ON THE COVER Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley speaks at the Dec. 19 groundbreaking for the Addison Avenue Parking Deck in Elmhurst. Mark Busch – mbusch@shawmedia.com
Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley (center) says a few words Dec. 19 after he and other officials broke ground for the Addison Avenue Parking Deck in downtown Elmhurst.
Elmhurst takes next step for downtown parking deck SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA ELMHURST – Elmhurst’s Addison Avenue Parking Deck project officially broke ground Dec. 19. More than five years after the city began considering the project, the Elmhurst City Council approved the six-story, 65-foot building in 2014. “This is one of the biggest decisions that we’re going to have to make at this council level for a long time,” Seventh Ward alderman and Development, Planning and Zoning committee member Mark Mulliner said at an April meeting. On May 19, the council approved an ordinance granting a conditional-use permit and associated variations for the
“This is one of the biggest decisions that we’re going to have to make at this council level for a long time.” Mark Mulliner Development, Planning and Zoning committee member redevelopment of 135-149 N. Addison Ave. for a mixed-use development, which includes 16,000 square feet of retail space and a 690-space public parking facility. The structure will include five stories of public parking above a first floor of retail space in downtown Elmhurst. Despite controversy surrounding the height of the parking deck, the City Council denied a request to put the project to referendum, since
the project was already so far along and the referendum would only be advisory. The project split residents and business owners, who shared concerns that the height of the structure went against Elmhurst’s comprehensive downtown plan, which states two- to four-story buildings should continue to predominate the area. However, supporters focused on the promise of attracting and retaining busi-
ness and increasing available parking for consumers and workers in downtown Elmhurst. Open houses regarding GMA Architects’ design for the Addison Avenue Parking Deck were held in the summer to gather input from residents. Architects explored giving the building a prairie-style design similar to that of Elmhurst Memorial Hospital before deciding that look didn’t necessarily fit into the fabric of downtown. At the hearings, the architectural team presented community members with three potential designs for the building. The project is expected to be completed in the fall.

Ringing in the new year
Check out stories to follow in new year By MARI GRIGALIUNAS editorial@mysuburbanlife.com ELMHURST – Before even crossing off a day on the new 2015 calendar, there are already plenty of stories brewing in Elmhurst. In addition to the downtown parking deck construction (page 2), here are the headlines to watch for in the new year.
1. Stormwater saga What we know: The city, Elmhurst Park District and School District 205 continue to work on joint projects intended to mitigate overland flooding. The Park Board approved two alternative plans for Golden Meadows Park and York Commons – a project that split residents. The District 205 board agreed to continue working with the city to come up with an agreement for the proposed projects at Madison Early Childhood Education Center and Bryan Middle School.

hurst Historical museum will open a brand new exhibit exploring the history of Elmhurst. The new exhibit, “By All Accounts: The Story of Elmhurst,” will use creative technology as well as genuine artifacts to tell stories of Elmhurst’s past. The product of a two-year Elmhurst Historical Foundation campaign called Visionary Voices with a goal of raising $300,000, the new permanent exhibit will replace the former Elmhurst exhibit on the museum’s second floor. Through technology, visitors will be invited to explore areas that interest them more through apps. What’s next: The exhibit is scheduled to open Feb. 28. The museum’s director, Brian Bergheger, said he hopes visitors leave with a sense of Elmhurst that goes beyond names and dates, but gives them insight into Elmhurst’s defining characteristics that unite the community. Quote of note: “Our future plans are so that our museum will live in the world.” Curator of exhibits Lance Tawzer

FOCUS ON ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE One often overlooked way that athletes can enhance their performance is to improve the various aspects of vision that are required to be successful in their sport. One possible area for improvement is “focus flexibility,” the ability to change focus from a faraway object to a near one, or vice versa. Another is “peripheral awareness,” which is the ability to perceive what is going on at either side without turning the head. “Dynamic visual acuity” is the ability to see objects clearly when the person is moving quickly, and “depth perception” involves making spatial judgments, including how far away an object or person is from someone. Maximizing these vision sport skills can result in significant on-field and on-court improvements.
Roman Catholic The Perpetual Adoration Chapel of Our Lady-Mother of Eucharist is available 24 hours a day for private prayer and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, exposed on the Altar.
Methods of improving sports vision skills for optimum athletic performance will vary, depending on your sport. An eye doctor who specializes in sports vision can give you valuable advice about special eyewear such as sports safety goggles and performance enhancing lens tints. Two percent of participants gave a bottom-box response in the December survey. When asked if they felt it was important to offer bachelor’s degrees in fields where job opportunities exist, 76 percent in December gave a topbox response and 8 percent gave a bottom-box response. Other takeaways from the recent survey include: • Agreement that College of DuPage has an excellent academic reputation: 70 percent top-box response and 2 percent bottom-box response • The portion of the tax bill that goes to the college – less than 4 percent – is reasonable given the programs offered by the college: 66 percent top-box
response and 9 percent bottom-box response • The college should have nine to 18 months worth of reserves to operate should a revenue interruption occur: 64 percent top-box response and 36 percent bottom-box response. College of DuPage was fourth on a list of 10 colleges and universities when respondents were asked to name higher education institutions in Illinois. The three above College of DuPage were the University of Illinois at Chicago, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Northern Illinois University. The school was the third most frequent response when
people were asked what university or college they would like to attend. Saltz said the 2013 survey included questions similar to the one in December, but the questions weren’t worded exactly the same way. Trustee Kathy Hamilton said she has a “wholesale rejection” of the analysis because differently-worded questions were used in the two surveys. “For me, when I look at that divergent, I really find that difficult to believe,” she said. Saltz said he wouldn’t discount the data because of the slight change in wording. “You can’t discount the fact that these are dramatically improved numbers,” he said.

GLEN ELLYN – The College of DuPage reviewed the results of a community survey at its Board of Trustees meeting Dec. 18. The survey was performed by Comiskey Research, a marketing and data research firm in Elmhurst. It is expected to cost the college $8,600. Comiskey President Sigmund Saltz said the results showed “impressive numbers.” The survey was conducted in December via telephone with 400 District 502 residents. Questions were asked on a seven-point scale. Saltz said those answering
with a six or seven indicated strong agreement, or a “topbox response rate.” Anyone answering with a one or two demonstrated opposition, or a “bottom-box response rate.” Eighty-two percent gave a top-box response when asked if the college’s tuition was a good value, compared to 2 percent giving a bottom-box response. Top-box responses on the subject increased from 46 percent in a similar survey conducted by Comiskey on the college’s behalf in March 2013. The school was perceived to have a positive image by 73 percent of those surveyed in December, who gave a top-box response – an increase from 58 percent in the 2013 survey.

‘There is one less family that is homeless’ This year was an exciting year for DuPagePads, as 392 people obtained permanent housing, 145,501 meals were served, 44,284 nights of shelter were provided and 1,360 individuals were assisted, including 241 children in 144 families. One of these families was Angel’s, and she shares her journey below. “With nowhere to go, my children and I walked to COMMUNITY DuPagePads. With a lump in VOICE my throat, tears in my eyes Carol and my pride in my purse, I Simler told them, ‘I need help.’” Myriad challenges led Angel to this point. She had been through an abusive marriage, suffered health complications, lost her $42,000-a-year job and no longer had a place to call home for her and her children. Angel describes her life at that time as being, “downright depressing!” Angel said the staff at DuPagePads offered her a helping hand. “They were there to root for me – that type of cheering section helps you face your giants.” In February 2012, Angel moved into her own apartment. “My case manager greeted us at the door and said, ‘welcome home.’” Tears welled in Angel’s eyes as she looked around her furnished apartment. “There were bags and bags. They had taken care of every detail, from light bulbs to dishes and everything in between.” Angel and her children had been doing well until this summer when Angel faced immense pain, which called for an emergency room visit and immediate surgery. Her son, who had accompanied her in the ambulance, was told by the doctor he could not stay overnight. “I was hysterical and with no relatives to call, I contacted my DuPagePads case manager.” Angel’s case manager showed up to the hospital at 4:30 a.m. to pick up her son. Following the surgery, she brought Angel’s children back to visit her and assured them their mother was going to be OK. Angel said DuPagePads has “been my rock through this trying time.” “From a ride to the grocery store to providing cleaning supplies, DuPagePads does whatever they can to help. Because of DuPagePads, my children can stay at their school in Naperville; there is one less family that is homeless, one less child on the streets. To my DuPagePads family, words cannot express the gratitude and admiration I have for you! Thank you for never letting go!” Interested in assisting families and individuals like Angel? Visit our website, www.dupagepads.org/donate, to see how your donation can make more success stories possible. We look forward to a new year as we work together to end homelessness in DuPage County.

If only every day could be like Payton O’Brien Day, which Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley declared Dec. 13. Payton, a 6-yearold battling bone cancer, was the guest of honor at a York High School basketball game that doubled as a Relay for Life fundraiser. The day started with a fire truck escort to the game and featured a sea of fans dressed in purple to promote cancer awareness chanting “Payton Power.” Payton, who’s quick with a joke, is looking forward to his No Mo’ Chemo party following his final two chemotherapy sessions. I’m a 62-year-old black man, and I hate that all this race stuff, black and white, is going on. I will never understand how all this got started. Back in the day, black people had to go in the back door or sit in the back of the bus, and white people could make them get up so they could sit down. Why did all this happen? Why couldn’t we have love from the beginning and stop all this hate? I don’t understand how the color of your skin [matters]. God made us all, we are all God’s children and I can’t understand all this hate.

Why do chairpersons and the mayor of Elmhurst not help the small business owners, instead of looking to get more money? A small, antique-type store, Mindy’s on Vallette Street, had to close because Elmhurst raised rents to exorbitant amounts. Throughout the years, many small businesses closed down due to the same scenario. Doesn’t Elmhurst want these unique stores to bring people into their town?

WOODRIDGE – Hollywood Blvd. is one of a few Chicago-area movie theaters screening the controversial comedy “The Interview.” Early last week, Sony Pictures authorized select independent theaters – Hollywood Blvd. is independently owned – to screen the movie, which stars James Franco and Seth Rogen as journalists instructed to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. The flick has been surrounded with controversy since Sony announced the film wouldn’t be released following a cyberhacking of the company that included threats to any theaters that planned to screen the movie. Sony since flip-flopped on that decision, although many of the large movie theater chains haven’t backed off their decision not to show the movie. Scott Potter, marketing director for Hollywood Blvd., said the theater, 1001 W. 75th St., will have “increased security presence” while screening the movie. “We don’t have any big concerns because the Department of Homeland Security said there is no imminent threat,” Potter said, adding the theater is working with Woodridge Police. On Monday, Potter said the shows on Christmas Day and during the weekend went without any incidents. The shows were sold-out all weekend and Hollywood Blvd. saw record presale numbers for its three Christmas Day showings. Potter said the decision to show the movie had deeper meaning for the Woodridge theater than just ticket sales. “It’s important for freedom of speech and it’s important for our country,” Potter said. “As an independent theater, we wanted to be part of this history.”
Philip Carl Becker, Jr., 91, of Aurora, IL, formerly of Westchester, IL and Kansas City, MO passed away December 29, 2014, peacefully surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of the late Dorothy M. Becker. He was preceded in death by his parents, the late Philip C. Becker and Amy E. LeCluyse, and 2 grandsons Christopher Becker and Philip Shanoff. He is survived by his children, Judith A. (Charles) Jirek, Mary Jean Becker, John P. (Janet) Becker, Thomas G. Becker and Beth (Mark) Becker-Clark. His sister, Patricia M. Clune and brother in law Robert E. Clune. Grandchildren, Chip (Janet), Amy (Scott), Andrea, Johnny, TJ and RJ (Ann). One great grandchild William. Many very special nieces, nephews and cousins. The family would like to thank all the special people at Alden Gardens of Waterford for their loving care and concern over the last 6 years. Phil was proud to serve his country in the US Army during WW II with the 636 Tank Destroyer battalion attached to the 36th Texas Infantry Division. One of his special memories was his trip to Washington DC for the dedication of the WW II memorial, arranged by his son Tom and accompanied by his beautiful wife Dorothy, all of his children and their spouses. In lieu of flowers, memorials to: Wounded Warriors, 1719 N. 60th St., Omaha, NE 68104. Visitation was Wednesday, December 31st 3:00 to 6:00 PM at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville, IL 60540. We are driven. Single-minded. Forward focused. We believe in keeping your health moving forward as far down the road as humanly possible. In nudging, nurturing, supporting, preventing and running interference for you along the way. In doing things that have rarely been done before in hospitals. To not just try, but do. To turn upside down, right side up. And send it on its way. We believe this is one heck of a road trip we’re on. But one well worth the journey no matter where you are along it. Because this joy ride can lead us all to a healthier place. And if that’s not a good thing, well, then we don’t know what is. Edward, Elmhurst and Linden Oaks Hospitals are now EDWARD-ELMHURST HEALTHCARE. And we are Healthy Driven.

LA GRANGE – When you’re craving the taste of Italy, there’s no need to empty your savings account on plane tickets and hotel stays. Just head to downtown La Grange and visit La Buona Vita to experience delicious, homemade Italian fare. On a stormy December evening, my brother and I decided we were in the mood for a home-cooked, hearty Italian meal, and decided to give La Buona Vita a try. Eager to satisfy our appetites, we perused the long-sheet menu tempting us with everything from steak and lamb chops to seafood. To open the meal, we ordered fried calamari, fully aware of the amount of calories we were about to consume. Once we’d savored the well-prepared appetizer, our server brought our dinner salads and two generously portioned pasta dishes. My fellow diner chose the Linguine Viareggio, featuring linguine with mussels, baby clams and scallops dressed in a lively pomodoro sauce. The meal, according to my brother, had the perfect amount of spicy kick. While my taste buds usually crave a heap of spices, I decided to order the Rigatoni Emilio – pairing the pasta with fresh mozzarella, homemade marinara and garlic. The sauce was light and tasty, a great complement to the creamy mozzarella. After we consumed every last, delectable bite of our food, both my brother and I leaned back and sighed, knowing full well not one more ounce could make its way to our stomachs – we were stuffed. The restaurant also features gluten-free recipes including pasta dishes, so no one has to miss out on the pleasures of Italian dining. And the elegant bar offers craft beer on tap, along with select wines from around the globe. The bar is a focal point along the sleek dining room, where large windows look onto the cityscape. During our next visit, the dinner menu won’t be the only one on my radar, because I’m leaving room for one of the tempting dessert selections: La Buona Vita’s Molten Chocolate Cake. It promises a warm chocolate cake with a gooey center served with vanilla ice cream and raspberry sauce. On our visit, we found the food alone was enough to warrant a return trip, but the service added to the experience. Not only was our server attentive and extremely helpful when

York track title tops list of memorable moments
By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com With 2015 in its early stages, there is no better time to take one last look back on the successes IC Catholic, Timothy Christian and York student athletes had in a slew of sports during the 2014 calendar year.

The senior capped it all off by breaking her own school record in the prelims to earn the top seed in the final, which she won with a time of 54.83 seconds. Quote: “I’m a little bit in shock. In consolation play, TC lost 58-52 against Sandburg before beating Ridgewood 61-51. In the finale, Timothy lost 65-38 against Stagg. Ben Lodewyk averaged 10.75 points per game during the tournament.

The Knights took on big school competition at the Oswego East Holiday Classic Tournament and went 2-2, placing sixth out of 16 teams. In the consolation bracket the Knights beat Harlem 51-27 and lost 48-39 against Metea Valley.
WRESTLING York The Dukes placed eighth out of 16 teams at DeKalb’s Don Flavin Invite on Tuesday. York went 2-1 in pool competition with wins against Waubonsie Valley (50-36) and Stagg (54-16) and a loss to Naperville North (58-15). In day two bracket competition, the Dukes lost to Prospect (64-13), Batavia (46-28) and Plainfield Central (39-27).
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Lady Dukes defend tournament title By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com OSWEGO – Whatever York’s girls basketball team has been doing to prepare for and play at the Oswego East Holiday Classic Tournament the past two years has been working. The Dukes defended their tournament title and beat some strong teams along the way. York entered last year’s tournament with a losing record and won the title. This year the Dukes entered with a 6-4 record after some up and down play, but turned it on around Christmas to retain the title. “I think every start to every season you’re always trying to find the right balance, the right players and matchups and what you do well,” coach John Constable said. “I think last year and this year, this year in particular, we just found the right balance at the right time on offense and defense.” Sarah Milkowski was named the tournament MVP and Jessica Bianchi joined her on the all-tournament team. A year ago Bianchi was the
MVP and Milkowski was also all-tournament. Milkowski averaged just under 18 points per game and eight rebounds through the first three games, but felt sick in the final against Sycamore. Milkowski didn’t score and pulled in four rebounds. “If you had told me her stat line at the end of that championship game and that we would have won, I wouldn’t have believed you,” Constable said. “Megan Backman came off the bench and was on fire. She single-handedly kept us in the game offensively. Jess Bianchi and Alyssa Kovatchis did a great job of finding her.” Kelly Polte, who was out sick for the first two games of the tournament, made her only start against Sycamore and grabbed a team-high six rebounds while matching up against a player Constable described as a strong post player. Backman had a team-high 18 points in the 50-43 victory and was 5-for-6 from 3-point range. Bianchi had 15 points and six assists. Kovatchis scored nine points and had four assists.
Earlier in the tournament, York defeated Joliet 63-33, Plainfield North 46-26 and West Suburban Gold leader Proviso East 50-43. Constable credited the team’s overall defense, especially the play of Jamie Kovatchis, for leading the team’s title run. “There wasn’t a game that she had [to guard] a player that ... wasn’t usually a 15-20 points per game scorer,” Constable said. “Especially in the championship game, she had her hands full with a girl from Sycamore that can flat our score. Jamie Kovatchis was just on lock down.” The 10-4 Dukes next play at Lake Park on Jan. 6. The next West Suburban Silver game is at Downers Grove North on Jan. 9. “I think momentum wise we have the senior guards to keep us competitive in every game that we play this year,” Constable said. “If we play defense the way that we did during this tournament and we’re able to shoot the ball the way we did ... I think we’re going to be pretty good.”

ELMHURST – Hosting the 32-team Jack Tosh Holiday Tournament last week made for a busy week for York players, coaches and staff off the court, but the Dukes also had some tough games on the court. York, which had made the final the past two years, went 2-2 at the tournament. The Dukes opened with a 58-47 win against Minooka before losing 64-48 against Riverside Brookfield. In the consolation bracket York beat Hinsdale South 53-51 and lost 65-46 against Wheaton North in the finale. “This was a great tournament for us,” coach Vince Doran said. “We got great experience. We played four very good teams and to come out 2-2 was really good, actually, playing the competition we played and getting in the winners’ bracket right away. Two good wins, Minooka has done well here after we beat them, they won their next two games, and ... Hinsdale South, who is very talented. We competed against RB and Wheaton North, we just let those games get away from us.” Senior Jayvon Thomas returned to the team after missing York’s two games before the tournament. The guard scored in double figures in all four games and led the team each game. He scored 28 in the loss against RB and av-
eraged 20.75 points per game during the tournament. “It was nice getting Jayvon back,” senior guard Luke Libert said. “Obviously he’s a very good offensive player. He allows us to drive and kick for threes. We hadn’t been shooting it that well, but once we got those drive and kicks we knocked them down a little better.” Libert scored in double figures in each of the Dukes’ past two games. The first consolation game had a little more intrigue because Doran coached Hinsdale South through the 2010-2011 season before taking over at York. Doran still teaches at the Darien school and knows some of the players on the team. “A couple of those kids I have in class and are real good kids so I guess they can’t talk any garbage to me the rest of the year,” Doran joked. York now brings a 6-5 record into 2015. The first game of the year will be Jan. 6 at Naperville North. The Dukes return to West Suburban Silver play Jan. 9 against Downers Grove North in Elmhurst. “We’re going to get into the heat of things now with a tough nonconference game first with Naperville North, who is playing real well right now,” Doran said. “In league play we’re 1-1 right now. We’re going to get down the stretch and get into some real battles. Everyone is looking forward to playing in some exciting games coming up here.”

York’s Ryan Camp dribbles past Wheaton North’s Nick Jordan on Tuesday at York’s Jack Tosh tournament. The Dukes went 2-2 at the event and take a 6-5 record into 2015.
IC Catholic’s boys basketball team won all three pool play games at the IC/Westmont Invite to make the tournament final on Tuesday. IC defeated Elmwood Park 63-48, Latin 68-54 and Evergreen Park 75-47. In the final St. Edward beat the Knights 58-41. Troy Burrows and Rhashaun Epting scored 10 points each in the final.
“We love to play big teams, it helps to toughen us up,” coach Jack LeGrand said. “We’re getting there. We made about five steps forward in this tourney, and then about two steps back.” The Trojans (6-8) are traveling to California for a service project that will include a game on Jan. 6 at Crean Lutheran High School in Irvine. “We’re excited to get there and I think [against Stagg] we might have been looking ahead to some of those fun times,” LeGrand said of his team’s performance in the tournament finale.
