U.S. Army Corps of Engineers park rangerswill be stationed at thedamwith scopes andinformation on bald eagles. Thedam is a perfect fishingspotfor the raptors during winter. Erie man hospitalized after UTV rollover on Sunday

ERIE–AnEriemanisinthehospitalwith“potentiallylife-threateninginjuries”aftertheUTVhewas drivingrolledoverinruralErieSunday,theWhitesideCountySheriff said.

At1:42p.m.,WhitesideCounty deputiesweredispatchedtotheintersectionofGaulrappRoadandElston RoadinruralErieforasingle-vehiclecrashwithinjuries.

TylerNaftzger,25,ofErie,was drivingaUTVwestonGaulrapp Road whenhelostcontrolofthe UTVattheintersection,leftthe

roadwayandrolledover,Sheriff JohnBookersaidinanewsrelease Monday.

Naftzgersufferedpotentially life-threateninginjuriesandwas takentoGenesisMedicalCenter in Silvisandwaslaterairliftedto the UniversityofIowaHospitalsand Clinics,Bookersaid.

WhitesideCountydeputieswere assistedatthescenebytheErie PoliceDepartment,IllinoisState Police,IllinoisConservationPolice, ErieFireandEMSandTodd’sTowing.

Union calls for change of leadership at Thomson prison

Theunionrepresentingprison workersatthefederalhigh-security penitentiary at Thomsonhascalled fortheremovalofthewarden,assertingafailuretoaddresssexualmisconductbyinmatesagainstemployees.

TheAmericanFederationofGovernmentEmployeesmadetheappeal aboutthreeweeksafter U.S.Sen.Dick Durbin,chairmanoftheSenateJudiciaryCommittee,broughtupthe union’sreportsofincidentsatThomsonduringameetingwithColette Peters,directoroftheBureauofPrisons.

“Ourunionhasraisedrepeated concernsaboutthispersistentpattern ofabuse,butnothinghasbeendonein response,”saidEverett Kelley,the union’snationalpresident.“Employeesarebeingsubjectedtothiscriminalbehaviorrepeatedlyyetaregettingno supportfromtheiremployer inputtinganendtothiscycle.This failureofleadershipmustbe addressed.”

Accordingtotheunion,therewere 321incidentsofinmates engagingin sexualmisconductagainststafflast year.

AFGELocal4070PresidentJon Zumkehrsaidinanewsreleasethat leadershiphashadopportunitiesto addresstheincidentsbuthasn’t.

“Imagineworking up thecourage tospeakupabouttheseincidentsyet beingignoredbythoseincharge,” Zumkehrsaid.“Thelackofresponse frommanagementhasonlyemboldenedinmates,andweareveryfearful thenext attackwillbephysical.”

Thomsonprisonhouses667 inmatesinitshigh-securitysection, accordingtoinformationon the BureauofPrisonswebsite.Italso maintainsaminimumsecuritycamp that has131inmates.

DuringtheDec.14meetingwith Peters,Durbinsaidhewouldbe “watchingforchange”whenitcomes toseveralissues,includingreportsof staffandinmate misconduct.

The messenger RNA vaccine for COVID-19 is discussed

Themostcommonvaccineagainst COVID-19isthemessengerRNAvaccine.Weneedtoappreciatethatthese vaccineshavebeenindevelopment for morethan30yearsandwerenotarush jobbecauseoftheCOVID-19virus.The messengerRNAencodesaproteinfor anantigen,whichisdeliveredtothe hostmuscletissue. Thisstimulatesthe immuneresponse.Thisisfollowedby thehostrapidlydegradingthemessengerRNAinthevaccineandeliminating itfromthehost.Theimmuneresponse, however,remains effective.

Thereare severalattractivefeatures tothemessengerRNAvaccine.First, theyarenotreplicating. Secondly,and contrarytomisinformation,theydo notintegrateintothehostgenome, meaningtheydonotaffectsomeone’s genetics.Next,andmoreso thanthe influenzavaccine,theyarehighlyeffective.Theyalsoproduceantibodyand cellularimmunity.Anotherattractive featureisthey canbeproducedand modifiedquicklyonalargescalewith-

outhaving to growthe virus ineggs.

Thetwovaccinesthataremessenger RNAandapprovedintheU.S.are PfizerandModerna.Theothertwovaccines,which donotusemessengerRNA technologybuthave emergencyuse authorization,areJohnson&Johnson andNovavax.Allofthevaccineshave shownsignificanteffectiveness,but becauseofthedifferencesnoted,the PfizerandModernavaccineshave dominatedthemarket.Thesevaccines havebeenmorethan90%effectivein preventing hospitalizationsinadults 65 andolder.Duringtheendofthedelta variantwaveofthepandemicandthe emergence oftheomicronvariant,the unvaccinated werefivetimesaslikely tobeinfectedasvaccinatedpeople. Asignificantfactoroftheupdated vaccinationsthathadnotbeenestablishedwithothervaccinationsbefore thedevelopmentwastheCOVID-19 vaccinationimprovedtheimmune responseevenafteranaturalinfection of thevirus. Infact,whiletherewillbe

breakthroughsin those who arefully vaccinated,suchpeoplearefarless likelytobehospitalizedanddiecompared withthosewhoareunvaccinated.Furthermore,thosewhohave beenvaccinatedarebetterprotectedin termsofimmunitythanthosewith immunityacquiredfromnaturalinfection.

clottingdisorder,knownasthrombosis withthrombocytopeniasyndrome. Thisconditionlargelyoccurredin youngerwomenages18to49.Theincidenceoccurred insevencasesforevery millionvaccinedosesadministered Eventhenthebenefitsofthevaccine exceededtherisks.Thisphenomenon waslimitedtothe Johnson&Johnson vaccine.

Itisimportanttodispelsomeofthe mythsassociatedwiththeCOVID-19 vaccine.Thevaccinesdonotcontain tissuefromabortedfetuses,donot causesterilityin menorwomen, anddo notalteranyone’sDNA.The safetyand theeffectivenessofthevaccinehave beenestablishedforpregnantwomen aswell.Therealsoisno problemfor those whoare breast-feeding.

Thecaseforthechildren’svaccine hastaken sometimetounfold.Suffice tosay,theadvisorycommitteeforall immunizations supportstheconclusionofgivingthevaccinetochildren beginningasearlyassixmonths.The AmericanAcademyofPediatricians supports thisrecommendationaswell.
