Annual St. Baldrick’s fundraiser coming to Midwestern University By KELLI MURRAY kmurray@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Midwestern University students are shearing their locks in an effort to raise funds and bring awareness to pediatric cancer. Students, faculty and the public will be shaving their heads for St. Baldrick’s Foundation at 6:30 p.m. March 10, at Ballydoyle Irish Pub and Restaurant, 5157 Main St. The foundation is a volunteer-driven charity committed to funding research to find cures for childhood cancers, according to its website. Shaving heads for donations is all part of the fun, yet serious business of bringing awareness to its cause. This is the fifth year Midwestern University will be participating in the event. Last year’s event raised about $60,000, according to Chad Morreale, Midwestern University student and co-chairman of the event. “We are really proud of bringing all

CHOOSING A TOOTHPASTE

JUDI STRAUSS, E.A.

Q: How do I find the best toothpaste for me? A: Not all toothpastes are the same. Nor are all people’s needs the same. Talk with your dentist about your particular needs if you are in the process of selecting or considering switching to a new toothpaste. There are, however, a number of fundamental considerations when deciding on which toothpaste to use. The main one is that it carry the American Dental Association (ADA) Seal of Acceptance. The seal is awarded to only those products that have passed a rigorous testing procedure and have been proven effective. Another major consideration is that the toothpaste contain fluoride, which is still recognized as a key element in preventing tooth decay. You may want to pick one that has a mild abrasive that will help with the removal of plaque, the clear film that develops on teeth and is a contributing factor to decay and gum disease. The ADA also notes that toothpastes containing an ingredient called triclosan can combat gingivitis, the early stage of periodontal, or gum, disease. You may be in the market for a toothpaste that contains a whitening agent. And older people, whose gums may have begun to recede, leaving parts of sensitive roots exposed, may consider a toothpaste with a desensitizing agent that will reduce the potential discomfort of exposure to heat and/or cold. Finally, finding a toothpaste that tastes good and leaves your mouth feeling invigorated will encourage you to use it.

TAXABLE SOCIAL SECURITY

can be a problem. Since one-half of your Social Security plus all of your income (including tax-exempt income) is used on the worksheet, some or all of your Social Security may be taxable.

The cut off where 50% taxable starts is $32,000 for married filing jointly and $25,000 for Singles. For the 85% taxable, it is $44,000 MJ and $44,000 Single. These amounts have not changed since the early 1990s! And the worksheet is not simple.

If you sold a stock or mutual fund this year, got more long term capital gains from your mutual funds or took out more IRA, you may find that a lot more of your Social Security is taxable – and therefore more total tax due.The good news is that your SSA is not taxable for Illinois.

it translates well to the people that donate. It’s a very compelling reason to fundraise.” While shaving your head is not a requirement to donate or to raise money, it can up your street cred, Morreale said. “It’s fun to hit up your Facebook friends and say you are shaving your head for such a good cause, and see if they want to donate,” he said. Darien-Woodridge Local 3437 President Darren Lino said there would be five members from the firefighters union participating in the event. “Our local has participated in St. Baldrick’s for about the past five years,” at various locations, Lino wrote in an email. “Our membership takes great honor in participating in the event to help such a worthy cause.” For the five years Midwestern University has participated in the event, Ballydoyle has been a partner, and is looking forward to another successful event, according to Linda Merrifield, events coordinator for the Irish restaurant and bar. “We have partnered with them so they have a place to call home,” Merrifield said. “I think it is a very special cause that gets great attention through this event, and we love hosting it and partnering with Midwestern University. We are happy to be part of it every year.” Ballydoyle will have some food and beverage specials that night, but the main event will be the mane shaving on the stage typically reserved for bands. It makes comprehension and writing fun.” Squires said the school has run winter reading programs annually, but there was never a high participation rate, typically 15 percent to 17 percent participation, she said. That changed with the introduction of Conquest of the Realm, which saw 80 percent of the students participate. Students produced 217 catalog reviews, 63 character stories, 42 blog entries, 34 book trailers and 30 original stories, she said. “The kids would encourage each other,” Squires said. “If their house won, it was bragging rights and they

Squires plans for the other schools in the district to share $6,000 of the money, while the remaining $24,000 is pegged for O’Neill classroom libraries and digital e-books. “The more books that surround kids the better off they are,” Squires said. “And they need access to lots and lots of books.” The grand prize winner will be announced April 30.

O’Neill Middle School students work together to solve clues for the Conquest of the Realm game created by school librarian Tasha Squires. The game won $30,000 as a Follett Challenge semifinalist.

DOWNERS GROVE – A librarian’s imagination helped inspire unprecedented participation from students and earned O’Neill Middle School a $30,000 prize as a Follett Challenge semifinalist. Now, the school will have the opportunity to compete for an additional $30,000, according to Downers Grove Grade School District 58. The Follett Challenge is a national education contest that rewards the most innovative schools in the country. O’Neill librarian Tasha Squires has known about the challenge for several years, but it wasn’t until last year that she had a specific program to highlight, she said. The Conquest of the Realm game she invented earned the school semifinalist status. “Conquest of the Realm is related to gamification,” Squires said. “You take anything you want to teach the kids and turn it into a game.” Conquest of the Realm motivated students with games and competitions to voluntarily read more books, write book reviews and blog entries in order to win points for their team. Squires divided the school into two seventh-grade and two eighth-grade teams. She sent out challenges to students via email with tempting opportunities to earn points, including writing a book review or completing a word scramble. Points also were won if the students solved clues to figure out their team sword. “Basically, the students had to talk to each other to earn points,” Squires said. “They had to work together.” Teachers also were included in the program, according to eighth-grade science teacher Janette Syverson. “It got the teachers that were not language arts or reading involved and we were able to play,” Syverson said. “I volunteered to be a resource for the kids. So if a child needed to tell a teacher about a book they read, they would track me down and I would listen to a book report.” Syverson would then reward the

The Big Read starts a new chapter By KELLI MURRAY

editorial@mysuburbanlife.com DOWNERS GROVE – For the past 10 years, the libraries of Downers Grove, Woodridge, Hinsdale, La Grange, La Grange Park, Clarendon Hills, Lisle, Indian Prairie and Thomas Ford have joined forces for an annual reading event. Formerly The Big Read, it is now ReDiscover, and it offers a vast array of programming for patrons of all ages with a focus on one theme, instead of just one book, as was done in the past. Choosing a single book for a large population with varied ages, genders and genre preferences could be challenging, said Melissa Doornbos, Downers Grove Public Library public relations manager. “It is very hard to pick a book to have a wide appeal and offer a program for it,” she said. “We decided that with 10 years under our belt, it was time to do something different.” The change to one theme was a calculated decision by the library directors to broaden the scope of programming, according to Patti Naisbitt, Woodridge Public Library public relations and pro-

So we can have more categories in programs, and [patrons] can go to book discussions at their own library or another library.” This year, the focus is celebrating home. Musical performances, lectures, book discussions and cooking demos

will be available for children, teens and adults. Programs are free to patrons. Event registration opened Monday at re-discover.org. To find a listing of the eight books related to celebrating home, see the “Books” tab, which opens to a list of titles ranging from “The House of Sky” by Ivan Doig to “Howards End” by E.M. Forster. Book discussion guides are also available under the tab. Additionally, there are “For Teens” and “For Kids” tabs that have their own age-appropriate books.

Not interested in reading a book but still interested in celebrating home? The “Events by Topic” drop-down features 12 topics including cooking, movies, music, design and decor, gardening and pets. “What is exciting for me is that celebrating home can be so wide and encompassing,” Hinsdale reference librarian Jo Ann Schusterich said. “We’ve also incorporated homelessness, so people can learn about that. It is a great opportunity to information share with the community.” ReDiscover is offered just once per year to residents, but it is a year-round process for the libraries to plan. “The staff will meet after this program to see what we need to do for next year,” Schusterich said. “We do a lot of planning behind the scenes, and we are lucky we have great staff as part of the planning group. They take on responsibility for programs at their own libraries, but also for ReDiscover.”

n LAST WEEK’S WEB POLL QUESTION: Will you vote in the upcoming local elections?

63 PERCENT: Yes 29 PERCENT: No 7 PERCENT: Maybe 1 PERCENT: I don’t know

Library stimulates STEM explorers What are Snap Circuits, Little Bits, Cubelets, 3Doodler, MakeyMakey and Beebots? These interesting names belong to tools and materials that young STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) explorers can use for learning and fun at the Downers Grove Public Library. The new STEM Room in our renovated ChilCOMMUNITY dren’s Services Department VOICE is where they live. Children’s Rick library staff members, middle school volunteers and the Ashton occasional husband of a librarian guide kids, parents and teachers to the discoveries and delights contained in them. In addition to our traditional support for learning by reading, writing and listening, we are actively helping young people learn by doing, and we are learning a great deal too. This is new territory for the library. Active hands-on learning, often involving collaboration, is different from the quiet, singular focus of reading that we know so well. While the library has not been a hush-hushed place for a long time, STEM work provides an atmosphere of discovery and delight that is definitely not silent. Like educators and leaders at all levels, we know that it is important for our future. Sometimes the STEM resources leave the building. On Feb. 21, they received good use at Elementary School District 58’s day-long Students in Technology conference. Well over 100 students in grades 3 through 8 used STEM tools and materials. They built robots, learned the basics of electric circuitry and invented all manner of unique objects. In each case, the students pursued their own ideas and observations, doing what scientists and engineers do. They tried a solution, failed, analyzed their failure and tried another solution. Library staff and volunteers guided, supported and advised. Helping people learn is, after all, what the Downers Grove Public Library does best. More opportunities are on the way. During District 58’s spring break, March 30 to April 4, the library will offer daily STEM activities. One featured event will be the Hopscotch App Challenge on March 31, beginning at 1 p.m. With their iPads and the Hopscotch App at the ready, students in grades 3 and up will see their creations on the STEM Room’s big screen. Open-ended exploratory STEM opportunities also will be available each morning. Like the community we serve, the library is in the midst of a rapidly changing world. Our commitment to STEM learning is just one sign that we are changing too.

OUR VIEW

Transparency fight is renewed in Springfield Here we go again. Some lawmakers in Springfield again are taking aim at making government less transparent. Republican state Rep. Joe Sosnowski of Rockford has filed House Bill 261. If passed, it would end the publication of all public notices in newspapers in favor of government websites. The legislation states when a governmental unit is required to provide notice by publication in a newspaper by law, order of court or contract, the governmental unit may publish the notice on an official government website instead of in a newspaper. You might recall a similar assault of transparency occurred in 2011, when a similar bill was filed. It was unsuccessful. Proponents of the bill say it would save governments money. The trade off might seem sensible, but a closer look exposes the legislation for what it is: a stealthy assault on open government under the guise of saving money. Newspapers, of course, have a vested interest in this matter: The bill would take revenue from most newspapers. For decades, however, public notices have been printed in newspapers for a good reason: to provide the greatest verifiable public exposure for the money spent. (Public notices are billed at a discounted ad rate, by the way). The audience provided by a local newspaper dwarfs the number of readers on a local governmental website. The legislation’s flaws become more apparent with the realization many people still don’t use or have

access to the Internet, especially the poor, the elderly, minorities and the disabled. Ample proof exists that local governments blatantly disregard the law when it comes to posting information online. A recent audit conducted by the Citizens Advocacy Center studied more than 750 public body websites in Illinois. In cases where local governments already are required by law to post information on their websites, the compliance rates were abysmal. Only 73 percent complied with posting notice of upcoming meetings, a mere 57 percent complied with posting proposed meeting agendas and less than half – 48 percent – complied with posting approved meeting minutes. And remember, Illinois has an excessive number of taxing bodies. Citizens would have to check each one to monitor legal ads, which provide notice of such things as public meetings, budget hearings and government expenditures. That’s much less efficient for the public than having a one-stop source for public notices – the local newspaper. For people who use the Internet, Illinois newspapers (including this one) already offer a free, online public notice service. Visit www. publicnoticeillinois.com/ to search for public notices from this community and many others. HB 261 is sitting in the House Counties & Township Committee. That’s where it should die. The bill is a risky step backward for the interests of open, honest, above board government. In Illinois, it’s absolutely the wrong step to take.

We have been living on our block of 60th Place [in Downers Grove] for over 40 years. We personally see no outsiders walk our street. If sidewalks are installed, who would use them? The addition of sidewalks would be a waste of money and will destroy Clyde Country Estates.

Whether it’s the luxury condo monstrosity on Maple [Avenue] or forcing Clyde Estates homeowners to tolerate the removal of their mature trees to accommodate unwanted sidewalks, the bureaucrats in the Downers Grove government can’t seem to realize that their grandiose visions of how the world should look may not be accepted by those who actually must live in it. Hey, village planners, get real. If the residents desire the destruction of historic homes and their replacement with weird apartment buildings or ripping out their Grove does not make them a qualified shade trees in favor of more concrete, candidate to be the mayor. they will tell you this.

Save money for signs

Clyde Estates neighborhood doesn’t need improvement

We don’t live in Clyde Estates, but we enjoy walking in that cozy, calm, green neighborhood, with lovely ranch homes that you can’t find anywhere else. Why is this village intent on planting sidewalks on this nice street of homes that don’t want it? This village council needs to be replaced.

Impartiality questioned

Geoff Neustadt is working for District 58 as a maintenance mechanic. He also negotiates contracts with this school district as a councilman. Now he is running for mayor of Downers Grove. How can Commissioner Neustadt be fair when negotiating city contracts when he indeed works for Downers Grove? This relationship is too close and should be scrutinized by taxpayers more closely. … Just because someone grows up in Downers Grove and works for Downers

The start of February brought in the fifth-largest snowfall in history. Downers Grove seemed to think that gave them an excuse not to do a good job on the streets. We live on a cul-de-sac off of 61st Street and Dunham [Road]. I’d like to know what makes it OK to completely disregard the residents’ safety just because we happen to live on a cul-de-sac? If it wasn’t for the residents trying to clear a path by using their snowblowers on the street, then no one would have been able to get out. I’d live in the city of Chicago if I didn’t want snow removed from the street I live on.

Upset with COD officials

I was just reading the article on “College of DuPage officials respond to radio station fraud.” It seems to me that they’re putting quite a spin on this. One thing they seem to feel is because the percentage, when you figure it that way, is so low when it comes to the cost that it’s insignificant. Maybe I’m not reading this article correctly, but it surely seems to me that the COD officials don’t regard the taxpayers at all. I’m really upset right now.

What’s the deal with Twitter?

What is going on with everyone talking about Twitter? Everyone is always “hashtag this” and “retweet that.” My nephew even tweets his pet peeves every week. I know I sound like an old crank when I say this, but I think it’s all pretty silly.

I think Downers Grove should save the $100,000 and not worry about putting new signs in the village and put that money back into the budget. Also, the Park District should advertise programs that they’re trying to start up and see if they’re going to go to pilot programs like the pickle ball, which has not been advertised and is only being utilized by five people because nobody knows about it. So an article in the newspaper would be [helpful] to see if the program is going to go.

O’Neill Middle School science teachers Janette Syverson (left) and Sarah Pinkus are ready for O’Neill Medical School, which took place Feb. 17 to 20. The pair created the event to encourage critical thinking and pique student interest. Students were divided into seven groups and studied human body specialties ranging from gastroenterology to cardiology. They also shared their knowledge with classmates and took a board exam. Outside assistance came from the Downers Grove Fire Department, Midwestern University, Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital, Advocate Hinsdale Hospital and Chamberlain College of Nursing.

The couple will wed on Saturday May 23, 2015 at South Bridge Church in Orland Park with the reception following at DiNolfo’s Banquets of Homer Glen. The following weekend the couple will move to Atlanta, Georgia to start their new life together.

A new bill introduced to the state House of Representatives could spell the end of the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County Board of Commissioners. On Thursday, state Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, filed House Bill 3099 that would extend the terms of all current board members until Rep. Deb 2018, after which their Conroy responsibilities would be transferred to the DuPage County Board. Conroy said the move was about efficiency and saving money for taxpayers while still caring for county natural resources. “When I was first elected two years ago, I started looking at areas where we could save taxpayer dollars, and the forest preserve was one of the first ones,” she said. “In looking into that, I realized it was the only forest preserve board in the state of Illinois that is paid independently in that way – most have stipends or are covered by the county board.” The DuPage County Board had long

“I feel that to be able to serve the taxpayers of DuPage County from a forest preserve perspective, it is better to have our own board and discuss these issues every day, every week, so we can assure we have our preservation.” Tim Whelan DuPage County Forest Preserve commissioner

had control over the forest preserve, but the county created the separate elected board in 2002 and cut down the number of county board members from 24 to 18, according to the forest preserve’s website. Conroy said eliminating the board of six commissioners and president could save taxpayers more than $500,000 annually by eliminating the board’s salary and insurance costs – which she claims cost up to $77,209.50 per commissioner each year. “With the situation that we are in now financially, every taxpayer dollar is important,” she said. In 2013, Conroy introduced a similar bill that would have let voters decide whether to have the board continue without receiving compensation.

Another bill from former Rep. Dennis Reboletti from the same year would have done the same while dissolving the board in 2016. Under the new bill, the County Board chairman would appoint a fulltime liaison to advise the board on forest preserve issues. DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin said while he “very enthusiastically” supported the mission of the forest preserve to protect and care for the land of DuPage, he would be open to a conversation on the best way to go about it. “Rep. Conroy is proposing a different model – different than the old one, different than the current one, so let’s be honest and open minded about it and take a look at it, just as long as it protects and preserves the

open space and environmental habitats,” he said. Forest preserve commissioner Tim Whelan called the legislation unnecessary and “not very well thought through” and said there are plenty of other, more efficient areas to focus cuts. He said he believed in what the County Board did and it should be separate from the tasks of the forest preserve. “Our mission is preservation and acquisition of and preservation of green space ... and the County Board is more about the concepts of economic development and development,” he said. “Each government agency is different from the beginning – that was the motivation for dividing the boards up in the first place.” Board members frequently meet with staff, constituents and stakeholders outside of official board meetings, Whelan said, providing more perspectives to issues. “I feel that to be able to serve the taxpayers of DuPage County from a forest preserve perspective, it is better to have our own board and discuss these issues every day, every week, so we can assure we have our preservation,” he said.

Elmer Wettour 100th Birthday Army veteran, Elmer Wettour, turns 100 years old on March 9, 2015. He grew up in Brookfield, IL, the oldest of 4 children of George and Amanda Wettour, and has one sister left, Deloris, who turned 90 last August. Prior to World War II beginning, he married Jeannette Vliestra, and this union produced two children, Evalyn Jeanne and Kenneth George. Elmer served his country with valor and distinction, and was stationed in the Pacific during the war, and was honorably discharged six months after the war ended and returned home to his wife, and little girl, whom he had not seen. When Elmer settled into civilian life, he began his life career as a printer at Rand McNally, and retired at 65. During his retirement years, he began a new phase of his life at a local bank in Hinsdale, IL. During that time, his wife, Jeannette, passed away and he was a widower for 4 years. After that, he married Evelyn Blouw, who was a widow. Evelyn and her husband, John, were friends with Elmer and Jeannette. After many years of independent living, Elmer and Evelyn settled into a retirement center in Downers Grove, Saratoga Grove where they now reside. A birthday celebration is planned at Saratoga Grove, March 8, 2015, where his immediate family will join for a festive time for the many years the Lord has blessed him.

Trojans trample WeGo, advance to regional semis DOWNERS GROVE – A balanced offensive effort powered the Downers Grove North boys basketball team to a first round playoff victory Monday night. Thirteen DGN players scored as the Trojans, the No. 12 seed in the Aurora East sectional, ran away with a 69-58 victory against 21st-seeded West Chicago. “It was a really good team win for us,” said Jordon Kedrowski, who led Downers Grove North with a teamhigh 18 points. “We are at our best when we are able to rotate in players and get that kind of contribution from our bench.” Downers Grove North jumped out to a 15-8 advantage by the end of the first quarter. Back-to-back layups from Kedrowski sparked a 11-0 run to open the second quarter as the Trojans took a 29-11 lead into the locker room. Defensively, the DGN guards bottled up the West Chicago back court in the first half, and Trojans’ low-post tandem of David Edwards and Matt Mahlke clogged the lane and limited second-chance opportunities. Downers Grove South’s Khamari Greene goes up for a shot Monday during the Mustangs’ regional quarterfinal game against Hinsdale South.

Mustangs rally comes up short in postseason opener By ALEX SOULIER asoulier@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – The Downers Grove South boys basketball team could not pull off an upset in the first round of the Class 4A postseason. Matched against Hinsdale South, the 13 seed in the Aurora East sectional, the No. 20 seed and regional host Mustangs orchestrated a second-half rally Monday night but ultimately came up short, falling 64-43. Monday’s defeat marked the fourth time this season DGS lost to Hinsdale South, as the Mustangs dropped both West Suburban Gold conference matchups and also were Downers Grove South’s Denis Al- edged by the Hornets at the ibegovic attempts a shot Monday Wheaton Warrenville South in a regional quarterfinal game MLK tournament. “We’ve seen them a lot this against Hinsdale South.

Game breakdown Downers Grove South 43, Hinsdale South 64 DGS LEADERS n T.J. Clifford: 11 points n Denis Alibegovic: 8 points season, they are a good, well balanced team,” DGS head coach Kris Olson said. “Two of the first three games were decided by single digits, but they outworked us in the first half tonight and that was the difference.” The Hornets came out buzzing in the early going against Downers Grove South, jumping out to a 15-6 lead after one quarter then going on an 8-2 run to begin the second frame. Meanwhile, the Mustangs

could do little offensively in the first half, scoring just 11 points through 16 minutes and trailing 31-11 at halftime. “For whatever reason in the first half, we came out flat and couldn’t do much out of our offensive sets,” Olson said. “But I was proud of the way we played in the second half. At halftime I told them, ‘We have 16 minutes, let’s lay it all on the line.’” DGS cut the deficit to 16 by the end of the third quarter. With 5:30 remaining the fourth, two Denis Alibegovic free throws followed by a Mantas Augustinavicius layup cut the Hinsdale South lead to 4636. But Hinsdale South responded with a 14-0 run to put the game out of reach and end the season for Downers Grove South, which finished its 2014-

15 campaign with a 5-24 record. “It was a growing year for us, we learned a lot and we have a lot of talent coming back next season, especially with Denis Alibegovic, T.J. Clifford and Khamari Greene,” Olson said. While Green, a physical guard and good facilitator, is one of six juniors who will presumably return next year, the Mustangs’ top two scorers, Alibegovic and Clifford, only are sophomores and will be back for the 2015-16 season. But the program will say goodbye to four seniors, including two-year starter Augustinavicius. “These seniors are all battlers and extremely hard workers,” Olson said. “They have been great to coach and have had a really positive affect on the team.”

Trojan senior swimmer Bob Bonanno competed in

both the 50-yard freestyle and 100 free at Friday’s state final preliminaries at New Trier High School. Bonanno finished in 25th place in the 50 free prelim with a time of 21.84 and came in 26th place in the 100 free prelim, touching the wall in 47.69. He did not advance to the final in either event.

Junior Sam Dumford competed in the 50-yard freestyle and 100 free at Friday’s state final prelims at New Trier High School. Dumford came in 23rd place in the 50 free with a time of 21.70 and placed 29th in the 100 free with a time of 47.82. He did not advance to the final in either event.

Soulier: What does it mean to you to get a win in your first playoff game with Downers Grove North? Kedrowski: It feels great. Not

only because this is the first playoff win in a while for the Downers Grove North boys basketball program, but it’s also my first playoff win ever. So it felt good to get the first one and hopefully it will give us some

momentum going forward.

Soulier: Thirteen players scored points for the team tonight. How important is it to get that kind of contribution from up and down the lineup? Kedrowski: That’s the good

thing about this team. I firmly believe that you are only as good as your bench, and we often get contributions from a lot of guys on different nights. We have some guys that are very consistent and we have some guys that can go off at any moment.

Soulier: The defense played a huge role in helping you jump out to an early lead. Did you make it a point to set the tone defensively in the first half? Kedrowski: Definitely.

We know we have a capable offense, but defense is going to be what propels us through the playoffs.

Benet, which has yet to play a postseason game decided by 10 or less points, would face the winner of Fremd and New Trier in the state championship game at 8:15 p.m. Saturday in Normal. The third-place game will be at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Redbird Arena.

As he’s done all year, senior point guard Jordon Kedrowski was the catalyst for the Downers Grove North offense in the first round of the Class 4A boys basketball playoffs. Kedrowski scored 18 points Monday as the Trojans cruised to a 69-58 victory against West Chicago. BLOOMINGTON – The Benet girls basketball team defeated previously unbeaten Edwardsville 61-50 Monday night to advance to the state semifinals for first time in program history. Monday’s victory in the Class 4A Bloomington supersectional at Illinois Wesleyan University not only assures the Redwing girls of their first state trophy, but also seals a date with Homewood-Flossmoor at 6:30 p.m. Friday in the state semifinal at Redbird Arena in Normal. The Redwings darted out to an 18-2 lead Monday before Edwardsville orchestrated a 10-0 run and pulled within 2722 at halftime. Edwardsville then cut Redwings’ advantage to 37-36 in the final minute of the third quarter, but Benet’s Morgan Thomalla sunk a late 3-pointer to push the advantage back to four points. Benet clamped down defensively in the final quarter and received timely shots from Kathleen Doyle (17 points) and Emily Eshoo (16 points) to seal the victory. The Redwings advanced to the Bloomington supersectional with wins against Bolingbrook and Oswego to claim the Oswego East sectional championship. Benet, the top seed in the sectional, blew past Oswego on Feb. 26 to claim its first sectional title since 2004. The Redwings held a 22-11 advantage after one quarter and a 44-28 lead at the break.
