eshields@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – A new high school focusing on classical education and the Catholic faith will open this fall in Downers Grove. The Chesterton Academy of the Holy Family will be in session as of Aug. 24 at the First Presbyterian Church, 339 Fourth St. The co-ed, private high school will offer an integrated classical curriculum that addresses the humanities, math, science, music, art and how they all connect, according to co-founder Miriam Tierney. Students will work without computers or iPads, and the academy will start every day with a Catholic mass. “You do all of that, so you’re kind of thinking like a whole person,” co-founder Julie Bowles said. Bowles, a Downers Grove resident, said she had been looking for a school for her two sons. “There weren’t any that had a Catholic curriculum,” she said. Bowles and a couple of friends decided to start a new school that would meet their needs. They settled on Downers Grove for the location because it was central to where they were getting

The academy is drawing attention in several area communities, according to Tierney, who lives in Western Springs. She said the school has received applications from Downers Grove, Westmont, La Grange, Oak Park, Aurora and Naperville, among others. “A lot of people want this type of education for their kids,” she said. Tierney said prior to establishing the academy she was homeschooling her children because she couldn’t find a school that was right for them.

Service Directory: 630-427-6238 Recruitment & General Classified: 877-264-2527 Q: What is the function of the tongue? A: Your tongue actually has many functions. For one thing, it is essential to speech. You could speak intelligibly with no teeth, but you could not do without a tongue. The tongue also helps you move food around in your mouth so that you can chew it properly and position it for swallowing and, ultimately, digesting. It also helps with cleaning the mouth, sweeping about and plucking particles of food from the nooks and crannies of the mouth. The tongue also exerts subtle but necessary pressure on teeth, helping to keep them in line. And when teeth are erupting, the tongue coaxes them into their proper positions. The tongue is also the home of your taste buds. They are what help make food appealing, a critical factor in getting the nutrition you need. In combination with your nose, the center of the olfactory (smell) sense, the taste buds discern salty, sour, sweet and bitter tastes and meld them into a pleasant combination. The tongue, as you can see, is essential to your quality of life. Like any other part of the body, it is susceptible to disease, like cancer. When the dentist examines you, he or she looks not only at your teeth and gums, but at all the tissue in your oral cavity. The next time you visit your dentist, ask about how you can keep your tongue healthy.

The demolition of the historic Edwards House, which occurred in June after months of discussion between advocates and officials, is a motivating factor behind the Village Council’s consideration of a preservation committee. cent of structures in a proposed historic district meet at least two of the criteria for landmark designation • Allowing for exterior modification reimbursements for property owners of up to $5,000 for a single project, among other incentives for property owners who undertake historic preservation measures. Barnett said the original historic preservation ordinance was introduced in 2007 to allow for the creation of historic districts and to help homes get historic landmark status. He said no historic districts have been established in that time, and two houses have achieved landmark status.

The proposed changes were defeated by a 5-2 vote, with Barnett and commissioner Greg Hose in favor. Hose said changing the ordinance would be an interim action to help residents pursue historic preservation and that more work could be done in the future. “I think these are good first steps of preserving the history of Downers Grove,” he said. Commissioner William Waldack said the changes would make it harder to save historic landmarks. “You can call it historic preservation, but if you make it tougher … you can call it open season on polar bears

and call it environmental protection,” he said. Commissioners David Olsen, Bill White and Gina Vattimo all felt changes to the ordinance should be voted on later. Tully said none of the proposed changes would have helped save the Edwards House, and other matters such as the village’s comprehensive plan and zoning map need to be considered when discussing the ordinance. He said the Architectural Design Review Board has been studying ordinance options for several months and that its ideas should be considered before any changes are made.

DOWNERS GROVE – The Downers Grove Village Council considered the formation of a committee to study changes to the village’s historic preservation ordinance at a meeting July 7. The committee was proposed by Mayor Martin Tully, who said community input is needed on the matter. “This is a bigger issue than all of us,” he said. Historic preservation has been a hot topic recently, as crews tore down the Edwards House, an 1890s Queen Anne Victorian on Maple Avenue, in June. Residents were pleased with the idea of the committee. Ken Lerner, chairman of the Pierce Downers Heritage Alliance, said the events of past months show the need for it. “Obviously this is a time when the community has a tremendous amount of interest,” he said. Resident Gordon Goodman said he hopes the committee would look at preservation efforts in surrounding communities. Village Manager David Fieldman said village administrators would set the groundwork for the committee with a proposed timeline. The committee likely would work closely with the Architectural Design Review Board. The council was scheduled to hear a first reading July 14 of a resolution to form the committee as an ad hoc subcommittee of the board. Also on July 7, the council rejected proposed changes to the historic preservation ordinance brought forth by commissioner Bob Barnett, who agreed the demolition of the Edwards House revealed the failings of the current iteration. “The events of the last eight to 10 months have heightened this subject in terms of its importance,” he said. Proposed changes included: • Allowing property owners to opt out of a historic district • Requiring a mimimum of 33 per-

Downers Grove resident starts 100+ Who Care chapter “It’s very kind of spur of the moment. That’s kind of the fun.”

By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – After Jay Sebben made a New Year’s resolution to give to charity, he took it one step further by including more than 100 other people in his efforts. The Downers Grove resident founded the Chicago chapter of 100+ Who Care, a professional organization that donates to nonprofits on a quarterly basis. The group was formed earlier this year after Sebben heard about the idea from a friend in Iowa. Sebben had a lot of contacts in Chicago, and decided he could get a chapter up and running. The group met for the first time in May, and participants all brought a blank check made out for $100. If they wanted, attendees could nominate a charity to which they felt the chapter should donate. Photo provided Three nominees were Downers Grove resident Jay Sebben recently has started the Chicago pulled from a hat, and whoever nominated the selected nonchapter of donation group 100+ Who Care.

Jay Sebben 100+ Who Care Chicago chapter founder profits gave a pitch about why that charity should receive the funds. Then all the members voted on which charity should get the money. Whatever nonprofit received the most votes got a check from all the attendees. “All the money goes directly to the local charity,” Sebben said. In the first vote, Palatine-based nonprofit WINGS narrowly beat the competition. The charity, which helps victims of domestic violence, received $10,200 in donations. WINGS CEO Rebecca Darr said in a news release that the nonprofit owns and operates a safe house in the northwest suburbs and is building a shel-

ter on Chicago’s southwest side. Both are “safe havens for Chicago area women and their children to escape domestic violence or homelessness,” she said. Sebben said he wanted to start the chapter because it’s “highly impactful.” A charity may not even know it’s being nominated. “It’s very kind of spur of the moment. That’s kind of the fun,” he said. The two nominated nonprofits that don’t win the grand prize still get heightened awareness, Sebben said, and some donors even give additional money to a runner-up. Winners cannot be nominated for a year after receiving the group donation. Sebben anticipates the chapter will continue to grow with each meeting. He said he expects about 150 people to attend the next event, which will be held Aug. 13 at 7 p.m. at Knoll Modern Furniture, 222 W. Merchandise Mart Plaza #1111, Chicago.

Police hold Downers Grove woman on heroin delivery charge By JUAN PABLO GARCIA jugarcia@shawmedia.com A Downers Grove woman with a history of drug dealing is being held on $100,000 bail after police found 2.1 grams of heroin in her car, according to Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney David Shin. Nicole T. Drane, 31, of the 5000 block of Dunham Road, was arrested June 29 in the 1300 block of Chicago Street in Elgin by the Illinois State Police North Central Task Force and charged with one count of manufacture and delivery of heroin, a Class 1 felony, court documents stated. In December 2014, Drane was suspect-

ed of dealing heroin in the area of Hanover Park, Shin said. As a result, the task force requested a search warrant of her car and its occupants. After observing Drane allegedly delivering narcotics Nicole T. in Schaumburg, they ex- Drane ecuted the warrant and found seven packs of heroin. Drane appeared in court June 30 before Cook County Judge Joseph Cataldo and was ordered held on $100,000 bail, requiring a source of bail hearing prior to acceptance of bail. This measure was requested to make sure bail funds do not come from illicit activity,

Her next court date is 9 a.m. July 23 in the Rolling Meadows courthouse, court documents stated. This is not Drane’s first offense, according to Shin. In 2004, authorities found heroin on her when she was stopped for a traffic violation. Drane was charged with Class 1 felony man-

ufacture and delivery of a controlled substance and sentenced to two years of probation that March. The probation was terminated unsuccessfully in February 2006 after she sold cocaine to an undercover Maywood Police Department officer, Shin said. She was charged with Class 2 felony manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance and Class 4 felony possession of a controlled substance. Drane was sentenced to two years of probation, which terminated unsuccessfully in February 2008, according to Shin. Because of her prior felony convictions, her most recent offense is nonprobational, he said.

Heartworm prevention is critical to your pet’s health because heartworm can be fatal to your dog or cat. It’s a progressive disease transmitted to your pet by mosquitoes, taking six months for the larvae to mature into adult heartworms which can live for five to seven years in dogs and two or three years in cats. The earlier it is detected, the better your pet’s chance for survival, according to the American Heartworm Society. Prevention is critical because there are few, if any, early signs, so detecting the presence of heartworm by testing through your veterinarian is important. Heartworm affects dogs and cats differently. The foot long worms live in the heart, lungs and blood vessels in dogs, causing severe lung disease, heart failure and damaging other organs. In cats heartworms rarely survive to adult stage, but immature heartworms can cause heartworm associated respiratory disease, or HARD. The medication used to treat dogs can’t be used in cats.

Prevention is the only way to protect cats. The signs of heartworm in dogs often don’t show up in the early stages. Symptoms can include mild persistent cough, reluctance to exercise, fatigue, decreased appetite and weight loss. In later stages pets can develop heart failure and a swollen belly from excess abdominal fluid. Dogs with many heartworms can develop blockages of blood flow in the heart, that, if not immediately removed, is usually fatal. Heartworm disease in cats can include coughing, asthma-like attacks, periodic vomiting, lack of appetite and weight loss or swollen belly. Unfortunately, the only sign in some cats is collapse or sudden death. Dogs should be tested yearly. Puppies under seven months can begin heartworm prevention treatment before testing because it takes six months for a dog to test positive. Cats can be screened through an antibody test or ultrasound.

Somewhere in Kentucky lives a little girl who has touched many hearts and inspired the giving of clothing and toys to many other needy children, and she doesn’t even know it. This little girl was on a list of children to be “adopted” at Christmastime, where the donor would provide winter clothing that the little girl badly needed. The girl’s donor was Karen Hader, a parishioner at St. Mary of Gostyn. Although Karen never met the recipient of the winter clothing and toys she purchased, the experience touched her heart. “ In the spring, I thought of the little girl and wondered if she needed any clothing or toys for spring and summer,” said Karen. “I thought she might need shorts and t-shirts, and maybe some bubbles or sidewalk chalk.” Karen realized there are many “drives” during the winter holidays and for school supplies, but there didn’t seem to be any for spring. “I had no way of contacting

the little girl, so I realized that she was put into my life to “pass it along,” said Karen. “I received enthusiastic support from SMG, and we got the word out about Spring Baskets through the website, email blasts, and in the bulletin.” Karen received help with the program from SMG parishioners Amy Laverty and Danielle Heyer. She worked with Kathleen Langdon at Catholic Charities in Joliet to get information about the recipients (age, gender, sizes). Catholic Charities distributes the baskets. Karen added that the program is a great way to get children involved in giving to and thinking of others. Younger children can help pick out the clothing and toys and arrange them in the basket. Older children can use the program as a great Lenten project or to fulfill service hours. Karen’s next step is to get more churches involved with the Spring Basket program. She hopes to add at least one more church next year. For more information about donating to next year’s Spring Basket program, please contact:

Increase in expenses has village mulling service cuts Downers Grove expenses expected to exceed revenue, according to village manager By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com

DOWNERS GROVE – Downers Grove officials aren’t ruling out the possibility of cutting services because of increasing expenses and leveling revenues. At a workshop meeting July 7, Village Council commissioners all expressed a desire to a least talk about service cuts in light of the precarious financial situation. Village Manager David Fieldman said it’s likely Downers Grove’s expenses will exceed its revenues in the near future. Factors driving up village expenses include salary increases, health benefits costs and public safety pensions, he said, all of which are expected to keep growing moving forward. Revenues, Fieldman said, could level off because of a proposed reduction of state income tax revenue, a proposed property tax freeze and slow sales tax growth over the past year. The income and property tax issues are being discussed at the state level. Fieldman said there was only a 1 percent growth in sales tax in Downers Grove from 2013 to 2014. Possible solutions Fieldman suggested to the council include reducing personnel expenses, consolidation, enhancing the village’s revenue base, working with the Downers Grove Economic Development Corp. to increase the village’s sales tax base and cutting some services. Services listed on the village website include snow removal, pothole and sidewalk repair, and garbage collection. All commissioners said it would be a good idea to look at services the village provides and places to cut back. Commissioner David Olsen said if the state reduces Downers Grove’s income tax revenue and prevents the village from being able to raise property taxes while sales taxes stay flat, cutting services would be the only way to reduce expenses. Commissioner Bob Barnett said it’s necessary to evaluate the issue now because it’s reasonable to expect village expenses will increase 6 to 8 percent annually.

OUR VIEW Celebrate business success with Chamber Important steps to avoid While America was honoring its 239th birthday on the most glorious weekend of the year, Chamber630 was celebrating right along with our great country; a big difference was that it was the first birthday of Chamber630. As I reflect on all that has transpired in the last year, “impressed with these ridiculously great Members,” comes to COMMUNITY mind. I won’t bore you with VOICE details, but these folks have Laura worked very hard to achieve the most optimal business Crawford environment possible. A colleague and friend of mine has a favorite saying, “High tides float all boats.” Since that friend now is running the tollway, let’s hope he doesn’t have to worry anymore about boats, but his saying holds true. When a successful business moves in down the road, it helps all surrounding businesses to succeed. Business has no borders. When Chamber630 was “born,” the sole purpose was to do something great for business, and it’s so apparent that we’ve fulfilled that purpose, we will once again be celebrating the successful Members of Chamber630 at an awards ceremony on Sept. 17 at the beautiful Tivoli Theatre. The Business Excellence category will take nominations for companies involved in hospitality, retail, business services, professional and industrial. Past winners include Sound Check Entertainment, Heritage House Florists, Wannemaker’s, Americraft and Wenzel Select Properties, to name a few. The Community Contribution Awards will go to one nonprofit organization and one philanthropic company. Some past winners are West Suburban Community Pantry, Hope’s Front Door and Helping Girls Navigate Adolescence. For philanthropy, AT&T, Midwestern University and Perma-Seal have been recognized. The Individual Awards recognize one young professional and a person deserving of lifetime achievement recognition. The latter has been awarded to Jan Kopis, The Honorable Timothy McJoynt, B.J. Boyd, Willis and Shirley Johnson, Gregory Beggs, Jim Russ Sr. and so many other great, great leaders. If you do business at a place that always provides great customer service and goes above and beyond for you, please provide them a nomination. It’s important to celebrate success! You can visit Chamber630.com to nominate your favorite business. Just click the banner at the top. The deadline is approaching, so don’t hesitate. I look forward to seeing you at the Tivoli in September when we celebrate your best business.

contracting West Nile virus

It seems the buzz surrounding the West Nile virus in Illinois quiets more every summer. That’s not a reason, however, to not take precautions to reduce your risk to exposure. The DuPage County Health Department, according to its website, has made four positive tests of mosquitoes infected with the West Nile virus so far this year, and Cook County has discovered 15 positive pools this year. The Will County Health Department last week in Bolingbrook collected its first batch of mosquitoes that tested positive for the virus. In 2014, there were 44 human cases of West Nile in Illinois, according to the Illinois Department of Health. There were three deaths, including one in DuPage County. Those figures are down from the 117 human cases and 11 deaths in 2013 and 290 human cases and 12 deaths in 2012. Human cases started to spike after only five were reported in 2009. In 2010, there were 61 human cases of West Nile virus, including four deaths. There were 34 human cases and three deaths in 2011. West Nile virus is most commonly spread by infected mosquitoes. It can cause fever, encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord). There are steps you can take to protect yourself from being bitten by a West Nile-infected mosquito. Follow these tips from the health department: • Wear shoes, socks, long-sleeved shirts and pants when outdoors for long periods of time or when mosquitoes are most active – usually dawn and dusk. • When possible, avoid the outdoors during peak biting times – dawn and dusk. • Spray clothing with insect repellent. • Apply insect repellent sparingly to exposed skin by following label directions. Some experts recommend lower concentra-

tions for children. Check with your doctor before applying insect repellent on infants, and wash your hands after using insect repellent. • Look for EPA-labeled products containing DEET, Picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR3535. It also is important to eliminate mosquito breeding sites from around your residence. Mosquito eggs can develop in any standing water that lasts more than five to seven days. Follow these health department tips: • Turn over children’s wading pools and toys when not in use. • Drill holes in the bottom of recycling and trash containers that are left outdoors. • Change water in birdbaths twice a week. • Fix leaky faucets. They provide water where mosquitoes can breed. • Drill holes in window boxes and flower planters to prevent water from pooling. • Aerate ornamental ponds or stock with mosquito-eating fish. • Keep pools clean and chlorinated. • Eliminate standing water in your property. Take proper precautions this summer to reduce your exposure to the West Nile virus.

I would like to thank the Pleasantdale Park District for another wonderful holiday fireworks display. And to the person who had to sing the national anthem with people screaming in between that person’s singing, and also shooting off fireworks while the person was singing, I find it very rude. It is not an easy song to sing, and anybody who starts screaming before the end of the national anthem has no respect for it. … And the people who I know did not have physical disabilities, especially the young children running around and teenagers. Stand up when the national anthem is played.

D-58 OKs preliminary budget By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – The Downers Grove Grade School District 58 Board of Education had a productive meeting July 13, addressing a proposed budget for the coming school year as well as technology upgrades. The board approved all items 5-0. Board members James Paul and Sallie Ann Lupescu were absent. The board greenlighted the district’s preliminary budget for the 201516 school year. According to board documents, the budget includes $63.8 million in revenue and $63.4 million in expenses. The 2014-15 budget contained $63.9 million in expenses and $62 million in revenue. The preliminary budget includes $38.5 million devoted to salaries, up from $37.6 million the previous year. District Controller Jim Popernik said the district anticipates being “very close” to even on expenses and revenue for 2015-16. However, it is still owed $1.4 million from the federal and state governments for the 2014-15 budget, he said. The federal funds should be sent soon, but the state money may not be available until August.

“We’ll get the money when the state has the money and distributes it,” Popernik said. Board members did not discuss the preliminary budget. The board will host a budget workshop meeting Aug. 24, as well as a public hearing on the budget at 7 p.m. Sept. 15 at the Longfellow Center, 1435 Prairie Ave., before giving final approval later in the year. The board also approved purchasing two technology upgrades. The first is a firewall upgrade, which will cost $52,828.80. According to board documents, the district’s wireless network was significantly stressed during the last school year, and the upgrade is needed to help with network traffic. The district will purchase a Dell SonicWALL Supermassive 9000, which will include a three-year software license. The board also approved spending $24,288 to purchase 352 Apple TVs, which will be used to display content from student devices. James Eichmiller, director of innovative technology and learning for the district, said the TVs will take some of the traffic off the wireless network, which will ease the congestion.

Continued from page 8 Commissioner Bill White said if Downers Grove decides to consider cutting programs, it’s important to make sure residents understand how they will be affected. Commissioner Gina Vattimo said the village needs to do whatever it can to grow revenues. “I’m OK with increasing property taxes for operation,” she said. Vattimo later contacted Suburban Life and said

she made the statement sarcastically. White also suggested the village urge the Economic Development Corp. to increase the sales tax base however possible. Fieldman said Downers Grove has undergone a 15-percent staff reduction over the past several years, and is not interested in cutting back more. The village went into a “crisis mode” during the recession in 2008, he said, making significant cuts to balance the budget. “This is not that same amount of urgency,” he said.

Veneers can improve the appearance of your teeth 15 SPONSORED BY

It’s nearly impossible to have perfect teeth without assistance from your dentist. Twice-yearly check-ups help keep teeth clean, and developing problems can be detected early and taken care of quickly and less expensively. While the shape and size of your teeth, and the existence of gaps, can be genetic, other issues can be the result of what you eat and drink, whether or not you grind your teeth, and how well and how often you clean them. Dental veneers, also referred to as porcelain veneers, are wafer-thin, custom-made shells of tooth-colored materials, according to www.webmd.com, that are designed to cover the front surface of teeth and improve their appearance. The shells are bonded to the front of the teeth, and can change their color, shape, size, and length. Veneers are a popular choice for patients looking to fix teeth discoloration,

or teeth that are worn down, chipped, or broken. Veneers can help close large gaps between teeth, and can also improve the appearance of teeth that are misaligned, misshapen, or uneven. The website states that dental veneers can be made from porcelain or from resin composite materials. While porcelain resists stains better than resin and offers better light-reflecting properties similar to those of natural teeth, resin veneers are thinner and require less removal of the tooth’s surface before the veneer is adhered. Veneers offer several advantages to patients; they are stain resistant and are well-tolerated by gum tissue. They offer a natural appearance to the teeth, and the color can be selected to best match a patient’s other teeth. They can also make dark teeth appear more white. Veneers require only minimal shaping, and may actually strengthen your natural teeth. For a total smile makeover, dental veneers may be the best, most natural-looking way to create a more beautiful smile. For more information about dental veneers, please contact:

COFFEE WITH THE COUNCIL Coffee With The Council of the Village of Downers Grove will be held at 9:00 a.m. at the Downtown Downers Grove Market at the Main Street Train Station on Saturday, July 18, 2015. The agenda for the meeting will be a forum for comments from community members.

MAPLE AVENUE RAILROAD CROSSING CLOSURE The BNSF will be working on switches at the Maple Avenue crossing in the next two weeks. These switches will improve service reliability and ride quality as well as reduce the noise from trains on the crossover. To safely complete this work the Maple Avenue crossing will be closed on 7/18, 7/19, 7/25, and 7/26 from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Parking will be limited in Lot I West to allow for equipment staging.

ELECTRONIC RECYCLING JULY 18, 2015 Electronic recycling is available through Downers Grove Township on the third Saturday of every month from 8 a.m. to noon (except holiday weekends) at 318 E. Quincy Street, Westmont. The next event will be July 18, 2015. Call 630-719-6625 for more information or visit www.dgtownship.com.

OVERNIGHT PARKING Overnight parking on Village streets between the hours of 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. is prohibited by Village ordinance. Residents with a need to park overnight on the street must obtain permission from the Police Department and should call the Village Operations Center (VOC) at 630-434-5600.

RX DRUG DISPOSAL PROGRAM The Downers Grove Police Department Prescription Drug Disposal Program provides residents with a way to safely dispose of old prescription medications. This program is by appointment only. To take advantage of this free service, contact the program coordinator for an appointment: Mary Wennerstrom Drug Disposal Coordinator (630)-434-5681 mwennerstrom@downers.us Residents who are unable to drop off their medications may request a Crime Prevention Officer to come to their home for collection. Improper disposal of medications can pollute drinking water with toxic chemicals. Storing unused medications can pose other safety issues. It is estimated that each day 2500 teenagers get high for the first time on unused drugs they find in medicine cabinets at home or at their grandparents’ homes. There are also incidents of accidental ingestion of these medications by children, the elderly, and pets. The medications will subsequently be disposed of using the protocols followed for disposing of drugs held in evidence. There is no charge for this service.

Overnight parking on Friday and Saturday nights on level 5 of the parking deck is possible by calling VOC at 630-434-5600 for permission.

FREE WOODCHIPS The Village has free woodchips available at a fenced pickup site located on the north side of Curtiss Street at the intersection of Katrine Street. The site is open from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., seven days a week. Residents are welcome to take the amounts they need using their own transport. Delivery is not available. Mulch, such as woodchips, can be applied any time of year. The size of the area to be mulched should be as large as practical with the mulch not more than 4 inches deep and not up against the tree trunk when mulching around trees. adno=S0253292

SPUDS

Spuds is a very friendly and playful guy, but may be too much for small children – he’d do best in an adult only home. He loves car rides and going for walks. He’s been living in a Temporary Care Home and has learned all his house manners. He’s very smart and is house-trained, crate-trained and knows the commands sit, stay, and wait. Once he has had fun playing and exercising, he loves to cuddle with his people. He likes to play with other dogs, but he needs a buddy that will match him in size and exuberance. Spuds’ family should understand canine communication and share their house rules with him. His adoption includes one free training session from Bark Busters so the family can be shown the training techniques Spuds has learned. He’s available by appointment only. Please call 630-378-4208 to set up a time to meet this great dog.

GAME REPORT CHICAGO RED STARS AT HOUSTON DASH SUN. JULY 12

Red Stars Reclaim First Place with 2-1 Road Win at Houston Houston, TX. – The Chicago Red Stars earned yet another away win on Sunday night and reclaimed the top spot in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) standings, defeating hosts Houston Dash 2-1 behind goals by Vanessa DiBernardo before the break and Jen Hoy after the break. Houston’s Tiffany McCarty temporarily leveled the score early in the second period. While the Red Stars had several half-chances in the opening stages of the match, the Dash nearly took the lead at the other end, as Ohai’s low centering ball from the right found a wide open McCarty and the attacker’s mishit shot made for a comfortable save by goalkeeper Michele Dalton. Houston had another close look just after the quarter-hour mark, Rachael Axon creating havoc with a cross from the left and Jessica McDonald failing to make contact with the ball at the doorstep. Chicago would grab the lead in the 19th minute. Alyssa Mautz’s excellent service from the right picked out Vanessa DiBernardo in the center of the area and the midfielder found the net with a clinical finish. The visitors could have doubled their advantage seven minutes later, Arin Gilliland’s outstanding work on the left begging for the centering pass to be tapped home from close range, only for the well-positioned Mautz to go down under a Camila challenge that was judged to have been fair by referee Chris Spivey. The Dash nearly punished their opponents for the missed opportunity late in the half, as Melissa Henderson came close to reaching Ella Masar’s low cross from the right before a deflection on the subsequent redirect by McDonald’s made for a comfortable save by goalkeeper Michele Dalton. Well inside first-half stoppage time, Sofia Huerta had a chance to add a second for the Red Stars on a one-on-one with McLeod, but she failed to take

advantage of Jen Hoy’s through ball by firing wide of the frame. After the interval, Chicago picked up right where it had left off, the ball falling right into the pass of Mautz, whose effort from 23 yards out sent it skimming off the bar. However, it would be the Dash finding the net three minutes from the hour mark, as Dalton was unable to get her fists on an Ohai cross from the right and McCarty nodded into the empty goal from the far post. Chicago outside back Gilliland continued to be a nuisance to the Houston defense, again pushing up the left in the 60th minute and making her way to the byline before picking out Huerta at the near post. The rookie forward did well to turn and release a powerful right-footed shot that whizzed just past the upright. Strike partner Hoy would aim perfectly moments later, as she received the ball at the top of the box courtesy of a Rachel Quon header and opted for a wicked half-volley that left McLeod without a chance on its way inside the right post. Down 2-1, the Dash attempted to create quality chances during the remainder of the game, but instead it was the road team that came close to scoring again when Gilliland’s long-range rocket twelve minutes from full time whistled inches wide of the left upright. It would be the day’s final noteworthy action, as the Red Stars put on a clinic in managing a late lead and held on for all three points. The NWSL leaders will honor all eight of their World Cup participants, including their U.S. quartet, ahead of the official “Welcome Home Game” against Boston Breakers on July 18, which will also serve as the club’s 2015 Pride Night. Single-game and season tickets for the 2015 Red Stars campaign may be purchased by calling 773-698-6001 or by visiting www. chicagoredstars.com.

It’s a great guide and choosing a glass this way only enhances the culinary experience. The extensive menu tempts with seafood, chops, pasta, sandwiches, salads, a calorie-conscious collection and gluten-free dishes. At Cooper’s Hawk, the desserts are as homespun and classic as the dishes themselves. The chocolate cake, filled with layers of chocolate mousse and ganache, was outstanding – a decadent treat without the heaviness some full-size desserts impart. The crumbled apple pie was not a slice, but rather a whole personal pie, capped with a flourish of crust and drizzled caramel sauce. Both dishes were served with vanilla ice cream, and definitely sized to share. All in all, this was a wonderful lunch filled with deliciously satisfying food and great wine. I noticed an extensive children’s menu that offered classic kid fare, but also some alternatives to the typical chicken fingers and pizza that were clever, but no less approachable for the young ones – chicken pot stickers, pasta with homemade meatballs,

BURR RIDGE – Lunch at Cooper’s Hawk? As a wine lover, it wasn’t hard to convince me. Cooper’s Hawk Winery and Restaurant has become known for its wide selection of wines and its carefully paired menu of modern American comfort food. On a particularly lovely afternoon, I set out with a friend to the location in the Burr Ridge Village Center, and opted for a table on the patio. I ordered a glass of the housemade sangria, a delicious wine punch loaded with fresh fruit and served chilled, perfect for the sunny summer day. My companion chose an equally summery peach wine, which she described as fresh and light – sweet, but not syrupy. It is one of a variety of fruit wines produced by Cooper’s Hawk. We whet our appetites with a starter of Mexican Drunken Shrimp, which were wrapped in bacon and served with fresh guacamole and a butter sauce laced with lime and tequila. The guacamole took center stage, fresh and delicious, pairing well with the saltiness of the crisp bacon. We shared two entrees, opting for beef and chicken. The Chicken Giardiniera was lightly breaded with panko crumbs and Parmesan, and its crispiness held up well to the vinegars and oils of the fresh giardiniera that topped it. The flavors were lovely, not too spicy, and the thought occurred that this combination would make a delightful sandwich. The Short Rib Risotto was a satisfying combination of creamy carnaroli rice, tender boneless short ribs and a rich and flavorful wine sauce melding mushrooms, sweet onions, shaved Parmesan and white truffle oil. I’m a sucker for any roast meat with the perfect sauce, and this certainly fit the bill. A sublime comfort food, it almost made me hope for fall weather. I should mention that every single item on the Coo-

DGS focusing on fundamentals Mustangs get back to basics with summer season games By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Darren Orel likes to keep things simple, especially in the summer. With players coming and going – elite players often are jetting around the country to compete in elite travel tournaments – the Downers Grove South baseball coach sticks to the basics in the summer, even more so when the majority of players suiting up for the Mustangs are new to the varsity experience. “We have a lot of guys [out of state] so you have a lot of new faces and some younger kids,” Orel said. “We had a couple seniors [against Lyons Township on July 8], but then it was a lot of freshmen who are going to be sophomores and sophomores who are going to be juniors, so it’s a little different feel.” With so many players Orel has never directly coached seeing action in the summer, the strict fundamentals – getting down bunts, hitting the cut off man, making the correct plays – are emphasized more than wins and losses. “A lot of fundamental things, the little things we like to emphasize and work on, things that maybe didn’t happen as much on the lower levels or things that need to be cleaned up a little bit,” Orel said. The summer is kind of an audition for positions, especially pitcher. Orel tries to set a rotation the best he can and lets several players toe the rubber just to see what skills they possess. “Matt Channell, he was a backup infielder for us last year and he’s never pitched before in a high

A guy like Zack Jones, I’ll tell him, ‘You’re going to pitch Tuesdays,’ and for him it’s one or two innings. … I’m not going to ask him to come out and throw 50, 60, 70 pitches. and he’s done that. Ty McCulloch, same thing.” Though several players are pulled away from South’s team to compete in travel ball, Orel said there has been a core group present for all of the games. Over the course of the summer season he has seen them make strides. While the coaching staff doesn’t track stats in a scorebook, Orel does take notes on each player so the Mustangs can hit the ground

running when the spring season gets started. “We’ll take notes on everybody,” the coach said. “I keep a card and jot down things about everybody because [the coaches] will have meetings at the end of the summer and talk about where everybody is. It’s kind of like a tryout for some of these guys, as opposed to the week you get inside in March before the season.”

Dallton Baran delivers a pitch July 8 in a game against Metea Valley. The Downers Grove North senior has seen action at pitcher and shortstop for the Trojans this summer. Isaacson said that between now and spring practices, and even after spring practices start, things can and will change. Players will change positions and spots in the batting order, but the summer is key as the Trojans look to build for next season. “It is a process. We talk about it being a process with our guys all the time and this is the start of the process. It’s giving us an idea,” the coach said. “The kids have been good. They’ve been responsive to what we’ve been doing. ... The intro has been installed and now they have an idea of some of the expectations.”

Downers Grove Dragons baseball team brings home tournament title SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA DOWNERS GROVE – A late rally helped propel the Downers Grove Dragons 11U baseball team to the title at the Lisle Summer Slam tournament July 12. The Dragons topped the Clarendon Hills Cardinals 8-7 in the championship game, taking the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning and closing out the game in the top of the seventh.

It was the second tournament title of the summer for the Dragons. Dragons players this summer included Max Babich, Jacob Baldwin, Ryan Evans, Eliot Fulscher, Nick Guth, Ned Kalata, Ben Romenesko, Will Ruddy, Emmitt Thulin, Alex White, Erik Youngberg and Jack Zizek. The team is coached by Scott Sobkowiak, Mike Ruddy and Tony White, and the team’s batboy is James Sobkowiak.

summer also is providing a chance for a new crop of leaders to emerge and the team to start developing chemistry. Baran likely will be one of those leaders, and he has seen the chemistry improve over the course of the summer. “We’re definitely young and inexperienced right now, but we’ll get in the hang of it,” Baran said. “There’s definitely a lot more chemistry now. From the start [of the summer] to this past week, it’s been a crazy transition how much we’re getting along with each other, just joking around and being fun with each other.”

DOWNERS GROVE – Kendall Gretsch has come a long way since competing for Downers Grove North’s swim team. The latest in a string of notable accomplishments was her nomination for an ESPY Award in the category of Best Female Athlete with a Disability. Now an elite triathlete, Gretsch has won all five competitions she has entered, including a winning time of 1:21:32 at the International Triathlon Union World Triathlon Grand Final in Edmonton in August 2014 and the title at the 2015 Monterrey CAMTRI Triathlon American Championships in May. She will compete in the ITU World Triathlon Grand Final in Chicago on Sept. 18. Now a resident of Madison, Wis., Gretsch gained some notoriety before entering the triathlon circuit. While a senior at Washington University in St. Louis, Gretsch was part of a group of biomedical engineering students who used a 3-D printer to create a prosthetic limb for a teenage girl who lost her arm in an accident. The 2015 ESPY Awards show airs at 7 p.m. July 15 on ABC.

DOWNERS GROVE – When Dallton Baran stepped on the mound July 8, it was a bit of a change. The Downers Grove North seniorto-be is typically an infielder for the Trojans, and even some of the games during the summer season in which he has played infield have required some adjustments. “Transitioning from third base to shortstop is a little bit of a change, but I’ve played [shortstop] most of my life so I’m getting back into it,” Baran said. Playing different players at different positions is just one aspect of the summer baseball season. For North, which saw 13 seniors from the spring team graduate, just getting used to life at the varsity level is a major goal. “Some of the things we do, picking up some of our routines, it’s an intro and you’re teaching some of these things on the fly,” head coach Chad Isaacson said. “I’ve not been displeased with the progress, but we have a long way to go. It is going to be a younger team for us. We only have six guys from this past spring that are going to be with us, so there’s going to be a learning curve.” One of the areas where graduation greatly affected the Trojans was on the mound. Ryan Cantlin is the only pitcher who threw double-digit innings in the spring who is expected to return for the 2016 season. Senior Tim Brown and juniors James Krick, Tyler Rosen and Nick Taviani pitched only limited innings in the spring. Getting the first glimpses of a pitching staff has been one of the main objectives for Isaacson. “The biggest thing is figuring out our mound components, and I like some of our options,” the coach said. In addition to figuring out which pieces might fit where positionally, the
