A hub for community connections Typically, a chamber of commerce works to ensure the prosperity of local businesses. Most chambers are dedicated to networking their members and creating promotions that bring in shoppers. By D.M. Herra

THE GENOA AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE IS A LITTLE DIFFERENT. “The chamber is different because Genoa is different,” Executive Director Cortney Strohacker said. “We do a lot of community support that is not just business based. I look at us as being a hub, a connection between residents, businesses, the fire department, the police department, the parks, the city – people come here for all things Genoa.” The chamber is a small but mighty powerhouse, run by a staff of one and a half – Strohacker and Associate Director Krissy Johnson – with support from interns from Genoa-Kingston High School. The chamber is operated by a volunteer board and supported by an Ambassador Club.

“Our role is to make Genoa economically sound, successful and supported,” Strohacker said. “We want to make sure Genoa is a place you want to live, work and play.”
HOW THE CHAMBER BENEFITS BUSINESSES
At the time of this writing, the chamber had 176 members. There are benefits to belonging to such a small group; while every member receives the same basic benefits, Genoa is able to offer tailored benefits that would be impossible for a larger chamber. “Each member is super unique,” Strohacker said. “Lloyd Landscaping might need some kind of support that Custom Aluminum does not need. We ask each partner what they need and how we can partner.” Sometimes that means connecting members who can mutually benefit one another. Other times it means structuring an event to make it easy for businesses to participate. When a new Mexican restaurant opened, the chamber selected Disney’s “Coco” for its already-scheduled outdoor movie and turned the evening into a culturally themed event. When a hair salon told Strohacker it wanted to

become more involved, she suggested it participate in a free showing of “Frozen” by offering “Frozen” hair makeovers. “We look at the uniqueness of each member and think of ways we can partner with them,” Strohacker said. “It’s easy to do here because our membership is so invested.” The chamber also recognizes the many challenges of running a small business. A person might be incredibly gifted at their business’ core service, Strohacker said, but without business savvy like how to handle taxes and payroll, they can quickly find themselves in over their heads. “Cortney and the chamber have been very supportive of our Main Street businesses,” said Rick Mamoser, owner of Prairie State Winery. “I’m certain we would not be as successful if it wasn’t for an active and proactive chamber focusing attention and driving business to our small downtown.” The chamber brings in as many resources as possible, partnering with the Illinois Small Business Development Center at Waubonsee Community College, working with the DeKalb County Economic Development Corporation, and facilitating relationships with Northern
Illinois University and Kishwaukee College. “Whether they need help with taxes, marketing, getting through procurement, small business financials, whatever, we’re there to put our arms around them and support them however we can,” Strohacker said.
A RESOURCE FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT
Not all of the chamber’s partners are for-profit businesses. The chamber also has strong partnerships with city departments, Genoa-Kingston schools and the Genoa Township Park District. “We help the fire department as much as we can with Genoa Days, and they help us with bringing Santa to town,” Strohacker said. “The police auxiliary is amazing. They’re our crossing guards at every event. The city’s public works department is outstanding. People have no idea what goes into pulling off some of these events, the partnership and cooperation involved.” Partnerships are easy in a small town, Strohacker said, where all entities are working from small budgets and staff and rely on one another to help fill the gaps.

For example, when the police department wanted to raise money for cancer research by participating in No Shave November, they approached Strohacker for help with marketing and raising awareness of the fundraiser. When heavy rain the week before the chamber’s Volksfest threatened to put the festival on soggy ground, Genoa Public Works staff pumped out water and laid down fresh gravel to help make sure the event ran smoothly. “That’s part of what is great about a small town,” Strohacker said. “Everyone works together.”
MAKING GENOA A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE AND PLAY
Residents and visitors also benefit from the chamber’s activities, even if they don’t realize it. The chamber sends out welcome packets to new residents, including local menus, coupons and information about the city. It also acts as a de facto visitor’s bureau, sharing information about local attractions.
“Part of the Genoa chamber’s purpose is to advance the general welfare of both the citizens and businesses of Genoa and to help see that they prosper,” said Chamber President Pattie Marx.

The chamber is the engine running a number of beloved events, including the Cruisin’ to Genoa car show, the Great Genoa Duck Race and the Celebrate the Season holiday parade. One of Strohacker’s favorites is the Home and Business Expo. The expo is typically scheduled in March, offering residents feeling cooped up at the end of an Illinois winter a respite from their cabin fever. While many business expos are essentially business networking events, the Genoa expo is aimed at the community. “Everything is under one roof for one day, and it’s a great chance for people to discover businesses they didn’t even know existed,” Strohacker said. “We have over 1,000 people come out to explore and have fun each year.” The farmer’s market is another chamber event with a uniquely Genoa twist. Knowing the community couldn’t support a weekly market, the chamber scheduled its market just once a month, on the fourth Saturday of May, June, July, August and September. The monthly market is not just a place to buy local produce – with live music, activities and animal exhibits by wildlife education programs, it is an all-day event.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR GENOA?
The nationwide shift in consumer buying habits has been well documented, with shoppers abandoning brick-and-mortar stores to buy online. It’s gotten harder for small retailers to make it, Strohacker said, opening the door for expansion of experience-oriented businesses. “There’s been a huge shift toward entertainment places,” she said. “You can’t have drinks with friends online. Genoa has really wrapped its arms around that, with a number of restaurants, bars, a winery, and live music at multiple locations every weekend.” The chamber plans to continue exploring ways to use Genoa’s unique resources to bring people to town. The Kishwaukee River, for example, has provided a venue not just for the annual Great Genoa Duck Race; last year nearly 300 boaters came to the city to participate in a kayaking event. “We’re working hard to make Genoa a destination location,” Strohacker said. “We’re giving people who live here a reason to love being here and people who don’t live here a reason to come visit.”

FROM BARN SALVAGE TO EVENT VENUE The Evolution of Lloyd Landscaping and Old Barn Salvage By D.M. Herra
Nature is all about evolution – plant a garden and as it grows it will change, season to season, eventually becoming something very different than the patch of land where it began. Bill and Mary Lloyd, owners of Lloyd Landscaping, have embraced that motif of change. When the Lloyds purchased a building and land on Genoa’s west side. Weeds grew six feet high, obscuring piles of trash. More than a hundred scraggly saplings grew at random intervals, perhaps survivors of a squirrel’s forgotten hoard. The building, originally built as a car dealership that had been remade for a variety of industrial uses, was a blank slate.

The Lloyds set about turning the building into a rustic garden center, where potted plants and garden accessories are displayed against a backdrop of vintage farmhouse charm. One side of the building houses piles of salvaged barn wood available for purchase, along with other salvaged treasures like doors and windows from demolished mansions of past eras.
“Even when it was still junky out here people started asking if they could get married here,” Mary Lloyd said.
EVOLVING SPACE
Far from utilitarian aisles of plants for sale, the garden center has all the rustic charm fans of Joanna Gaines dream about – a small wire silo is reflected in a stone-lined pond, an artfully shabby shed is nestled into a rose garden, and an old scoop from an earthmoving machine has found new life as a photo-worthy swing.

“The Lloyds have been an amazing asset to Genoa,” said Cortney Strohacker, executive director of the Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce. “Everything they do has a touch of cool. And a banquet center – what a huge need for Genoa.”

wedding receptions and large parties, Strohacker said. When people come to the chamber asking where they can host an event, there simply are no options. Bill Lloyd said they worked with the city of Genoa to do a feasibility study on the market for event space and “all the numbers look great.” Lloyd Landscaping has already hosted small events like chamber lunches in a backroom space, but the Lloyds have something much bigger in mind. “Mary came up with the idea (of creating an event space),” Bill Lloyd said. “I bought into it right away. We’ve always been about evolving and taking the next step.” At first, the couple talked about building a barn-like structure to host events. But when they sketched out everything they would need, they realized the project was far outside a realistic budget. In addition, Bill Lloyd said, a number of other entrepreneurs seemed to have the same idea at the same time. Instead, they determined they would do major renovations to their existing building to create an event hall that can accommodate up to 250 people. “The day we bought this we thought it would eventually be kind of a cool event space,” Bill Lloyd said. As he walks through the section of the building that houses Old Barn Salvage,

it is clear that Lloyd can see the new space in his mind as he gestures and talks about taking down a wall here and adding one there. Original barrel ceilings with exposed beams will stay, he says, with vintage-looking light fixtures. A prep kitchen will give caterers a place to work on site. A liquor license has already been secured, and a shabby-chic bar embellished with salvaged wood and an automobile grille takes up one corner.

The Lloyds hope to break ground on the renovations in 2019, though with their liquor license secured they can already host small events. Last year, Bill Lloyd paved a 1,700-square-foot patio for outdoor events behind the building. The patio, beneath a pergola with a vintage chandelier, was designed with weddings in mind – a heart shape is laid out in the paver bricks, and a long, paved aisle stretches out to the patio from an iron archway where a bride can begin her procession.
“We’re a good team,” Bill Lloyd said. “Everything here we made. We’re having fun doing it.”
EVOLVING CAREERS
The Lloyds are also looking forward to working together more. When his business was purely landscaping, Lloyd said, he ran every aspect of the business. When they opened Old Barn Salvage and the garden center, Mary Lloyd began doing all of the bookkeeping even as she continued in her nursing career.
Mary Lloyd said cutting their teeth on small events is getting the couple ready for hosting larger events once the renovations are complete. “It’s been good for us to get some small events going. It’s not like a wedding would be the very first event we ever planned,” she said. “Plus, we have a lot of contacts who know what they’re doing and we’re hiring people who know what they’re doing.”
Bill Lloyd has been a landscaper since 1983, running his own business since 1994. Mary Lloyd has spent her entire career as a nurse practitioner. But the two have no qualms about adding event planner to their resume.
With construction timelines notoriously difficult to pin down, the estimated open date for the event space is still up in the air. But whenever it happens, Strohacker said, there will likely be a line of people clamoring to use it.
“We’re super excited,” Bill Lloyd said. “We both like to be creative and we both like to be around happy people. We know it will be hard work, but hopefully not as physically demanding as what

This season, Beth Fowler celebrates an anniversary trifecta. It is the 35th anniversary of her celebrated Genoa dance studio, the Beth Fowler School of Dance. It is the 25th anniversary of her preprofessional dance company, the Beth Fowler Dance Company. And it was the 25th anniversary of her dance company’s first performance of “The Nutcracker,” a local holiday tradition.

“People started coming to me when I was 13 asking if I could teach their daughters to dance,” she said. “I literally started teaching out of my parents’ basement when I was in junior high.”
For 15 years, Fowler was content to run the single location, but in 2009 she felt the urge to expand again. This time her second location was in St. Charles. In 2015, she bought a building the same size to her Genoa studio and moved the St. Charles location out of its rented digs and into its new home.
In 1983, when she was 15, one of Fowler’s teachers recommended she advertise the dance lessons in the newspaper, and the Beth Fowler School of Dance became official.
“Beth is a staple of Genoa,” said Cortney Strohacker, executive director of the Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce. “Probably half the kids in Genoa have taken a lesson from Beth Fowler at some point.”
Ten years later the business experienced a growth spurt. In 1993, 25-year-old Fowler opened a second location in Sycamore and launched the Beth Fowler Dance Company. In 1994, she opened a third studio, this time in Marengo.
LIVING A LIFE IN DANCE
“I ran the three locations for three years,” Fowler recalled. “I was 28 and I had three small children – every time we opened a new location I had another

“Now we own both buildings and we’re done expanding,” Fowler pledged. “We’re done moving. We’re definitely committed to these two communities for life.”
DANCING THROUGH GENERATIONS
For Fowler, 50, a lifetime commitment to a community seems only natural. A Genoa native, she has watched generations of dancers grow up around her. Thirty-five years after first

advertising her dance lessons, Fowler now teaches the children of her former students.
That revelation led to another Beth Fowler first: an alumni performance of the classic holiday ballet.
Last year, she recognized that a new student had the same last name as a former student.
LESSONS THAT LAST A LIFETIME
“I asked if that was her mother and she said no, it was her grandmother,” Fowler said. “Three generations of this family have learned to dance at this studio.” Last winter, the Beth Fowler Dance Company celebrated its 25th production of “The Nutcracker.” As they readied the production, Fowler said, the technical crew kept talking about new props that would be needed, new scenery, new special effects in celebration of the 25th anniversary. “All I kept thinking about was how none of that mattered to me,” Fowler said. “Yes we will add all that, but what matters to me is the people I have shared this with over the last 25 years.”
Fowler keeps in touch with many of her former students – even when she’s not teaching their children. Some have gone on to have careers in dance, others no longer dance but still practice the life lessons dance taught them – discipline, persistence and determination time management. Fowler’s teaching philosophy is that children are motivated when the goal they are working toward is clearly defined. All of the dance classes participate in “The Nutcracker” in different roles. Each year, as the dancers progress to another level, they also progress to a new role. “They can see very clearly where they are and where they are going next,” she
said. “That’s a huge motivator for kids, to see what their next step will look like. I think that’s why the program has had the longevity it has.” Consistency is also key to the dance school’s enduring popularity, even in St. Charles, a city saturated with dance studios. All of the instructors in the Beth Fowler School of Dance are former students of the school, offering a level of stability that many similar businesses cannot match. “Parents will tell me how great it is that their students can form a bond with their instructors, because at so many other studios there’s a revolving door of teachers,” Fowler said. “It’s also great for me; I know what’s being taught at each level because I taught (the teachers).” The consistency and longevity of the studio staff also helps the students as they progress through the levels, Fowler said. means the teachers are all on the same page; each one knows how she must prepare her students for the expectations of the next teacher up the line.
THE JOURNEY IS AS IMPORTANT AS THE DESTINATION
Fowler and her team of instructors teach children as young as three all the way up to adults ready to begin their dancing careers. No matter what level a student dances, every milestone is equally exciting, Fowler said. “I get so excited when a three-year-old learns how to skip,” she said. “Every level has different successes, and we love to celebrate them all. Watching a three-yearold skip for the first time is as exciting as watching an advanced student perform 32 fouette turns on pointe.” “When you watch someone grow up from the age of 3, you become part of their family,” she continued. “We have a very strong dance family. Some of them call me Mom. I’ve watched them grow up and they all feel like my children. There is a very strong family bond that runs through our studio.”

Even in a quiet year, there’s lots to talk about in the Genoa Township Park District. In 2018, the district received a six-figure grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources that it used to expand and improve facilities at its flagship park, Chamberlain Park.
SKATE PARK RENOVATIONS
The bulk of the grant was used to renovate Genoa’s nearly 20-year-old skate park to make it safer and more exciting for skaters. The district repaved the surface, stripped down and rebuilt existing features and added new features. “We worked with Fargo Skateboarding in DeKalb on the renovations,” park district Executive Director Paul Bafia said. “When we finished, we had an open house in conjunction with them, and we had skaters come from all over northern Illinois, from Harvard all the way down to Sandwich. A lot of those skaters are still coming back.”

Twenty years ago, skate parks were a hot feature in park districts, but today many districts are removing the facilities from their parks, Bafia said. That leaves skaters with fewer locations to practice their sport. The Genoa facility has been consistently popular, and Bafia said by and large the skaters using the park are respectful and appreciative. “It’s kind of fun going out and watching them skate, and if you do, you can see the skaters self-police,” Bafia said. “They know this is new and we spent a lot of money on it. If someone is acting disrespectful or doing something that could cause some damage the other skaters are telling him to stop it. It’s been great for Genoa.”

The district also added a sand volleyball court, a bocce ball court, permanent bags sets and a gaga ball court. “Gaga ball is kind of like dodgeball in a corral,” Bafia said. “I saw it at a park district conference I went to. It sounds kind of goofy, but the kids have a lot of fun with it. The summer camp kids were playing it last summer and having a lot of fun.” In gaga ball, players in an octagonal pit try to hit opponents below the knees with a soft foam ball. After a few minutes, a second ball is added, so rounds typically end in about five minutes. The last player standing wins, then everyone is back in the pit for the next round. The game is thought to have originated in Israel and has been around since the 1970s, though its popularity in the last three years has soared.
The rules of gaga ball are posted on the outside of the park district’s pit. “The only thing is, I wish I had gone with a bigger pit,” Bafia said. “It sounded like it would be big enough, but once you get the kids in there running around it seems full really quick.”
LOTS TO DO
Looking ahead, the park district is planning some new events for 2019, Bafia said, though dates and details had not been finalized as of this writing. The district chipped in with park districts in DeKalb, Sycamore and Sandwich to buy an inflatable movie screen, so outdoor movies in the park are likely to happen sometime during the summer, he said. The movie will likely be the finale to a full day of activities to draw families to the park.
In another section of the park, concrete cornhole boards created by Doty Concrete of Sycamore provide a permanent spot for residents and visitors to play a game of bags. The boards are near the new bocce ball court – for the uninitiated, bocce is a game of strategy also called lawn bowling. Rules for the game are posted next to the court, and equipment can be checked out from the district office.
The number of participants in the park district’s after school program and summer camp program hit record highs in 2018, Bafia said, with no signs of slowing down this year.
“The new games have gone over pretty well,” Bafia said. “Bocce ball and gaga ball are examples of some features not typical to park districts.”
“Obviously parents want a safe place for their kids to go where they’ll be entertained and have a good time but they’ll also be active,” Bafia said. “Parents

FEELING FIT
Construction plans for 2019 include expanding the fitness center, which Strohacker calls “the best kept secret in Genoa that shouldn’t be a secret.” “The fitness center is amazing. I’m there almost every day,” she said. “But there are still people who don’t even know we have a fitness center. They have spin classes, they have yoga, they have a kid zone – they have everything.” Neighboring tenants in the city-owned building that houses the fitness center moved out, Bafia said, so the park district is expanding into the vacated space. The expansion will add more than 1,000 square feet to the free weight area, which users have complained in the past is too small. The district also plans to replace some cardio equipment in the fitness center that is nearing the end of its useful life. Bafia expects to see some growth in senior membership at the fitness center this year, as midway through 2018 the district was accepted into the nationwide Silver Sneakers program. The program makes it possible for people 65 and older to join the fitness center and take some group classes for free by covering their costs. “It took a year and a half from the time we applied until we received the Silver Sneakers designation,” Bafia said. “We feel really honored to have been awarded participation in the program, and it has really helped increase our senior membership and participation.”
