Sean Tovey, recreation coordinator at NEDSRA. “People are learning from both sides,” Tovey said. “Some volunteers have experience bowling so they can help our participants with technique, and our athletes give them a different perspective on things. I think the unified model is something we can all learn from.” Tovey said the Unified Bowling program, which is a co-ed league, has five participants this season, ranging in age from 21 to 48. The league is not competitive, but simply for fun and recreation, he said. “It’s staying positive, working with a teammate toward a goal,” Tovey said. “I think it’s a sense of pride, when I see my athletes perform as best they can.

They make it easy for students to volunteer, and their events are so fun.” Anderson has been bowling with NEDSRA for many years, and his mother, Bonnie Anderson, said both she and her son love the unified program and the partnership with the college students. “They have such good senses of humor, they’re energetic, very outgoing and they want to get out there and help other people,” Bonnie said about the student volunteers. Gary Anderson, 48, is very excited about “getting some spares and strikes” this Sunday at Wood Dale Bowl. “It’s fun. It’s just fun to be with my bowling teammates,” he said. “I try hard to improve my score every time.” Anderson is one of five Northeast DuPage Special Recreation Association participants who will be paired up with an Elmhurst College student volunteer from 1 to 2 p.m. every Sunday as part of NEDSRA’s Unified Bowling program, which runs from this Sunday through mid-March. Dr. Liz Majka, who teaches psychology and culture at Elmhurst College, said students are required to participate in service learning, which means they have to spend time volunteering in a culture that’s unfamiliar to them. She said it’s a valuable experience for her students who work with NEDSRA, and most report they “have a blast.” “Elmhurst values service learning,” Majka said. “It enhances the concepts students learn in their classes. They have to write reflection papers and analyze the bowling program and link it to what they learned in class.” Majka said NEDSRA has been a great organization for her students to work with. Last term, she had about two or three of her students volunteer with the bowling program, she said. “NEDSRA is great at communicating with us,” Majka said. “They have a

That’s all I ask for; I don’t care if they win or lose.” Rick Stachurski’s son Alex, 21, participates in the NEDSRA bowling program and looks forward to it every session. “It’s the one thing he seems to love, and he likes the friendships he makes,” Stachurski said. “[The bowling program] gives Alex something to do, rather than sitting at home on the computer or watching TV.” Bruce Flowers, NEDSRA’s marketing coordinator, said the group is still growing its unified sports programs. In addition to unified bowling, NEDSRA members can participate in unified golf or unified bocce. He said they’re considering offering unified basketball this spring. The unified programs are based on the Special Olympic model of inclusion, Flowers said. “The Special Olympics thought it might be better to incorporate people with disabilities and not separate them, so the participants will get a better experience,” he said. Bonnie Anderson said she loves NEDSRA’s programs and would encourage any parent of a child with disabilities to get involved. “Everybody at NEDSRA is so dedicated to the well-being of the people they support,” she said. “It’s amazing what they do for people with all kinds of disabilities. They really are wonderful.” Gary Anderson agreed. He said he plans to be an active participant in NEDSRA’s programs “for always.”

It’s an exciting time for the St. Alexander Catholic Parish in Villa Park SPONSORED BY

Not only did the church recently celebrate its 90th anniversary, but thanks to an anonymous donor, the congregation was able to mark the milestone with the dedication of a newly-commissioned statue of the parish’s namesake. St. Alexander member Marianne McKeague, also the parish’s historian, said when church officials received word about the donor?’s decision to commission the statue, they realized its delivery would coincide with the church’s 90th anniversary. “That was a fortuitous coincidence,” she said. So who was St. Alexander? Church officials know he served as a Pope in the first century. “But there really are no pictures of him and anything that has been created for him was just an artist’s imagination,” McKeague said. “So we decided for the statue we could imagine, too.”

He is attributed with blessing homes, a common practice of that time. Some believe he was martyred. “Because most of them were at that time,” McKeague said. While the church has other statues, this is the first of its saint. “The anonymous donor decided St. Alexander should have a statue of its patron saint,” McKeague said. “And the people are very, very pleased. They think it was high time.” Because of St. Alexander’s ?connection to the practice of ?blessing homes with water, the statue has been placed behind the church’s baptismal font. The pedestal he sits on was also donated by an anonymous donor. “At some point in time we would like to make a more elaborate baptismal font he will be a part of but we have to wait for funding for that,” McKeague said. Another celebration of the statue will be held on the Feast Day of St. Alexander, May 3.

College of DuPage is under fire for former employee’s theft conviction at Elmhurst College SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA The College of DuPage is under fire after a media investigation detailed the college’s former radio station engineer’s criminal history. WDCB Public Radio’s engineer had previously been convicted of theft for crimes he committed while employed in a similar role at Elmhurst College, according to the report. Elmhurst officials contacted the College of DuPage about the theft investigation, the report stated, but the College of DuPage continued his employment. In a statement released Jan. 15, the college denied that anyone from Elmhurst College contacted College of DuPage officials. “Our investigation has so far showed that we have no record of any communication from Elmhurst Cam-

pus Security regarding this former employee, nor have we recollection of anyone contacting us,” College of DuPage Police Chief Joe Mullin said in the statement. Officials at the College of DuPage said they will continue to investigate the claim that someone from Elmhurst College made contact with them. In the college’s statement, President Robert Breuder recommended to the Board of Trustees chairwoman that they hire an independent investigator to examine the facts of the communication process with Elmhurst College. The College of DuPage announced in October it had received information about a possible fraud case at WDCB in December 2013 but did not release any additional information about that case, citing it as a pending investigation that could result in legal proceedings.

Elmhurst Property Tax Cut Is Auto-matic SPONSORED BY

Thanks to an automobile-driven recovering economy, Elmhurst’s 2015 property taxes will drop by $27 for the average homeowner ($293,000) and abatement of General Obligation Bond taxes is back on the policy table. Despite a $300K pension fund hike, the City’s $9.5M property tax levy came in $500K lower as 2014 retail sales taxes—fueled by new and used vehicle purchases—exceeded budget projects. When the City hiked property tax rates and cut its Operating Budget for 2010, retail sales taxes had fallen for the seventh time in nine years to $7.9M from 2000’s high mark of $11.5M—with auto sales accounting for half of that $3.6M decline. In 2009, the number of vehicles sold in the United States was the lowest since 1969. In good times, auto sales account for 35 to 40 cents of every retail tax dollar in Elmhurst, and that percentage increases to 45 cents when related sales taxes (i.e., fuel, parts) are factored in.

For 2014, Elmhurst is on pace for $4M in retail sales tax from automotive—the City nets $100 per every $10K in sales— and filling stations, with industry-related home-rule taxes generating an additional $400K. Elmhurst Auto Group’s nameplates of Toyota-Scion, BMW and Jaguar are projecting more than $1M in 2014 municipal taxes from the sale of some 4,700 vehicles. Sales at Toyota (3,200) and BMW (1,115) are up 40% and 63%, respectively, as compared to 2009. Seven of every 10 Toyotas registered to an Elmhurst resident was purchased at Elmhurst Toyota. Larry Roesch Chrysler Jeep Dodge, which expanded with Dodge’s line of Ram ProMaster vans, is projecting $600K in 2014 municipal retail tax from 2,000-plus units sold. Vehicle sales this year are nearly triple that of 2009 and 2010, both of which were down 50% from 2007.

County launches #GivingDuPage volunteer awareness effort By NATHAN LURZ

Know more

nlurz@shawmedia.com DuPage County is hoping the power of the hashtag – and social media in general – will help connect residents to local volunteer opportunities. The county officially launched Serve DuPage 2015, an outreach campaign to promote civic engagement, Monday on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The effort is part of the Illinois-wide Year of the Volunteer initiative, an undertaking spearheaded by the state legislature. “The Year of the Volunteer is a huge opportunity to create awareness about ... the need for volunteers so that the nonprofits can actually execute on their missions, provide the essential programs or services that they offer the residents of DuPage County,” Giving DuPage Executive Director Shefali Trivedi said. The initiative will be carried out by county outreach branch Giving DuPage, which helps nonprofits garner

Each month, the campaign will spotlight a different service area and encourage elected officials, churches, businesses and residents to post pictures of themselves volunteering on social media using the hashtag #GivingDuPage. Trivedi said raising awareness about what nonprofits offer and how to volunteer is “90 percent of the battle,” and having support from the county, state and DuPage Regional Office of Education, which is working to raise awareness among schools, could go a long way toward upping the level of commitment across the county. DERMATOLOGY UPDATE Presented by

Todd T. Davis, M.D. Board Certified Dermatologist

SPREADING CONCERNS Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is described as a “superbug” because it is resistant to most antibiotics. While Staphylococcus aureus is a common bacterium that normally resides on the skin and in the noses of about one in three people, it normally does not cause illness. However, if the MRSA strain is able to penetrate the skin through an abrasion or cut, the infection has the potential to spread to the lungs, blood, bones, joints, heart, and brain. While MRSA infections were once primarily limited to hospital settings, “communityacquired” MRSA (CA-MRSA) strikes otherwise healthy individuals in close contact with each other. Athletes are particularly susceptible.

COD officials respond to Business experts to anchor public questions at forum Economic Forecast event By KELLI MURRAY By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com Representatives from the College of DuPage answered questions from the public regarding recent events at the school during a forum Jan. 15 at the Wheaton Park District Community Center. Questions during the two-hour forum, which was organized by the League of Women Voters of Wheaton and attended by about 80 community members, focused on items such as transparency and financial concerns. There were five panel members for the forum: board trustee Dianne McGuire, college Executive Vice President Joseph Collins, faculty senate President Glenn Hansen, Student Leadership Council President Stephanie Torres and Citizen Advocacy Center attorney Andrea Alvarez. The center is a nonpartisan nonprofit that focuses primarily on open meeting laws and Freedom of Information Act requests. Several questions addressed Wa-

terleaf Restaurant and its finances since opening. “The Waterleaf has lost money,” Collins said, estimating a loss of about $500,000 in recent years. “Nobody asked about other programs that lose money,” he said, citing the McAninch Arts Center. “That doesn’t necessarily mean we shouldn’t have them. They have value.” One question focused on why the college asked legislators for relief from FOIA requests. Collins said the college received 150 FOIA requests in the past 12 months, which resulted in $100,000 in legal fees and lost productivity. Those numbers didn’t faze Alvarez. “This is a large community. This is the public’s information,” she said to Collins. Alvarez also said the $100,000 shouldn’t be a source of concern. Certain questions posed during the evening presented numbers Collins disagreed with or thought were misleading.

Technology redefines learning in D-205 The U.S. Department of Education’s National Education Technology Plan challenges educators to “create engaging, relevant and personalized learning experiences for all learners that mirror students’ daily lives and the reality of their futures.” The Common Core State Standards outline four Cs: critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity. COMMUNITY Additionally, District 205’s VOICE strategic plan, mission, vision David and belief statements recogSmith nize that technology is integrated into students’ lives and that schools must prepare students for a technological world. With these and other guiding influences, District 205 embarked on a Mobile Learning Initiative to advance the use of technology for learning. Technology will never replace good teaching, but it can help teachers meet the educational needs of all students and challenge all students to their full potential. The initiative offers students access and agency: access to the world’s learning resources when and where needed and agency to own and personalize their learning. With both access and agency, as one middle school student states, “Learning opportunities are abundant. ... If every student had access there would be no limit to the things we could do.” In 2012, the initiative began as a Google Apps for Education pilot with one device per student in a few classes at York High School. One student reported, “The Chromebook helped me learn. ... It helped me stay more focused, and I felt more independent while working.” In 2013, the Google and Chromebook pilot was expanded to our three middle schools. One middle school teacher revealed, “[The pilot] helped me to rethink my instructional approach [and] diversify my own classroom and thinking. This is the technological world that our students live in. … I truly believe this is the world in which they should be educated.” This year, additional Chromebooks were deployed, and, more importantly, instructional technology coaches were hired to provide teachers with high-quality professional development and just-in-time coaching on how to intersect good pedagogy with technology to achieve learning targets. Next year, Google Apps will be introduced at the elementary level, and more devices will help the district move toward the goal of one device per student. The Mobile Learning Initiative is an ongoing endeavor. Instructional practice, assessment techniques and the learning environment must evolve to offer the engaging, relevant and personalized learning experiences that our students want and deserve.

Elmhurst College graduate Gina Venier performs during her “American Idol” audition in Nashville.

An Elmhurst College graduate recently made herself heard on the national stage when she performed in the “American Idol” auditions that aired Jan. 8 on Fox. Playing her cajon, a box-shaped percussion instrument, Gina Venier, 24, impressed the judges with her rendition of ZZ Ward’s “Put the Gun Down.” Good luck in the next round. Good news for one section of Elmhurst residents in the ongoing battle against flooding. The DuPage County Board last week approved an agreement to allow the city to use the Elmhurst Quarry Flood Control Facility to relieve residential flooding. The additional stormwater storage space could provide relief to 76 Elmhurst homes. David Good, managing editor dgood@shawmedia.com 630-427-6270

SOUND OFF

It never ceases to amaze me of the stupidity of some people, especially some of those in the Sound Off section of the Suburban Life. One person complained about plowing of streets and snow left on his driveway. He said the village should come up with a solution to this. Do you have any ideas? I’ll bet not. Another complaint was about getting on Ogden Avenue from the Burlington area. The advice was to install a traffic signal. What kind of a signal, to do what and where? In many cases, traffic control signals do not help but add to problems. Look at the Forest Hills section of Western Springs. There is a total of more than 95 stop signs there – all installed at the insistence of residents. This section of the village is about oneeighth the size of the total. Ridiculous.

Technology not required A few years ago, The New York Times had an article reporting that most of the schools in the Silicon Valley area did not allow any electronic devices in the classroom and encouraged the parents not to let their children to use them at home.

Mr. and Mrs. John and Susan Cook, of Lombard, are happy to announce the engagement of their daughter, Emily, to Frank Tenuto, son of James and Dolores Tenuto of Addison, IL. The bride-to-be graduated from Glenbard East High School in 2006, in 2010 from the Univ. of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a B.S. in Kinesiology/Physical Therapy and in 2013 from Rosalind Franklin University of Science & Medicine with a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree. She is employed with Athletico in Chicago. Her fiance’ graduated from Driscoll Catholic High School in 2006, in 2010

The students actually learned how to add, subtract, multiply, etc., and use their brain and memory. When educated and it was needed, the students could learn how to use a calculator or computer in a few hours or less. If this were true here you might be able to find a young checkout server in a store that could actually make change without using the cash register.

Underpass could save lives I’d like to respond to the overpass/ underpass in Glen Ellyn. I think an overpass/underpass is more important than a pool situation that was going here. Also an underpass from the train station from the north side to the south side is also very important. I think it could save lives in the future.

Kudos to the person who wrote that “reminder” to keep pets inside. If you have a pet, it is indeed a “member of the family” and should be treated as such. At the very least, they should be treated right. This means they live inside, have proper food and vet care. They should be housed inside during hot weather as well as cold weather and rainy weather. In other words, they need to live inside just as their “pawrents” do. People who cannot or won’t do this should not have pets.

ECONOMIC FORECAST

Elmhurst Park District receives $400,000 grant

2015

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA ELMHURST – The Elmhurst Park District will be making improvements to Butterfield Park, thanks to a $400,000 grant from Illinois’ Open Space Land Acquisition and Development program. Former Gov. Pat Quinn announced $26 million in investments for 75 projects across Illinois at a Jan. 3 news conference in Oak Park. The grants are aimed at helping communities acquire land for parks and improve recreational facilities. Elmhurst Park District applied for the grant in mid-2014, according to a district news release. The grant requires the Park District to provide matching funds of at least $400,000, but the district expects total funding for the Butterfield Park renovation project to exceed $800,000, the release stated. Improvements planned include refurbishing tennis courts and lighting systems, correcting drainage issues, relocating basketball courts, repairing walking paths and replacing the playground, according to the release. Park District staff will begin working with V3 Engineering to prepare a master plan that reflects the needs identified for park redevelopment and the community input received at the May 22, 2014, Butterfield Park public meeting, the release stated. A proposed master plan will be presented to the Board of Commissioners for approval in 2015 with plans to begin the project in 2016, according to the release. Additional community input meetings will be scheduled once an initial master plan has been developed.

Busy York boys enjoy successful MLK weekend By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com WHEATON – While most people enjoyed a three-day weekend for Martin Luther King Day, York’s boys basketball team had its busiest weekend of the season. The Dukes played five games from Friday to Monday, winning four of them. York opened with a 56-50 win at Oak Park-River Forest on Friday and won three games at Wheaton Warrenville South’s MLK tournament to make the final. In the final, Champaign Central beat the Dukes 60-46. “It was a great weekend for us,”

coach Vince Doran said. “Our kids really came together. It was a good time, we saw a movie [Monday] so it was a chance to do some stuff away from the court as well. It’s a first class tournament for us to be a part of. We did a very good job. There’s a lot of good teams here and we got good games in.” On the first day of the tournament on Saturday, York beat Marmion 65-59 and Waukegan 61-35. The Dukes knocked off the host Tigers 44-39 in a semifinal on Monday before dropping the final. In the final, York played even with the Maroons for a while, but Champaign Central closed the game on a 10-0 run to seal the title. Jayvon Thomas,

who scored 26 points in the final and averaged 18 points per game, represented York on the all-tournament team. “It’s an honor to make the all-tournament team,” Thomas said. “I think we could have done better in the championship game. We just need to step up and make shots.” Fellow senior guard Luke Libert also averaged in double figures at 11.5 points per game during the tournament. Libert and Thomas were both big parts of York’s 25-win team last season and are hoping getting to a tournament final will give the younger players a taste of what big games are like. “They’re playing better, they’re

Last year we won Thanksgiving, got to the championship game Christmas and we won here so we probably need a little better focus in the championship game. We’ll get it.” The Dukes (11-7, 2-2 West Suburban Silver) are in action tonight against Hinsdale Central, which is undefeated in the Silver.

Blazers maintain winning ways against Morton By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com ADDISON – Addison Trail just keeps on winning. The Blazers aren’t always doing it pretty, but they are winning close games. AT picked up its fourth win by four points or less this season with Tuesday’s 55-52 win against Morton. The win was crucial in the West Suburban Gold race because Morton was the last undefeated team left in the league. At 3-1 in the conference, the Blazers are now right in the mix. “For us to place well in conference it’s going to take more efforts like [Tuesday] where everybody is giving everything they’ve got,” senior Taylor White said. The Blazers hit some big shots and were the recipients of a big charge call at the end of the game to ice the win. AT (12-3, 3-1 West Suburban Gold) led 53-52 in the final seconds and Morton (9-7, 4-1 WSG) had the ball. Morton senior forward Weisner Perez was the leading scorer in the game with 25 points, but was called for a charge while driving into the lane. Matt Gontarek was the defender that made the crucial play with 3.3 seconds left. “We all knew who was getting the ball and that was Weisner Perez,” Gontarek said. “As he drove in I just helped out, stepped in and got the call.” Jaavion Bradley made two free throws on the other end for AT and Morton was unable to get a potential game-tying shot off before the buzzer. Bradley, who finished with 11 points, also made two free throws with 29.8 seconds left to give the Blazers the lead at 53-52. The Blazers, who led 27-25 at halftime, seemed to make a big shot whenever Morton narrowed the deficit or

AT made five 3-pointers from a tied game or with a one-point lead in the second half. White, who made two of those threes, led AT with 18 points. “I work as hard as I can so I’m pretty confident in games so I don’t have to think about it too much,” White said.

“I’m confident and I want the ball. I want to be the one to make the decision and I want to make the play.” Morton technically still holds the lead in the West Suburban Gold with a 4-1 record. The Blazers are 3-1 and Proviso East sits at 2-1. The Blazers

Timothy Christian boys basketball gaining valuable experience By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – Learning to play without a superstar isn’t an easy task, which Timothy Christian’s boys basketball team has found out this winter after the graduation of Connor VanderBrug. But a younger, less experienced Trojans squad slowly has started to find their way. “It was a struggle early, just trying to understand how to play without as good of a player as Connor,” Timothy Christian coach Jack LeGrand said. “But we are starting to get there. “That was the big thing, he [Connor] did a lot for us. Robert McGivney played a strong all-around game, totaling 13 points, five rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots. “Ben shot the ball very well,” LeGrand said, “and Robert has been coming along for us really well.” Timothy Christian was coming off a 61-43 victory against Ridgewood on Jan. 17 as McGivney scored 16 points and Lodewyk added 10.
