Elmhurst schools close for weather SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA ELMHURST – Many schools in the Elmhurst area closed Wednesday and Thursday because of extreme cold weather conditions. Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205, IC Catholic Prep and Immaculate Conception Grade School were among many in the area to call off school in response to weather forecasts that included wind chills of several degrees below zero. Timothy Christian Schools and Visitation Catholic School were closed Wednesday but reopened Thursday. A Wind Chill Advisory was in place Wednesday and Thursday for DuPage, Cook and Will counties. Wind chills were expected to reach 25 to 30 degrees below zero Wednesday night, before climbing to above minus 20 by mid to late morning Thursday, according to the National Weather Service. In those conditions, frostbite can occur within minutes on exposed skin, and extended exposure will increase the risk of hypothermia, according to the weather service. As of print time, schools had not yet officially released whether or not they would close Friday.

And I’ve remained friends with so many parents all through the years.” Caruso estimates she’s taught between 300 and 400 children throughout her career. no at 9 years old. She said she fell in love with it immediately, even describing the piano as her “guide to happiness.” She took lessons throughout high school, and one of her teachers, Juliet Hatchet, studied under French composer and pianist Claude Debussy as a young woman, Caruso said. Caruso started teaching out of her Elmhurst home once her own children started school.

ley Jayne, 83, took lessons from Caruso for about 20 years. She said Caruso taught her how to play the organ and piano, and they’ve since become close friends. “She was a magnificent teacher,” Jayne said. “She adjusted what she taught to the ability of each student. She’s patient and caring and made a terrific impact on her kids. They were heartbroken when she retired. She was that inspiring to them.” These days, Caruso is enjoying her retirement and continues to improve, thanks to daily physical therapy sessions at her home. “At first, I couldn’t sit in a car or stand at a sink,” Caruso said. “But now, I can play piano for 15 minutes [at a time]. I was determined to play again. I hope to be able to play for hours.” However, it’s unlikely Caruso will go back to teaching, even if she’s physically able to, she said. “I miss the kids, and I do miss teaching,” Caruso said. “But it’s so demanding. It’s kind of nice to be retired now. I can see my grandkids more often, and my husband doesn’t have to be quiet when I’m teaching. I had a long career, and I enjoyed every moment.”

ELMHURST – The hardest thing Connie Caruso had to do during her students’ piano recital in May was to put on a smile, knowing it would be her last as their teacher. “They didn’t know it was my last recital, but I knew,” Caruso said. “It was hard because I didn’t tell them, and it was very emotional for me. I cried.” Caruso, 78, retired this summer from teaching piano in Elmhurst after almost 40 years. She broke her pelvis from a fall in February but continued to teach, despite the pain. Doctors then found a fracture in her spine in June. “I was devastated that I had to give it up,” Caruso said. “I couldn’t sit at a keyboard and use my arms to play. Otherwise, I’d probably still be teaching.” Caruso handwrote letters to each of her students after May’s recital, explaining why she had to retire. She said she had strong reactions from some. “I had kids calling me crying, but I encouraged them to look elsewhere for other teachers. Some did, and some didn’t,” she said. Caruso began playing pia-

the type of music her students were interested in learning. “I taught jazz, improvisation, piano literature, theory, a combination of music. I didn’t limit myself to a certain type,” she said. “And that’s why the majority of my kids stayed with me until they graduated from high school.” Elmhurst resident Lisa Hartley has two daughters, 12 and 18, who studied under Caruso for several years after she was referred to the piano teacher by friends. Hartley said Caruso is “like a grandma” to all her students. “She’s always positive in her comments and never made the kids feel bad if they didn’t practice,” she said. “She touched a lot of lives, for sure. We feel lucky we had her. She’s such a strong teacher and a good person.” Hartley said she and her daughters cried when they received Caruso’s letter announcing her retirement, even though they weren’t surprised. “She instilled a love of music [in the kids],” Hartley said. “She wanted them to enjoy it. I hope my older daughter picks it up again as an adult because she had such a strong foundation.” Westchester resident Shir-

Dinner can be tough; Bridge Communities offers food for thought Do you stare into your refrigerator, wondering what to make for dinner? Do you have a hard time finding nutritious foods that your kids will actually eat? Have you found it difficult to find foods that are both healthy and budget-friendly? These are issues all families face and Bridge Communities’ families are no different. Throughout a family’s COMMUNITY time with Bridge, they learn VOICE a number of life skills; now, Lisa how to cook healthy meals for the family has been added Doyle to the list. Bridge hosts healthy eating workshops at least twice a year at Knox Presbyterian Church in Naperville, led by volunteer Suzanne Thibeault and Bridge’s community outreach coordinator, Vicky Joseph. The classes are made available by sponsorships from J.R. Albert, Families Helping Families, PhilCon and Whole Foods. More than 40 parents and children attend each session and benefit from the recipe demonstrations, tips and tastings. At our most recent class, Bridge families learned how to make cauli-rice and zucchini noodles, or zoodles. Registered dietitian Toni Havala also spoke to the class about weight management and met one on one with clients to help them set personal goals. Teens attend the classes with their parents while kids ages 6 to 12 attend their own Let’s Move! class, to learn about healthy food and exercise. Child care is even provided on site for kids ages 5 and younger. Parents also are taught different tactics for how to introduce unfamiliar foods to young kids. After the most recent workshop this fall, one attendee, Nydia, wrote “I just wanted to share a new food we tried and liked. My oldest daughter ate it, too! She’s my cautious eater. It is spaghetti squash, onions, kale, spinach and Parmesan cheese. I also added zucchini because I had a little bit in the fridge.” Another client, Maureen, attended the workshop in April and used her newfound knowledge while interviewing for a job at a grocery store. She was immediately hired to work in the produce department, and her daughter was hired for a summer job in the bakery, too! Seeing the long-lasting effects of Bridge’s healthy eating workshops is the ultimate reward.

York’s Ryan Camp drives past Wheaton North’s Nick Jordan on Dec. 30, 2014 during the Jack Tosh Holiday Tournament in Elmhurst.

Looks like we’ve got a high-percentage shot at some good basketball in Elmhurst in 2015. The York High School girls extended its winning streak to five games with a win Tuesday to open the new year. Meanwhile, the York boys scored a big win over Naperville North to kick off 2015. Fans can catch the boys in action at 7:30 p.m. today at home. The girls’ next home game is at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. SOUND OFF

Elmhurst Alderman Gukenkauf will be missed I will miss Ms. Diane Gukenkauf as our Elmhurst alderwoman. Diane always questioned expenses and some strange actions by past mayors and officials. She … is a smart person and leader! We will miss her thoughtful advice and counsel in the future.

To save money, try going to community college Although private four-year colleges are noting their very minimal tuition hikes this year, they have a history of disregarding the inflation rate in many years by large percents. Yet, students are burdened with loans that will last a lifetime, and at the same time, find it hard to find decent-paying jobs. Why not “get even” by spending the first two years at a high quality community college like the College of DuPage? Then, transfer as a junior, which becomes quite easy for most four-year colleges. You’ll end up with as good an education, less student loans and probably save at least $50,000 to $200,000 in the process.

Downers Grove should consider village complex

There has been a lot of talk about spending $52 million dollars on a new village complex to include the village hall, police department and fleet maintenance. Drivers on tollways in the western suburbs could reach their destination a little faster in 2015. And, for the first time, if a boater along the Cal-Sag Channel or Fox River operates under the influence, the boat can be impounded. Likewise, if underage kids are caught drinking inside cars, motor homes, campers and private planes, their parents now can be charged with a crime. As Illinois residents begin a new year, they face 220 new laws that took effect Jan. 1, approved by lawmakers and Gov. Pat Quinn. The highlights cover various issues, from transMark Busch - mbusch@shawmedia.com portation to wild animals. Traffic heads down Interstate 88 on Jan. 2 near the Highland Avenue exit near Downers Grove. The speed

limit on area tollways could increase to 70 mph, pending a traffic study and approval.

After lawmakers raised the speed limit to 70 mph on downstate interstates in 2014, they decided to do the same in 2015 for Chicago-area interstates under the Illinois Tollway Authority’s control. However, it could be a while before 70 mph speed limit signs start popping up along Interstates 88, 294 or 355. The tollway authority still needs to conduct traffic studies to determine if a speed limit increase is warranted. Then it would require approval from the tollway’s board of directors, the Illinois Department of Transportation and the Joint Commission on Administrative Rules before taking effect. Another bill now prohibits police from taking a person’s driver’s license as bond after pulling them over for minor traffic violations such as speeding.

Animal protection Black bears, cougars and gray wolves are now protected species in Illinois. Although still rare, the wild animals in recent years have been spotted around the state, including a black bear seen last summer in a field between Marengo and Belvidere, near Interstate 90. The new designation allows conservation officials to better protect the animals, as they make appearances in Illinois.

Birders from around the county and beyond migrated into the forests, preserves, lakes and streets of DuPage County for the annual Christmas Bird Count in mid-December. Each year, the National Audubon Society sponsors counts across the country. The two events the DuPage Birding Club hosted centered around the Morton Arboretum in Lisle on Dec. 14, 2014, and the Fermilab in Warrenville on Dec. 20. Each group covers a 7½mile radius from that point and works with area captains to coordinate movements and spot as many different birds as possible. “Our counts are some of the largest if not the largest in the Midwest,” said Jeff Chapman, the coordinator for the Fermilab count and an environmental consultant from Woodridge. This December, birders spotted a record number of different species – 89 – at the Arboretum. The Fermilab count saw an above-average 83 species. The society celebrated its 115th Christmas Bird Count in 2014, according to the Audubon website. By working with coordina-

FREDDIE MAC

Another Strong Year for Freddie Mac Multifamily Securities MCLEAN, VA--(Marketwired - Jan 6, 2015) - Freddie Mac (OTCQB: FMCC) Multifamily further reduced taxpayer risk in 2014 by selling the overwhelming majority of credit risk on the mortgages it purchased to private capital investors through its Multifamily K-Deal securitization program. There were 21 Multifamily securities offerings in 2014 for a total transactions volume of $22.4 billion which, in addition to K-Deals, included a small volume of other securities, including the company’s Q- and M-Deals.

Grew the private investor base to more than 140 domestic and international investors. Typical investors are life insurance companies, banks, pension funds, money managers and hedge funds, some of whom assume first loss positions, reducing taxpayer risk. Inclusion of K-Deals in the Barclays U.S. Aggregate and Global Aggregate bond indices in June.

2014 Highlights: Continued to support affordable rental housing through securitization. Approximately 90 percent of the apartment units Freddie Mac finances are affordable to households earning up to the area median income, and most of those loans are securitized. Issued $21.3 billion in K-Deals in 2014 and securitized almost $93 billion in multifamily loans since the program started in 2009, backing approximately $79 billion in guaranteed certificates and $13.5 billion in unguaranteed certificates. Introduced and issued $189 million in Q Certificates that are backed by $215 million in multifamily loans not underwritten by Freddie Mac at the time of origination but that meet the company’s current underwriting standards. Q Certificates were introduced this fall. Issued $683 million in M Certificates backed by $747 million in multifamily loans. M Certificates are fully guaranteed tax-exempt and taxable securities supported by pools of unenhanced tax-exempt and taxable multifamily housing collateral.

“The K-Deal program has become the benchmark for Agency CMBS. 2014 was our second largest year for securities issuance and we now have just short of $100 billion in K Certificates outstanding. This year we also issued Q and M Certificates, adding variety to the investment opportunities for our customers. Part of the reason for our success is the exceptional credit performance of our collateral. At the end of the year, total K-Deal delinquencies amounted to 1 basis point.” “The multifamily market is healthy and we expect to issue approximately $25 billion in multifamily securities across 17 to 20 K-Deals next year. Also, in 2015 we expect to introduce a few new types of collateral to our securitizations, including 10-year floaters and small balance loans.”

Quotes from Mitchell Resnick, vice president of Freddie Mac Multifamily Capital Markets:

This announcement is not an offer to sell any Freddie Mac securities. Offers for any given security are made only through applicable offering circulars and related supplements, which incorporate Freddie Mac’s Annual Report on Form 10-K for the year ended December 31, 2013, filed with the Securities and Exchange Commis-

Freddie Mac’s press releases sometimes contain forward-looking statements. A description of factors that could cause actual results to differ materially from the expectations expressed in these and other forward-looking statements can be found in the company’s Annual Report on Form 10-K for the year ended December 31, 2013, and its reports on Form 10-Q and Form 8-K, filed with the SEC and available on the Investor Relations page of the company’s Web site at www.FreddieMac.com/investors and the SEC’s Web site at www.sec.gov. 4 questions to ask before purchasing a new home uying a new house is an exciting time in your life. Because it is one of the most important investments you’ll make for yourself and your family, there are many important factors to consider. Before making a purchase, take these four questions into account. Having the answers will allow you to enjoy your new home now and in the years ahead. 1. What exterior color palette speaks to you? Your home is a reflection of your personality and can be an extension of your lifestyle. When buying or designing a new house, contemplate its curb appeal. First impressions matter, so it’s important to consider architectural style, exterior color and details like trim and landscaping. Coordinate the trim, soffits and doors with the primary siding color for a polished look. To help, look to popular and complementary color combinations developed by the color professionals at James Hardie: www. jameshardie.com/pdf/colorplus-color-combinations. pdf. 2. Is your home protected from environmental elements? With today’s ever-changing climate, extreme weather is a reality in all corners of the country. From hurricanes and blizzards to wind and wildfires, select siding and trim products that help protect your home. Consider your options careful-

ly. Vinyl siding can melt and wood is susceptible to rot. James Hardie siding products are engineered specifically for climate zones, so whether you live in a cold, wet, hot or dry part of the country, you can choose the siding that will stand up to weather conditions in your area.

3. Is your new home built using sustainable products? Green building is popular these days, in part because an energy-efficient home can save a homeowner money on heating and cooling bills. By choosing a home clad in 100 percent sustainable and efficient material, you’re consuming less energy and

reducing your environmental footprint. 4. What maintenance will your new home require? Selecting or buying a home made with low-maintenance building materials can lower the chances of large ticket home repairs, or prevent them altogether. Wood siding

and trim requires frequent repainting or replacement, and vinyl may warp, melt or fade. Considering durable and longer-lasting fiber cement siding can minimize the need for repairs. Additionally, purchasing a product with a strong warranty is a great way to maximize and protect your investment.

York’s Sarah Milkowski drives towards the basket Tuesday during a game against Lake Park. The three-year varsity player is a key player at both ends of the floor for the Dukes.

Milkowski helps lead York girls hoops By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com ROSELLE – It doesn’t take long to notice Sarah Milkowski’s toughness in whatever sport she is playing. The York senior plays basketball and softball and is a standout in both sports. She is in her third year on the varsity basketball team and will enter her third year of varsity softball in the spring. Milkowski is second on the team in scoring at 9.9 points per game, but her more notable attribute is her knack for grabbing rebounds. Despite being only 5-foot-7,

Milkowski leads York with 6.8 rebounds per game. Her explanation as to why she is able to be so effective as a small rebounder isn’t about boxing out or being able to out jump or outwork opponents. “I just know that I’m going to miss a lot of shots so I got to get them right back,” Milkow-

ski joked. “Just follow your shot.” Milkowski was named the MVP of Oswego East’s holiday tournament, helping the Dukes win the tournament for the second year in a row. Fellow senior starters Jessica Bianchi, who was all-tournament at Oswego East, Alyssa Kovatchis and Jamie Kovatchis have helped lead York to an 11-4 record. “That was awesome, it was a really great honor,” Milkowski said of winning MVP. “Everyone played incredible.” York has been playing some of its best basketball lately and is on a six-game winning

streak. The Dukes returned from holiday break on Tuesday with a 64-52 win at Lake Park. Bianchi led the team with 16 points. Milkowski and Megan Backman scored 15 each. “Sarah is always going to be an offensive threat for us,” coach John Constable said. “She is always going to be at the top of our statistics in terms of offensive and defensive rebounding. She’s just a monster on the boards. We know we’re going to get those types of efforts out of her.” In softball, Milkowski is a good defensive catcher and one of the leading hitters on

the team. She hit .375 as a sophomore and improved to an even .500 last spring en route to all-conference honors. She said she has played softball longer and hopes to play softball in college, but has no preference between the two sports. “I like each one in season,” Milkowski said. “I started softball maybe a couple years sooner. I started more competitive softball sooner than that.” York next plays at Downers Grove North tonight at 7:30 p.m. with a home game Saturday at 2:30 p.m. against Oak Park River Forest.

work the ball around.” Rhashaun Epting finished with a team-high 13 points while Jordan Rowell checked into double figures with 10. Rowell added six rebounds and three steals. The Knights, who are 8-5 on the season, were coming off a 58-41 loss against St. Edward on Dec. 30, 2014, in the championship game of the IC/ Westmont Christmas Tournament. Previously, IC had defeated Evergreen Park (75-46), Latin (68-54) and Elmwood Park (63-48) as part of that same event to reach the championship. The squad is back in action tonight when it travels to take on Aurora Central Catholic.

IC Catholic’s Will Lyles takes a shot Tuesday during a home game against Glenbard South. The Knights struggled in a 76-45 Metro Suburban Conference loss against the Raiders. Erica Benson - ebenson@ shawmedia.com

ELMHURST – A young team with only three seniors on the roster, the IC Catholic boys basketball team was expected to go through some growing pains this winter. Now, after a strong start, the Knights find themselves in the midst of a tough stretch after dropping their second straight game, this time by a 76-45 margin to Glenbard South on Tuesday. “We have talented kids,” IC Catholic coach TJ Tyrrell said, “It’s just about getting them to play together. The main thing for us is to keep the kids positive and have them pick each other up.”

IC dug itself a big hole early against the Raiders, trailing 25-8 after the opening quarter. The home team couldn’t get closer than 13 points the rest of the way as it was stymied by the visitors’ full-court press. The Knights finished with 28 turnovers. “They [Glenbard South] shot the ball exceptionally well,” Tyrrell said. “We struggled with their pressure and we haven’t really struggled much with pressure this year. They forced a lot of turnovers and we dug ourselves a hole and couldn’t get out of it. “We were forcing way too much, rushing instead of pulling it out. We are trying to get the kids to understand how important it is to be patient and
