hampshire High School, became an electrician, first for a local canning company, then for residences and farms that were first installing lights. That led to a job selling electrical pumps to farms that were moving away from hand-pumped wells. As more farms around Hampshire embraced modern technology, Maynard saw an opportunity and, in 1945, started the Petersen Propane Company. As young men returned from the war to their family farms, Petersen Propane grew at a steady pace. By the mid-1950s Maynard saw another opportunity and decided to expand into the fertilizer business. In 1955, he began supplying farmers with anhydrous ammonia 82% nitrogen fertilizer. In 1960, he added dry farm fertilizer, and in 1961, he added tank wagon delivery of refined fuels and heating oil. As the business grew, so did the Petersen family. Maynard and his wife Genevieve had two children, Les and Melanie. Les, born in 1944, inherited a love of working on cars from his father. “As a teenager, I wanted to be a junk man. I liked to buy old cars and scrap them,” he said. “We had room for this work and the necessary tools because of being in the propane business, and I was always interested in anything automotive.”

17
After he graduated from Hampshire High School in 1962, where he served as the basketball team manager, Les joined the family business full time. In 1964, the Petersens bought the Hampshire Feed Mill. “At that time, this was still very much a farming community, with lots of farms raising livestock,” Les said.
also take them to the Northern Illinois Steam Club Show every year,” he said.
In 1965, Les joined the Army, and spent 17 months in Thailand, working in communications. While in the military, he began corresponding with Phyllis Struck, a high school friend, who had returned to Hampshire after college, and was working as a teacher. The two began dating after Les returned home in 1967, and in 1968 they were married. The couple had two daughters, Cori and Christine, both of whom still live in the area with their families.
In 1973, the Petersens moved their business from a State Street building (located at what is now the First American Bank parking lot), to their current office at 148 S. State Street, which had been one of the downtown grocery stores. They remodeled and added a large showroom, where they sold household appliances. “My father had sold appliances in the past, but that business waned as he got busy with other things. I liked the business, and wanted to get back into it, not only selling appliances but also repairing them. It grew out of my love for anything mechanical,” he said.
The family enjoyed traveling together; especially spending time at the summer cottage Maynard and his father built in Door County, Wisconsin. Les was active in the community, serving the Hampshire Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter. He also joined the Northern Illinois Steam Power Club, an interest that continues today. “We’ve used one of our steam engines for the Corn Boil in Hampshire since 1983. We
Les and his father also enjoyed working on cars, and together, assembled a Ford Model T. “There are parts from at least 37 different cars in that one car. We traveled to four different states to find all the parts we needed to restore it,” he said.
In 1979, Maynard and Genevieve opened a hardware store, Petersen’s Town & Country, on the site of an old gas station at the corner of State Street and Route 72 in Hampshire. Maynard, a former electrician, did the wiring for the store, and the Petersens used the old service station’s tanks and pump island to

offer full service gas. Between the hardware store and gas station, the appliance business and the propane business, it was a busy time for the Petersen family. “I helped wherever I could to make it successful,” Les said. When Genevieve retired as the office manager, Phyllis left teaching and took over, working fulltime for the family business. In 1980 the family purchased another service station, Gustafson Oils, which was the local Mobil dealer in Hampshire. In 1986, on a family vacation with their daughters to the Grand Canyon, Les and Phyllis noticed that many gas stations had convenience stores attached, and decided to give the idea a try in Hampshire. They converted the full service gas station at the Town & Country to a convenience store, and opened the Spee-D-Mart in 1987. The store was a big hit in Hampshire. “We were open seven days a week, and Sunday was always a big day for us because the only grocery store in town was closed,” said Les. A few years later, they opened another convenience store, the Burlington Oasis, and in 1997; they added a third convenience store, Pete’s Castle, in Genoa. The stores carry nationally known fuel brands: BP in Burlington and Hampshire, Marathon in Genoa. Spee-DMart offers 24-hour pumps, lawn bags, and
along with Burlington Oasis, kerosene, pet foods, and propane cylinders among many other convenience store items. Pete’s Castle is known for its 26 flavors of ice cream, from the Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream in Madison, Wisconsin. Les’ daughter, Corrine Petersen-Cork, manages Pete’s Castle in Genoa and supervises the other two stores. In addition to the convenience stores, Petersen Fuels still owns and operates a stand-alone gas station and a 24-hour commercial fueling facility on Mill Street in Hampshire. In 2017, Les was honored by the Burlington Business Council as its Citizen of the Year. The Petersen family’s success has come from hard work, support for each other, and also from being responsive to new opportunities as the area has grown and changed. “Forty or fifty years ago, almost all the farms in the area had livestock. Now there’s little livestock in the area, and fewer small farms,” Les said. “We’re more consumer focused, but still take pride in serving the community. Our friendly, attentive employees have helped to develop a fine customer base for us. Stop in at any one of our locations and say hi!”

Folks around the area who are looking for a great place to spend some quality leisure time, have a relaxing group outing, or simply get some outdoor exercise, will welcome the new features that will enhance the longtime recreation spot. The newly renovated park promises to be a serene, engaging and enjoyable place for families, outdoor enthusiasts or even those just out for a pickup game of basketball or volleyball. The renovations to the park have been well over a year in the making and the completed efforts surely will be something to behold. Various planning stages were completed prior to the step-by-step construction and development. Work will be finished in time to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the park in 2018. Several initiatives were launched to help support the extensive renovations. During the initial planning stages, the Hampshire Park District was the proud recipient of a sizeable OSLAD (Open Space and Land Acquisition and Development) grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources in 2016. In addition, the Kane County Riverboat grant and other investments for equipment and services amounted to over $850,000 being put toward

Pingree Grove T
he Village of Pingree Grove is growing! Nestled between routes 47, 72 and 20, the Village of Pingree Grove has expanded from a quaint little hamlet of 50 homes to a bustling community of over 3,000 homes! For the past four years, we have issued an average of 295 new residential construction permits per year, and the outlook for continued growth remains high for years to come. Population estimates for cities and towns provided by the U.S. Census Bureau indicate the Village of Pingree Grove has seen a population growth of over 60% since the 2010 Census when our population was 4,532. With a current estimated population nearing 7,500, we are looking to expand our commercial and industrial base to provide jobs, needed services, and local revenue to our community. To spur this growth, the Village will be constructing a new Municipal Center at the west intersection of Reinking Rd and Highland Ave. This center will be home to the administrative offices and meeting rooms of Village Hall, the Building Department, and the Public Works Department. Plans are set to break ground in summer, 2018 with an anticipated move-in date by March, 2019. We are very excited about this new building and hope it will be a symbol of pride and accomplishment for our residents as well. With the help of many volunteers, our newly redesigned website, and other social media outlets, Pingree Grove wants the world to know we are a great place to grow a business, a family, and a community.
