Aftertwoyearsof“nodinner”becauseofCOVID-19,the FultonCommunityChristmas Dinnerteamfed alotofpeople.
Thedeliverycrewwasbusy delivering254mealstoshut-ins whowouldnothavereceiveda mealbecauseMobileMealsdoes notdeliveronChristmasDay andthemanyotherswho donot have acookwheretheyreside.It isourmissiontotryourbestto takecareofthosewhoarelonely andinneedof ahotmeal.Our missionwas accomplished becauseofallthecaringpeople whodecidedtospendtheirday attheFultonFireStationpreparing,serving,deliveringand cleaning.Wehadvolunteers fromFulton,Morrison,Clinton, Camanche,Albany,Savanna, Wheatland,Iowa,and afew othercitiesnearby.
SantaClausmadea visittothe dinnerandhandedouttoysto thechildrenthat werepresent.
Thedinnercouldnothave happenedwithoutthegenerosityofallthe“BakeryAngels,” SweetheartBakery/Homer’s Deli,EagleRiverLiquorandthe FultonFireDepartmentfor allowingus tousethebuilding andseveralotherindividuals whocontributedfinancially. WindmillRealEstateprovided aboutone-halfofall thedesserts
andtheAmishcommunityalso donated15homemadepies.ConstellationEnergy(formerly Exelon)wasagainourlargest overalldonor.Withthepricesof food,costswereupmorethan 30%fromthe2019dinner.We aregratefulforeveryonewho generouslycontributedtoour donationbucketaswell.
Therewere254mealsdeliv-
ered,60carryoutsandwefed135 peopleat thefirestation.
Blain’sFarmand Fleet donatedhalfofthecostof anew grill,whichwaswonbyKathy BorgmanofFulton.

Eveniftheweatherisn’tcold enoughthisweek,there’sstillplenty ofwinterleftforkidsandadultsto enjoythelatestadditiontoMorrison parks.MorrisonWinterParkopened fortheseasonTuesday,Dec.27,and whentemperaturesdipbelowfreezingagain,itwillbeopentothepublic from7a.m.to10p.m.daily.
Locatedinthetenniscourtat WaterworksPark,503W.Winfield St.,MorrisonWinterParkfeaturesa skatingrinkplatformmeasuring44 by88feet,honorsystemskaterentals,skatingtrainers,afirepit,picnic tables,musicovertheloudspeakers andstringsofpartylightsalongthe fences.Theparkalsohasnearby sleddinghills,withthewinterfun dependentonMotherNature.
Theparkisacommunityeffort ledbyMorrison’sDepartmentof FunandFriendsoftheParks,with anaimtoofferwinterrecreationto citizensandneighboringcommunities.Theinspirationfortherink camefromthecityofMt.Carroll, whichhasofferedacommunityrink forsometime,organizerTrentBush said.
“Afterconductingsitesurveysof possiblelocationsinMorrisonfor a rink,welandedonWaterworksPark asitofferednotonlyagreatlocation fortherink,butalsosleddingand otherpotentialactivities,”hesaidof thelocation.“Wemobilizedacoalitionofcommunitypartnerstoplan andraisecapital.Broad support fromthecommunityandamatching grantdonormadeithappenquickly.”
Thegroupsstarted workingon theprojectinNovemberafteracom-
munity meeting showed support for the winter park concept. Community workdays included removing a dead tree on the sledding hill, filling a washout bythe hill, cleaning and fixing up the courtand sponsorship andfundraisingefforts.
The cityofMorrison helped update the wiringaroundthe court and will pay for electricity. The MorrisonFireDepartment connected a fire hose to the park hydrant to fill the ice rinkand will resprayto smooththesurface as needed.Bush and his father, Lyle, built a platform to access the ice. Weets and Son Septic Service, Morrison,donated aportabletoiletforthewinterseason.
Volunteers essential to the park’s debut were Brad Yaklich, Chuck and Sally Finley, Lyle Bush, Joe Robbins, BrianMelton, Karla Burns, and Bill McNeil, along with community partners and the city. Snow Angel ($500+), Snow Day ($250-$499), and Snowflake ($100+) sponsors are listedonthepark’sFacebookpage.
Mayor Scott Vandermyde visited theparkduring openingday and recalled his experience at the park as a kid. He said the fire department usedtofill a rink for the winter and his dad taughthim how to skate there. They’d bring hockey sticks and pucks andspend hours at the park with others. He’s excited to see thetraditioncontinue.

Circulationconditionsaresomethingthatpeoplerefertowhenthey assumetheyhavediscomfortintheir extremitiesorfeelalittlepull.There aresomepotentiallysignificantconditionsofcirculationthatcanbelifeor limbthreatening.
Claudication isthenameofapain thatoccurs inthecalforthighwhen walking.Typicallythediscomfort, unlikesciatica,doesnotoccurwhen oneisatrest.Itoccurswithinablock ortwoofwalking.Whenonestops,the discomfortcomesback.Typically,it takesabout the same amountoftime ordistanceforthepaintocome.Furthermore,thetimethatthepaintakes togo awayisaconstantas well.The discomfortcomesbecausenotenough bloodisflowingintothevesselstothe muscles. Asthevesselorarterygets narrow,theneedsofthemusclecan-
notbemetwhileexercising,though theremaybeenoughflowwhileat rest.Thebasicprocessisatherosclerosisorbuildupoffattymaterial.Itisthe sametypeofprocessthatoccurs throughoutthebodyandmaybe responsibleforstrokeswithcirculationtothebrainandheartattacks withcirculation totheheart.Infact, onecouldthinkofclaudication,also referredtosometimesasperipheral vasculardisease,asanginaofthe extremities ortheperiphery.
Likeheartconditions,thesamerisk factorsmayapply–highbloodpressure,diabetes, highcholesterol levels, etc.Cigarettesmokingisfelttobeone oftheaggravatingfactorstotheconditionforpeoplewithatherosclerosis andothervesselsinthebody having increasedriskforthiscondition.
Thekeytomakingthediagnosisof thisconditionbeginswithhistory. Next,yourdoctormaydetectpulsesin
thevesselsoftheextremities,particularlyofthefeet.Atestmaybeordered tocheckthebloodflow.Thetestis calleddopplerstudies.Comparison maybemadebetweenthevesselsof thearmsandvesselsofthelegssimultaneously.Adropinthepressurein yourlegmaymeananarrowingofan artery.Iftheconditionissevere enoughtowarrantpossiblesurgery, yourdoctormayorderanangiogram ofthelegs,whichwillshowthesurgeonwheretheexactnarrowingisand howmuch.Sometimesangioplasty, justlikewiththeheart,isperformed.
Like mostconditions,thereare measuresthatcanbedonebeforesurgery.Theyincludeachangeinlifestyletoreducetheriskfactorsnoted. Thus,ifyousmoke,youmuststop.Itis alsoimportanttoloweryourcholesterolifitiselevated,andtocontrol yourbloodsugarifyouhavediabetes. Oneofthemostimportantmeasures
thatyoucandoistobeginanexercise program.Thisoftencanleadto improvementwithintwomonths.The eventualgoalis30to60minutesof exerciseaday.Unlikeheartdisease, onewouldgenerallyexercisetothe point ofpainandthenstopandrest untilthediscomfortisgoneandthen resumetheactivity, whichisfeltby experts tobesafe, butagainthegoalis gradualbuildup.
Finally,medicinesaresometimes employedtohelpwithsymptomsof thecondition.TrentalandPletalare twomedicinesemployedforimprovingcirculationsymptoms.Plavixis a medicinethatmayhavesomedirect benefits.Thesemedicinesaregenerallywelltolerated,though theydonot curethecondition.Atwo-tothreemonthtrialmaybenecessary.Xarelto isnowapprovedforthiswithevidence ofloweringsignificanteventsincludingheart attack.

Bynow,almosteveryoneinIllinois heardJan.1markedthebeginningofa significantchangeinthe state’s criminaljusticesystem–theelimination of cashbail.
It’sanissuethatdominated the2022 campaignsandhasbeenbothpraised and criticizedoneditorialpages innewspapersacross thestate.Itessentially meansthatstartingJan.1,thedecision as towhether acriminalsuspectshould beheldinjailwhileawaitingtrialis basedonpublicsafetyandthelikelihood thesuspectwillfleeratherthantheir financialabilitytopostbond.
Andwhilethatcriminaljustice reformhasreceivedwidespreadattention,itisbynomeanstheonlynewlaw thattookeffectwhenthecalendar turnedoverto2023.
Formostpeoplewhoworkaminimumwagejob,thenewyearbroughta payraiseto$13perhour,a$1increase overthecurrentwage.That’stheresult ofalawGov.JBPritzkersignedin 2019,hisfirst majorlegislativevictory afterbeingswornintoofficeamonth earlier.Thelaweventuallywillraise thewageto$15anhouronJan.1,2025.
Thenew$13hourlyratedoesnot applytoallminimumwageearners.Peoplewhoreceivetipsatworkwillsee theirbasewageriseto$7.80anhour. Andpeopleyoungerthan18whowork fewerthan650hoursperyearwillsee theirwagegoupto$10.50anhour.
Thehigherwageprobablywillcome aswelcomenewsforthosewhodrivea cartowandfromwork.That’sbecause thenewyearbroughthighermotor fueltaxes.
ThesameyearPritzkersignedthe minimumwagebill,healsosigned a multiyear,$45billiontransportation andcapitalimprovementsbillknown as“RebuildIllinois,”whichisfunded inpartwithhighermotorfueltaxes thatarescheduledtoincreasewith inflationeachyear.
Theadjustmentinthetaxrateis
supposed to take effecton July 1 of each year, the first day of the state’s fiscal year.Butlastspring, in thefaceof rising inflation and healthy state revenues, lawmakers authorized a sixmonth delay in the scheduled increase, puttingitoffuntilJan.1.
As a result, starting Jan. 1, the motor fuel tax people pay at the pump will go up 3.1 cents per gallon, and then it will increase again when the next regular adjustment date comes around onJuly1,2023.
