Theupcominggrantapplication cycleopensApril13andclosesMay31 anddistributesgrantdollarsfrom fourfunds:D.S.FlikkemaFoundation,FACECommunityImpact Endowment,Harbor CrestLegacy EndowmentandFultonGardens Fund.Therearetwoseparateapplicationsthatmaybesubmitted,onefor theFultonGardensFundandanother fortheotherendowments.Inaddition tomakingtheapplicationprocesseasier,italsoallowsapplicants toapply forlarger-sizedgrants since grantdollarscouldcomeoutofmultiplefunds. Forthe2023grantcycle,themaximumgrantamountthatcanbe requestedis$5,000.
Nonprofitorganizationsserving Fultonareencouragedtoapplyfora grant.Previousgrantshavebeen awardedtohelp fundcommunity programs,technologyupgrades,communitybeautification,safety equipment andsomuchmorefortheFultoncommunity.Applicantsshouldkeepin

AlsoattheirmeetingWednesday,March15,the committeediscussedupcomingworkatHeritage Canyon:thelogcabinandhousewillbepainted thisyearandthekioskisbeingcleanedupand painted,with anewdoorinstalled.Thechurchstill needssomework,especiallyonthe floor,andthe committeeisindiscussionaboutinstalling anew roof.Theyalsoreportedthatthegazeboneedsto comedownsinceit’sfallingapart.ForCattail Park,thecommitteeislookingatraisingthe depositandrentalfeesandaddingmorepark equipmentsinceitgetsused alot.

Thenewsign,visiblefromtheroadwayonI-88eastboundandacouple milespasttheIL-78exit, reads:Tim KellerMemorial,LyndonPrairie, WhitesideCo.SWCDandNaturalArea Guardians.It’safittingtributetoaman whodedicatedhislifetoconservation andpreservationandwas known locallyasthe“GodfatherofthePrairie.”
Kellerpassedawayatage80onSept 30,2022,atRockRiverHospiceand HomeinSterling.Heworkedasasoil scientistfortheUSDAbeforeareturn tohisfarmingroots:plantingblackwalnutandappletrees,craftingcustom cideratYeOldeCiderMillandraising dairyandbeefcattlein Sterling.Hewas aboardmemberofWhitesideCounty Soil&WaterConservationDistrictand co-founderofWhitesideCountyNaturalAreaGuardians(NAGs)andthe PrairiePreservationSociety ofOgle County.
TheLyndon-AgnewPrairieconsists of39.9acresalongsidetheinterstate andisoneofafeworiginalprairieremnantsinWhitesideCounty.It’sawet mesicprairieanddrymesicprairieof theMississippiRiversectionofthe UpperMississippiRiverandIllinois RiverBottomlandsNaturalDivision.It wasoriginallydedicatedinMay1995 andis ownedbytheNaturalLandInstitute.
AtThursday’sgathering,Randy Nyboer,chairpersonofNAGS,offered somebackgroundontheacreageof blacksoilprairieland. “For8,000years theprairiewashere.Then130yearsago therailroadcame,usingthelandtoconnectSterlingtoLyndon.Then100years latertherailroadclosedtheline.Then TimKellercamealong,” hesaid,smiling.“Heknewalltherightpeople,knew the remnants,and wantedthemto remainpreserved.Hewasverypersistent.”
Theoriginal100-footwiderailroad wasconstructedbetweenLyndonand Agnewin1869 bytheBurlington-NorthernRailroad.Intheearly1970s,Keller beganhisventureofpreservingthe prairiefromencroachment byfarming OnJune16,1979, anofficialleasewas grantedtohimbytherailroadcompany atanoriginalrentalrateof$180per year.His preservationeffortscontinued withgrowingsupport,andthe remnant waseventuallyaddedtothelist ofIllinoisNaturePreserves.
AtthededicationwereTim’swife, CarolynKeller,daughters,KirstenJorgensenofGeneseoandLauraKarazija ofJohnston,Iowa,andtwogranddaughtersAddieJorgensen andMadelynWhitehead.Carolynthankedthe groupfortheirefforts,sayingshe’smet wonderfulpeoplethroughTim’swork

Anyoneinterestedinstreet scrubbingactivitiesisencouragedtogetinvolved.Both

SchmalingMemorialPublicLibrary beganusingitsnewautomatedcheckoutsystemApril1.Whennewlyhired libraryDirectorBritniHartmanmet withSupportersofSchmalingin August 2011,herfirstrequest ofthe groupwastohelpfundanautomation systematthelibrary.BytheFebruary 2012S.O.S.quarterly meeting,thevolunteergrouphadbegunfundraising forthenewtechnologyprogramwith theboard’sapproval.
Manypeoplearefamiliarwiththe term“angioplasty,”referringtothe openingofcoronaryarteriesbyballoon procedure.Coronaryrelatestothe heart.Whendiseaseoccursin thecoronaryarteries,it may betreatedin a varietyofwaysdependingontheseverity,otherconditionsandriskfactors a personmayhave.Medicinesmayhelp toreduce somerisk factorsforheart disease.Dietandlifestyle,ofcourse,are mainstays.
Mostalsoarefamiliarwithacoronarybypassinwhichthediseased arteriesarebypassedbysegments takenfromanotherportionof thebody tohelpwithflow.
Angioplasty,oraballoonprocedure, isanothermethodemployedforsome peoplewithheartdisease.Angioplasty cannotbeperformedoneveryone.Cer-
taincriteriamustbemet,including havingdiseasedvesselsthatcanbe reachedsafelybytheballoon.Furthermore,thevesselsshouldbethetypein naturethatarenormally improvedby theprocedure.Thecardiologistoften reviewsfilmsbasedonanangiogram to helpdeterminewhetherthisispossible.
Theangiogramsharesmanyfeatureswiththeangioplasty.Itisaprocedureinwhichdyeisemployedsothat thepicturesmaybetakenlikeafilm ratherthanaballooninserted.
Withangioplasty,atinyballoonis insertedintoablockedvesselthat suppliestheheartwithblood.Theballoon istheninflated tounclogthevessel.The balloonisattachedtoalongflexible tube calledacatheter.Underlocalanesthesia,theballooncatheterisintroducedintothearterysystem,often throughthevesselsinthegroinorwrist area.Thephysicianthensteersthe
cathetertotargetbloodvessels intothe heartwhilewatchingthecatheter advanceonascreen.Whentheblockage orobstructionis reached,theballoonisinflatedandpulled back.The balloonisthendeflatedandremoved withthecatheterinhopesthatthe blockagehasatleastbeenpartially opened.Thisprocedurehashelped manypatientsavoidcoronaryartery bypass surgery.
Theprocedureisunfortunatelynot withoutrisk.Chestpainandevenheart attackscanoccurwiththeprocedure, thoughthisisnotverycommonnorare theothercomplications,whichcould includestroke.Manypatientssaythe mostuncomfortableaspectoftheprocedureishavingtolieontheirbacksand keepstillforseveralhoursafterthe procedure.Generally, though,theprocedureisconsideredaverysafeone.
Theinitialsuccessrateisonthe
orderof90%atsomeinstitutions.However,about25%to30%ofthevessels thatareopenedwillre-stenoseor becomeblockedwithinsixmonths. Thisissometimessolved byrepeating theangioplasty orcontinuingwith medicaltherapysincethetimeperiodof sixmonthscanbeanimportantdurationforgettingthepatientbackinto a healthierlifestyle.
Symptomsofre-stenosismaybethe sameasthoseexperiencedbeforethe angioplasty,suchaschestpainduring exertionorstress,shortnessofbreath, etc.Aftertheprocedure,occasionally anexercisestresstestisperformed.
Themostimportanttaskforthe patientistoreducehiscoronaryrisk factors–stopsmoking,limitalcohol intake,reducesugarandprocessed food,domoderateexerciseandlower stress.Yourphysicianwillhelpguide your activitylevel.
