FACE upcoming grant application opens April 14
Fulton’s community foundation, the Fulton Association for Community Enrichment (FACE), has streamlined its grant application process to allow organizations to submit applications annually to be considered for grants from any of several funds.
The upcoming grant application cycle opens April 14 and closes May 31 and distributes grant dollars from four funds: the D.S. Flikkema Foundation, the FACE Community Impact Endowment, Harbor Crest Legacy Endowment and the Fulton Gardens Fund.
There are two separate applications that may be submitted, one for the Fulton Gardens Fund and another for the other endowments.
In addition to making the application process easier, it also allows applicants to apply for larger-sized grants than otherwise since grant dollars could come out
of multiple funds. For the 2024 grant cycle, the maximum grant amount that can be requested is $5,000.
Nonprofit organizations serving Fulton are encouraged to apply for a grant. Previous grants have been awarded to help fund community programs, technology upgrades, community beautification, safety equipment and so much more for the Fulton community. Applicants should keep in mind that FACE grants are not generally awarded for maintenance of buildings, salaries or building projects.
FACE is an affiliate of the Quad Cities Community Foundation and uses its online grants application system that allows applicants to complete, save and submit their grant application in one place and have ongoing access to it. Nonprofits must first create an organizational profile and login information

The fascia and chronic pain syndrome is discussed
By STEPHEN D. HARRISON, M.D.
To open up our imagery of the fascia, think of Spider-Man. If there is anything to the energy and abilities of Spider-Man, it assuredly comes from his having harnessed the power of the fascia giving him incredible flexibility and elasticity. By the same token, he loses energy and power when it is tethered down and bound up. The same is true for you and me. The fascia is a connective tissue that covers the body from head to toe in a very connected fashion. It is involved in virtually every chronic pain syndrome when it is not mobile and elastic.
It’s not only connected head to toe, but it connects with its neighbors in terms of bundles.
The brain bundle represents stored power for a future reference. Often when something resembles a similar impulse that caused pain, the same pain will happen once again when the signal is fired by anything that looks like the original provoking element. This recruitment of the neighbor in a negative fashion is known as smudging. It is helpful to identify smudging pain in order to retrain the brain literally one step at a time. In order to get out of chronic pain, it is important
for the brain to learn that a given area of the body is not in immediate danger, unlike the signal that the brain bundle seems to be giving. The book “Taming Pain” by Cheryl Wardlaw is full of insights on how to do exactly that.
In the system of chronic pain, inflammation is brought about by stress and poor nutrition, which contributes heavily to the ongoing cycle of pain. Deep breathing becomes a very important element as underscored by Diana Hansen in her book on “Fascia Decompression” subtitled The Missing Link in Self Care.
Heat that is generated by the muscle known as the diaphragm with breathing helps to warm the fluids in the core that allow for better movement of the fascia and other tissues. This helps to free up the fascia with up to 2,000 pounds per square inch force. Now the Spider-Man analogy does not seem so far-fetched. A gentle method using much softer material is found in the book “The Melt Method” by Sue Hitzman. Another softer device and method is by Jill Miller using the Coregeous ball.
Even the thoughts we choose help with our healing as demonstrated scientifically that the frequency of love is the same as the frequency of healthy DNA.
We might add that letting go of stress or past inflicted harm can be helpful with healing. Some have said affliction, whether outside or self-induced, becomes inflammation. All of the measures to release fascia are done in order to relieve trapped waste, which leads to adhesions or areas that are stuck down. These adhesions need to be melted away.
Hansen points to several key areas on the body that must be freed up. From the head down, the tongue is the only muscle in the body with one connection. It is important to place the free end in the docking station, which is at the ridge of the roof of the mouth behind the teeth. The next area is the rib cage, which supports the neck and everything above.
The rectal area and the feet are the final two areas to focus on. Block therapy, which Hansen teaches, can help to free up tethered and bound up fascia that affects other major areas downstream, including frozen shoulder. When the rib cage is not functioning properly, this impacts the organs of heart and lungs.
This rib fascia carries over into the abdominal cavity on the stomach, pancreas, liver and gallbladder. This has many downstream implications. In addition to poor function, these increase dis-
placement of organs and has people appearing heavier than they need to be. In fact, Hansen argues fat is more about displaced fascia than it is about fat itself. Final areas to focus on include tightening of the muscles of the rectum and perineum and finally those of the feet that contribute to plantar fasciitis. Block therapy can help in all of these areas.
Exercises and techniques also are detailed in the book by Wardlaw. She demonstrates how fascia planes and chains interact to allow for smooth flow or are bound up and contribute to chronic pain. She shows how the fascia system works hand in hand with the endocrine system, organ mobility and tailbone mobility, along with the lymphatic system. She further notes tracking down and resolving pain is looking at the many factors one by one in a detective-like fashion involving nerve root pain and trigger point muscle pain along with all of the above. Good posture puts all of this together and avoids overload, overstretch and deterioration.
Todd Dierks, an astute practitioner, does neuromuscular treatment that helps to free up the fascia by trying to uncover the site of an original injury and the downstream implications.

The Fulton State Bank has made a donation of $3,000 to the Harbor Crest Home. The gift was approved at a special meeting of the board of directors of the bank. President Henry Kiefer said, “This contribution is made in line with the bank’s policy of assuming its responsibilities for community development to the greatest possible extent.”
After many weeks of careful planning and preliminary work, the financial campaign for Harbor Crest Home will get underway next week with more than 140 workers in the field. All captains and other workers are urged to attend a kickoff meeting when final instructions will be given. Mark Morris, owner of the Lafayette Hotel and chairman of the board of the Martin Morris Company in Clinton, gave the Harbor Crest Home campaign a big boost this week by sending checks totaling $300.

The meeting has been requested by the U.S. Corps of Engineers to explain some recent changes in flood control plans and everyone interested may have an opportunity to express opinions.

A change in Fourth Street traffic from one-way south to one-way north will be recommended at the next meeting of the Fulton City Council. The recommendation for a one-year trial of the new arrangement will be proposed by the Planning and Records Committee. After discussion in which Mayor Maliszewski was the principal advocate of the change, Aldermen Ray Meurs and Warren Juist said they favored making the recommendation. Committee Chairman Jerry Van

Voices of Praise spring cantata planned in Morrison 9
MORRISON – The Emmanuel Church-Morrison’s Voices of Praise will present its 15th annual spring cantata “Back to the Garden” at 7 p.m. Friday, April 19, 3 p.m. Saturday, April 20, and 7 p.m. Sunday, April 21
Voices of Praise’s platform will be filled with 75 singers who will energetically present music arranged by Geron Davis and Dusty Wilson. Soloists joining the choir in the concerts will be Melissa Sterenberg, Jason McDearmon, Ed Pruis and Kathy Green.
“When I heard this brand-new cantata, I knew this was what we needed to sing at this time and in this place,” Voices of Praise director Rich Criss said. “This cantata is so relevant to what is happening in this world and gives us such hope through the powerful reminder that God loves each of us so much. Even as the choir has rehearsed, we have literally been moved to tears in each rehearsal because of the power behind this work. This is honestly like no other cantata I have ever directed in 30 years of doing so. I can promise you that your heart will be moved.”
No tickets are needed for the 70-minute concert. A freewill offering will be received. All ages are welcome. The church is handicapped accessible.
A fellowship hour, hosted by the women of Emmanuel, will follow all performances.
A free shuttle bus will be provided
for one hour before and after all three services. The bus will pick up from Ebenezer Reformed Church’s parking lot two blocks south of Emmanuel’s
campus and drop off riders at the curb in front of Emmanuel, 202 E. Morris St. For information, call the church office at 815-772-3890.

Explore natural wonders of northwest Illinois state parks
By AIMEE BARROWS abarrows@shawmedia.com
It’s time to shake off the winter layers and embrace the great outdoors. When you’re planning your next adventure, look to the treasure trove of state parks in northwest Illinois.
Each park offers unique landscapes, outdoor activities and historical intrigue. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or a more casual nature enthusiast, there’s a park waiting to be discovered. Pack your hiking boots, grab your camera and get ready to explore the hidden gems of northwest Illinois.
Mississippi Palisades State Park
The park awaits a few miles north of Savanna in Carroll County, along the mighty Mississippi River. You’ll find intriguing rock formations, caves and gorgeous cliffs and bluffs. In fact, the U.S. Interior Department deemed the unique formations a national landmark in 1973. The park has a rugged 15-mile trail system for hiking, including less strenuous trails in the northern system and more advanced trails, closer to the bluffs, in the south system. Camping is sought-after, with 110 electrical hookup sites and showers and flush toilets available from May 1 through Oct. 31. Rock climbing is allowed in specific areas of the park, but climbers must bring their own equipment. Six picnic shelters are available, as are fishing and boating on the river.
White Pines Forest State Park
White Pines Forest State Park, located in Mt. Morris in the Rock River valley, is the perfect place for a family getaway. The 385-acre park has more than 100 campsites, in addition to White Pines Lodge. The lodge, originally constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, has modern amenities, including 16 cabins of varying sizes. The White Pines Lodge restaurant offers banquet facilities and a dinner theater. Enjoy a
hike along seven marked trails that wind along vine-covered limestone bluffs, towering pine trees or fields of blossoming flowers, and top it off with a picnic meal in one of several shaded areas with water, fireplaces, tables and playgrounds. Four of the picnic areas have shelters.
Apple River Canyon State Park
In the hilly northwest Jo Daviess County near the Wisconsin border, guests will find limestone bluffs, deep ravines, streams, cliffs high above the Apple River and scenic canyons at the 1,907-acre state park. Hikers can choose from five trails that wind through the woods for several miles. There are 49 campsites, but no showers. Fishing is available on the Apple River. Set along the banks of the river are four picnic areas with grills, accessible drinking water and toilets.
Castle Rock State Park
Castle Rock State Park is nestled along the Rock River, three miles south of Oregon. The park features
rugged rock formations, ravines and a sandstone bluff next to the waterway. Fishing is popular here, as the park has more than a mile of fishing along the riverbank, and a boat ramp is available. The park does not have campsites, but sports six miles of marked hiking trails and three picnic areas.
Morrison Rockwood State Park
The beautiful Lake Carlton is the centerpiece of this picturesque state park, located just north of Morrison in Whiteside County. The 1,164-acre park has a concrete boat ramp for fishing on the lake, as well as a 3.5-mile hiking trail. Equestrians have use of a 14-mile trail through the park. Spend the night at one of 92 campsites, all with electricity, available in the wooded areas of the park. A shower building with toilets is open May 1 through Oct. 31. Enjoy a meal at the Lakeview picnic area overlooking the lake, offering a pavilion with a fireplace and available electricity.
Lowden State Park
Lowden State Park in Oregon is home to the majestic 50-foot statue of Chief Black Hawk, placed high on a bluff overlooking the Rock River. The statue is a tribute to Native Americans and was designed by sculptor Lorado Taft. The statue is still undergoing restoration work, but there is plenty to do at this beautiful park. The scenic Rock River flows through the park and is available for fishing and boating. Four miles of hiking trails wind through the park, with picnic areas complete with tables, drinking water and outdoor toilets. Lowden is a great spot for campers as there are 80 sites with electricity, a shower building and sanitary dumping station for trailers, as well as a campground cabin with beds and electricity. If you feel like roughing it, primitive, hike-in-only campsites also are available.
Franklin Creek State Natural Area
Just east of Dixon in Lee County is Franklin Creek State Natural Area, an 882-acre park featuring large natural springs, hardwood forests and a mill spring, which provided water power for the largest grist mill in the county. The area is home to the Franklin Creek Grist Mill, an original cornmeal and wheat flour producing mill, which was constructed in 1847. The reconstructed mill is open to the public on weekends from April through November. It serves as a visitors center and offers milling demonstrations. Franklin Creek is popular with equestrians, with 12 miles of trails and facilities that include a picnic shelter, bathrooms, drinking water and an outdoor show area. Hike along the area’s 4.5 miles of marked trails before stopping for a snack at one of five shelters, complete with electricity, tables, grills, drinking water and restrooms.
For directions or more information about all the state parks, visit dnr.illinois.gov/parks.html.
