Amish furniture store celebrates 35th anniversary

MORRISON – Tegeler’s Amish Furniture on state Route 78 south of Morrison is celebrating its 35th anniversary.

The store, which opened in August 1989, specializes in hand-finished Amish-made furniture, including dining sets, bedroom sets, outdoor furniture and more. The premium quality of its products and services is what’s grown the store into the popular destination spot it is today, owner Arlyn Tegeler said.

In 1989, Tegeler was running a farming equipment store at the same location selling grain bins and metal buildings. It was a typical day at the warehouse when a person stopped by the store with some equipment options for Tegeler to sell While they were talking, Tegeler noticed the wooden furniture in the van. Impressed by the quality, Tegeler asked if the furniture was for sale.

It turned out that the seller was Amish and he, along with his family, were craftsmen who were looking for a dealer in the area, Tegeler said.

Tegeler decided to give it a test run and brought some furniture to sell at

the Whiteside County Fair that year.

Based on the success at the fair, Tegeler set up as the dealer for the family. Since then, the warehouse slowly has been remodeled to become a showroom for the pieces and Tegeler’s Amish Furniture has become a dealer for more than 50 Amish craftsmen, he said.

Most of the craftsmen come from Arthur and Arcola, two of the oldest

Amish communities in Illinois, sales associate Sonia Schroeder said in an interview with Shaw Local.

Shoppers have a lot of options in the store’s almost 2-inch-thick catalog and can customize their pieces by choosing from 16 stain colors, six colors of varnish, seven types of wood, fabrics and hardware options.

Oak – either red oak or quarter-sawn white oak – has been the

most popular wood, Schroeder said.

All of the pieces carry a lifetime warranty. If something happens to a piece of furniture, customers can bring it back into the store to be fixed, Tegeler said.

In the showroom, they’ve devoted the most space to the bedroom and dining sets because they’re the most popular. In the summer, outdoor furniture is a big hit, Schroeder said.

Located “in the middle of the cornfields,” it’s “definitely a destination store,” Schroeder said. “Our quality is what sets us apart.”

To mark the 35-year milestone, Tegeler’s has an up to 35% off storewide sale through the remainder of September.

The sale is set up as a game in which people pick a paper leaf off a tree. The leaf will have a percentage written on it – anywhere from 20% to 35% – which indicates the amount discounted from the purchase.

“We’re looking forward to a good week,” Tegeler said.

The showroom is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Renovated park on 10th Avenue in Fulton gets new

FULTON – Fulton’s renovated park on 10th Avenue officially opened to the public Sept 10 during a ceremony that drew a large crowd

The refurbished park, originally called 10th Avenue Park or School Park, has been under construction for the past few months.

City officials unveiled the new name of the park – Fulton Friendship Park – “Where new friendships are made and relationships are fostered.”

The renovated park is Americans with Disabilities Act compliant and has new concrete walking paths, a new water fountain, a new concrete basketball court and matting under the playground equipment.

Fourth Ward alderwoman Jackie Wilkin, who spoke at the ceremony, thanked the donors and organizations that made the construction possible. In particular, she thanked the Timken Foundation, which donated $100,000.

The new name for the park came from a competition hosted by Fulton’s parks and recreation program.

“And we want to thank you, the community, who helped send in 60 submissions for the name,” Wilkin said. “Since the equipment opened in June, the park has been packed. New friendships are being made daily. It’s our hope that this community space will be a site for developing friendships for years to come.”

After the ribbon-cutting, guests were treated to hot dogs, chips and ice cream.

1964: No more high school buses for spectators

60 years Sept. 30, 1964

Fulton Community High School buses may not be used in the future for transporting spectators to athletic contests and other school affairs that take place away from Fulton. The school board reluctantly decided to discontinue the practice of using school buses to transport spectators to out of town contests for a small fee after a ruling that the use of the buses was illegal. Arrangements have been made for Warren Wiersema Charter Bus Service to take spectators to out of town games. The charity of several Fulton citizens and businesses has been abused in recent weeks. It seems travelers pretending to be destitute appealed for help from Fulton people, but it was learned the travelers were not destitute and had been making similar appeals with some success in other nearby towns. In Fulton, a car stopped at a local business and the driver said his transmission was out of commission and he had no money and no food for his family. When the businessman offered to call the chief of police to see if help could be obtained, the driver took off at a high speed.

Sparbel won a foot race with Larry Jones and succeeded in capturing him after he had escaped in Clinton and crossed the river into Fulton. Wilke’s letter read, “I wish to commend you, mayor, for your police chief’s cooperation in this matter and would appreciate the proper recognition being given Chief Sparbel by your office.”

Whiteside County Sheriff Roger Schipper and his staff are spending a great deal of time investigating two burglaries in Garden Plain Township. In both instances, equipment and buildings were set on fire. In the burglary at the Garden Plain Feed Service, intruders tried to burn down the warehouse and also drove a grain truck a short distance and then destroyed it by fire. In another burglary, robbers set fire to the interior of the Par Time Mini Golf building and caused considerable fire and smoke damage. The building is near the intersection of Garden Plain

Road and Route 84.

For several months a committee comprised of parents, businesses, professionals and educators have been meeting to determine the needs of the River Bend School District for the year 2000 and beyond. Superintendent Kent Hammer gave a report of those meetings to the board. The committee is concentrating on a three-phase plan for the district. The first phase is to concentrate on the economic stability of the district and its ability to generate enough funds to continue current programs and those needed in the future. The second phase would be to study the high school building and the possibility of expansion. The third phase will study the other facilities in the district to determine if they will be adequate in the years ahead.

The Fulton City Council held a special meeting about the proposed hotel/ motel in Fulton. First on the agenda was to create a special tax allocation

Scarlet fever versus rheumatic fever

Scarlet fever is a disease that always tends to create a fair amount of interest whenever there is an outbreak of several cases in an area.

Part of the problem comes when confusing scarlet fever with one of its relatives, rheumatic fever. Because scarlet fever is associated with the streptococcus agent, it may indeed go on to cause rheumatic fever and therefore is potentially serious.

In general, though, treatment is readily available and is for the most part no different than the treatment directed toward strep throat.

Part of the panic that occurs with scarlet fever comes from the prominent rash and other clinical characteristics. Classically there is a fine sandpaper type of rash that is red in nature appearing first in the armpits, groin and neck and later becoming generalized, but usually there is not much on the face.

There may, however, be a little bit of flushing on the cheeks and forehead and the area around the mouth may be a little pale. The rash often blanches with pressure.

The tonsils, like with strep throat, may be quite reddened and covered with a thickened material. During the early days of the illness, there may be a white coat on the tongue with red areas projecting through known as “the white strawberry tongue.”

• GLIMPSES

Continued from page 6

fund for the motel. Next was to create a hotel/motel tax ordinance, which will not begin until Jan. 1, 2006, and will be implemented to help get it off the ground. Total cost to get the hotel built and running is about $3.8 million. The hotel will have 51 rooms and be part of the Comfort Inns and Suites, which is a member of Choice Hotels Fulton Curves, which is located in the strip mall with the Shell Express, is expanding to include tanning. Supreme Tan will have its grand opening Sept. 27. They will have a new standup bed, which is new to the area, and a flat bed.

After several days, the white coat peels and the red tongue persists. This is known as “the red strawberry tongue.”

The skin begins to peel on the face in fine flakes toward the end of the first week and then begins to peel over the trunk into the hands and feet. This process may last up to six weeks although it’s usually much shorter.

Accompanying all these symptoms may be typical signs of sore throat along with fever, vomiting, headache, chills and abdominal pain.

One of the main reasons to treat this disease early is to help in the prevention of rheumatic fever.

The treatment essentially is the same as for strep throat. The treatment probably does not affect the clinical course of the rash, although it often helps with many of the other symptoms.

Your doctor may want to do a throat culture to help identify strep organisms, although this is not always done It is very important to take all of the medicine as directed because inadequate treatment may lead to rheumatic fever.

In summary, scarlet fever still flares up from time to time, and although it gives a dramatic presentation, it usually is a disease that is readily treated.

The distinction should be made that scarlet fever, unlike rheumatic fever, does not cause permanent damage of the heart valve, brain or kidneys.

Farm and Field

BRANCHES ROOTS BRANCHES

Climate change poses a threat to various industries, not the least of which is the agricultural sector. Agricultural industry insiders recognize that the changing climate has been forcing farmers and agricultural organizations to adapt and adjust for decades, and that need to be flexible won’t change in the years to come. One of the changes many farmers may consider in coming years, if they haven’t already, is a pivot to regenerative agriculture practices Regenerative agriculture could have a profound impact on the world over the next half century, so now may be a great time to gain an understanding of the practice

What is regenerative agriculture?

Regenerative agriculture is a production system that focuses on reducing water usage and other inputs as part of a larger attempt to prevent land degradation and deforestation. According to the organization Green America®, regenerative agriculture is designed to harness the power of photosynthesis in plants to sequester carbon in the soil. The ability to do that can improve soil health, crop yields, water resilience, and nutrient density

Why should people be interested in regenerative agriculture?

GreenAmerica® notes that regenerative agriculture draws down atmospheric carbon dioxide. That’s a significant benefit, as Climate.gov, which is a product of various departments within the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration, reports that adding more carbon dioxide to the environment is causing global temperatures to rise. In fact, observations from the NOAA Global Monitoring Lab in 2021 revealed that carbon dioxide alone was responsible for about two-thirds of the total heating influence of all human-produced greenhouse gases. GreenAmerica® reports that, at scale, regenerative agriculture could help to reverse the climate crisis by drawing down atmospheric carbon dioxide. Another reason to consider regenerative agriculture is its connection to topsoil. GreenAmerica® reports that the world is on the cusp of running out of topsoil, which is vital to growing food. Regenerative agriculture rebuilds topsoil, which can lead to greater food security across the globe

What are some regenerative agriculture practices?

Regenerative agriculture practices include the usage of cover crops, a reduction in tilling, crop rotation, and spreading compost GreenAmerica® notes that regenerative agriculture practitioners also avoid the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and factory farming. As the climate crisis continues to challenge the agricultural sector, regenerative agriculture could help farmers and the larger industry successfully confront those issues.

HOW RISING FOOD DEMAND IS AFFECTING FARMING

The population is growing and so is its demand for food to fuel those extra bodies. Harvard Business Review reports the global population has quadrupled over the last century It’s predicted that, by 2050, the population will exceed nine billion people. The world is not able to feed all of its inhabitants, according to Penn State. There are more than one billion people who are estimated to lack sufficient food, and two billion who do not receive adequate nutrition. Researchers from the Institute on the Environment at the University of Minnesota concluded that, to feed the world by 2030, yields on maize, rice, wheat, and soybeans will have to rise by 60 to 110 percent. At the start of 2023, projections show them only increasing by 45 to 60 percent. There are a few reasons why food supply may not meet up with demand.

• Climate change: Climate change is predicted to cause issues to crop yields, especially in portions of the world where the population is growing the fastest For example, a recent NASA study published in the journal Nature predicts that high greenhouse gas emissions may cause corn output to decline as early as 2030, but wheat output would increase. Farmers may need to roll with the punches and shift operations to cope with the environmental changes.

• Decreased commercial farming interest: Fewer people are working in farming. Land prices for expansion, new government mandates and regulations, and the impact of immigration and trade policies have made farming less attractive than it once was. Fewer commercial operations result in a diminished food commodity output

• Consumer waste: Food loss and waste (FLW) is a widespread issue, posing a challenge to food security. The World Bank estimates 30 percent of all food across the globe is wasted, amounting to 1.3 billion tons of food per year The average global household wastes 74 kg of food each year, according to the United Nations Environment Programme’s 2021 Food Waste Index. Food waste is an issue that needs a solution as the world looks for ways to feed an expanding population in the decades to come. In order to improve output, farmers have to make some changes. These can include investment in tools and technologies that enable farmers to apply nutrients more precisely and at lower cost, advises the Environmental Defense Fund. Seeds that need less water and fewer nutrients, as well as new fertilizers that are less likely to be lost to air and water, are some additional ideas. Farmers also may want to employ green practices, such as hydroponics and drip irrigation, if they haven’t already, to improve efficiency and cut costs. The public also may need to petition their lawmakers to make it easier for farm workers arriving on working visas to man the fields

Food demand continues to rise, and it has become challenging for agricultural operations to keep up.
