NWS confirms tornado in Clinton and Fulton

The U.S. National Weather Service in the Quad Cities finalized their survey for a confirmed tornado that occurred in Clinton and Fulton during a line of severe storms on Friday, July 28. The tornado touched down from 9:16 to 9:18 p.m. with estimated peak winds of 75 mph. The path length was 1.44 miles from Riverview Park in Iowa across the river to Illinois, west of Fourth Street, north of the U.S. 30 bridge and southwest of J.T. Cullen Co. Inc. The tornado rating was an EF-0 and no injuries were reported.

Morrison man facing sexual assault charges kicked out of Scouts, on leave from teaching job

OREGON – A Morrison man accused of sexually assaulting a Boy Scout almost 20 years ago is on paid administrative leave from his job as a high school science teacher. He was removed from his position as director of a Boy Scout camp in rural Oregon and kicked out of the organization, court records show.

Jason L. Endress, 44, was arrested July 25.

Endress, who held “a position of trust, authority of supervision” over the boy, was charged with two counts of criminal sexual assault, according to the charging document. If convicted, Endress faces four to 15 years in prison, of which 85% must be served before probation could be granted.

He also is charged with two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, which carries three to seven years.

Both charges require those convicted to register as a sex offender.

Endress is accused of assaulting the boy, who was or was about to turn 15, in rural Oregon, where the Blackhawk Area Council’s Camp Lowden BSA is located, between May 24 and Sept. 6, 2004.

Endress was 25 at the time. He already was a teacher at Clinton (Iowa) High School, where he has taught for 22 years, and was an instructor at Lowden, according to the camp’s Facebook page.

He posted $10,000 of his $100,000 bond

Morrison Police Arrests

About 7:23 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2, the Morrison Police Department served a valid warrant in the 100 block of West Main Street. Matt McCole, 41, of Morrison, had a warrant for failure to appear/threatening a public official. McCole was taken into custody and transported to the Whiteside County Jail.

About 3:20 a.m. Friday, Aug. 4, Morrison police received an aggravated battery complaint at the Whiteside County Fairgrounds. During the investigation it was learned that James Kmoch, 57, of Champaign, battered the victim

and was released July 28. He has a preliminary hearing Aug. 16 in Ogle County Court and hired Sterling attorney James Mertes.

“There’s a difference between accusations and evidence,” Mertes said in a phone interview Aug. 3, noting the length of time that has elapsed since the assault is alleged to have happened. “The defendant is presumed innocent of the accusations against him.”

According to online court records, Endress has no criminal history in Iowa or the Sauk Valley.

The investigation began after the Boy Scouts organization contacted the sheriff’s department, State’s Attorney Mike Rock said. Illinois State Police assisted in the investigation.

According to a statement Aug. 2 from Boy Scouts of America:

“Jason Endress’ involvement in Scouting ended in June 2023 after BSA learned of allegations of inappropriate behavior that occurred nearly two decades ago.

“Upon being advised of the allegations, the Blackhawk Area Council immediately contacted law enforcement and took actions to preclude Mr. Endress from further participation in Scouting. The Council will continue to cooperate with law enforcement as requested.

“Endress is no longer permitted to register or participate in the Boy Scouts of America in any capacity.”

According to Camp Lowden’s Facebook page, Endress became camp director in summer 2018. He had been involved with the Scouts for more than 30 years, starting with boyhood mem-

“He has worked in various instructor and director positions continuously since then,” according to the post.

Endress was put on paid administrative leave from his teaching job, Clinton School District Superintendent Gary DeLacy said Aug. 2.

The district is doing its own investigation, but has yet to be able to talk to Endress, DeLacy said, adding he hopes to do so sometime this week.

In its statement to Sauk Valley Media regarding the sex abuse charges filed against Endress, Boy Scouts of America included the following:

Nothing is more important than the safety and protection of youth in our programs – it is our top priority. The BSA’s multilayered process of safeguards includes the following measures, all of which are designed to act as barriers to abuse:

• Mandatory youth protection training for all volunteers and employees.

• A leadership policy that requires at least two youth-protection-trained adults be present with youth at all times during Scouting activities and bans oneon-one situations where adults would have any interaction alone with children either in person, online or via phone or text.

• A thorough screening process for adult leaders and staff, including criminal background checks.

• A ban on the use of recording devices/cellphones near bathrooms and shower houses.

• The prompt mandatory reporting of any allegation or suspicion of abuse to law enforcement.

The BSA also offers a 24/7 Scouts First Helpline (1-844-SCOUTS1) and email contact address (scouts1st@ scouting.org) for help reporting suspected abuse or inappropriate behavior. Whiteside County Fair announces office hours for entries, ticket sales

The 152nd annual Whiteside County Fair will kick off Aug. 15. The office of the secretary and treasurer are in the building near the grandstand and will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, through Friday, Aug. 11, and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 12. E. Quinn, 73, of Port Byron, Illinois, passed away on Tuesday, August 1, 2023 surrounded by her three daughters. A Memorial Service was held Monday, August 7, 2023 at 6:00 PM at Gibson-Bode Funeral Home Port Byron. Visitation was from 4-6 PM prior to the service at the funeral home. Traute was born on June 23, 1950, in Heidelberg, Germany, the daughter of Ernst and Rose (Schwebler) Tretner. At the age of six, she and her mother immigrated to the United States where she was later adopted by her father, Donald Hamill, and became a US Citizen. Trudy graduated from Dixon High School in 1969 and later that summer married the love of her life, Samuel D. Quinn, on June 28 at Bethel Church in Dixon, IL.

Trudy and Sam went on to build a wonderful family and life together. They had three daughters, three granddaughters, built their dream home on their dream property,

Jerry was born on January 16, 1947, in Morrison, IL, to Bernard and Dorothy (Geerts) Engelkins. He attended Lockhart country school, Garden Plain Elementary School and graduated from Fulton High School, Class of “64”. He enlisted in the United States Navy and served his country for 4 years from 19651969, as a boiler technician 2nd Class E-5 on board the USS Mississinewa AO-144, serving in the Mediteranean Sea.

He married Diane (Bowman) Engelkins, the love of his life, on November 20, 1978 in Las Vegas, NV. They were married nearly 45 years.

Jerry was employed as a carmen welder at the Chicago Northwestern Railroad for 25 years. He also worked part time as a commercial fisherman. After injuries caused

and together enjoyed the fruits of their labor and successes. Trudy was employed by the United States Postal Service for more than 30 years before retiring in 2022. She took great pride in her career, starting as a substitute rural carrier, then working part-time loaning herself to various offices in many nearby communities, and eventually becoming a Postmaster in Albany, IL. Trudy was a dedicated daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and caregiver. She cherished her time with family, especially for the holidays, and she enjoyed watching her granddaughters play sports. Trudy also had a great love for music which likely began during her time singing in the Madrigal Choir at Dixon High School. She was kind, caring, witty, clever, hardworking, and just a very good person. Her passing has left a massive void in her surviving family members’ lives, and she will be deeply missed and loved forever.

his early retirement, Jerry became a licensed taxidermist for 12 years. He was very proud of his work. He also enjoyed helping his father-in-law, Art Bowman, do farm work.

Jerry loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter, which he learned from his Grandpa Jabbes Geerts, the man whom he looked up to. He raised and trained four hunting dogs. “Rusty”, the coon hunter, Brandy and Chelsie (Irish Setters), bird dogs and Queen (Black Lab), bird dog. His passion was deer hunting for over 53 years.

Jerry was very proud of his yard and used to plant a large garden. He always said that he was born 100 years too late. He and Diane loved to travel by car, especially out West. Jerry also went to Washington, D.C. on the Honor Flight in 2018.

He then taught at Rock Falls High School in Rock Falls, IL. Next, he taught and was an assistant football coach at Westview High School in Kankakee, IL. He later started teaching and coaching football at Prophetstown High School in 1968 until his retirement. Gary was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon, the Mississippi Hosta Society and Prophet Hills Country Club. He was a first assistant assessor and the assessor for the Prophetstown Township for 30 years. He was an avid golfer and also enjoyed growing hostas, reading and hunting.

Survivors include his wife, Sherry; one daughter, Kellie (Jay) Chamberlain of Johnstown, CO; one son, Kurt Newlon of Denison, TX; two grandchildren, James (Bri) Chamberlain and Candace Chamberlain; two great granddaughters, Elizabeth and Olivia Chamberlain; one sister, Glenda Newswander of Moline, IL.

1993: Country club receives help removing floodwater

60 Years

Sandra Meppelink, who with her parents will be moving to Grand Rapids, Michigan, was honored at a farewell party. Hostesses were Miss Clara Klavenga, sponsor of the Excelsior Girls Club of the Christian School, and Mrs. Blaine Miley and her daughter Jolene. Guests were classmates from the Christian School. The Rev. and Mrs. John Meppelink and family will move to Grand Rapids, where he will become pastor of the Calvary Christian Reformed Church.

The Fulton City Council acted to clarify regulations governing the installation of sidewalks along several streets in northeast Fulton. The council passed an ordinance providing the sidewalks be installed within one year of the date of the adoption of the ordinance.

BEVERLY JEAN JAEGER, 75, of Leesburg, FL, formerly of Fulton and Morrison, IL, and Camanche, IA, died Saturday, July 29, 2023, at her home.

A visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Friday, August 11th, 2023 at the Fulton Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home. Beverly was born June 2, 1948, in Moline, IL, to John and Ella May (Wiersema) Huizenga. She was educated in the Fulton Grade Schools and was a graduate of Fulton High School. She married Elmer “Bud” Jaeger on December 10, 1997, in Clinton, IA. Beverly worked at many restaurants in the Fulton area and owned and operated Granny’s

Interstate Power Company and Iowa-Illinois Gas and Electric Company announced they are studying the feasibility of building a jointly owned generating station in northwestern Illinois near Fulton.

New officers elected for the Fulton Chamber of Commerce board of directors include Steve Sealin, treasurer; Arthur Sikkema, president; Georgianna Fish, secretary; and Craig Huizenga, vice president.

Dale Giesler, one of the most popular and successful football coaches in Fulton High School’s history, has been offered the head coaching position at Clinton High School. He asked the River Bend School District Board to release him from his contract so he could accept the Clinton position. Giesler has coached 15 seasons at Fulton and his teams have made several appearances in the state playoffs with a state championship and 13-0 record in 1976.

Country club personnel used two small pumps to help in the water removal but the going was too slow to help preserve the grass on the fairways. Jack Seesser, a member of the Fulton Country Club and owner of Eastern Iowa Grain and Fertilizer in Clinton, came to the rescue by offering two large semis that pumped the water from the course and deposited it back into the Mississippi.

Eric Den Besten, formerly of Fulton, was a recent national champion in the single sculls rowing competition. His sister, Sara, also competed in the competition. Den Besten was somewhat surprised with the ease in which he dominated the competition at the American Rowing National Championships in Topeka, Kansas. The 18-year-old won the junior national single sculls championship by 17 seconds, an almost unheard of margin of victory in the sport.

Erie Police Department hosts National Night Out

The Erie Police Department hosted its third annual National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 1, at Erie Middle School, coinciding with hundreds of events across the country that bring officers and citizens together for free family-friendly events on the first Tuesday

of August. It was the 40th year of NNO community events nationwide.

Erie’s event was filled with family fun such as games and crafts, face painting, a Drunk Buster obstacle course, emergency vehicles, fire hoses and an inflatable water slide. There were scoops of free ice cream donated by Rise Up and goodies donated by Harvest Bakery & More. Nina’s Tacos

Round Grove Road east of Morrison to close Aug. 14-19

The Illinois Department of Transportation

recently announced that Round Grove Road, about 4 miles east of Morrison in Whiteside County, will be closed at the Union Pacific Railroad crossing from Monday, Aug. 14, through Saturday, Aug. 19.

The closure will allow the railroad to remove and replace the north track and remove the unused siding track through the roadway. A detour will be posted.

Bruce Hunter named 2023 ‘Friend of the Fair’

The Whiteside County Fair Board announced the 2023 “Friend of the Fair” is Bruce “Beav” Hunter.

Hunter has volunteered his time and services to the Whiteside County Fair over many years.

He has coordinated the wrecker services for the demolition derbies year after year while often bringing two wreckers of his own to assist on the track in getting the demo cars moved as quickly as possible to keep the show moving for the packed grandstand audiences. Whenever asked, Hunter has supplied “out of service” vehicles to the fairgrounds for use in thrill shows, including this year’s Monster Truck Show.

A lesser-known contribution is that Hunter assisted in the beautification and preservation of the historic round barn, which serves as the symbol and landmark attraction of the fair.

In 2013, the roof of the round barn was replaced and it was determined that the spire that sits atop the barn needed a face-lift as well. Fair board member Mike Wiersema, whose first job in high school was working with Hunter at Hunter’s Body Shop, handpainted the spire and asked Hunter, who graciously accepted, to seal the spire in his body shop to preserve its beauty for the next decade and beyond.

As the creator and host of the PBS series, “The Joy of Painting,” Bob Ross was a fixture on TV for more than a decade, where for 30 minutes each week he taught us to paint. Ross made art and painting accessible to anyone interested to learn from the comfort of their living room, and in the process, he became an enduring icon. As he created his “happy paintings,” he provided inspiration and instruction to his audience and coined well-known Ross-isms such as “Happy little trees,” and “There are no mistakes, just happy accidents.”

Today, Ross’ message lives on. He has inspired new generations of artists who are drawn to his distinctive hair, gentle voice and quirky, signature expressions. This year, Morrison’s Paint the Town 2023 T-shirt will feature a likeness of Ross in a playful nod and inspiration for anyone who wants to create.

Designed by young, talented local artist, W. Layne, the dark blue shirt features Ross with paintbrush in hand and Peapod the pocket squirrel ready to enjoy the “joy of painting” against a background of pine trees and majestic mountains.

“My love for drawing began at a very young age,” Layne said. “I’ve always loved art, but my appreciation for the arts started with cartoons.”

Like Ross, who frequently explained that artists could find freedom through their unlimited power to move mountains and bend rivers, Layne loves the idea of creating and directing the story through artwork.

“I enjoy drawing portraits, self-portraits and mostly everyday things and people,” said Layne, whose favorite types of art are

Hunter has been an integral part of the community as owner and operator of Hunter Body Shop in Morrison. While their main focus of business previously was collision repair, they currently are focusing on mechanical services for vehicles, including tires and alignments, as well as local towing in the area.

Hunter is grateful for the many customers that Hunter’s has assisted for more than 45 years.

The board is grateful to consider him a “Friend of the Fair.”

The Albany Fire Protection District hosted numerous departments and agencies for boat operations and water rescue training on the Mississippi River on Saturday, July 29. It’ll be a full day of fun in downtown Erie on Saturday, Aug. 12, at the annual Erie Street Fest, with activities scheduled from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.

to hold open auditions for ‘The Best Christmas Pageant Ever’

The Morrison Music Theatre Association announced auditions for “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” to be presented the first weekend of December during the Morrison Christmas Walk. Open auditions will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, and 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 27, at Bethesda Lutheran Church, 301 W. South St., Morrison. The play features roles for children and adults, a few Christmas carols and lots of laughs.

“The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” is adapted from the bestselling book by Barbara Robinson. The play is directed by Jalayne Riewerts, a 60-year veteran

of local and regional theater. Riewerts will be casting six girls portraying 8 to 13 years, six boys portraying 9 to 14 years, four women over 30 years old and two to three men over 30 years old. This will be the fifth time that Riewerts has directed this play.

A young boy of 13 was tossing a baseball-sized red rubber ball off the wall of his garage and catching the bounce back with his well-used glove on the far south side of Morrison on a hot summer day in 1966. Local merchants, Dodge dealer Eddie Schuler and grocery store owner Bill Wilkins recently had decided to sponsor two Senior League baseball teams for the town’s young men ages 13 to 15. The boys were excited to get a chance to play more baseball after their Little League careers had been completed. The boys filled out the rosters and played for three seasons, 1966-1968. Now 1969 was upon them, there was no American Legion team in town and their baseball playing days seemed to be over.

Several years earlier, Vernon Paul had moved his family to Morrison from Chicago. He had three young boys, the oldest 16, and they enjoyed watching and playing the great game of baseball. Paul was in need of a new automobile as his was getting very old with many

miles. After a short family discussion, Paul decided to keep the old auto and spend his extra money for baseball equipment to sponsor an American Legion baseball team in Morrison. Why would a man, relatively new to the community, take such action? The answer is simple. He did it so Morrison kids could enjoy the great game of baseball!

That first year, 1969, the team named Prestos – a musical term meaning very fast from Mrs. Paul’s business of providing piano lessons for youngsters in Morrison – played their games at Morrison High School. The field did not have an outfield fence and many baseballs were lost in Rock Creek located just a few feet west of the diamond. A new field was badly needed.

After a search, Morrison Junior High School allowed the Prestos to use its field in the summer of 1970, but they had to return it back to normal when school started in the fall. The Prestos agreed and much work needed to be done. The Prestos and their fans proceeded to build the field.

Using used telephone poles, they con-

structed a backstop frame. Woven fencing was attached to the posts to stop any balls that struck it. A bench was made from the cut-off telephone poles dug three feet in the ground and long, smooth 2-by-12 planks were nailed to them. A snow fence was the bill of fare for the outfield wall. It began on the leftfield line and stopped in right-center, where it met the high boundary fence adjacent to the private citizens’ property to the west. Right field was a land mine. It was only 220 feet from home plate and ran uphill with a steep incline. A small asset from this configuration was it could be used in picking off runners rounding first base too far. After a base hit to right field, Duane Stralow, the first baseman, would run toward the mound and then quickly circle back behind the runner. The right fielder would toss a bullet behind the runner and Stralow would sneak in, catch the ball and tag the baserunner, OUT! Surprisingly, the play worked several times.

A pitcher’s mound was built with a small dump truck of dirt that was rounded off by the young men. How -

ever, the dirt had to be removed after the season had been completed. We took down some old bleachers at the Morrison High School track and transported them to the junior high field for fans while watching the contests. They were dismantled and returned to the high school after the season.

Instead of just being given a field, the young athletes had to earn it. Strangely, human nature usually dictates that when something is obtained by a physical effort, it seems to be appreciated more and the Prestos treasured playing there. The Legion team used the field for three seasons (19701972). Then the team was allowed to play on the Legion Field on the north edge of town by the cemetery, which they did for the remainder of their existence until 1982.

Morrison had some fine athletes in the early years and they excelled on the field. From 1970-1973 (four seasons), the Prestos won more than 70% of their contests. They beat much

larger communities such as Freeport, Dixon, Rock Falls, Kewanee, Rock Island, Bettendorf and Moline. They even bested a Davenport program in 1972 that had won state titles the two preceding years (1970-1971). This was at a time when the Iowa tournament had just a one-class system. The Prestos won eight consecutive district baseball crowns (in a one-class system) in their first eight seasons. Not bad for a small town of 4,000 people.

The team’s last season was in 1982.

The Prestos got older and matured. Some went to college, others to the military, still another group got jobs and went straight to work. They married, raised families and went through the process of what we call “living life.” They became farmers, steel mill workers, teachers, carpenters, painters, artists, businessmen and many other pro-

On a cold, chilly January day in Morrison this year, some 52 years after these players took their last at-bats, six of them sat at the local McDonald’s and wondered out loud if they would ever see or talk to their old teammates again. After all, it had been many, many years since they had played together and many of them had not seen or heard from one another in decades. They did not know where many of their old teammates were living or even if they were still alive. Then, with the zest and vigor that only an old baseball player can have, they decided to try to set up a reunion. The date was set for July 30 at the Morrison Rockwood State Park Pavilion. The six old men hunted and found the Presto rosters and divided the

names up to try to find their old teammates. It was a long and grueling, undertaking, but well worth the effort as most were located.

Finally, the big day was at hand. They came from Rhode Island, Florida, Texas, Arizona, Colorado, Wisconsin, Iowa, California, Tennessee and Minnesota. They drove, flew and used any other means of transportation available to get to the park by noon July 30. How many attended? No one actually counted, but the large pavilion was overflowing. Many of these old men traveled many miles, spending hundreds of dollars just to join together for a few precious hours. Why did they come so far for so little? Was it for money? Awards? Medals? Trophies? I don’t think so. I believe that the gents came back to Morrison to pay tribute to a family that allowed them to participate in the great game of baseball so many, many decades ago. part of many events in my lifetime, but I cannot describe this day in just words alone. Therefore, I will not try. You be the judge as to why this event even happened in this day and age of “I and me.”

As Tim Paul, Paul’s oldest son was talking to the group at the pavilion on that beautiful, sun-drenched Sunday at Morrison Rockwood State Park, I glanced over my shoulder after I heard a thunk, thunk noise that I remembered hearing back in 1966 on Winfield Street. As I peered toward the bathrooms, a young local boy about 12 years old was tossing a baseball-sized red rubber ball off the outside wall of the bathroom and catching it with his old, well-worn baseball glove.

Conservationists to give away prairie seeds at Whiteside County Fair

The Whiteside County Soil and Water Conservation District is preparing for its booth at the Whiteside County Fair on Aug. 15-19 in Morrison. Volunteers will have information on programs and events offered by the SWCD, the Natural Area Guardians and the Education Fund, and they’ll also be giving away packets of prairie seeds. Stop by the booth and enter your name for the raffle prizes that include a tree and a nature photography book.

Antique tractor buffs will have a heyday at this year’s 152nd annual Whiteside County Fair, which runs Aug. 15-19.

Display your antique tractor at this year’s Whiteside County Fair. Each participant will receive a 152nd Whiteside County Fair plaque to display on their antique tractor. The exhibitors will fire up their engines for the parade about one hour before the start of that evening’s truck and tractor pulls at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18.

Anyone displaying their antique farm tractor at the fair will be required to buy a season membership pass,

which will automatically enter them into the exhibition. Due to space constraints, the display will be limited to “restored or good original” tractors. The fair also welcomes for display hit and miss engines that are in working order. No garden tractors or implements are allowed unless the implements are mounted to the tractor. Registration is recommended and can be done by calling Ron Shank at 815-7727157.
