ThousandsofvisitorstrekkedtoFultonlast weekendtoenjoyalltheofferingsofthe47th annualDutchDaysFestival,withtheweather justrightforsomeoutdoorcelebrationsofthe city’sDutchheritage.WhiletheMississippi Riverwasstillatfloodstage,thethemeof “Canals,Dikes&Floods”wasespeciallyfitting sincethedowntownhasbeenprotectedby a leveeaftertherecord-breakingfloodof1965.
ThedowntownwasfilledwithanabundanceofattractionsbothFridayandSaturday –foodandcraftvendors,kidsactivitiessuchas bouncehouses,balloonanimals,apettingzoo andMiller’sZooChootrainrides,woodenshoe makingdemonstrations,DutchKlompen dancing,anantiquetractorandclassiccar show,historicalpresentations,DeImmigrant windmilltours,DutchDays5KRun/Walk, a Dutchcostumefashionshow,woodenshoe racesandstreetscrubbersandaparade.
Newthisyearwasakickoffpartysponsoredbythe Fulton FunCrewinfrontofthe windmillonFridaynight.Revelersenjoyed illuminatedyardgames,livemusicbyThe Stockwells,abeergarden,andamotorized vehiclecruise throughthecity.Occasional rainonFridaynightonlydampenedclothes andhair,asthepartywentonwellinto thenight.
AtWierenga’sHeritageCanyon,Early AmericanCraftersincostumewelcomedvisitorstogobackintimeandexperiencelifelike itwasinthe1800sinthereenactmentvillage. NextdoorattheAndresenNatureCenter,P & CLittleRascalswassetupwithLarrythe llama,alpacas,sheep,goats,rabbits,chickens andaturkey.
Saturday’sfestivitiesconcludedwithacolorfulandentertainingparade,ledbystreet scrubbersin Dutchcostumes washing the streetswithpailsofwaterandbrooms.Charles T.Dykstrawas theGrandMarshalandColleenMoore,whowasbornduringthefloodof 1965,wasrecognized.TheParadeofDutch Provincesandlocalbusinesses,church groups,thehighschoolband,firstresponders, Shrinersallcontributedtothememorable event.AchurchserviceonSundayconcluded anothersuccessfulyear,thankstothededicationandeffortsoftheDutchDaysCommittee.
