Whiteside Count y Fair now accepting entries

O n l i n e e n t r i e s a r e n o w b e i ng accepted for the 151st annual Whiteside County Fair, which runs from Tuesday, Aug. 16, to Saturday, Aug. 20. The Whiteside County Fair no longer publishes Premium Books, but the pages are available online at www.whitesidecountyfair.org. Look for the “Entries/Premiums” for all the information needed. More than $119,000 in premiums are offered in prize money to the winners in more than 1,500 classes.

The Whiteside County Fair accepts Visa and MasterCard for entry and ticket purchases. Participants will be able to print the “Entry Blank” form and fill it out. Entries must be delivered to the Whiteside County Fair’s Secretary’s Office the week prior to the fair in person or mail them to P.O. Box 88, 201 W. Winfield St, Morrison.

CAROL A. MEURS

Born: August 9, 1942 in Morrison, IL Died: July 4, 2022 in Fulton, IL

CAROL A. MEURS, 79, of Fulton, IL, died Monday, July 4, 2022, at her home. There will be no funeral service or visitation. Cremation rites have been accorded. A private family graveside service will be held at Fulton Township Cemetery in Fulton. The Fulton Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials have been established to Unity Christian School Music Program and Beacon of Hope Hospice in Davenport, IA.

Carol was born August 9, 1942, in Morrison, IL, to Andrew and Jeannette (Dykstra) Bielema. She was educated in the Cottonwood Grade Schools. She was an 8th grade graduate of Unity Christian School and graduated from Fulton High School in 1960. She married Edward W. Meurs at First Christian Reformed Church in Fulton on August 2, 1963. Carol’s first job was at Burpees Seed in Clinton, IA, and then she worked at Fidelity Life. She was a bookkeeper at Central Bank, formerly Fulton State Bank, for a few years until starting her family and later rejoined until retiring to spend time with her granddaughter. She was a member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Fulton and was part of the Unity Christian School auxiliary. She also volunteered as a pink lady at Mercy Hospital for 24 years. Carol cherished spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include, her husband, Wayne; one daughter, Nicole Meurs of Fulton; one son, Matthew (Carolyn) Meurs of Fulton; four grandchildren, Amaya and John Carter and Halle and Andrew Meurs; one sister, Donna (Irv) Schaver of Georgetown, TX; two brothers, Delbert Beilema of Morrison, IL and Don (Andra) Bielema of Sterling, IL; one stepsister, Patricia (LaVerne) Pessman of Morrison; one sister-in-law, Nancy Bielema of Rockton, IL.

She was preceded in death by her parents; stepfather, John Vanderlaan; two sons, Rodger and Greg Meurs; one brother, Willard Bielema; one stepsister, Janet Vanderlaan; one stepbrother, David Vanderlaan.

RNA Youth Chapter fundraiser sale is July 15-16

The Royal Neighbors of America Prophetstown Youth Chapter is hosting a large moving sale from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, July 15, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 16, at 616 Portland Ave. in Morrison.

Stop by for deals on furniture, yard items, lawn and garden, knickknacks, and more. There also will be a bake sale, lemonade and coffee. All proceeds will support the Victory Homeless Shelter in Clinton.

Friends of the Hennepin Canal to host hike July 17

The Friends of the Hennepin Canal will be hosting their monthly Hike the Canal outing on Sunday, July 17.

This month’s hike will be from Bridge 33 to Bridge 28. This portion of the “Hike the Hennepin” is 4.1 miles long and named the “Leopard Frog.”

Meet at Lock 23 at 1:30 p.m. and follow the leader to Bridge 28, where hikers will be shuttled to Bridge 33 to begin the hike. To get to Lock 23 follow the canal signs north out of Atkinson.

The monthly hikes were developed by the Friends of the Hennepin Canal as an opportunity for everyone to get to know the canal personally by hiking it from the Illinois River to the Mississippi (including the feeder canal) in small legs.

You need not be a member of the Friends to join us in any of the hikes. There is no fee for the hikes. Join in the fun and bring a friend.

Medal of Honor Highway 20 caravan set for July 24

In honor of the Illinois portion of the newly designated Medal of Honor Highway 20 on Sunday, July 24, the Medal of Honor Highway 20 caravan will leave East Dubuque at 9:30 a.m. and drive across Illinois to the Indiana border. The caravan will be stopping briefly in Galena at 10 a.m., where the Fickbohm-Hissem Post 193 will have the privilege of honoring the only Galena Area Medal of Honor recipient, Sgt. Henry H. Taylor, a Civil War veteran. The community is invited to the brief ceremony.

Members of the caravan include the American Legion Department Commander Wayne L. Fischer and VFW past State Commander Bobby Welch.
