two robberies, leads police on chase pastor for stealing SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA from charity Be the first to know

A Downers Grove man has been charged with robbing a Downers Grove pizza parlor, attempting to rob a Hinsdale gas station and leading authorities on a chase, the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office announced in a news release. James W. Himpler, 48, of the 4800 block of Oakwood Avenue, faces charges of aggravated robbery, attempted aggravated robbery, and aggravated fleeing and eluding a police officer, the release stated. James W. Himpler allegedly Himpler robbed a Domino’s Pizza at 12:30 a.m. Sunday on Belmont Road in Downers Grove after telling the store clerk he was armed, according to the release. He allegedly stole $127 from the business. At 4:15 a.m., Himpler entered the Shell Food Mart at York Road and Ogden Avenue in Hinsdale, and allegedly told the clerk he was armed and demanded money, but left with-

out stealing anything, the release stated. Several witnesses called law enforcement and a chase followed before Himpler was arrested by the Burr Ridge Police Department, according to the release. “It is alleged that within a fourhour period, Mr. Himpler entered two separate businesses intent on robbery,” said State’s Attorney Robert Berlin in the release. “Thankfully no one was hurt at either establishment and through the fine work of several law enforcement agencies, he was taken into custody a short time later.” Himpler is being held on a $400,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court April 27.

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA A youth pastor and Wheaton resident is accused of stealing about $400 in voucher cards from Downers Grove charity Hope’s Front Door, according to a news release from the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office. Rix Thorsell, 27, of the 100 block of North Cross Street, is charged with one count of theft from a place of worship, a Class 4 felony, the release stated. About $4,000 in voucher cards belonging to the organization was stolen the weekend of March 6 from an office in the First Congregational United Church of Christ, out of which the charity operates, according to the release. The cards, redeemable for goods at stores such as Jewel, McDonald’s and Speedway, were to be distributed to those in need. Through a Downers Grove Police

ERRORS

are much more common now - since Tax Reform is not Tax Simplification! If you do not include all income, or if you put information on the wrong line, the IRS computers can find you. Math errors (especially on the tax computation worksheet of Schedule D with qualified dividends and capital gains) are only one problem. Others are: • Correctly completing the all new Schedule D for gains and losses with the new Form 8949 • Calculating the correct amount of taxable Social Security • Including the correct amount of Estimated Tax paid for 2014 • Adding tax-free income and subtracting retirement income on the IL 1040 • Including your Real Estate Parcel Number on your IL ICR These errors can slow down your refund and cause an IRS or IL letter. The computers check all 1099s and the computation on all returns. Letters from the IRS or IL scare even the best of us when they arrive. STRAUSS TAX SERVICE can accurately prepare your 2014 tax return, explain each form, answer your questions for 2015 tax planning and save you money. Downers Grove council to meet on Election Day By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – The Downers Grove Village Council will meet April 7, which also is Election Day. Holding a council meeting the same day as an election is not new, Mayor Martin Tully said. He said there has been a meeting on Election Day as long as he can remember. Those meetings are generally shorter than a regular meeting, and

Tully said he doesn’t want to keep people away from any election commitments. “We will try to move quickly through [the agenda items],” he said. Tully said it is “really not possible” to cancel the meeting because of the March calendar. The council meets the first three Tuesdays of the month. This year, March had five Tuesdays. Tully said that means on Election Day it will have been three weeks since the council

last met March 17. The agenda for the Election Day meeting has not been finalized and will not be finalized until Friday, but Tully said the council has several things it needs to do, including approving claims that have not been paid since the last meeting and possibly going into executive session. “We always have business to do,” he said. At the Feb. 10 council meeting, commissioner David Olsen suggested the

Election Day meeting be postponed to the following Tuesday. “It seems to me that folks may be distracted … by that election, so having a council meeting may not be particularly productive on that day,” he said during the February meeting. At the meeting, Village Manager David Fieldman said the village will keep the agenda light and the council will only address essential items. “We have an overwhelming amount of work to do,” he said.

Pace announces addition of new Downers Grove bus route SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA DOWNERS GROVE – Pace Suburban Bus Service will add a new route to Downers Grove starting Monday, the company announced in a news release. The three partners are working together for the development of the route with the Regional Transportation Authority, which is providing grant funding and planning assistance. The remainder of the funding for the route’s operation will come from Hamilton Partners, the company that manages the Esplanade. “Any time that we can work with

our partners to implement new bus service, it’s a great thing for the region because we’re helping commuters to save money versus driving, reducing traffic congestion and air pollution, and having a positive impact on the local economy,” Pace Board of Directors Chairman Richard Kwasneski stated in the release. District 99 approves $1.8M lease for Chromebooks By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Community High School District 99 is increasing students’ access to technology, approving a $1.8 million lease to purchase personal devices for students starting next year. At its March 16 meeting, the district’s Board of Education approved entering a lease agreement to purchase 3,700 Chromebooks to serve all students in the district. The program will begin in the fall semester of the 2015-16 school year. According to board documents, the district just finished a pilot program with the devices and decided to move forward with the program.

The total lease is $1,760,180, which will cover the cost of 3,700 Chromebooks and cases for students and laptops for teachers and administrators. When adding in interest, the total annual payment due by the district will be $595,251, according to Mark Staehlin, controller for the district. The district will use three sources of revenue to repay the lease. The first is through student fees, which are expected to cover $252,000 of the lease. The student fee will be $90. “We just felt the way to have this program be able to be presented … is charge a fee for devices,” Staehlin said. Of the student fee, $70 will be used for the payment of devices and the remaining $20 will be used to provide insurance

for the devices. Currently, the district has $143,251 set aside in this year’s budget to cover a lease for staff devices that has been rolled into the new lease. The $143,251 will be used this fall to pay off a portion of the Chromebook lease. The remaining $200,000 will be paid for out of the operating fund in the district’s budget. “The district will have to reallocate some of its budget,” Staehlin said. According to board documents, the district decided to move forward with a lease program instead of paying the full cost up front because it would be less of a financial impact on the district in one fiscal year. Chromebooks will only be rented

to students at this time, but Staehlin said the district is looking into possibly letting students keep them after they graduate. The devices have an expected lifetime of three years, and devices in the pilot program experienced shortened battery lives, which Staehlin said is a “bit of a problem” they’re working through. But Staehlin said he feels the district is ready to roll out Chromebooks. “We’re very excited about the program,” he said. Jill Browning, director of communications for the district, said teachers have undergone professional development training for the devices and will be able to properly use the Chromebooks in the classroom.

District 99 celebrates OUR VIEW the real champions PR firm hire can’t obscure bad decisions at College of DuPage

Dr. Mark McDonald is the superintendent of District 99, including North and South high schools in Downers Grove. Laura Burke, general manager lburke@shawmedia.com 630-427-6213

Dave Lemery, editor dlemery@shawmedia.com 630-427-6250

College of DuPage serves about 28,000 students a semester, making it the second-largest undergraduate institution in Illinois. It has more than 90 certificate and degree programs. It’s a jewel of the western suburbs, extending beyond its namesake county to serve students from Lemont to Naperville, from La Grange to Elmhurst to West Chicago, all from its campus in Glen Ellyn. That litany of good things makes the ongoing torrent of bad news from and about COD leadership all the more outrageous for those of us who live and pay taxes in the school’s district. The recent hiring of a $250-an-hour public relations firm, for instance, fits the textbook definition of irony perfectly. Spending taxpayer money to convince those same taxpayers you didn’t waste their money is so ludicrous on its face that one wonders if the board members piled out of a clown car when they arrived at the meeting where this decision took place. “I think it’s clear that there is need for a PR firm to help the public understand what the true facts are,” board Chairwoman Erin Birt said. It seems that “true facts” about the college are emerging on an almost daily basis, and the public doesn’t seem to be having any trouble understanding them: • Carla Burkhart, a member of the College of DuPage Foundation Board of Directors, has received more than $630,000 in no-bid contracts. Her graphic design firm, Herricane Graphics, was given contracts in 2012 and 2014 for designing signage worth a total

of more than $186,000. Change orders on the contracts have hiked the total payments, according to board documents. • The Chicago Tribune, citing law enforcement and other sources, reported Monday that the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office has issued grand jury subpoenas for records relating to expenses for school administrators at Waterleaf, the restaurant on campus. The Tribune has reported COD President Robert Breuder and other administrators expensed more than $190,000 on food and drinks in the past three years at Waterleaf. • Dan Bailey, a candidate in the upcoming election for COD Board of Trustees, claimed more than $2 million was handed out to College of DuPage Foundation board members without having to submit a competitive bid. Bailey’s allegations prompted Birt to launch a “review” of the practice. This is all on top of alleged fraud at the college’s radio station, Breuder’s sweetheart deal to step down as president with an extra $762,000 in his pocket after an embarrassing email leaked, and the board’s continued dithering on whether to allow an audit of its finances. Students at the school pay $140 per credit hour. That, and taxpayers across the suburbs, in multiple counties, are paying for all of this. If you haven’t voted already, you’re going to want to weigh in. You can see what 11 of the 12 candidates have to say, both incumbents and challengers, at http://shawurl. com/1tfx. Make sure you’re informed so you can help get this great school back on course.

“I am not ashamed of my disability,” said South High junior Alex Newell, who was diagnosed with autism when he was just 2 years old. “My mother and father taught me so many things in life, like how to be confident in myself.” Alex is one of 36 students who play on one of District 99’s three Special Olympics basketball teams, which inCOMMUNITY clude a mix of students from VOICE North High, South High and Mark Transition 99, the district’s program for older students McDonald with disabilities. He was addressing the hundreds of people who had gathered in the student cafeteria to celebrate the first-, second- and third-place trophies the teams captured at the state tournament in mid-March. In addition to families, school staff and Board of Education members in the audience, “regular ed” students filled every corner. They had taken the time after school to attend the ceremony and loudly applaud the achievements of their classmates. Alex was a proud champion, happy and encouraging of others with disabilities. After he spoke, people clapped. Many cried. The next day, South High held its annual fundraiser assembly, uniting students in support of one worthy cause. The students voted to support St. Baldrick’s Foundation. The school raised over $62,000 – bringing its total donation to this one charity alone to more than $250,000. Even more impressive, though, was the high level of student and community involvement the event generated. Community members of all ages attended the assembly, cheering those who were cancer survivors and remembering those who were not. The following week, North High came together as a school to support Honor Flight Chicago, a program that flies World War II veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit the WWII Memorial. The school has a long and proud history of honoring those who have served our country. The annual Veterans Day event, for example, welcomes scores of local veterans into the school. Students know many of the veterans personally, which helps them understand how meaningful a visit to D.C. is to these older people. These events are just a few of the many examples throughout the school year of how our high schools are creating lasting memories about giving for students, which we hope will have a positive impact on their lives well beyond their high school years. While academic and athletic accolades and awards are wonderful, the real champions in life are those who give back to others.

SOUND OFF

I recently received a campaign mailing from Commissioner Durkin where one of the things he described himself as was an advocate for seniors. I’d like to know how voting to cut the Meals on Wheels funding and the senior taxi vouchers was any sort of advocacy. … When he cut that funding he saved the village a total of about $40,000 a year, and this is the same guy that is bending over backward to spend $50 million on a police station that we don’t need. I would just like to say as a senior on a fixed income with a modest home and a flooded yard from over-development, Commissioner Durkin, you’ve never advocated for me.

One would hope it is not necessary to remind voters that the two members of the [College of DuPage] Board of Trustees who voted in favor of the [Robert] Breuder buyout and who are running for re-election to the board have proven themselves to be unacceptable for board membership. With their votes they made it clear it was easier for them to soak the taxpayers who are not responsible for their mismanagement than to deal with the wrath of Mr. Breuder, had he been denied what he wanted. We also need to keep this in mind when the 2017 election rolls around should two more of these alleged public servants decide to run for re-election to the board.

Machine-style politics in DuPage

What’s going on with the DuPage County Republican organization with the consolidation election upon us? Our family would like to express our appreciation to the Downers Grove Sanitary District for their help with our recent sewer repairs. We had a plumber discover the sewer from our house was broken and informed us of a repair program offered by the sanitary district. After contacting them we were told we were eligible for the program that completely covered all of our repair costs. The sanitary district staff could not have been more responsive, accommodating and professional. They helped us through the emergency application process, scheduled their contractors and completely supervised the work to insure it was done correctly. … What could have been a major catastrophe turned out to only be a minor inconvenience.

WATER METER READING DEVICE PROJECT The Village has begun a 12-month process of replacing the meter transmission units (MTU) that send water meter readings from residential and business customer meters to the Village for water billing. The Village's vendor, Aclara, and their contractor Scope Services, will remove the existing MTUs and install the new ones at each building over the course of 2015. There will not be service or billing disruptions when the units are replaced. Most MTU replacements will take less than 30 minutes and will occur entirely on the exterior of the building, with the same exterior placement as the existing MTU. For locations where the MTU is inside a home or building, Scope will make an appointment with the customer to access the unit. Scope will maintain a customer service line, 1-888-209-5075, to respond to inquiries from residents and businesses. Customers may also contact the Village with questions.

He is not only one of the Trojans’ top-four pitchers, notching a 2-0 record and a 3.50 ERA last season, but also is one of the team’s most consistent hitters, batting .329 and knocking in 26 RBIs in 2014. Additionally, Farley is regarded as a solid defender and will start at shortstop when he isn’t pitching. Filling out the middle of the order are seniors Cappetta and Pat Geraghty, who drove in 20 and 22 runs, respectively, last season. Junior Brendan Shanahan also is back in the fold after hitting for a .280 average in 2014. Dalton Baran, Jake Stevenson and Jack Warwick will provide infield depth for the Trojans.

DOWNERS GROVE – A seasoned pitching staff plus a wealth of experience could equate to a big year on the diamond for Downers Grove North. With an opening-day lineup featuring 13 seniors and eight juniors, Trojans head coach Chad Isaacson is optimistic his aces and team leaders can carry the load this spring. “Our pitching staff is going to keep us in a lot of games,” Isaacson said. “We will look to compete every day and continually get better. Outlook: A potent lineup has the Redwings eyeing a third straight East Suburban Catholic Conference title. Even after graduating two of its top players after last season, the 2015 Benet baseball team returns 17 seniors and boasts a strong group of hitters, including Connor Hickey [.376 average in 2014], Jon Kruppe [.330] and Villanova bound Cole Channell [.300]. Downers Grove North, South begin boys volleyball season SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA DOWNERS GROVE – Downers Grove North and Downers Grove South boys volleyball teams recently returned to the court, setting the table for what could be an exciting season for both squads. After going 22-15 last year and falling to their crosstown counterpart in a regional semifinal, an experience 2015 DGN squad is ready to make some noise in a loaded West Suburban Silver conference. “We bring a lot of senior experience to the team this year and great depth as well,” Downers Grove North head

“We bring a lot of senior experience to the team this year and great depth as well.” Mark Wasik Downers Grove North head coach coach Mark Wasik said. “We will be as successful as long as our setters are able to run a consistent offense with good decision making and setting location. We have the potential to compete with the top team in state.” Middle blocker Jonathan Poortinga leads a strong core of returning seniors that includes outside hitter Liam

Reidy, middle blocker Michal Mierzwa, defensive specialist Colin Michels and setter Dan Gilbert. Wasik also is expecting big things from a junior class featuring outside hitter Dan Kalmar and setter Ben Goodell. After a three-set defeat to a strong Naperville Central squad in the season opener, the Trojans rebounded with a

25-17, 21-25, 25-19 win against Downers Grove South on March 24 and a 25-15, 25-23 victory against Metea Valley on March 25. In addition to their conference schedule, the Trojans will compete at invites at Schaumburg, Downers Grove South, Lincoln-Way East and Richards this season. Across town, 6-foot-7 senior outside hitter Will Tischler headlines a group of just four seniors on this year’s Downers Grove South varsity team. While Tischler will be flanked by classmates Eddie Binion, Kyle Harty and Jeremy Hroma, the Mustangs will need

some of the juniors and underclassmen to step up if they are to make a run to the state tournament. Downers Grove South, which won the state championship in 2013, likely will jockey with Addison Trail and Morton for West Suburban Gold supremacy. The Mustangs will face a tough out of conference schedule that includes a match against Glenbard West on May 5. Additionally, DGS will host an invite beginning April 24, and will compete in invites at Wheaton Warrenville South, Glenbard East and Lincoln-Way East.

The Trojans’ pitcher gave up three hits and two unearned runs in six innings Saturday, earning his first victory of the young season. After notching five wins and posting a 2.23 ERA in 2014, starting pitcher Ryan Andrews will be leaned on again this season. The DGN pitcher got off to a solid start Saturday, striking out three and surrendering three hits and no walks as the Trojans defeated Wheaton North 3-2. The Downers Grove North girls track and field team won the March 20 West Suburban Conference Silver Division indoor conference championship for the first time since 1993. Sophomore Emma Moravec placed first in the 800-meter and 400-meter sprints and participated in the Trojans’ firstplace 4x400 team that also included Rachel Schuetz, Zayna Jan and Hannah Henry. Isabel Maletich also took home gold in the long jump while Schuetz won the 300-meter dash. Second place finishes were recorded by Maletich in the triple jump, Sophie Temple-Wood in the 200, Jaida Green in the high jump and the 4x200 relay of Schuetz, Henry, Temple-Wood and Faith LaMantia. The Trojan girls then broke two school records Saturday at the Illinois Top Times Championships in Bloomington. The 4x400 team finished fourth with a time of 4:04.47, breaking a school record they previously set during the DGS Mustang Relays. Additionally, Maletich’s triple jump of 35-feet, 6-inches broke a 2012 school record and earned her sixth place at the meet. Also competing at the Illinois Top Times Championships were Moravec, who placed fourth in the 800, and the 4x200 and 4x800 Trojan girls relay teams.
