By F. AMANDA TUGADE atugade@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – The Elmhurst Park District board unanimously voted Wednesday to keep the existing East End Park playground until they determine it is no longer safe and functional for residents and visitors. The 18-year-old playground’s equipment is out-of-date, making it difficult to find repair parts, according to Park District officials. It also does not meet standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The Park District still plans to move forward with its plan to build a new, ADA compliant playground at the park. That project would cost an estimated $340,000, and construction is expected to start in August and take about two months. As for the existing playground, the board could decide to either remove the it entirely or allocate funds to replace it with a smaller, up-to-code version. For residents Jackie Schulz and Kirsten Powers, the board’s reconsideration to preserve the playground was a small victory. Schulz had created a petition to save the playground that garnered 149 supporters and caught the board’s attention. “We are not anti-change. We support the new playground,” Powers said. “But change, in and of itself, is not good if it’s not well-planned, if it’s not well-researched – and it discards the old just because it’s not new.”

“We are not anti-change. We support the new playground. But change, in and of itself, is not good if it’s not well-planned, if it’s not well-researched – and it discards the old just because it’s not new.” Kirsten Powers Elmhurst resident

Powers, who spoke during the meeting’s public comment portion, said if money is the issue, she encourages the board to seek grants that may be used toward the existing playground’s preservation, maintenance and necessary upgrades. Schulz said there is enough room for two playgrounds at East End Park. The current playground is located in the southeast corner of the park. According to the Park District’s renovation plans, the new park will be located in a more central spot in the park, away from adjacent streets. After hearing residents’ concerns, the board’s discussion and decision centered on the current playground’s safety. Elmhurst Park District Executive Director Jim Rogers said they should keep in mind the 18-year-old playground is due for renovations, which have been delayed because of impending stormwater management issues with the city. “It’s fine until someone sues you,” Rogers said, adding the playground

is safe for residents, but it no longer meets ADA requirements – a problem all the board members want to resolve. “It is our job to replace this,” Board commissioner Patricia Morissette-Moll said. “We all want our kids to be safe.” Vice President Vince Spaeth said he sees no rush to remove the East End Park playground. Board commissioner Colette Kubiesa, however, said making minor repairs or changes to the playground’s equipment will eventually lead to replacing or removing it completely, which may cost more in the long run. Rogers said the two-month construction of the new playground later this year is unique because residents may use the existing playground while work is ongoing. With the board’s decision to keep the existing playground, Kubiesa said they should start actively looking for grant funding so they are prepared when the time comes to finally remove or replace it.

Council restores Elmhurst Historical Museum budget By F. AMANDA TUGADE atugade@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – First Ward Alderman Diane Gutenkauf felt a “wrong has been righted” when the Elmhurst City Council approved the Elmhurst Historical Museum’s strategic plan and reinstated $125,000 to its budget Monday. “Now the museum can stop worrying about funding and get back to business,” Gutenkauf said. In late 2014, the council voted to cut the museum’s budget but intended to restore it if the museum created a strategic plan that detailed its revenue generation goals by July 1, 2015. Gutenkauf, who opposed the budget cut, was worried about how the cuts would affect the museum’s staffing and its completion of a history of Elmhurst exhibit. The Elmhurst Historical Museum’s 13-page plan outlined improvements for the next three years and maintained its dedication to providing a

unique cultural and educational experience to attract residents and visitors. Brian Bergheger, the museum’s director, said the plan is broken down into four main goals, which involve curating relevant exhibits and programs that interest patrons, branching out to local organizations, volunteer groups and schools to build community involvement, and recreating the museum’s brand to reach a broader audience. He added the museum also will develop new ways to maximize its space and continue to address any

public safety issues. Fifth Ward Alderman Chris Healy, who initially approved the budget cut, said the strategic plan now serves as a guide for the museum to take that step forward in evaluating its marketing operations and revenue generations. “The plan is based on taking advantage of the museum’s strengths and opportunities,” Bergheger said, noting the museum’s location, which sits near the city’s downtown center and is one block away from the train station, plays a large role in bringing new people to Elmhurst. Bergheger said he and his staff are working on building the museum’s presence and making it an attractive destination. Healy said he is confident in the museum’s efforts for improvement because it is an important asset in remembering and appreciating the history of Elmhurst. “All they have to do now is stay on track,” he said.

Almost two years into her novelty candy and popcorn business, Watrous said there’s more to opening up a small business than just hoping that, in and of itself, will draw people to come into your store. “It’s about getting your name out there and brand recognition,” she added, a crucial lesson she learned immediately. Like Watrous, Claudia Arroyo, the co-owner of ClaSha, a handmade jewelry and clothing boutique previously on Addison Avenue, knew she had to reach out to the community in order to bring customers into her store. Watrous and Arroyo partly relied on the Elmhurst City Centre’s events to draw those people in. “Our job is to bring people to the area, but it’s up to them on where they want to go,” Elmhurst City Centre Director Tom Paravola said. Paravola added the City Centre’s goal is to “look out for the city,” and each event, billboard display and banner has to market downtown Elm-

ELMHURST – On March 27, The Runner’s Soul made an announcement on Facebook leaving loyal customers stunned and heartbroken by the sudden news. After a little more than a decade, owner Jayne Aspan decided to close the store in Elmhurst and continue to expand her second running specialty store in La Grange. The Runner’s Soul, once visited by eager running enthusiasts and lined wall-to-wall with running gear, now sits silent and empty along North York Street. In late 2014, Bill Patterson, the former owner of Leonard’s Fine Men’s Clothing, a staple suit shop in Elmhurst, made a similar decision. After 65 years of providing locals with slick suits and custom-fit tuxedos, the clothing store shut its doors. On Facebook, Patterson thanked his customers for their years of service, their friendship and the way they redefined the meaning of community. Both Aspan and Patterson listed a number of reasons for leaving. From competing with nearby malls like Oakbrook and Yorktown centers to customers choosing online shopping, both business owners saw their shoppers

hurst as a whole. That becomes difficult when business owners want to collaborate with one another and seek promotional help from the City Centre. Paravola said the most he and his staff can do is help facilitate the conversation through their weekly bulletin updates between business owners interested in working together, but they cannot directly work with selected businesses to create, host or promote those events. Watrous said the events City Centre puts together concentrate around the York Theatre and the plaza, and Paravola admits that is the area that is the most accessible to locals and visitors. “It is a constant battle to push people out,” he said, adding not all areas of downtown Elmhurst have the same foot traffic, and the stores near the York Theatre pay the price to have their stores on North York Street. But Patterson said the problem is deeper than that. One question on all of the business owners’ minds is what type of businesses do local residents want that will bring them to the area? Paravola said he and his staff do struggle to define the phrase “shop locally” because it could mean one of two things: to literally shop in the area or to support mom-and-pop shops in the area.

2015 Chrysler 200 Receives Coveted “Family Vehicle Of The Year” Award SPONSORED BY

By Denise Freese When shopping for a vehicle to fit a family’s needs, consumers tend to focus on comfort, safety, appearance, and value. Each year the Midwest Automotive Media Association (MAMA) chooses one vehicle with these characteristics, out of a pool of nearly 100, as its “Family Vehicle of the Year”. For 2015, MAMA announced the Chrysler 200 as the recipient of the annual award. To be considered for the award, vehicles must have four doors, have a starting Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price of less than $50,000, appear at one of MAMA’s two annual rallies, and be new or significantly updated within one year of the 2014 Spring Rally, according to www. media.chrysler.com. Each vehicle is driven and evaluated, and subsequently voted on, by 99 MAMA journalists. The Association is a non-profit group of more than 200 automotive journalists and industry professionals

who developed the award to help consumers make a wise purchase decision, according to the website. “We know how important it is, and how difficult it can be, to pick the right family car,” said Patrick Olsen, MAMA President. “This award helps give consumers a chance to see the car that nearly a hundred automotive journalists - many with families themselves - selected as the best choice for families in 2015.” The 2015 Chrysler 200 provides families with simple elegance, new technology features, 60 safety and security features, and a class-leading available all-wheeldrive system, which is an important feature for drivers in harsh winter climates. MAMA journalists awarded the 2015 Chrysler 200 a total of 79 points in their evaluations. The second place vehicle finished with 73 points, and the third place vehicle received 68 points The 2015 Chrysler 200 is designed, engineered, and built in Michigan. SASED students visit hair salon and spa retreat By F. AMANDA TUGADE atugade@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – Twelve-yearold Nick Cima knew exactly what hairstyle he wanted when he walked into Alter Ego Hair Design, a boutique hair salon in Elmhurst, on April 14. The sixth-grader from Cass Junior High School in Darien told the hairstylist he wanted his hair to look like Cpl. Tank Dempsey’s, a fictional video game character in “Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.” The hairstylist, unfamiliar with the character’s hairstyle, searched for images online with Nick. “I forgot he had a hat,” Nick said, recalling his effort to help the hairstylist. Eventually, the two found the perfect photo that illustrated Dempsey’s slick buzz cut – a style Nick said looks “pretty good.” Nick was with four other Cass students in fifth, sixth and seventh grades and their teacher Morgan Teichmiller at the salon that day. As students of the School Association of Special Education program in DuPage

SASED student Nick Cima gets his hair cut April 14 at Alter Ego Hair Design during a field trip to the Elmhurst salon. County, a portion of their curriculum involves taking short field trips once a week, practicing daily living skills and interacting with people around the community. SASED social worker Kristin Simmon-Lowman said through different activities, students learn “life skills” such how to use money when grocery shopping, order food at a restaurants and use the crosswalks

when walking from one place to another. For this particular trip, Simmon-Lowman, who is a regular at Alter Ego Hair Design, spoke with owner Lindsay Mills-Steffe about having the students visit the salon. Mills-Steffe said she didn’t even think twice and agreed to be the host for the students’ field trip. Simmon-Lowman said chil-

dren with autism are sensitive to touch, and going to the doctor and the dentist for a checkup or getting a haircut becomes a difficult task for them. “Every time we introduced something new, we showed them what it was,” Mills-Steffe said, noting she and her staff took the time to explain how their tools worked and what they felt like when used. “For boys’ and men’s haircuts, we use electric clippers to clean around the ears. We ran the clippers across the boys’ arms and made them aware of what was happening,” she said. Mills-Steffe said that helped create a conversation between them and the students, who were eager to ask questions. Another portion of the field trip took place at the Body and Soul Spa Retreat next door to the salon. Owner and licensed massage therapist Robin Doerr worked with Cima and the other students, introducing them to different types of aromatherapy oils and soothing lotions. Doerr said a part of the ses-

sion centered on a pediatric massage, a permission-based method that helps children with autism to relax, as well as become accustomed to the sense of touch. Nick said his visit to the spa retreat was relaxing. But Doerr said each student reacted differently, and for some, the facial, head and neck massages, as well as using the lavender oil, became overwhelming for them. While the goal of the field trip was to teach the students and enhance their skills, Doerr and Mills-Steffe said they learned more from them. “It’s about being present with them and understanding their nonverbal cues,” Doerr said. For Mills-Steffe, she said it is important not to discount people based on their differences. This field trip came during Autism Awareness Month, which is celebrated this month. Simmon-Lowman said the field trips encompass the message of the month, which emphasizes the power of acceptance and dispelling stigma.

York to partner with Indiana University Effective next fall, York Community High School will be the first high school in Illinois to partner with Indiana University through its Advance College Project. Together, they will offer college credit to qualified high school seniors (and some juniors) who enroll in the university’s general education courses. These university courses will be taught by cerCOMMUNITY tified York teachers who hold VOICE adjunct lecturer status with Connie Indiana University. Chester York students will have the following four courses from which to choose: Literary Interpretation, Personal Finance, Public Speaking and Reading/Writing/Inquiry. The Advance College Project began in Indiana in 1982-83 with six Indiana high schools enrolling 269 students. Significant and continued growth during the past two decades has resulted in more than 12,000 students from Indiana, Michigan and Ohio earning more than 60,000 college credit hours this past year. Eligible students will be considered when providing evidence of college preparatory curriculum and advanced coursework, being in good standing at York and maintaining a minimum 2.7 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Once accepted into the Advance College Project, students will be concurrently enrolled at both York and Indiana University. Based on completion of the course(s) at York, they will earn honors high school credit, as well as an Indiana University transcript reflecting the ACP coursework. Only a grade of C or better is transferable. The college credit students earn is transferable to most major universities. Students should, however, verify the transferability with the colleges and universities that they are considering. Should students be interested in eventually attending Indiana University, they will still need to apply through the Office of Admissions. Each ACP class follows the Indiana University syllabus for the course and incorporates college-level instructional materials. The tuition for each class is $150 ($50 per semester hour). No supplemental fees (activity, technology, athletic or health) will be assessed. Additionally, those students eligible for the Federal Free and Reduced Lunch program will have their tuition waived. Students who may not meet the criteria and are not accepted into the program may, however, still take the coursework and benefit from experiencing an authentic college curriculum. At this point, 168 students have enrolled for next fall, taking a total of 240 classes. Specifics are available at acp.indiana.edu.

OUR VIEW

SB1 just another dose of the same bad medicine Some movie sequels we’re delighted to see in theaters, and some seem to have been conceived even though nobody wanted them. The arrival of Illinois Senate Bill 1 this year appears to fall into the latter camp. SB 1 is largely a tweaked version of the previous Legislature’s much-maligned Senate Bill 16, which generated a lot of headlines before meeting its end when it failed to come to a vote in the House. SB 16 would have restructured how funding was distributed around the state based on the neediness of the student populations in each district. Critics said the bill would unfairly take from wealthier districts without boosting overall education funding – DuPage County schools, for instance, were in line to lose $140 million in funding. SB 16’s death was lauded in many corners as a good first step toward real education funding reform. “This is a huge success for the suburban taxpayers who would have been fleeced by the provisions of SB 16,” state Rep. Ron Sandack, R-Downers Grove, said in December. That success appears to have been a fleeting one as SB 1 now rears its ugly head. Like its predecessor, the bill hits west suburban districts disproportionately, with massive reductions in funding. The Illinois State Board of Education has projected what it would do for each district in the state, based on 2014 numbers, and it’s not pretty. For instance: • DuPage High School District 88 would lose $3.7 million of its $4.5 million in funding. • Elmhurst High School District 205 would be forced to forgo $4.6 million of the $6 million

it got in 2014. • Community High School District 99 in Downers Grove would give up more than $3 million from the $3.9 million it got in 2014. • West Chicago District 33, on the other hand, would get a $5.3 million boost on top of its $14.4 million in funding. • The city of Chicago schools would gain more than $267 million in funding, on top of the about $1.3 billion it got for 2014. (Just to be clear, no one would actually give up money they got in 2014; these numbers just apply the proposed formula to what was paid out that year.) “This approach to education funding [in SB 1] is a pure winners/losers scenario, which is not the way that I think we should approach education funding from the state perspective,” said state Sen. Chris Nybo, R-Elmhurst, during a recent visit to the Suburban Life newsroom. Gutting the finances of relatively healthy districts to try to prop up currently underfunded districts is a terrible solution. When the push for SB 16 was in full swing, many legislators and school officials told Suburban Life that some amount of reapportionment was fair, but that the dollar amounts being considered were catastrophic to the areas that would lose money. They still are catastrophic under SB 1. It’s good that school funding formulas are under scrutiny because the current model is terrible, too. This conversation needs to continue. But this bill does more harm than good, and it should be scrapped.

SOUND OFF

‘School should never be used as a free baby-sitting service’ What a firestorm [that has resulted from my initial Sound Off], but I stand by my theory. To the parent making tough choices, if you are already struggling to achieve the American Dream, then adding children to the mix won’t be helping your situation. Next, one should never need two incomes to support a family. If you do, you do either need a better paying job or you are living above your means. To the reader that worries about someone dying or becoming disabled, that’s what insurance policies are for ... Whatever your situation, the school system should never be used as a free baby-sitting service.

That is a complaint the city of Elmhurst and City Centre have heard before but something they have no control of because it is between the owners and the landlords, Paravola and Assistant City Manager Mike Kopp said. Kopp said with the recent developments like the Hahn Street project, Addison Avenue parking deck and Wilder Crossing condos, he and the city are working hard to make downtown more vibrant and easily accessible to locals,

visitors and commuters. Elmhurst also recently approved the hiring of a consulting firm to update the city’s downtown development plan. Watrous and Aspan have no doubt downtown will look great after those projects are completed, but Watrous said she is concerned about the effects of construction on business in the short term. “But what about the businesses, the people right now?” she said.

Health pros give advice at expo By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com Getting fit can be a daunting task for many, whether you have been active before or not. The B Fit B Active Expo, hosted by the Kane County Chronicle and Suburban Life Media, featured a panel of health and fitness experts from around the area discussing ways to help jumpstart and sustain a healthy lifestyle. The five professionals covered ways to take care of your body, how to set attainable fitness goals and how to turn a passion for exercise and nutrition into a successful business during the event Wednesday at Cantigny Park in Wheaton. CrossFit trainer and nutritional enthusiast Britt Crow said fitness, no matter the sport or exercise of choice, was about choosing long-term habits, not shortterm goals. “It’s finding a fitness routine that’s going to give you something you can do for life,” she said. Crow joined Ron Anderson, who started several fitness and medical centers, world-class Ironman competitor and nutritional expert Ryan Giuliano, injury prevention expert and triathlon competitor Dr. Kevan Ketterling and fitness entrepreneur Chris Leathers on the panel. Anderson stressed that those looking to make a change in their fitness habits need to drop the monthly binge on green detox drinks and make it permanent. Properly setting goals is important for reaching them, Giuliano said. Ketterling said throughout the training experience, it’s important not only to have proper cross-training and form but to listen to your body when it tells you to take a break. Leathers said he encourages people of all ages to start and chase what they want in business and in fitness.

For our main course, we opted for sesame chicken and mu shu pork. Our waiter served the latter tableside, deftly filling and folding five pancakes for us as we watched. The pork was shredded and seasoned with garlic and ginger and was very flavorful. The accompanying vegetable medley, which included cabbage, carrots, mushrooms and onions, tasted wonderfully fresh. WHEATON – The location, decor and ambience have changed, but the service and food remain impeccable. Lu’s Sushi & Chinese, which closed its Glen Ellyn doors last summer after the owners lost their lease, opened a Wheaton location in the fall to much fanfare. While patrons of the old Lu’s will notice the restaurant’s email and phone number remain the same even after the move – something the owners kept intact to ensure they would not lose their faithful fan base – the new space provides appealing upgrades. There are about 15 tables in the main dining room, as well as an adjacent private area separated by a string curtain. Asian lanterns hang from the ceiling and the walls are adorned with green leaf prints, consistent with the all-natural theme, which also resonates in the restaurant’s many plants and the ornately carved vegetables turned into flower garnishes that add their visual pop to some main courses. For more culinary drama, the new Lu’s positioned the sushi bar and open kitchen next to the dining area so customers can watch as their Chinese and Japanese meals are prepared. The menu remains extensive, offering Chinese dishes including hand-pulled noodle soups, along with sushi, sashimi and traditional Japanese fare. Beer, wine and sake are part of the full bar’s selections. My date and I arrived about 5 p.m. on a Friday, narrowly beating the happy hour patrons – the restaurant soon became comfortably crowded, which I took as a sign the place has been well-received by both new and old clientele. We were seated immediately and promptly welcomed by our server. Those unfamiliar with Lu’s or Asian cuisine might be a little overwhelmed with the

York’s Kyle Coughlin delivers a pitch April 13 in a game against Downers Grove South. Mark Busch - mbusch@shawmedia.com

Lessons learned as Dukes turn it around By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – After a shocking 1-11 start, it seemed things could only get better because they couldn’t get worse for York baseball. Kyle Coughlin and the Dukes began what they hope to be an extended turnaround by beating Lyons Township two games out of three in a West Suburban Silver series. In a meeting between the two teams which shared the conference title last season, York beat LT ace Tom Hickey 3-0 in Friday’s opener in Western Springs with a shutout from pitcher Matt Sabatini. The Lions won 8-0 on Saturday before the Dukes bats won the game 10-4 on Monday in Elmhurst. “It was good to get the series win,”

York coach Dave Kalal said. “I said at the beginning of the year that we had a huge learning curve with these younger players at the varsity level and our pitching staff, and we’re still learning. We’re still trying to figure things out. We’re making some major adjustments as we go along here.” Coughlin, one of the returning seniors on the roster who played a big role in that conference title, is hoping the younger players on the team have learned from the slow start. “We knew we had to teach these juniors how to win a conference championship and how to rebound,” Coughlin said. “Us seniors know that so we reflected on that as the captains of the team.” The Dukes are 2-4 in the conference, so making another run at the Silver

title would require a scorching-hot finish. After committing 36 errors in the first nine games of the season, including 17 in back-to-back games against WSS leader Oak Park-River Forest, according to the Dukes’ own scorebook, all the Dukes want to do is refine each of the three major phases of the game. “The beginning of the season we struggled,” Coughlin said. “We’re a young team. The first nine games we had 36 errors. The last few games we have limited it to one [per game], so we’re actually coming together.” The pitching has been the most consistent aspect for the Dukes. Sabatini gave up six hits and no walks in the series opener. Coughlin earned the win Monday with eight strikeouts against two walks, seven hits and three earned runs in a complete game.

Kalal mentioned Joe Polowsky, Matt Riecker and Cam Fowler as pitchers doing well in addition to the “phenomenal” pitching of Sabatini and Coughlin. Monday’s 10-run performance will give optimism for the offense. Coughlin was 3 for 4 and Sam Craggs had a 4-for-4 day. Mike Homan and Paul Schlitter each had two hits as part of York’s 14-hit game. “Eventually things have got to start turning our way,” Kalal said. “Sometimes that just happens with baseball. It’s a funny game. We’ve been so close the last 2 ½, three weeks as far as just getting over that hump. We’ve been playing good baseball. [Monday] was really the first day where we put all three phases together with the offense, defense and pitching.”

Outlook: The defending Class 3A state champions have a strong team once again, although they do have a lot of spots to refill after graduating a number of standouts. Matt Plowman is the only athlete on the team who competed individually at state last year. He took fifth in the 800-meter run and took the indoor West Suburban Silver title in that event this winter. He also claimed the indoor title in the 3,200.

Outlook: It’s quality over quantity for the Trojans this spring. Despite not having a big squad, Timothy Christian has a pair of standouts who could make some noise at the end of the season. Andy Margason qualified for state in the 110-meter hurdles last season and took the indoor conference title in both the 55 high hurdles and 55 low hurdles. Xavier Ross has been an immediate standout for the Trojans. He won

Brothers Darius Conrad and Darrion Conrad give the Blazers a pair of fast sprinters. They have both earned points individually and made AT’s sprint relays very competitive. “The most positive aspect of this season compared to previous seasons is our depth,” coach Bruce Kelsay said. “We are competitive in all events and show our biggest improvements in the hurdles and sprint relays.”

by Kendall Fletcher. Chicago’s Press continued her dominance after the interval. In the 50th minute, she set up a wide open Hemmings in the area, only to see the Colorado native’s low shot comfortably saved by a well-positioned Solo. Three minutes later, Red Stars captain Lori Chalupny released Press one-on-one with the Reign goalkeeper, who used all of her experience and class to defy her national teammate’s attempted fake-out and deny the opportunity. Seattle nearly punished the home side for the missed chances when Karina LeBlanc parried Kim Little’s 63rd-minute stinger wide of the frame for a stunning save. Ten minutes later, the spotlight was back on Reign shot-stopper Solo, who did an excellent job of tipping DiBernardo’s powerful drive around the post. Just when it seemed the Red Stars might have to settle for a draw in their home opener, Press produced a final piece of brilliance to send the home fans into ecstasy. The California native shocked the opposition backline by sprinting on to a bouncing ball and confidently slotting past Solo for the dramatic stoppage-time winner. The Chicago Red Stars hope to make it consecutive wins to start the season when they host superstar Alex Morgan and Portland Thorns FC on April 25. Chicago, Illinois – Professional women’s soccer outfit Chicago Red Stars opened its National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season with a bang on Saturday night, defeating defending regular season champions Seattle Reign FC 3-2, courtesy of a dramatic stoppage-time winner by forward Christen Press. The U.S. Women’s National Team star had a standout performance in the victory, as she bagged two goals as well as the assist on teammate Jen Hoy’s first-half tally. After an uneventful opening half hour, Seattle were first to get on the board. U.S. international Megan Rapinoe swung in a corner kick from the right and saw the ball make its way past the outstretched frame of Chicago goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc and to the far post, where it was nodded home by Beverly Yanez. The home side pulled level mere moments later, as Vanessa DiBernardo’s delicate header found its way through to Press and the 26-year-old made it 1-1 with a clinical finish past Reign netminder Hope Solo. Energized by the equalizer, the Red Stars kept pushing and took the lead in the 32nd minute. Press got in behind the Seattle defense once more – this time on an exquisite long pass by defender Taryn Hemmings – and the striker’s low centering ball picked out Hoy at the doorstep for a simple tap-in. The lead was not to last, however, as another Rapinoe corner in the 39th minute saw the ball cleared back out to the midfielder, whose cross in from the right was converted via close-range header

Feigh gets athletic director Hall of Fame call By SCOTT SCHMID

Longtime Hinsdale South athletic director and Elmhurst resident Tim Feigh will be inducted into the Illinois Athletic Directors Association Hall of Fame on May 2.

sschmid@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – Winning an award is nothing new for Tim Feigh, who compiled a long list of achievements during nearly a quarter century as a high school athletic administrator. But the Elmhurst resident, and former athletic director at York High School, Morton and Hinsdale South, certainly feels honored to receive his latest recognition. Feigh will be inducted into the Illinois Athletic Directors Association Hall of Fame on May 2. “It’s a great honor,” said Feigh, who is in his third year of retirement and was voted in unanimously in his first year on the ballot. “It’s a nice reward after 24 years of being an athletic administrator.” Hinsdale South baseball coach and assistant athletic director Paul Hoel was hired three different times by Feigh, both at his current school and at York. “I was fortunate to have a friend like that,” Hoel said. “He hired me at York, he came here [Hinsdale South] and hired me, and when I got out he gave me another opportunity to get

back in. “Tim was great and fun to work with. He’s a great guy and a friend and just a tireless worker. He deserves that honor. No one works harder than Tim Feigh.” Feigh’s life these days is a little bit more laid back, though he still officiates high school varsity football in the fall and worked one of the state championship games last season. He also has lent a hand to Riverside Brookfield athletic director Art Ostrow, helping out at the Bulldogs’ Thanksgiving and Christmas basketball tournaments, and has had get-togethers with other former ADs. Those

personal relationships is what he misses most about the job. “That was my work family. You spend six days a week with them, 1012 hours a day,” Feigh said. “Sure you had your differences, but we were a family. ... You miss the camaraderie.” As for what he is most proud of looking back at his career, Feigh said that was a tough question. “I guess that I was a coach’s AD, to be honest with you,” he said. “When you surround yourself with good people, it makes your job a heck of a lot easier. And I was fortunate with each school and the great people I worked with.

About Tim Feigh PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE n Hinsdale South athletic director: 1994-2012 n York athletic director: 1990-94 n Morton athletic director/department chair for health, physical and driver education: 1988-90 HONORS n Illinois Athletic Directors Association AA Athletic Administrator of the Year (2003-04) n Illinois Wrestling Coach’s & Officials Association Class AA Athletic Director of the Year (2006) n National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association State Award of Merit (2006) “And I was fortunate that at every place I went, the principals allowed me to work with the academic chairs and allowed me to hire not only great coaches but great people. Mentoring young coaches and seeing them grow, that’s what it is all about, and also seeing the kids grow.”
