The Albany Marina was filled with boats, trailers and anglers Sept. 24-25 when the Illinois BASS Nation held their state championship on Pool 14. The 2022 team champion was the River Rats, the state champion boat was Art Mensik, and the champion co-angler was Wes Gehrt. The top six anglers also qualified for the 2023 regional team. Illinois BASS Nation promotes the sport of bass fishing and offers two levels of adult competition and two levels of youth competition. Anglers are pictured during weigh-ins of their catches of the day on Saturday, Sept. 24, with all fish released after getting weighed.

Boys golf

Fulton golfers take team, individual

titles at 1A Galena Regional: Led by medalist Landon Meyers, Fulton took the team title at the Class 1A Galena Regional on Wednesday at Galena Golf Club.

The Steamers shot a 347 to defeat River Ridge by two strokes. Galena was the third team advancing with a 360.

Meyers fired an 82 to defeat East Dubuque’s Jacob Lange by one stroke and River Ridge’s Camden Flack by two. Jacob Voss and Reed Owen both shot 86s to tie for fifth for the Steamers, while Brady Read finished 14th with a 93, Zach Winkel tied for 20th with a 97, and Dawson Price tied for 30th with a 102.

Boys cross country

Three Rivers Conference Meet: ErieProphetstown was second, Newman took third, and Bureau Valley finished fourth in the TRAC Meet at Prophet Hills Country Club.

Riverdale won the team title with 25 points, while the Panthers (63), Comets (69), Storm (101), and Mendota (136) rounded out the top five. Riverdale’s To mm y Mu rra y (1 5:4 1. 31), L a n d is Musser (16:06.56) and Peyton Sand (16:44.78) finished 1-2-3 individually.

Morrison, which did not field a full team, was led by Isaiah McDearmon in 50th place (20:55.41).

Girls cross country

Three Rivers Conference Meet: ErieProphetstown ran to a runner-up finish at the TRAC Meet at Prophet Hills.

Sherrard won the team title with 42 points, followed by the Panthers (74), Riverdale (101), Rockridge (101), Princeton (102), St. Bede (104), and Newman (112).

J i l l i a n N o r m a n f i n i s h e d f i f t h (21:33.47) to lead Erie-Prophetstown, while Newman’s Claire Crisham placed eighth (21:52.06). Morrison’s Emma Christin took 12th (22:41.41).

Clara Ashdown (23:45.69), Chloe Slock (23:46.47) and Brooke Lalley (23:47.15) went 18-19-20 for E-P.

Girls swimming

Sterling tops 6-team field at UT Sprint

Invite: It was a dominant showing for the Sterling girls swimming & diving team (419), which more than doubled second-place Macomb’s team score (205). Morrison was a close third, tallying a 202.

M o r r i s o n ’ s L a n d r i H a r m o n , BayLeigh Brewer, Paige LaShelle and Schyon Drolema won the 100 freestyle relay (52.78).

Harmon, Brewer, Drolema and Bella Scachette were the runners-up in the 100 medley relay, clocking a 1:01.77.

Drolema was a double-winner individually, leading the 100 freestyle field (57.95) and the 50 freestyle (26.08).

Volleyball

Fulton def. Amboy 25-11, 25-23: The Steamers downed the Clippers in two sets in an NUIC match in Amboy.

Leaders for Fulton (15-4) were Brooklyn Brennan with five kills, 12 digs and seven assists, Miraya Pessman with eight digs and six assists, Ava Bowen with eight digs and two kills, and Resse Germann with seven digs. Reese Dykstra and Annaka Hackett added three kills apiece for the Steamers.

Football

Rockridge 36, Morrison 22: The Rockets’ offense put up 22 second-quarter points, and its defense held the Mustangs to seven second-half points to secure a Three Rivers Rock win.

Morrison quarterback Danny Mouw went 9 for 21 for 194 passing yards, tossing touchdowns of 48 and 57 yards.

Chase Newman caught both touchdown passes and totaled six catches for 149 yards for the Mustangs (2-4, 1-2).

Brady Anderson rushed for 97 yards with an 80-yard touchdown run. He was the leading Morrison rusher.

Lena-Winslow 54, Fulton 32: After a tight first half, the Steamers (3-2, 3-1) couldn’t keep up with the Panthers after the break in an NUIC road loss.

Brayden Dykstra was 25-for-37 passing for 248 yards and three touchdowns for Fulton, and Baylen Damhoff had eight catches for 101 yards and two scores.

Dykstra connected with Damhoff on a 37-yard scoring strike to open the scoring with 7:30 left in the first quarter, then Lukas Schroeder scored on a 1-yard run early in the second quarter to make it 12-8 after Gage Dunker scored on a 43-yard run for Le-Win.

Gunar Lobdell ran in from 80 yards to give the Panthers a 16-12 lead, but the Steamers answered with a 36-yard touchdown pass from Dykstra to Ethan Price for a 19-16 lead with 4:50 left in the first half.

But Dunker scored from 24 yards out with 44 seconds left before halftime, then added a 13-yard TD run less than four minutes into the third quarter to make it 32-19 Le-Win. Lobdell tacked on a 77-yard scoring run, then Jake Zeal ran in from 51 yards out for a 46-19 lead with 2:13 left in the third quarter.

Schoreder ran in from 6 yards early in the fourth quarter, then Damhoff caught an 11-yard TD pass from Dykstra to end the scoring with 1:38 to play, after Dunker added his fourth TD run from 11 yards out with 6:55 remaining.

Joel Ford led Fulton with 38 yards on nine carries, and Schroeder added 28 yards on seven rushes. Ryan Eads ran for 24 yards and also caught six passes for 36 yards.
