“Thiscouldnothavehappenedwithoutallofoursponsors,ourvolunteersand,of course,ourcommunity,”said PoliceChiefNickNeblung, whothankedall who supportedandattendedtheevent.
NationwideNNOeventsare heldonthefirstTuesdayin Augusttobringpoliceand neighborstogetherfor anight offunand positiveinteraction.
Thedepartment enteredthe awardprocessbysubmittinga packetwithinformationon howtheeventbenefitedthe community,attendancenumbers,lettersofsupportfrom communityleaders,andtheir top sixevent photos.Theyalso couldincludea flashdrive withadditionalphotosand videos.Thesubmissionwas duebySept.21,withNational NightOutorganizersreviewingandjudginginthefall.
Lastweek,thedepartment received asilverNational NightOutCupinthemailfor theirfirst-placewin.“Itwasa bigger trophythanwethought itwouldbe,”Sgt.Adam Wherrysaid withasmile.
FultonhelditsfirstNational NightOutin2021andthen
againin 2022,whenitdoubled insizeand attendance.Last year’seventfeaturedemergencyvehicles,MedForce AeromedicalTransport,Pink HealsoftheSaukValley, McGrufftheCrimeDog,a dunktank, aKT3fitnesschallenge,livemusicby 3Onthe
Tree,bouncehouses, aJawsof Lifedemonstrationby theFultonFireDepartment,foodand businessvendorsandmuch more.Theeventwasmade possiblebycommunitymonetarydonations,products,raffleprizesand food.
NationalNight Outwill be marking40yearsin2023and Fulton’sofficersarealready planningtheirnextevent, thoughitwillbe abitdifferent. Thedepartmentwillcoordinate withFultonFunCrew for a“TotallyTuesday”eventon Aug.1, theofficialNational NightOutdate,forafreecommunitycookout andlivemusic by 3OntheTree.
Thebiggerevent,however, willbeonSaturday,Aug.5,at DrivesPark.Byholdingitona weekend,thedepartment hopes to havealongerevent wherekidscanstaylatersince it’snoton aschoolnight.“We wanttokeepmakingitbigger andbetter,”Wherrysaid.
“Withitsexponent ial growth,we’rereachingforthe stars,”Sgt.DwayneHamilton said oftheirgoalsforthe event.

ThirteenFultonHighSchoolstudents joinedtheranksofthelargest,oldestand mostprestigiousstudentrecognitionprogram –theNationalHonorSociety-atan inductionceremonyheldatthehighschool cafeteriaMonday,Jan.30.
Studentsmust submitan application andanessaytojoinNHS,withfaculty selectingthenewinducteesbasedonthe four pillarsof Scholarship,Leadership, CharacterandService.
Attheinduction,currentofficers LandonMeyers,president;ArianaNielsen,vicepresident; BraydenDykstra,secretary;andKamrynSikkema,treasurer, led theLightingofthe Candlesbasedon thefourpillars,thenrecitedtheNHS Pledge.

Community fights for high school senior with cancer

SteamerNationshowedupinforceto“FightforFrick” onThursday,Feb.2,tohelpaFultonfamilyintheirtimeof need.FultonHighSchoolseniorOliverFrickisbattlingan aggressiveformofbonecancerknownasosteosarcoma, andthecommunityisensuringthatheandhisfamilyare notfightingalone.
The“FightforFrick”fundraiserdrewhundredstothe schoolduringbasketballgamesand SeniorNightatthe schoollastweek.Thefundraiserfeatured56rafflebaskets, 12silentauctionitemsand26giftcardsintheBlindDraw, withthoseticketssellingoutminutesaftertheevent started.
Localbusinesses,craftersandorganizationsalldonated items,withproceedstohelpsupportOliverandhisfamily duringhisongoingtreatmentattheUniversityofIowa SteadFamilyChildren’sHospitalinIowaCity.Therewasa walkingtacobarinthecafeteria,aKeyClubbakesale,yellowandblackshirts,buttons,braceletsandstickersales, andamessageboxtoleavewell-wishesforOliver.
“It’ssoheartwarmingandunbelievablewhatpeoplewill do,”saidFHSLearningRecoveryandCurriculumCoordinatorKathleenSchipper,whohelpedcoordinatetheevent. Oliver’sdadTimisthebakeratthehighschool,andheand hiswifeRachelhavesixchildren:Megan,Lauren,Wells, Oliver,LeoandLilly.
OliverwaspartoftheSeniorNightrecognitionasaband member.HealsowasinductedintotheNationalHonor Societylastweek.Afterundergoingchemotherapytreatmentsforthepastfewmonths,hisnextchallengewillbe surgeryinFebruary.
SchippercreditedstudentsGraceDykstra,Annaka Hackett,PaigeLowerandAriNielsenfororganizingand planningthefundraiser.
“Thesegirlsshowedoutstandingleadershipskillsand empathytowardstheFrickFamilyastheythoughtthrough howtomoveforwardwiththebenefit,”shesaid.“Itwasa tremendoushonortoworkwiththesestudentsandhelpthe family.IamveryproudoftheKeyClubandthiscommunity.Theturnoutwasoutstanding!”
“ItwasaprouddaytobeaSteamerassomanyinour communitycameouttosupportoneofourfellowSteamers andhisfamily,”SuperintendentDarrylHoguesaid.
Otheropportunitiestosupportthefamilywillcontinue asOliverfacestheroad torecovery. Krumpets isdoing a round-upcampaignforOliverinFebruary,wherecustomerscanrounduptheirpurchasetothenearestdollar.The BrunchHousedonated30%ofsales onFeb.4totheFrick family,andtheschooldistrictsoldmorethan600“Fightfor Frick”T-shirtsoverthepastcoupleofmonths.
Chadwick-MilledgevilleSchoolDistrict ishavingaFultonSpiritDayandHatDayonFriday,Feb.10,withstudentsencouragedtowearredandblackandpay$1towear ahat.Allproceedsfroma50/50raffleonFeb.13-14willgo totheFrickfamily.

IllinoisandIowaTugCommittees areatanimpasseafterIowa demandedtheteamsswitchsidesthis year,withIllinoispullingtheropein Iowaandviceversa.Iowaclaimsthat thevastlydifferentcurrentsgiveIllinoisanunfairadvantage,makingit impossibletohavea “fairandeven competition.”
Theonlytug-of-waracrossthe riverthatbeganin1987features10 men’steamsof20tuggersandone women’steamof25tuggerspulling a 2,700-footlong,720-poundropeacross theMississippi.Rivertrafficishalted forthreehours forthecompetition, thankstoaspecialpermitbytheU.S. ArmyCorpsofEngineers.

KnappsaidIowa’sultimatumwas rejectedfornumerousreasons–as a communityfestivalandcompetition, spectatorswouldn’twanttocheeron theIowatuggers,andthepopular kids’tugisheldanhourpriortothe mainevent.There’salsothelogistics oftravelingtoLeClaireduringthe busiestweekendoftheyear,andtug teamsmissingoutoneventsifthey hadtobeinIowa.Sheargued that Iowa’stugpitcouldbeimpacting theirtuggersaftervariouschanges overtheyears,suchasthegeneral locationandmaterials.

Heartratevariabilityisoneofthe mostimportantnumbersthathas beenwrittenaboutonthebigfour numbers. Thisconceptisnotabout howfastyourheartbeatsatone time ofthedayandhowslowatanother. Ratheritreflectsthebeat-to-beatelectricalactivity.Whereas,intuitively, youmightthinkthatkeepingthat numberconstant is agoodthing,it actuallyisnot.Naturedesignsacompetitionbetweenthesympatheticnervoussystemandtheparasympathetic nervoussystem,whichsimultaneouslyinfluencetheheartbeat.
Abalancednervoussystemisbeing toldconstantlybytheparasympatheticordeactivatingsystemtobeat slower.Thisistherestanddigestcomponent.Meanwhile,thesympathetic nervoussystem,whichisthefightor flightresponse,istellingtheheart ratetobeatfaster.Thisproducesthe fluctuationwhen thetwocompete.
Havingahighrateofheartratevariabilityisadesirablemeasurebecause itshowsahealthybalancebetween thetwosystems.
TherearemanyfactorsthatinfluenceHRV.Avoidingprocessedfoods andsugarsinyourdietisoneofthem
Thepresenceofthesechemicals increasesthesympathetictoneproducingcortisolandotherstresshormones.Stressisanobviousinfluence onthenegativeside.Alcoholalsocan influencetheheartratevariabilityin anegativefashion.Geneticsandphysicalactivityalso contribute. Onone hand,strenuousactivitymaylower theheartratevariabilitybecausethe sympatheticsystemtendstodominate. However, itmaybeassociated withanoverallbetteraverage.Unfamiliarconditionsalsotendtolower theheartratevariability.
Whentheheartratevariabilityon averageisreduced,itisusually becauseofonedominatingbranch,the sympathetic.Thisisbecausecortisol
andotherstresshormonesareonconstantalert.Intheabsenceofphysical activity, yourbodymayworkhardto reducethestressbecauseoffatigue, dehydration,illness,etc.Training programscanbeoptimizedbyusing anappormonitorthathelpstotrack this.
Heartratevariabilityisanindividualizedmeasure.Youngerpeopletend tohaveahigherheartrate forvariabilitiesthan theelderly,andmales areslightlyhigherthanfemales.Elite athletesusuallyhavemoreheartrate variabilitywiththeirendurance.
HRVcan be improvedthrough intelligenttrainingandstaying hydrated.Quality sleepismore importantthanthetotalnumberof hoursofsleep,alongwithconsistency inthetimingofsleep.Theregulation ofothermeasuresofdailyactivities helpstoalignthecircadianrhythmof naturewiththeheartratevariability. PlayingwithoutleadingscorerBaylenDamhoffandseniorBradenDykstra,theSteamers played...well,likethey havethepastmonth plus.A61-41winover Eastland markedFulton’s15thvictoryinarowandimprovedthe Steamersto20-6overallandaperfect7-0inthe NUICSouth.

TheRamscrownedfiveindividual champsandaddedfourrunners-up, takinga50-point leadintothefinal roundandfinishingwith219pointsto easilytoprunner-upOrion(166).
“Ourconfidenceishighrightnow, andit’sbeenhighallyear,”saidjunior TharrenJacobs,whowonthetitleat 113pounds.“Wefeelprettygoodabout it.We’rehappy,andwewanttogoto teamstate.”
