ebeccaHuizenga, arepresentativeof the hristmasWalk ommittee,said a namingcontestwillbeheldattheelementaryschoolforstudentsfromgrades K-5.Thecouncilhasbeenaskedtoselect awinnerfromthetopthreefinalistschosenbythe hristmasWalk ommittee.

lectionjudgesareresponsible for ensuringproperand orderlyvoting at pollingstationswithdutiesthatinclude signinginregistered voters,making sureonlyregisteredvotersarepermittedtocast a ballotandmonitoringthe conductoftheelection.Theyalsogive assistancetovoters by explaining votingproceduresandtheuseofvoting equipment.Judgesarepaid a stipend for theirwork on lectionDay. InWhiteside ounty,theyaredesignatedas eitherbelongingtotheDemocratic or epublicanparty.

AccordingtoIllinoiselectionlaw, eachelectionprecinctin a county shouldhavefiveelectionjudges.For a precinctwithmorethan600registered voters,thereshouldbeanadditional fiveelectionjudges.
Whiteside ountyhas60precincts. Ofthose,32have morethan600registeredvoters,accordingtoWhiteside
ounty’selectionresultsfromthe March19generalprimaryelection.
Thecountyhas a listof378previous electionjudgesthattheycouldpull from, elsonsaid.
“Technically,wehaveenough, but reallyit’sneverenoughbecausepeople willcallofflastminute,”shesaid.
Whiteside ountyneeds300election judgesinordertohavefivejudgesat eachprecinct.Another160will be neededtoplaceanadditionalfiveelectionjudgesatthe32precincts with more than600registeredvoters.
Butevenifthepollinglocationsare shortonelectionjudges,electionsstill takeplace.
“Wealwaysfind a way,” elsonsaid. If a precinctisshort, itwillpullfrom otherprecinctstobalanceouttheneed, shesaid.
On lectionDay, ov.5,pollinglocationsareopenfrom 6 a.m.to 7 p.m. lectionjudgestypicallyarriveearlier and stay a littlelatertohelpwithsetupand teardown.Basedonelectionresults fromthegeneralprimaryelection March19,about15 ofWhiteside ounty’s36,804registeredvoterscast a ballot. For a presidentialelection,“thereis always a muchhigherturnout,” elson said.

atrickSchaefer took 11thplaceatthe SAHigh School layTargetLeague hampionshipearlierthis month.Hewasoneof only1,800shootersfrommore than400highschoolsacross27states invited tocompeteatthefour-dayeventinMason,Michigan.
ualifying for aninvitetothechampionship requiresstudent-athletesandteamstoberegisteredin their respectivestate high schoolclay target league’s trap-shootingseasonandhavecompletedscoresforall fivecompetitionweeks ofthe springseason.They also mustmeet a minimumaverage forthe spring season and meetallextracurricularactivityparticipation requirementssetforthbytheirschools ompetitionsduringthespringseason consistof two25-targetsessions.Toqualifyfor a championship invite,shootersneedatleasta 23-target average forthe entireseason.
Thenationalchampionshipfeaturestwocompetitions,oneforteamsandtheother forindividuals. Accordingtothe SAHS TL competitionrules,shooters intheindividual competition are assigned two 50-targetsessionsforthe qualifyinground.
“Fortheindividuals,thetop400moveontothe finalround,”saidDrewTri,marketingmanager ofthe SA layTargetLeague. “Theseathletesare competing onthelinewithpeopletheydon’tknow, yetthey’re shakinghands,fist-bumpingandcheeringeach other on.”
ompetitors face another set oftwo 50-targetsessions inthe championship round, withawardsbased onchampionship roundtargets only,notcumulative scores.
Schaefercompeted in theindividual tournament, beating1,400othercompetitorsand shooting a perfect 100straightinthefinalstoadvancetothechampionshiproundbeforefinishing 11thinthenation.
“It’s all about having fun andI wouldn’t change a thing,”Schaefersaid.“WhenI didn’tmakethe top10, I walkedoffwith a smile.Itwas a great experienceand I hopetoplacehigherintherankings nextyear.”
Schaeferstartedshootingonlytwoyearsagoand was introducedtothesportbyhis grandmotherand MorrisonHighSchool trap-shooting coach Mary Schaefer.
“Mydadwasoneoftheoneswho startedtheMorrisonSportsman’s lub,”MarySchaefersaid.“When I was 14, I waswatchinghimandsaying, Hey,Dad,how come I can’tshoot ’Soheplaceda guninmyhand.”
MarySchaeferhasbeencoachingthehighschool team for the pastthreeto fouryears. atrickisthe thirdgrandchildshe’strained withtheteam.
“I like allmy grandkids totry it,”MarySchaefer said.
“ atrickis a natural.Hewatchesmyhusband,who is alsoverygood,and hejust figuresitout.It’sbeen a lotoffunhavingmygrandkidinthere.”
Toshootontheteam, MarySchaefer said students mustbeineighthgradeorolderand bring theirown 12- or20-gaugeshotgun.Kids do notneedtobe aMorrisonstudenttoparticipateontheteam unless their schoolhas a trap-shootingteamofitsown.

Theprojectwasacollaborative effortbetweenstudents’history classeswithMrs.KruthoffandMr. Armstrong, nglishclasswithMrs. Wolfandtheirfamilies.Itwas inspiredbytheoriginalprojectthat longtime nglishteacherMrs. Wiersemamadeatraditioninher eighthgradeclass.
Studentsenjoyedgettingtoknow moreabouttheirfamiliesandmany weresurprisedtolearnhowinterestingtheirfamilieswere.Wehopeyou willenjoytheirstories,too.

AccordingtoreportsfromtheIllinois omptroller,the ideoTerminalTax hasgenerated 994,530,875intotalstaterevenuesinceJuly1, 2023.Thisyear,Gov.JB ritzkerenacted a1 percentagepointtaxhikeonthevideogambling industrythathisofficeestimateswill bring inan additional 35millionoverthenextyear.
However,states arenottheonlyonesbenefiting fromthetax.Municipalitiesreceive5 ofthenet incomeforvideogamingterminalsintheirarea. TheIllinois ideoGamingActlimitslicensed establishmentstonomorethansixgamingterminals.
Accordingtodatafromthe IllinoisGaming Board,thereare160videogameterminalsacross 29establishmentsin Dixon.Lastfiscalyear fiscal
2024 thoseterminalsrakedin 10,521,533andpaid 3,576,326intaxes.
Afterthestatetookitsdueof 3,051,249,Assistant ityManagerMattHeckmansaid,Dixon’s sliceoftheactionwasjustmorethan 526,000, whichgoesintothecity’sgeneralfund.
“Itcanbeusedforanygeneralfundexpense likepublicsafety,policeandfire,publicworks,the streetdepartment,publicproperties,butit’sgenerallyusedforoperatingexpenses,”Heckman said.“Our o.1 sourceofrevenueforthegeneral fundisthesalestaxrevenue.Sowe’vemade aconcertedefforttoexpandoursalestaxbase.”

“Atourage,after53yearsofhard workandsacrifice,wedecidedit was timeforalittlerest,”Lindasaid.“Jim knowsthebusinessvery welland decidedtogiveitatry.Hewasactually bornonthedayofourgrandopening.”
Spangler’sprovideslandscap e design,hardscapeinstallation,garden decorandretailsalesofflowers,trees, shrubbery,mulchandotherlandscapingneeds.
ThebusinesshasbeenservingMorrisonandthesurroundingareasince thecoupleboughtthe five-acrepropertyat12540LincolnHighwayin1971.
“Intheearly 80s, wehada particularlydryspringandsummer,” Linda said.“Thatwas a miserableyear.The businesswasnogood and whenthe economywent,weprayedtohave enoughbusinessjustto paythebills. Therehavebeenmanyloyalcustomers
thatcame backyearafteryear,andwithoutthem, wewouldn’thavemadeit.”
Jimhadbeenrunninghisown mowingservice,whichhestilloperates,whenhedecidedtocomebackto the familybusinessin2001.Hispartnerin lifeandbusiness,KendraKirk, hasworkedforSpangler’ssince2013.
“ ltimately,whenLannyand Lindadecidedtoretire,wewerefaced with achoice eithertake overthe businessorfind a differentjob,”Kirk said.
Kirklovesworkingwithplantsand said shecouldnotimaginedoinganythingelse.Jim’sloveforlandscaping and dedication tothe communitywas enoughtokeephiminitfor thelong haul.
