The Naperville-based utilityis the largestnaturalgasdistributioncompanyinIllinois,servingmorethantwomillion customersand encompassingmostof suburbanChicago.

Despiteitsmostrecenthike,Nicor

saidtheforecastthatservedasthebasis forthoseratesdidn’ttakeintoaccount currentinflationratesorcostsforinfrastructureimprovementstobemadein 2023and2024.

Union calls for change of leadership at Thomson prison

Theunionrepresentingprison workersatthefederalhigh-security penitentiary at Thomsonhascalled fortheremovalofthewarden,assertingafailuretoaddresssexualmisconductbyinmatesagainstemployees.

TheAmericanFederationofGovernmentEmployeesmadetheappeal aboutthreeweeksafter U.S.Sen.Dick Durbin,chairmanoftheSenateJudiciaryCommittee,broughtupthe union’sreportsofincidentsatThomsonduringameetingwithColette Peters,directoroftheBureauofPrisons.

The messenger RNA vaccine for COVID-19 is discussed

Themostcommonvaccineagainst COVID-19isthemessengerRNAvaccine.Weneedtoappreciatethatthese vaccineshavebeenindevelopment for morethan30yearsandwerenotarush jobbecauseoftheCOVID-19virus.The messengerRNAencodesaproteinfor anantigen,whichisdeliveredtothe hostmuscletissue. Thisstimulatesthe immuneresponse.Thisisfollowedby thehostrapidlydegradingthemessengerRNAinthevaccineandeliminating itfromthehost.Theimmuneresponse, however,remains effective.

Thereare severalattractivefeatures tothemessengerRNAvaccine.First, theyarenotreplicating. Secondly,and contrarytomisinformation,theydo notintegrateintothehostgenome, meaningtheydonotaffectsomeone’s genetics.Next,andmoreso thanthe influenzavaccine,theyarehighlyeffective.Theyalsoproduceantibodyand cellularimmunity.Anotherattractive featureisthey canbeproducedand modifiedquicklyonalargescalewith-

outhaving to growthe virus ineggs.

Thetwovaccinesthataremessenger RNAandapprovedintheU.S.are PfizerandModerna.Theothertwovaccines,which donotusemessengerRNA technologybuthave emergencyuse authorization,areJohnson&Johnson andNovavax.Allofthevaccineshave shownsignificanteffectiveness,but becauseofthedifferencesnoted,the PfizerandModernavaccineshave dominatedthemarket.Thesevaccines havebeenmorethan90%effectivein preventing hospitalizationsinadults 65 andolder.Duringtheendofthedelta variantwaveofthepandemicandthe emergence oftheomicronvariant,the unvaccinated werefivetimesaslikely tobeinfectedasvaccinatedpeople. Theyalsowenttothehospitaland intensivecare anddiedatahigherrate.

Asignificantfactoroftheupdated vaccinationsthathadnotbeenestablishedwithothervaccinationsbefore thedevelopmentwastheCOVID-19 vaccinationimprovedtheimmune responseevenafteranaturalinfection of thevirus. Infact,whiletherewillbe

breakthroughsin those who arefully vaccinated,suchpeoplearefarless likelytobehospitalizedanddiecompared withthosewhoareunvaccinated.Furthermore,thosewhohave beenvaccinatedarebetterprotectedin termsofimmunitythanthosewith immunityacquiredfromnaturalinfection.

That’s nottosaythereare notsignificantpotentialsideeffects.Themost notablehasbeenthecardiacorheart issue, knownasmyocarditisandpericarditisinyoungmalesages12to18. Thisoccursmostcommonlyafterthe seconddoseofthevaccine.Eventhen, thisseriouscardiacproblemoccurred moreinyoungmenwhowereinfected withtheviruswhohadnothadthevaccination.Thisconditionhasbeen closelymonitoredwiththerecommendationtherebeatleasteightweeks betweenvaccination for malesages12 to39.Nonetheless,theresultscontinue toshowthatthosewhohavebeenvaccinatedhavelesshospitalizationand deathand thebenefits exceedtherisks.

Anotherconditionofconcernis a

clottingdisorder,knownasthrombosis withthrombocytopeniasyndrome. Thisconditionlargelyoccurredin youngerwomenages18to49.Theincidenceoccurred insevencasesforevery millionvaccinedosesadministered Eventhenthebenefitsofthevaccine exceededtherisks.Thisphenomenon waslimitedtothe Johnson&Johnson vaccine.

Itisimportanttodispelsomeofthe mythsassociatedwiththeCOVID-19 vaccine.Thevaccinesdonotcontain tissuefromabortedfetuses,donot causesterilityin menorwomen, anddo notalteranyone’sDNA.The safetyand theeffectivenessofthevaccinehave beenestablishedforpregnantwomen aswell.Therealsoisno problemfor those whoare breast-feeding.

Thecaseforthechildren’svaccine hastaken sometimetounfold.Suffice tosay,theadvisorycommitteeforall immunizations supportstheconclusionofgivingthevaccinetochildren beginningasearlyassixmonths.The AmericanAcademyofPediatricians supports thisrecommendationaswell.
