Residents split on stormwater decision By MARI GRIGALIUNAS mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – Although stormwater was not listed on the Elmhurst Park District Board of Commissioners’ agenda Nov. 19, about two dozen residents shared their support or disappointment in the board’s recent approval of two stormwater projects. On Oct. 22, the Park District board approved alternate stormwater detention projects for both York Commons and Golden Meadows Park that differed from those proposed by the city of Elmhurst. The alternative York Commons plan reduces the amount of stormwater storage that would be created. “To know that you have the ability to help and to know that you voted against it is absolutely disheartening,” Washington Street resident Tracy Fleischer said of the Park District board’s York Commons plan, which removes a proposed detention basin on the east side of the park. Other residents thanked the board for their alternative stormwater plans to those proposed by the city. “On Oct. 22, you dedicated your firm dedication to the parks and the people who you have generously committed to serve, and for that you have my admiration and appreciation,” Cayuga Avenue resident Mimi Black said during the Nov. 19 meeting. For more than 90 minutes, the board listened to residents on both sides of the issue. Board President Carolyn Ubriaco also read 15 emails sent by residents not in attendance. Following the Park Dis-

trict board’s Oct. 22 vote on the two stormwater detention projects, Elmhurst asked the board to reconsider the city’s original York Commons proposal during a stormwater subcommittee meeting. The board then received the city’s formal request Nov. 13. “Why does the city feel that they need to politically bully you to give them what they want their way?” asked Bill Chu, who lives on Cayuga Avenue.
Chu was one of about 50 Cayuga residents who challenged the original plans, saying a proposed detention pond on the east side of York Commons would back up to many of their homes. In addition to safety concerns, many of the Cayuga residents said the detention pond was only a less expensive Band-Aid fix to a problem that requires the city to upgrade its sewer system. Sixth Ward alderman Michael Honquest publicly
voiced his disappointment in the Park District board’s decision at a Nov. 3 Elmhurst City Council meeting. On Nov. 19, he again asked the board to bring the city’s proposal back for reconsideration. “I don’t know what other plan we can put forward,” Honquest said Nov. 19. Elmhurst Park District Executive Director Jim Rogers explained the Park District received a letter from the city late in the day Nov. 13 asking the board to reconsider the east side of York Commons. According to V3, an engineering firm hired by the Park District, the letter does not include much new information, Rogers said. He said the city had indicated during its last meeting with Park District board representatives that more specific information would be supplied as rationale for the board to reconsider. “It does not indicate the changes in the number of homes that will be affected nor increased cost the city would have to bear by not using the east basin,” Rogers said. Rogers said he has suggested the Park District board reassemble its stormwater subcommittee to meet with the city and go through the letter point by point, but did not indicate when. At least one Washington Street resident, Molly Hughes, said she doesn’t have time to wait. She explained her family has decided they need to move after flooding eight times. They’ve lived in their home for seven years. “We are underwater literally and financially,” Hughes told the Park District board between tears.

Elmhurst encourages residents to shop local By MARI GRIGALIUNAS mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – For those who dislike the chaos of Black Friday shopping or simply prefer the unique feel of shopping locally, Small Business Saturday encourages everyone to patronize businesses in their own community. “For communities that really want to maintain a small business atmosphere, it’s imperative that they shop at small businesses,” said John Quigley, president of the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He pointed to the closing of Leonard’s Fine Men’s Clothing after 65 years in town as an example of a valuable local business that couldn’t compete as demand for suits fell in recent years. Small Business Saturday is dedicated to supporting

small businesses across the country. Founded by American Express in 2010, the day is held every year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. “What most people need to connect is that the higher amount of sales tax generated … that usually allows property tax rates to remain stable,” Quigley said. He explained while people may shop outside of Elmhurst to save 10 or 20 percent on an item, that lost sales tax from shopping out of town could eventually lead to a rise in property taxes to fill the gap. Quigley said 67 to 75 per-
cent of what residents spend at local stores or restaurants stays in the community. “Where if you’re spending it at a national chain, less of that money … stays in the community,” Quigley said, adding it could be less than half in some cases. While as a longtime customer Quigley was personally sad to see Leonard’s go, he pointed to Main Street Candy and Toys, which opened in Elmhurst earlier this year, as what appears to be a local business success. In the spirit of Small Business Saturday, Main Street Candy and Toys will be giving
out a limited supply of free tote bags, valued at $75, with each $100 purchase. Between 9 a.m. and noon, shoppers can get 15-percent off their entire fullpriced purchase. There also will be a raffle for a free Calico Critter bundle. Some restrictions may apply. “I typically avoid Black Friday shopping,” said Quigley, who tries to regularly shop in Elmhurst all year long in addition to Small Business Saturday. He said for most retail businesses, the last quarter of the year is when they make enough money to survive the rest of the year.
Saturday shoppers are often rewarded for their shop local efforts with deals, similar to how the big stores compete on Black Friday. As an example, Debbie Markus Watrous, owner of Goalie’s Goodies, will offer 10-percent off gift cards and a buy one, get one half price deal for popcorn on Saturday. “It’s the only way we can try to fight against the malls and the corporations,” Watrous said about why Small Business Saturday is important. Elmhurst City Centre is encouraging Small Business Saturday shoppers to spend their evening downtown after a day shopping to enjoy the tree lighting at Police Plaza from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday. Santa will stop by before making his way to Fitz’s Spare Keys for a singalong. Visit elmhurstcitycentre. com for information.

ELMHURST – For the 20th year, dozens of volunteers assembled at the Elmhurst Elks Lodge to pack turkeys, jellied cranberries and pumpkin pies into boxes for Thanksgiving dinner. “Our plan is to support this thing forever,” said Michael Baren, Thanksgiving dinner chairman for Elmhurst Elks Lodge 1531. He said the Elks have no plans to stop their tradition of supplying local churches with Thanksgiving dinners for those who would otherwise go without.
It’s a tradition not only for the Elks, but also for the volunteers. Baren remembers when some of the same volunteers who helped this year were not much bigger than the turkeys they were trying to carry. “It was great. We got a lot of extra help from the York High School Honor Society,” Baren said. This year, the Elks supplied dinners for Peace Lutheran Church, First Church of Lombard and York Community Resource Center in Lombard, as well as Immaculate Conception in Elmhurst, St. Alexander Catholic Church in Villa

Local woman sues Wal-Mart By MARI GRIGALIUNAS
News to your phone
mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com An Elmhurst woman is suing Wal-Mart after she claims a line of carts knocked her unconscious in the parking lot of its Villa Park location. After finishing her shopping April 1, Joan Baratta was walking toward her car in the Wal-Mart parking lot at 900 S. Route 83 in Villa Park with her purchases when an employee pushing a long line of carts allegedly struck her with the front cart, according to a complaint filed Nov. 13 in DuPage County Circuit Court.
Visit shawurl.com/texts to sign up for news and weather text alerts from Suburban Life. The complaint stated Baratta was knocked to the ground and suffered permanent injuries, including a concussion with loss of consciousness and a deep cut on the back of her head, along with injuries to her shoulder, back and neck. Baratta is suing Wal-Mart Stores Inc. for compensatory damages exceeding $50,000, in
addition to legal expenses, for failing to exercise reasonable care for her safety while lawfully on the company’s property, according to the complaint. Randy Hargrove, a WalMart spokesman, said Tuesday the company had not yet received the complaint but Wal-Mart would respond appropriately through the court. “We take our customer safety very seriously,” Hargrove said. Baratta is represented by attorney Patricia C. Bobb of Patricia C. Bobb and Associates in Chicago.

development signs. “Yes, there is a disconnect between our zoning ordinance and our comprehensive plan. There’s a disconnect within our comprehensive plan,” Elmhurst’s Planning and Zoning Administrator Than Werner told the committee. Morningside’s plan calls for a net density of 87.46 dwelling units per acre. This number does not include the project’s public plaza in its calculation. Werner pointed out that while the comprehensive plan sets a high-density maximum at 20 units per acre, the zoning code allows up to 75 dwelling units per acre in the downtown for senior housing. “We’re not the only municipality that’s going through this,” Werner added about taller and higher-density building proposals. The City Council is expected to vote on the committee’s report Monday.

ELMHURST – Elmhurst’s Development, Planning and Zoning Committee will recommend the City Council approve a developer’s zoning requests for a Hahn Street mixed-use development. “I think the council is clearly in favor of this concept,” committee Chairman and 5th Ward alderman Scott Levin said about the city-selected developer, Morningside Group, who was chosen to develop city-owned property in downtown Elmhurst just south of Panera on York Street. The six-story development, called North District, will include 192 luxury apartments, 12,000 square feet of retail space, 153 public parking spaces, 335 residential parking spaces and a civic plaza. In order to construct the development, Morningside requested a conditional-use permit for building height, as well as several variances related to density, dwelling units below the second floor, the number of retail parking spaces required, the number of residential parking spaces required, 26 tandem parking spaces in the residential parking area, sign area, and height and area of temporary

District 205 shares its students’ many 2013-14 achievements Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 developed a set of performance indicators three years ago as a way to monitor progress and improvement. The results from the previous year are reported each fall to the Board of Education and our community. Results for 2013-14, when COMMUNITY compared to 2012-13, include VOICE rises in the graduation rate, Charles the percentage of high school Sprandel students considered to be on track for college and career readiness, the percentage of elementary and middle school students considered to be on track for college and career readiness in the area of math and the percentage of elementary and middle school students meeting typical growth for reading and math. The district decreased between 2012-13 and 2013-14 in the following areas: Educational Planning and Assessment System growth, middle school fine arts participation and the percentage of elementary and middle school students considered to be on track for college and career readiness in the area of reading. District 205 students continue to perform at a high level. For example, in its annual ranking of the nation’s Best High Schools, U.S. News & World Report listed York Community High School as 28th in Illinois based on how well it prepares students for college, as well as other academic criteria. York was 645th on the national list and garnered a silver award. The district exceeds state and national averages in every measure where such a comparison is possible. The district’s achievement results center on the District 205 Key Performance Indicators. These indicators and their associated goals have provided stable measures that guide consistent goals across the district. The state of Illinois released the annual school report cards for 2013-14 the last week of October. They, along with the district’s Achievement Summary Report, are published on the District 205 website at elmhurst205.org/State_RCards and are available through the Illinois Report Card website at illinoisreportcard.com. Metrics and new features in this year’s state card include: expanded At-A-Glance highlights, as well as test and achievement data; 5Essentials survey results; post-secondary enrollment data and information on district finances.

OUR VIEW
Shop at Elmhurst stores on Small Business Saturday We often pass up our local merchants in lieu of national chain stores. Maybe it’s the lure of lower prices. But how much are you really saving? And who benefits? Likely, your money is going overseas or into the pockets of billionaire conglomerate owners. Sure, the sales tax you pay stays local, but the rest of your money, and your patronage, go to support a business with little interest in Elmhurst or DuPage County. This Saturday, let’s change all that. It is Small Business Saturday, which comes one day after Black Friday, when deal-hungry shoppers flood chain stores for deals that might only save them a couple bucks. Saturday, let’s spend our money in local stores that believe in our local economy. Some may argue locally owned shops are more expensive. Maybe they are, but likely not by much. The advantage of local shops is that you are buying from your neighbors, who in turn reinvest your money into your community. And they probably have unique

items you won’t find in big-box stores. Some local shops can even personalize gifts or create special orders – something the recipient will appreciate and cherish. In downtown Elmhurst, there are many one-of-a-kind boutique shops; enough to make for an entire day of shopping. You can find clothes, toys and housewares from smaller vendors with a more carefully selected inventory. And don’t forget about the local restaurants, manned by local residents with a passion for cooking. Our local shop owners work hard to provide excellent customer service and a personalized shopping experience. So don’t spend your entire holiday gift budget Friday. Make a shopping day out of Saturday. Invite your friends and family and explore the local stores. Treat yourself to a nice lunch at a local café or diner. Remember, your money will be supporting your neighbors and your local economy, which is quite a gift in and of itself.

8 candidates compete for DuPage County Board seat By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com Eight area political hopefuls are vying to become the newest member of the DuPage County Board. But it won’t require another election – at least, not yet. On Saturday, County Board Chairman Dan Cronin and District 4 board members Grant Eckhoff and Amy Grant heard from candidates seeking to replace Glen Ellyn resident and Republican JR McBride, who died Oct. 24 af-
ter a long battle with cancer. The group took questions from the trio in front of about 18 members of the public at the DuPage County complex, answering queries about county governance, past experience and issues of interest during the nearly two-hour meeting, said county spokeswoman Joan Olson. The finalists, culled from 34 original applicants, are Wheaton residents Alan Bolds and Michelle Moore, and Glen Ellyn residents Tim Elliot, Catherine Galvin, Robert Gans, Lawrence
LaVanway, Mark Pfefferman and Karyn Romano. District 4 also includes parts of Carol Stream, Glendale Heights, Lombard, Bloomingdale, Addison, Winfield, Lisle and Downers Grove. To view a map of the district, visit www.dupageco. org/CountyBoard/Dist4Map. Cronin is expected to present his final selection for a vote during the County Board’s meeting Dec. 9. The new member will serve the remainder of McBride’s term through November 2016.

• DINNERS Continued from page 5 Park and Holy Covenant Metropolitan Community Church in Brookfield. Each of the churches collect the meals and distribute them to families in need. “We could not provide for these families if we didn’t have help from the Elks,” said Ginny Morgan, a member of the Care and Share Program at Peace Lutheran Church in Lombard. She explained each year the Care and Share Program commits to helping 50 families through York Township or the Middle Eastern Christian and Burmese Christian communities that hold worship services at Peace. This year, Baren said the Elks collected enough money to put together about 160 meals. Although the meals are packaged and distributed to local churches during the Saturday before Thanksgiving, the Elks raise money all
container between 9 a.m. and noon Saturday to the Elmhurst Public Works Garage, 985 S. Riverside Drive, according to a city news release. Cooking oil sticks to sewer pipes and can cause clogs and breaks that are costly for homeowners and municipalities to fix. Grease also interferes with the water
treatment process at sanitary facilities. Once collected, Green Grease Environmental and Chicago Biofuels will convert the cooking oil into biodiesel fuel, the release stated. Representatives from various organizations will be on site at the collection to assist residents and ensure that only cooking oil is deposited into the recycling bin.
“There should be no one without a Thanksgiving dinner because there are so many organizations that help.”
Elks help feed Thanksgiving dinner to about 600 people. St. Alexander Catholic Church received 30 dinners from the Elks and used them to supplement donations collected through the parish to distribute a total of 96 Thanksgiving dinners. The number of families who request a dinner from the church increases each year, so donations from the Elks allow St. Alexander’s to meet a rising demand. “It grows by about 20 families a year,” said Jan Robbins, an administrator for the church’s Thanksgiving program, which is led by Deacon Julio Jimenez. Between the work of the Elks and area churches and pantries, Robbins said she thinks the local community does a lot to make sure every family has a dinner to be thankful for on Thanksgiving. “There should be no one without a Thanksgiving dinner because there are so many organizations that help,” she said.

year long for the event. “It’s good to have a full, rounded meal,” Baren said. The Elks-supplied dinners reflect that notion fully. In addition to the turkey, each box includes a fresh pumpkin pie, stuffing, jellied cranberries, mixed vegetables, white potatoes, sweet potatoes and dinner rolls. “Our belief is that if you look at the different sides, they don’t have to use them all,” Baren said, explaining the meal may last more than one day for some families. Each year, he estimates the

Nominated by Scott Forcash, Guidance Counselor: “Tyler was one of the most talented and thoughtful writers I have had the privilege to teach. I always looked forward to reading his work because I knew that it would be stylistically creative with insightful connections. I was able to use his work as models for others. Tyler is such a responsive student; for example, as students and I were sharing thoughts in class, I would always see Tyler completely engaged and providing verbal and nonverbal feedback. He is simply an incredibly positive presence and role model for those around him. He was a leader in small group setting, encouraging and supporting his peers… Tyler’s resume truly speaks for itself; however, I cannot stress enough that his exceptional character and humble demeanor are what make Tyler one of the top students of my career. Even though he is now a senior, he makes a point to pop into my classroom to see how my day is going. These simple, kind acts are what make Tyler outstanding in addition to his incredible intelligence.” - Ms. Terri Woebel, English Teacher

AT-Willowbrook co-op’s Kelly McNamara swims to state butterfly title By MATT LE CREN msleditorial@shawmedia.com EVANSTON – Swimming has never been a high-profile sport at Willowbrook High School, but Kelly McNamara may be changing that. The senior became the first state champion in the history of the Addison Trail-Willowbrook co-op program Saturday when she captured the 100yard butterfly at the state finals at Evanston. “I’m a little bit in shock,” McNamara said. “I wasn’t actually sure if I would win or not, so it’s really nice.” McNamara had been building toward this moment for two years. She finished sixth in the butterfly as a sophomore and was second last year.

wrapped my head around it and I probably won’t for the next week.” McNamara, who has swam for Elmhurst Swim Team and Westmont Swim Club, and her teammates have toiled in obscurity using second-rate facilities. Neither District 88 school has a pool, so the girls have to take a bus to practice at the Addison Park District fitness center. They share the pool, which has just five lanes and one legal starting block, and a hot tub with members of the public. That didn’t stop McNamara, who doesn’t get home from practice until 8 p.m., from honing her craft and making the improvements that transformed her into a champion. “I did a lot more over the summer, so when I came into
this season I had, like, more of a base,” McNamara said. “I was more in shape, so then it was easier to focus on the turns and start and technique and do all the little things right.” Anderson said McNamara, who is undecided on where she will swim in college, has put the program, which is unknown even to some Willowbrook students, on the map. “With all our kids go through with the buses and the bad pool and that stuff, to be able to accomplish this is just mind blowing,” Anderson said. “I’m so proud of her and I’m so proud of our team. “There’s a lot of kids who pushed Kelly over her four years to get her here and a lot of work she put in. It was just unbelievable that she was able to do this.”

By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com The girls basketball season has tipped off with many teams playing in tournaments to start the campaign. Here’s the outlook for Addison Trail, IC Catholic, Timothy Christian and York this season:

Year Position sr. F sr. G sr. G jr. F sr. G sr. F
Outlook: The Blazers feature a lot of returning talent from a team that struggled last season. Guards Kelly Delawder, Steph Messina and Nina Beltrano and post players Tegan Graff, Rachel Baumgartner and Alex DiSilvio saw regular playing time a year ago. Five of the girls in that group are seniors while Graff is a junior. That experience has the Blazers looking to be more competitive this season. “We have six returning players from last year who all played major minutes for us,” coach Rob Schader said. “We expect to compete this year and win more than the five games we won last year.”
IC Catholic Knights Coach: Aubree Lawrence-Schuett Conference: Metro Suburban West 2013-14 record: 25-8 (9-1 Suburban Christian Gold) Top returners Name Anjella Farmer Chiara Gaudio Erin Maloney Tess Reardon

York’s Alyssa Kovatchis passes the ball Nov. 21 in a home game against Wheaton North. Kovatchis is one of several returning players giving a boost to the Dukes this season. Outlook: The Knights were fourth in Class 2A last year, but that team’s leaders, Rory Manion and Grace Vitek, are gone. Two starters return in guards Chiara Gaudio and Erin Maloney. Both players averaged more than six points per game last season and will likely be asked to provide a bit more scoring. On the inside, the Knights have more to replace. Claire Gibler, a 5-foot-10 freshman, could provide a boost in the paint. “We are young, but the newcomers bring game experience,” coach Aubree Lawrence-Schuett said. “They are coachable and willing to learn. Expectations are high and we expect to be competitive in the [larger] division of the new conference [Metro Suburban West].”
low senior Juliana Stremler, 5-foot-10, is another third-year player in the frontcourt. The Trojans went 1-3 at the IMSA Tournament. Timothy lost against Yorkville (47-14), Top returners Name Year Position Aurora Christian (63-23) and Indian Creek (44-39) while Kaitlyn Gehrke sr. F beating Reed-Custer 54-53. Maty Huisman sr. Outlook: York is loaded with returning talent, led by last year’s leading scorer Jessica Bianchi. Bianchi, a senior guard, scored double figures in two of the Dukes’ first three games and is a solid defender. She is a four-year varsity player along with Alyssa Kovatchis. York lost its season opener against Prospect 57-52 before beating Queen of Peace 72-36 and Wheaton North 72-58. Sarah Milkowski, all-conference last year, is a tough rebounder inside and can provide some scoring when needed as demonstrated by her 19 points against Wheaton North. Kelly Polte, described by coach John Constable as the team’s only true post player, and freshmen Danielle Dennis and Caylin Rufus will also see time in the frontcourt. In the backcourt Jamie Kovatchis is also slated for a big role, especially as a key defender. Megan Backman, who poured in 22 points against Wheaton North, and freshman Kyra Kroll are newcomers pushing for minutes as well. “The one player that has really stepped up from the sophomore team and really given us great minutes so far is Megan Backman,” Constable said. While pushing for a conference title is always a goal, Constable wants the team to focus on every game with the main goal of getting a good postseason seed. “Our goal is to be a top four [sectional] seed,” Constable said. “We have to constantly have that in the back of our mind so when that time rolls around we are in that position.”
