With social distancing and required masks, Mr. and Mrs. Claus welcomed 21 children for a photo in front of the firetruck, plus a wrapped gift and a bag of treats. The Erie Fire Department recently recognized Jax Kotlarsz, 6, for his act of bravery at a recent emergency scene. Jax was hanging out with his grandpa Ted Bohnert alone at their house, when his grandpa was involved in a machinery accident. He remained calm and called for help. Emergency crews from both Erie Fire and Erie Ambulance responded and were able to free Jax’s grandpa from the equipment. He was able to escape the incident with only minor injuries thanks to Jax’s quick actions. Erie Fire Department, Whiteside County Sheriff’s Department, and Erie Police personnel presented Jax with a “Certificate of Bravery” from the EFPD, a “Junior Police Card” from Jax Kotlarsz, center, poses with Erie Fire personnel Scott Miner, Nathan Schnitzler, and Tod McCullough, the Whiteside County Sheriff’s Deputy Jeff Wunderlich, and Whiteside County Sheriff John Booker. Armstrong to fill Erie trustee vacancy By SARAH FORD For Shaw Media

A new trustee was seated during the Erie Village Board meeting on Dec. 8. President Marcia Smith appointed Mark Armstrong to fill the remainder of Chad Weaver’s 4-year term, which he resigned last month after getting elected to the Whiteside County Board. After the board’s approval, Armstrong was given the oath of office. The term will go through May, after the winning trustees of April 2021 election are seated. Smith also announced that the Erie School District paid $41,020.06 for half of the street work done this summer around the school. She thanked them for their assistance in the project.

The public works director said he will be getting estimates for the cost of seal coating and asphalt for other streets designated by the board for next year’s spring and summer projects. In other action, the board: • Discussed the Whiteside County Dispatch Center’s cost increase to the village from $420 in 2020 to $7,432.19 for 2021. The dispatching fees will continue to go up incrementally for the next five years. • Passed an ordinance to allow all night parking on Main St. from the intersection of 9th Ave. towards 8th Ave. except when there is 2” of snowfall. The municipal lot at the water plant will be closed to public parking. • Voted to allow a handicapped parking space near Legends Bar & Grill.

• Passed an ordinance to borrow funds from Erie State Bank to purchase a 2021 Ford Truck. • Voted to accept the levy ordinance as presented. • Approved the purchase of a 16’ utility trailer from 3D Trailer Sales in Fulton for $3,180, which includes licensing. • Voted to give $150 Christmas bonuses to employees Joel Papineau, Brandon Bentley, Shannon Decker, Rollie Elder, Brian Hawk, and Jessica Adams, $200 to Teresa Adamson, and $250 to Shaun Meier. • Thanked Revitalize Erie for the successful Christmas parade this year. • Reported sales tax for July at $7,436.88 and August at $6,719.89; recycling for October was 18,880 pounds.

DIXON – The Lee County jail detainee who was found unresponsive Dec. 11, was 43-year-old Gayla J. Grossman, of Fenton in rural Whiteside County, Sheriff John Simonton confirmed last week. Grossman was taken from KSB Hospital in Dixon to St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, where she died Monday afternoon, Dec. 14, Simonton said in an email. Simonton said Grossman “did not survive her injuries,” but declined to explain what led to Grossman being found unresponsive. He did not identify her cause of death. “The investigation is ongoing, therefore, it is imperative that we allow that process to take place, to avoid any assumptions or inference,” Simonton said in the email. Without identifying Grossman or her gender, a news release Friday evening, Dec. 11, said that she was

found during a routine cell check around 11:30 a.m. Friday morning, and that she was in critical condition at an undisclosed hospital. Deputies performed life-saving measures, Gayla Grossman and Grossman’s immediate family was notified, the release said. Simonton added Tuesday, Dec. 15, that “this incident” still is under investigation by Whiteside and Ogle County sheriff’s detectives, as is protocol. According to jail records, Grossman was arrested July 19 and charged with violating an order of protection. She was charged July 24 in Lee County Court with aggravated arson, three counts of arson, being a felon in possession of a

weapon, and possession of a firearm without a FOID card. Investigators said she set a pickup truck and a barn on fire, which damaged a nearby barn. According to a probable cause affidavit by Amboy Police Chief Paul Smith, Grossman was caught on home surveillance video July 19 going into a garage and then into a barn on Sterling Road, carrying a gun. After she leaves the barn, flames can be seen coming from inside. The barn was totaled and one next door was damaged, according to the affidavit. The interior of the pickup also was set on fire, the affidavit said. Grossman pleaded not guilty on Aug. 17 and was issued a $200,000 bond, court records show. Another charge – residential burglary – was added Oct. 8, court records show. Her next pretrial hearing was scheduled for Jan. 28.

Hileman named to Wartburg College Dean’s List Kendall Hileman of Port Byron was named to the Wartburg College Fall Term Dean’s List. The college recognized 517 students for Fall Term. The list honors students who earned a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above in at least four course credits during the term. Three of the four course credits have to be graded with a traditional letter grade. Wartburg students take four courses during Fall Term, which runs from September through December.

Nearly 200 wreaths were laid on the graves of veterans at Lusk Memorial Cemetery in Albany on Dec. 19, as the village, Albany Lions Club, police and fire department, and members of the community came together to remember those who have served the country. The event was the annual Wreaths Across America ceremony. PROPHETSTOWN – Carol “Hock” King, 71, of Prophetstown, formerly of New Boston, IL, and Mechanicsville, IL, passed away on Tuesday, December 15, 2020 at her home. Carol was born on Nov. 16, 1949 in Muscatine, Iowa, the daughter of James King and Molly Juhl. She was employed as shift foreman at Products Unlimited and Micron Industries for many years. Carol was also a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles since 1973. Survivors include two daughters, Marci King-Sheffield of Prophetstown and Elizabeth (Kyle) Miller of Ashton;

two sons, Keith Boettcher of Prophetstown, and David Joe (Tracy) Dawson of Live Oak, Florida; one brother, James “Donnie” (Charlene) King of New Boston; 11 grandchildren, Nichole,Kyle, Holli, Tyler, Tristan, Jaydin, Joslin, Lilly, Garrett, Rhett, and Tari; three great grandchildren, Patrick, Paisley, and Carmen; two nieces, Tammie(Dave) Phillips and Tara (Dan) Imler all of New Boston; two great-nieces, Elaine, and Danielle; and one great-nephew, Andrew. MORRISON – Donna VanKampen, 81, of Morrison, died Wednesday, Decem-

ber 16, 2020 at CGH Medical Center in Sterling. A graveside service was held Saturday, Dec. 19, at Grove Hill Cemetery in Morrison. The Morrison Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. A memorial to Ebenezer Reformed Church has been established. Donna was born April 27, 1939, in Morrison, to John and Susan (Birely) Sykes. She graduated from Morrison High School in 1958. On Jan. 2, 1959, she married Leon D. VanKampen in the Spring Valley Presbyterian Church. Donna first worked at General Electric. She later went to work in the Morrison schools’ lunch program because of her love for children. She enjoyed doing that for 12 years. She was a member of Ebenezer Reformed Church in Morrison. Donna enjoyed cooking, baking and flowers, but her greatest joy was her grandchildren. Survivors include her husband, Leon; two daughters, Pamela (Jim) Smith of Morrison, and Becky (David) Hess

FENTON – Gayla Jean Grossman Graham, 43, of Fenton, died Monday, December 14, 2020 at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center, Rockford. A public visitation was held on Friday, December 18th at Gibson-Bode Funeral Home, Erie. Private burial was held at Fenton Cemetery on December 19th. A celebration of Gayla’s life will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to an education fund to be established for Gayla’s children, C/O Stacey McCready. Gayla was born Aug. 4, 1977, the youngest daughter of Craig and Phyllis Graham. She graduated from Erie High School in 1996, then received an associate degree from Clinton Community College and a bachelor’s degree from Ashford University in Clinton. Gayla married Charles Woods in 2004, to which her children Audrey and Nick were born. She was re-married to Jerad Grossman in 2015, to which her son Everett was born. Gayla cherished time with her family, loved holiday gatherings and hearing & telling stories. She loved all things nature and outdoors; fishing, kayaking, exploring, searching for four leaf clovers and tending to her pets. As a young woman, Jeanette worked at Iowa Mutual Insurance in Davenport, Iowa. Born a city girl, she quickly learned the wonders of being a dairy farmer’s wife, worrying about the crops, the weather, and the health of the herd, as well as caring for her beloved lamb, Lucy, marveling at birth of a new calf and the pride of working an organic farm, long before it was the thing to do. After five children came along, she worked many years at Riverdale Schools in Port Byron, making lifelong friends of staff and students, alike. She was stellar at cooking for an army. No one in need was ever turned away. After her retirement, she enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s countless concerts, plays, sporting events and award ceremonies. A devout Catholic, Jeanette was a long-time member of St. John’s Church in Rapids City, where she taught CCD for many years, and most recently a member of St. Malachy’s Church, Geneseo, where she volunteered tirelessly with the SPEC Program. She relied heavily on our Lord for guidance, and her rosary was her constant

He was raised in Denver and graduated in 1942 from North Denver High School. During WWII, he enlisted in the Army Air Force Aviation Cadet Pilot Training Program, graduating as a pilot and second lieutenant in April 1944. He served with the 9th U.S. Air Force, 344th Bomb Group in the European theater of operation in WWII, and after the war ended, volunteered to spend a year participating in the military occupation of Germany.

He was separated from active duty in 1946 and attended the University of Colorado, graduating in 1949 with a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering. Stanley married Ruth Ann Bealer of Morrison, in Denver on Aug. 27, 1948. He continued active participation as a reserve officer of the U.S Air Force, retiring in 1972 with the rank of lieutenant colonel. Stanley was employed by the General Electric Company in Morrison, for over 43 years in various engineering and engineering management positions, retiring from full time employment in 1993. However, he continued to work an additional 19 years for GE doing engineering work on a part time basis until February 2012, for a total of 62 years employment at GE in Morrison. Stanley was a member and past ruling elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Morrison. He was active in several civic organizations and served 21 years on the Board of Morrison Community Hospital, serving 12 years as president of the board during the modernization and expansion ‘rogram of the 1970s and early 1980s He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Reserve Officers Association, the Military Officers Asso

FULTON – Thomas O. “Tom” Warner Sr., 80 died Wednesday, November 25, 2020, at the CGH Medical Center, Sterling. Tom was born Jan. 12, 1940, in Hyannas, Nebraska the son of Dean E. and Katherine D. Warner Linville. He married Thelma J. Burdick on Feb. 29, 1964, in Philadelphia, Pennsyl-

vania. Tom served in the U.S. Navy from 1962–1968, where he served on the USS Pickerel, USS-177 and was a plank owner on the USS Haddo, SSN-604. He was in the Naval Reserves from 1984 - 2004. He was employed by ComEd in Morris and the Quad Cities from 1970 – 1993 and then by the City of Fulton from 1994 –2004. Tom was a member of the Fulton Presbyterian Church, Fulton American Legion Post #402, Fulton City Lodge No. 189 A.F. & A.M., where he served in numerous positions including Master 9 times, Merton Chapter of the Easter Star No. 356 serving as Worthy Patron numerous times, and several Masonic bodies in Illinois. He is survived by his wife, Thelma of Fulton; 1 daughter, Leah (Robert) Kephart of Davenport, Iowa; one son, Thomas O. Just over 9 months since the first case of the coronavirus was reported in Whiteside County, the first COVID-19 vaccine was administered Dec. 17 at CGH Medical Center in Sterling. On Monday, Illinois received 66,000 doses of its first 109,000 dose-shipment of the vaccine developed by the drug companies Pfizer and BioNTech. The remaining 43,000 doses, reserved for the city of Chicago, arrived Dec. 17. The vaccine is reported to be effective in 95% of the people who receive it, and in 94% of people older than 65. It requires two doses, the second of which is to be administered 3 to 4 weeks later. Of the first vaccine shipment, 465 doses were reserved for Whiteside County, which ranks 11th on a list of 50 counties with the highest death per capita rate. All doses arrived in the county Dec. 16. CGH received 400 doses and Morrison Community Hospital collected 65 doses. First injections at CGH started at 6:30 a.m. with a pair of health care personnel who work daily with COVID-19 patients: Dr. Jason Reter, a family medicine specialist, and Pat Zigler, a cardiac and critical care nurse. Both Reter and Zigler in interviews following their injections said that they haven’t felt any side effects or pain from the shots, and that they were humbled to be among the first

to receive the vaccine. “We’ve been thinking about this day for quite a while,” Reter said. “To get vaccinated and protected from spreading this virus to other people – it’s a huge, bright day. It’s a way out of this pandemic.” CGH is following a tiered system to administer vaccines to its employees. The first tier includes “any health care provider that is working directly with COVID patients and is at a high risk of exposure to the virus,” CGH Chief Nursing Officer Kristie Geil explained. Those employees range from respiratory technicians to physicians to critical care nurses to environmental services workers, Geil said. Inoculations will continue through today and Saturday, and officials expect to administer six vaccines every 15 minutes, meaning about 130-150 doses will be administered per day. “The number of doses we’ve received and the broad set of employees that will be vaccinated by the end of the first round will help us maintain a healthy, vaccinated workforce,” Geil said. Employees who receive their first dose this week are already scheduled to receive their second dose, shipments of which are expected to arrive in the following weeks.

“Before I even stood up from the chair, I already had a card with a date and time for my next dose,” Reter said. CGH is not mandating that employees get the vaccine. Despite that, Geil said she hasn’t experienced any negative feedback from employees. “We are strongly encouraging [employees get the vaccine] and are using a lot of education and talking with staff about importance of it and their concerns,” Geil said. “We’re having a good response without mandating it.” Zigler, who has worked at CGH for more than 40 years, said she knew in the weeks leading up to the vaccine’s availability that she wanted to receive it. “I understand that some people are scared,” Zigler said. “But after working with COVID patients, and seeing how the virus affects them, I felt like if I could pave the way to show others that its OK [to get the vaccine], then I wanted to do that.” Zigler added that “everyone has to do what’s right for them,” but said she expects fellow healthcare workers who rose up to help care for COVID-19 patients will continue to do “everything we can do to protect

EP Panthers cross country member Jorden Robinson signed her letter of intent on Thursday, Dec. 10 to run for the Sauk Valley College Skyhawks. Robinson has been running long distance since 6th grade. She took her freshman year off to try another sport but returned to her love of running her sophomore year. Coach Elizabeth Green stated that “Jorden was a number one runner her sophomore and junior years. This year she rolled her ankle pretty bad but that did not keep her down. She continued to persevere and run as best she could. She was a deciding factor in the conference meet. Jorden was a great asset to the program by encouraging everyone and showing good teamwork. She will do well for the Skyhawks under Coach Nick Hartz.” Her first season as a sophomore found her increasing her skills at every meet. She was enjoying the freedom of running but also mindful that she could help her team obtain good scores at every meet if she could give it 100%. Robinson continued to do so and found herself and teammates running at Detweiler Park in Peoria. Many of the seasoned runners were all excited about going back to Peoria and she said she did not understand until she got there and found 64 teams running. Then she admits to

becoming nervous and Coach Green had to talk to her and help settle her nerves. The talk worked as Robinson got a personal best record time at that event. In talking about her senior year, Robinson stated that with the COVID and restrictions it placed on the runners it was quite a different season. She was sorry that the team could not go to state this year. The IHSA only sanctioned sectionals as the final stop for the season. In speaking about her ankle, Robinson said it was her senior year and she wasn’t going to sit it out on the sidelines. When she started to feel like it was hurting, she had teammates there to bolster her back up as they knew her goal of running the season. Hartz is a third-year cross country coach at Sauk Valley and the assistant track coach at Bureau Valley for the last seven years. Hartz has observed Robinson as a hard worker and easy to train and coach. She will be joining a team that consists of some former EP Panthers running for Sauk Valley. Robinson is looking forward to once again running with Olivia Miniel. Miniel is one year older but became good friends with Robinson, so she stated it will be fun running alongside her again. Attending the signing was Robinson’s mother Toshia Large, Coach Green, and Coach Hartz.

ComEd and Whiteside County are teaming to introduce ComEd’s Small Business Customer Assistance Program to area businesses. The County and ComEd understand that COVID-19 continues to create economic hardship for many of the region’s business customers, and to assist in this time of need, ComEd created a new program to help small businesses. As of December 16, 2020, ComED is accepting applications for assistance that would be applied to a business’ bill in 2021 if they meet all qualifications. On Saturday, Dec. 12, at approximately 1 a.m., Morrison Police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Joel Canas, 28 of Sterling, for moving and equipment violations. As a result of the stop, a passenger, Mark A. Chavez, 36 of Sterling, was arrested pursuant to an arrest warrant issued by Lee County, charging Chavez with failure to appear – criminal damage to property. Chavez was transported to the Whiteside County Jail, processed, posted bond and was released on a notice to appear. The driver, Joel Canas was issued a citation for no valid driver’s license and another passenger, Jason J. Witmer, 39 of Sterling, was issued citations for operating an uninsured vehicle and illegal use of special plates by a dealer. On Saturday, Dec. 12, at approximately 12:45 p.m., Morrison Police responded to a domestic dispute at the apartment complex at 631 East Lincolnway, Morrison. As a result of the investigation, police arrested and charged Nelson T. Grismore, 35 of Morrison, with domestic battery.

Grismore was transported to the Whiteside County Jail. Morrison Police were assisted by the Morrison Community Hospital Emergency Medical Services. On Wednesday, Dec. 16, at approximately 9 p.m., Morrison Police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Joseph D. Richards, 40 of Morrison, for a moving violation. The stop occurred in the 100 block of South Cherry Street, Morrison. As a result of the stop, Richards was arrested pursuant to an arrest warrant issued by Whiteside County charging Richards with battery. Morrison Police also arrested and charged Richards with driving while under the influence of alcohol. Richards was transported to the Whiteside County Jail, processed and released on a notice to appear.

Encephalopathy: altered mental status of the brain By STEPHEN D. HARRISON, M.D. Encephalopathy is a term that refers to an altered mental status of the brain function. Delirium is a term that is closely associated with the spread, the condition may arise from a number of different situations. Typically what is shared in common is problems with focusing our attention or thinking in general. Sometimes there may be associated headaches and occasionally even seizures in certain situations. Also hyper vigilance and personality changes are sometimes present. There may be also physical expressions that may look like stroke-like situations with trouble tracking and trouble performing fine motor tasks. People may sometimes have a tremor or altered gait. On occasions there may be involuntary grasping and sucking

motions. Of course these measures can be present with a stroke or other neurological event. In the most advanced stage altered breathing may occur. Sometimes confabulations or invented memories along with poor recall may predominate. Anything that affects the brain can produce encephalopathy. Perhaps the most common short term process could involve something as basic as sleep deprivation. It is also common for people that have been in the hospital with a variety of conditions. The most common perhaps is that of sepsis in which an infection may spread to multiple organs of the body including the brain. Alcoholism is another common cause of a special type of encephalopathy. Even hypertension in extreme situations can preclude encephalopathy.

CORDOVA - The communities where Exelon Generation employees live and work will receive more than $4.4 million to support critical needs, thanks to the nuclear power plant employees and the Exelon Foundation. The nuclear power plant employees pledged more than $2.9 million to over 2,000 different charities in their surrounding communities this year. And for every dollar employees pledged, the Exelon Foundation donated 50 cents to their local United Way, bringing the total donation to more than $4.4 million. At Quad Cities Generating Station, the nuclear power plant employees pledged more than $217,000 to 202 charities during this year’s Employee Giving Campaign. Organizations supported include YWCA of the Quad Cities, Tri-County Animal Protection League, River Bend Food Reservoir, Honor Flight of the Quad Cities, and Boys and Girls Clubs of the Mississippi Valley. “Having Exelon Generation as a strong community partner is important for Quad Cities area non-profits,” said Rene Gellerman, president and CEO of United Way Quad Cit-

ies. “2020 has been a turbulent and unpredictable year. The volunteerism and generosity of the employees at Quad Cities Station has made a big difference in helping people who are struggling – many whom have never needed help before. They then designed their own center and had preschoolers for two hours each during the two weeks before Christmas Vacation. Unity Christian Elementary students went to Resthave Nursing Home to sing Christmas carols. After leaving Resthave they visited Mrs. Zuidema in her home and sang. Mrs. Zuidema was a teacher at Unity for several years. The students included Jared Wessels, Ryan Medenblik, Brian Meinsma and Dustin Holesinger, children of parents that Mrs. Zuidema taught.

There are other types of encephalopathy associated with other infectious agents including Lyme disease and even salmonella, such as in food poisoning. HIV may include encephalopathy at times. Most recently, the COVID-19 or coronavirus has been associated with encephalopathy. There are no particular distinctions to make for these various types of encephalopathy. There is no particular type of universal treatment for encephalopathy. Of course, attention to the underlying condition as well as prevention is always first and foremost. Since the condition often involves something being inflamed, it is felt that calming down the inflammation may be helpful and avoiding further inflammation. Keep in mind that sugar and gluten may inflame the brain. In addition vitamin D may be a useful supplement to help maximize the immune response.
