On September 11, 2024, the City of Elmhurst dedicated the First Responders Memorial Plaza and Sculpture adjacent to Fire Station No. 2.
Designed by Elmhurst artist Jason Peot, the sculpture features twin towers linked by a section of commuter rail recovered from underneath the fallen buildings and given to Elmhurst for sending responders to New York. While more than $180,000 in cash and gift-in-kind donations have been raised, commemorative bricks can be purchased for only $300 apiece.
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
JENNIFER VEREMIS, President & CEO
Dear Members of the Elmhurst Community,
I am honored to be the new President and CEO of the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce and Industry. As a dedicated long-time Chamber member, small business owner and Elmhurst resident for more than 25 years, I’m humbled to begin this new chapter as the first female to assume this title in our Chamber’s 106-year history. I’ve always felt a deep connection to this community and am excited to bring my experience and passion to this position.
You may already know me from my previous role as Director of Member Services, where I had the pleasure of connecting with many of you and hearing your stories and aspirations. As the new President and CEO, I’ll continue building on the strong foundation, ensuring we remain true to our mission of promoting an environment that creates success for local businesses and our community.
Specifically, we foster connections and growth through diverse programs and events. From our comprehensive business directory to networking gatherings and cost-effective marketing options. Here are a few ways we bring businesses together:
• Multi-chamber breakfast, luncheons and expos
• “State of Our City” Mayoral Address Membership Breakfast
• Annual ECCI Awards Gala
• Networking on the 9s Golf Outing
Explore our annual Community Directory and discover the fantastic companies and organizations that make our community thrive.
Our Chamber’s strength comes from the incredible dedication of our members, board, and staff. Your active involvement has been essential to our continued success, and we’re deeply grateful for your contributions and unwavering support.
As we move forward, I want to express my sincere gratitude to John Quigley for his exceptional leadership over the past 25 years. His dedication and vision have been instrumental in shaping our Chamber into the thriving organization it is today. John’s devotion is evident in our successful 2024 events, including a friendly roast in his honor that raised more than $5,000 for Elmhurst American Legion THB Post 187. Since 2000, he has served as Co-Chair with Ralph Pechanio for the Elmhurst Memorial Day Parade Committee and Veterans Day Ceremony. On behalf of the entire Chamber, I extend our appreciation to John for his years of outstanding service and leadership.
I’m honored to lead this organization into the future and work together to achieve even greater heights. Together, we share a vision that is even more prosperous, connected and vibrant. I’m eager to work towards this vision with all of you.
ARTS & CULTURE
Elmhurst boasts a virtual cultural campus adjacent to its Central Business District (CBD), where diverse elements—art and history, lectures and literature, music and theatre— blend together in a recipe that satisfies all the sense. Within close proximity are the following attractions, sites and venues:
• Elmhurst Art Museum, Elmhurst Public Library, Elmhurst Park District’s Conservatory/Formal Gardens, Veterans’ Memorial and Wilder Mansion within Wilder Park;
• Old Main (built in 1879 and on the National Register of Historic Places), Hammerschmidt Memorial Chapel, Mill Theatre and A.C. Buehler Library on the grounds of Elmhurst University’s arboretum campus; and
• Elmhurst History Museum housed in the Glos Mansion.
¢ MUSEUMS
In celebration of International Museum Day, Elmhurst’s two museums open their doors to the public for free in May – a tradition more than a quarter-century old.
Named the “Best Suburban Art Museum in Chicago” by Chicago Magazine, the Art Museum is known for the quality of its visual arts, architecture and educational programs. Along with its permanent collection, EAM showcases traveling exhibitions, juried competitions, and group and individual exhibitions. Relocated to Wilder Park in 1997, EAM incorporates galleries, an Education Center and the former Robert R. McCormick house (built 1952 and purchased 1991), one of three residences designed by internationally renowned architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. In 2018, the McCormick house was separated from the museum building as part of a four phase project to return the interior to its original layout.
Operated by the City of Elmhurst since 1957, the History Museum engages residents and visitors into history with collections, exhibits and education. EHM has been located in the historically significant Glos Mansion—the former home of Elmhurst's first village president, Henry L. Glos, and his wife, Lucy—in downtown Elmhurst for all but a decade when the Wilder Mansion (1965-75) served as its home. EHM also manages Churchville Schoolhouse, a restored circa 1850s one-room Bensenville schoolhouse listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
¢ PERFORMING ARTS
Elmhurst University hosts and sponsors concerts, plays, art displays and lectures, including the secondoldest collegiate Jazz Festival (founded 1968) in Hammerschmidt Chapel in late February and Annual Summer Extravaganza jazz concert on the University Mall each June.
The Elmhurst Park District provides a stage for residents to learn dance, music, theatre, art and cinema, and business professionals teach all the performing arts, sacred/inspirational choir music (Spirito! Singers), modern dance (DeForest Dance Academy and Evolution Dance Academy) and more.
The Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra (founded 1961) performs an annual season of symphonic concerts at Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church and other locations, while the Elmhurst Choral Union sings classical masterworks and great choral music of all eras in concert with full professional orchestra and soloists and at a mini-concert of opera, pop and Broadway.
For more than 20 years, GreenMan Theatre Troupe has staged a half dozen or so plays annually at various Elmhurst locations..
¢ PATRONS
The Artists’ Guild is a membership organization that sponsors artist demonstrations and local exhibits, and maintains one of EAM’s four galleries.
The Elmhurst Heritage Foundation, a 2007 merger of EHM’s Foundation and the City’s Historical Commission, is an advocacy voice and support group for History Museum exhibits, programs, services and events. The Foundation will stage its 10th Annual Elmhurst Craft Beer Fest fundraiser on the History Museum grounds in September of 2025.
Organized by the Elmhurst Art Museum, Art in the Park: A Juried Show of Fine Art, Craft and Design, which returns to Wilder Park in May.
The Elmhurst Symphony Association provides financial and organizational support to the ESO.
Now in partnership with developer The Ryan Companies US, the Elmhurst Centre for Performing Arts (ECPA) is fundraising to build a theatre in downtown Elmhurst on First Street property purchased late in 2019.

Members promote their goods and services to residents and businesses through a variety of ways:
• A user-friendly “responsive” website (elmhurstchamber.org) featuring a member business directory, Hot Deals coupons, job postings, business news, community calendar and more;
• Postings to our Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram social media pages;
• Every-Door-Direct-Mailed Elmhurst Community Directory;

The Elmhurst Chamber has forged strong business partnerships with the City of Elmhurst—including the Economic Development Commission—and special interest business organizations such as Elmhurst City Centre, Spring Road Business Association and the York & Vallette Business Association as well as the DuPage
Convention & Visitors Bureau and the City’s Explore Elmhurst Advisory Committee to promote the visitor and tourism industry.
Our Chamber and the City have partnered on shop local campaigns to educate residents on the importance of spending their dollars in town, generating hundreds of thousands of dollars in additional retail and food and beverage sales taxes, allowing the Elmhurst City Council to keep the property tax levy among the lowest in DuPage County.
We also represent the interests of businesses on legislative issues at the local, county, state and federal levels. Each January, our Chamber hosts both a “State of Our City” Mayoral Address Membership Breakfast and State of DuPage County Multi-Chamber Luncheon and Business Expo.
A leader in business education, we partner with fellow chambers of commerce, business associations, businesses, not-for-profits and individuals to provide both niche and mass-appeal programs.
Annual special events include the Awards Gala (March), multi-chamber Economic Outlook Luncheon (April), New Teachers Luncheon (August), Golf Outing (September) and multi-chamber October Luncheon, while our members host the monthly Membership Breakfasts and Business After Hours.
As a select United State Chamber of Commerce Federated Membership partner, ECCI is recognized in Illinois and nationally as an organization that is committed to excellence in all of its endeavors.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT & BUSINESS ASSOCIATIONS
Economic development is facilitated by City of Elmhurst staff, the Elmhurst Economic Development Commission (EEDC) and Ken Bartels Consulting, with support from the Mayor and Elmhurst City Council, and input from our Chamber and other partnering constituents.
Since 2022, Heather Bereckis, former Parks and Recreation Superintendent in Hinsdale, has served as Business Development Coordinator.
Their mission is to work effectively to retain, expand, promote and attract business and industry within Elmhurst so as to enhance the local economic climate, increase the City's tax base and value of commerce, and create employment opportunities.
City officials implement specific economic tools— public-private partnerships, tax-increment financing (TIF), retail grants, sales tax abatements, special service areas (SSA) and more—to encourage new development and redevelopment.
¢ BUSINESS DISTRICT
Keyed by Elmhurst City Centre downtown, our City is blessed with a vibrant and diverse business community spread across seven Business District and two Business Parks.
Other Business Districts include Spring Road, York and Vallette streets, North Elmhurst (covers York north of North Avenue, Lake Street and Grand Avenue), South Elmhurst (covers South York and Butterfield Road), Route 83 and St. Charles Road (includes Elmhurst Crossing Shopping Center), and Route 83 and North Avenue. Business Parks are located in northwest Elmhurst (bordered by York, Lake and Grand) and off Route 83 south of St. Charles.
¢ TIF DISTRICTS
TIF Districts remain downtown (TIF6), around Lake Street (TIF5) and North York (TIF 4), following the 2019 expiration of TIF 3 (Elmhurst Crossing).
Millions of dollars in new construction in downtown Elmhurst—including another luxury apartment complex (Vyne on Haven)—have added hundreds of residents to the mix, while the Metra Train Station reconstruction ($35 million) and proposed Centre for Performing Arts ($35 million) in the offing.
At Home (The Home Décor Superstore), Whole Foods Market and Kohl’s are the anchor tenants at Elmhurst Crossing.
¢ RETAIL GRANTS AND INCENTIVES
The city’s Retail Business Grant Program (established in 2002) leverages the reinvestment of TIF-captured property tax dollars in redeveloping area to enhance the mix of retail for shoppers, while generating millions of dollars in private investment and developing new sources retail and food and beverage sales tax revenue.
The Retail Business Grant Committee has awarded grants up to $10,000 to some 100 retail operations (up to five per year). The mix of grant recipients includes boutique-style clothing, footwear and accessories, jewelry, a variety of specialty foods and beverage providers, home design and décor, hobby, entertainment venues and restaurants.
The Grant Committee is comprised of representatives the City Council’s Finance, Council Affairs and Administrative Services Committee (F,CA&AS), Elmhurst City Centre, City Administration and our Chamber.
Incentive programs for signage, façade and life safety (sprinkler systems and Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility) are now also available in each TIF District.

EDUCATION & SCHOOLS
Acommunity’s educational system is the bedrock of family life. In Elmhurst, a unique mix of public, private and parochial schools, plus specialty education centers, provide learning opportunities spanning from preschool through college.
For 30 years prior to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic, the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce and Industry and its members treated new teachers to Elmhurst at a welcoming luncheon in August and have done so in person since 2023.
¢ WHAT COLLEGE OUGHT TO BE
Elmhurst University (founded 1871) is a premier, comprehensive, four-year educational institution that blends liberal learning and professional preparation to educate students for life in a global society.
Elmhurst accomplishes its mission by providing a range of high-quality academic offerings—more than 70 majors and 15 pre-professional programs of study in 25 undergraduate departments, and 22 master’s degree programs in four fields and nine graduate certificate programs—to some 3,460 undergraduate and graduate students.
The University is recognized for the excellence of its programs and faculty. The average class has 18 students with a student to faculty ratio of 13-to-1.
Elmhurst consistently ranks as one of the Midwest’s best values in higher education, according to U.S. News & World Report, and Money and Forbes magazines.

The District’s 14 schools—eight elementary schools (K-5), three middle schools (6-8), York Community High School (9-12), early childhood center/preschool and transition
program—currently services more than 8,000 students who reside primarily in Elmhurst (93%), plus small portions of Oak Brook, Bensenville and Addison.
A 2018 referendum for $168.5 million (endorsed by the ECCI Board of Directors) has rebuilt Lincoln and Field elementary schools and funded remodeling projects throughout District 205 with only projects at York and the Madison Early Childhood Center yet to be completed.
District 205 faculty and staff are among the finest and best qualified in the State of Illinois, with 73.6% holding a Master’s degree or higher.
District 205 students consistently perform well above state averages on all standardized tests; the ACT average composite score is 24.3 (2016).
More than 80% of York’s students participate in at least one extracurricular activity.

Public safety is a major municipal service, with the job of protecting life and property in Elmhurst resting in the professional hands of the Police and Fire departments.
The city’s 18-under curfew is 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 12 midnight on Friday and Saturday. Elmhurst hired its first Constable on Patrol (or COP) in 1882, changed the title to Marshal in 1892 and named its first Chief of Police in 1925.
A volunteer Fire Department was established in 1893, the first Fire Station was built on Schiller Street in 1884 and 1924 brought the first paid fireman. Since 1941, the city has operated at least two Fire Stations.
¢ 24-HOUR PROTECTION
Elmhurst residents enjoy their community thanks to its low crime rate thanks to the efforts of full-time and part-time sworn officers, K-9 unit, community service officers and civilian support staff are focused on problem solving with strong input from residents. Officers patrol around the clock in marked and unmarked cars, and on foot.
Operational since 1992, the C.O.P.P. unit (five officers, one supervisor) works with residents on a proactive partnership to prevent crime and resolve community problems.
Programs range from a Peer Jury for non-violent, firsttime juvenile offenders to SALT, which brings senior and lawmen together.
¢ TAKING THE HEAT OFF
Elmhurst is among select group of Illinois communities and municipalities nationwide with an Insurance Services Office (ISO) Class I protection rating, thanks to its 11 paid officers, 33 firefighters and 12 contracted paramedics.
At least 11 firefighters and four paramedics on duty daily, providing Advanced Life Support services and manning firefighting equipment. They are also trained to respond to medical, hazardous materials, technical above and below grade rescues, and vehicle extrication.
Fire prevention is emphasized through building inspections, construction reviews, public education programs, and the sale of smoke detectors and fire extinguishers.

CITY’S HERITAGE IS CHISELED IN STONE HISTORY OF ELMHURST
Among Chicago Magazine’s No. 1 places to live, the City of Elmhurst is a community rich in its heritage, invested in its present and focused towards its future.
The city boasts a proud history that dates back to the Potawatomi Indian tribe members who settled along Salt Creek just south of the Elmhurst of today.
By the 1830s, European immigrants staked claims along Salt Creek. Hill Cottage (413 South York Street) was built in 1834 as a tavern and stage coach stop. In 1842, Ohio native Gerry Bates formally established this community in the area of “treeless land” that is now Elmhurst’s City Centre. Cottage Hill, as the community was known back in 1845, was renamed Elmhurst in 1869 for the many elm trees planted along the streets.
Elmhurst-Chicago Stone (founded in 1883) is the city's oldest business.
While a popular escape for
businessmen following the Great Chicago Fire of 1871—the same year that German immigrants founded Elmhurst College— Elmhurst remained a farming community until the 1930s, when the population reached 15,000 and suburbia began moving in on its rural character.
From 1950 to 1970, the population grew to more than 50,000-bringing with it a building boom of housing subdivisions, shopping centers, business districts, industrial parks, schools and more.
Even in a tight economy, Elmhurst attracts new construction and redevelopment projects—totaling a combined $250 million in commercial and residential—in both the public and private sectors. While not yet at the prepandemic triple digits, new home construction in Elmhurst continues to rank among the leaders in DuPage County.
Elmhurst enjoys a cultural campus (see Arts and Culture on page 8) adjacent to its Central
Business District (CBD) with the close proximity of the Elmhurst Art Museum, Elmhurst Park District’s Conservatory/Formal Gardens, Elmhurst Public Library and Veterans Memorial in Wilder Park; Old Main, Hammerschmidt Memorial Chapel, Mill Theatre and A.C. Buehler Library on Elmhurst University’s arboretum campus; and Elmhurst Historical Museum in the Glos Mansion.
Old Main (built in 1878) is on the Historical Register and the Glos Mansion (built in 1892) as the home of Henry Glos, Elmhurst's first Village President, while the McCormack House (built in 1952), designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, is part of the Art Museum’s campus.
Famed architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright and Walter Burley Griffin have put their design prints on Elmhurst’s housing stock.
Providing a spiritual core are some 30 houses of worship, some of which are rooted in Elmhurst's birth.

VISITOR & TOURISM
TOURISM VITAL TO ELMHURST’S ECOMONY
Guests checking into any of Elmhurst’s four hotels— Courtyard by Marriott, Extended Stay America, Clarion Hotel Conference Center and SpringHill Suites—not only enjoy a great stay, they also contribute to the city’s visitor and tourism initiatives.
Elmhurst funds a variety of activities to enhance tourism, cultural life and commerce using a portion of the monies generated by a room rental tax (4%) at the four hotels, as much as $600,000 annually.
Hotel/motel tax revenue generates funding for both the City’s Explore Elmhurst initiatives such as the summer Explore Elmhurst Express Trolley campaign and Community Grant Program, which provides financial support for the museums, parades and special events.
According to the State of Illinois Office Bureau of Tourism, every $1 spent on meeting our visitor promotion generates $10 collected in state and local tax revenue.
In 2023, 109.4 million domestic and 2.6 million international visitors to Illinois spent $47.2 billion – an increase of one million visitors and $3 billion in revenue from 2022 –surpassing 2019’s pre-pandemic levels. Direct visitor spending generated a total economic impact of $82.6 billion in 2023 including direct and induced impacts, which sustained more than 448,300 jobs and generated $6.6 billion in state and local taxes.
In 2023, DuPage County generated $3.18 billion in tourism revenue— second only to Cook County and the City of Chicago—netting some $314.7 million (up 5.4 percent)
in combined tax receipts for the State of Illinois ($219.2 million) and local municipalities ($95.1 million), Elmhurst among them.
Tourism in Illinois continues to rank as one of the state’s largest employers, with 340,000 jobs directly related to meetings and visitor industry. In 2023, DuPage’s tourism industry employed some 26,000 workers earning a total payroll of nearly $935.9 million (up 4.4 percent).
¢ EXPLORE ELMHURST
The City of Elmhurst partners with stakeholder hotels, businesses and organizations to entice visitors and tourists to “Explore Elmhurst” through mutually beneficial promotion of the city’s arts and culture, festivals, museums, parades, and special events and attractions.
Aside from museum patrons, visitors come to Elmhurst in large numbers for the Memorial Day and St. Patrick’s Day parades, Art in the Park, Elmhurst College Jazz Festival, Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot, Rock The Block, Elmhurst Farmers’ Market and more.
In 2023, the city unveiled a new Explore Elmhurst website and logo to enhance visitor and tourism efforts.
¢ DUMORE IN DUPAGE
The DuPage Convention & Visitors Bureau’s mission is to actively promote DuMore DuPage to individual travelers and meeting/
event planners as an enticing destination for both business and leisure travel in order to enhance the economic fiber of the County.
As certified by the State of Illinois Bureau of Tourism and Destination Marketing Accreditation Program (DMAP), the DCVB promotes DuPage’s multi-billion-dollar tourism industry and markets the accommodations, attractions, events, dining, shopping, and sports and recreation for its 38 community and 100-plus business members.
First unveiled at the September 2019 DCVB Annual Meeting, programs within the organization’s strategic plan, titled “GPS: A Tourism Roadmap,” were designed to generate $650 million in new visitor spending by the year 2025.
Created in 2019, the DuPage Sports Commission (DSC) is responsible for recruiting, retaining and facilitating sporting events. Since then, DuPage hosted both the National Travelers Bowling League (June 2022) and United State Bowling Convention (April 2021), USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships (December 2020) and Intelligentsia Cup/DuPage Triple Crown (July 2019)—four new events designed to generate $2 million in new revenue.
In 2024, the DCVB marketed “Olmec Trails: Culture and Legacy,” which include the Spring Road Business District’s sculpture and the Elmhurst Art Museum's Picasso: Fifty Years Later.
City of Elmhurst Communications Manager Kassondra Schref serves as a member of the DCVB Board of Directors.
