Morrison Garden Club marks 75 years

MORRISON – For three-quarters of a century, Morrison’s residents and visitors have benefited from the artistry, hard work and joyful dedication of Morrison Garden Club members.
For the past 75 years, treasured volunteers have distributed their talents throughout the community, planting trees in French Creek Park and the Bark Park and leading plantings at the Grove Hill Cemetery fountain. They also provided comprehensive landscaping for the new Morrison Community Hospital entrance and seasonal decorating of large clay pots along Main Street, in addition to clever Christmas displays at the corner of U.S. Route 30 and Illinois Route 78.
On Oct. 5, members celebrated at Dunlap Lodge 321 A.F. & A.M., 227 E. Main St., with celebratory T-shirts.

Alma’s ‘stories’ to be focus of program Oct. 17 in Fulton FULTON – The Volunteer Millers at de Immigrant will be sponsoring a special program titled “(NOT) Alma’s Stories: Highlights from 40 years of QC Journalism” at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, at the Windmill Cultural Center.

Trick or Treat event at Morrison church, Oct. 31: Bethesda Lutheran Church will be participating in trick or treat festivities from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, in the lower level of Bethesda church, 301 W. South St. Volunteers will be in costume to pass out treats in the multi-purpose room. There will be hot chocolate and cider for
adults who accompany their children. Based on past experience, a lot of children are expected to take part in the event. Nonedible treats (pencils, stickers, etc.) will be available for those with food tolerance issues.

Law enforcement agencies are reminding children and their parents to watch for traffic and to only accept wrapped or sealed candy, which should be inspected before eating.

the next 25 years, she wrote at least 1,500 centerpiece stories as well as thousands of general interest news stories. She and her husband, David, live in Bettendorf and have two adult children and two grandchildren.

Sandy Crouse and John Almack were voted king and queen for the nursing wing.
Chester Davenport and his wife, Betty, were voted king and queen for Resthave’s Assisted Living wing.
Resthave’s royalty is chosen by residents, staff, families and friends voting for their choice.
The kings and queens were treated to sashes, corsages, boutonnieres, Resthave Loves Our Mustangs T-shirts and a fancy car ride in Morrison High School’s homecoming parade.

Trap tags available for Upper Mississippi refuge
Trappers will need a state-issued trapping license and habitat stamp

THOMSON – Trap tags for the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge in Thomson are available for sale.
Trap tags can be bought for $30 using cash or check at the Savanna District office at 7071 Riverview Road in Thomson or at other district offices in Wisconsin and Minnesota, and require a state trapping license. Refuge employees cannot access the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources electronic system, so Wisconsin residents need to provide printed proof of their trapping privileges.
According to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, trap tags are used to identify trap owners trying to catch furbearers, which are wild animals typically hunted for their fur. That include beavers, badgers, foxes, minks and others. Tags must be marked with the owner’s name and address or a custom identification

Trappers in Illinois require a valid trapping license and a state habitat stamp. A trapper education course must first be completed before purchasing a trapping license for trappers born on or after Jan. 1, 1998.
Trappers with a state-issued license can apply for a special-use permit allowing them to set up to 40 traps per day at the refuge.
Hunting or trapping bobcats requires a special permit and some furbearers, such as otters and bobcats,
require buying a pelt tag within 48 hours of their harvest. Pelt tags only can be purchased over the counter from licensed vendors.

Della Rae (Young) Sarginson, 86, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, September 30, 2024. She was born on December 5, 1937, in Cordova, Illinois to Casper Maurice “Morrie” and Fern (Hewitt) Young. A celebration of her life will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, November 2nd, at Gibson – Bode Funeral Home, Port Byron, Illinois. Interment of ashes will be held privately at Manchester Cemetery, Manchester, Illinois on Sunday, November 3rd.

TEMPLE, 97, of Morrison, IL, died Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at Resthave Home in Morrison.
Her funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 12, 2024, at the Morrison United Methodist Church with Rev. Sun-ah Kang, pastor of the Morrison United Methodist Church, officiating. A visitation will be held from 9:00 AM until the time of the funeral. The Morrison Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Interment will be at Grove Hill Cemetery in Morrison. A memorial has been established to Morrison United Methodist Church.
Catherine was born September 13, 1927, in Morrison, IL, to Ralph and Nancy (Tillema) Slager. She attended Franklin Corner’s oneroom school and graduated from Morrison High School in 1945. On June 16, 1946, she married Elmer G. Temple in Fairhaven, IL, and they shared their lives for over 70 years until Elmer’s passing on February 7, 2017. She was a dedicated partner in their farming operation in the Garden Plain area. Her deep

When Suellen was asked why she took up scuba diving, the answer was: “After being married for 30 years, we finally had a honeymoon.” They discovered scuba diving on that trip and have been enjoying it for the past 18 years.

They shared 66 years together, having three children, six grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. Della is survived by children Steven Sarginson (Karen), Jayne Meggs, Mary Olson (Mike); grandchildren Elizabeth Bostwick (Rob), Rebecca Gordon, Megan Jackson (Eric), Christie Vick, Emily Lillie (Joe), and Morgan Meggs; great grandchildren Matthew and Michael Bostwick, Quinn, Jack and Andrew Gordon, Cooper and Raely Jackson, Tripp and Gracie Vick, Henry, Thomas and Mary Kate Lillie; Brother Duane “Duey” Young, sisterin-law Marge Young and sister-in-law Judy
faith and commitment to her community were evident in her lifelong service. She was an active member of Garden Plain Church, where she taught Sunday School and Bible School, served as Sunday School superintendent, established and organized the church library, and helped coordinate a joint Bible School with Newton Reformed Church at Garden Plain School, which served 140 children. After 40 years of service there, she became a member of Morrison United Methodist Church, assisting with computer work, office duties, and serving on the Memorial Committee, Mission Committee, and Ad Council. Catherine enjoyed traveling with her husband, and after moving to town, she spent much of her time sewing.
Survivors include two daughters, Bonnie Adams of Geneseo, IL, and Becky (Stephen) Dickhut of Port Byron, IL; one son, Donald (Karen) Temple of Fulton, IL; nine grandchildren, Lisa (Chris) Davis, Lori (Bryan) Phillips, Jeff (Dawn) Dickhut, Brian Dickhut, Dave (Karen) Dickhut, Laura Temple, Tonya (Aaron) Krueger, Doug (Abrigail) Temple, and Krista (Kyle) Wiebenga; seventeen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Elmer; one son-in-law, Stephen Adams; two sisters, Alene Rahn and Barbara Snyder Kramer; two brothers, Harold and Wilber Slager.

They said the Phillippines is their favorite place to dive and there are other beautiful places to dive such as the Galapagos Islands, the Bahamas, Fiji islands and Belize.
One of their favorite places is in what is called black water, meaning at night. They also enjoy diving in bodies of waters with
reefs. As with any dive, the diver must be wise and conservative when diving in and returning to the boat.

Della’s treasure in life was her family. So many of her best family memories were made alongside her two brothers, ‘sisters’ and their families. She enjoyed knitting and sewing, having lovingly made so many dresses, pants, and sweaters for her girls. She was a member of the Boy Scouts of America and served as Den Mother for several years as well as spending a lot of days behind the counter of the concession stand for the East Moline Little League. She was active in the PTA, a member of Royal Neighbors of America and numerous other clubs and organizations. Della also treasured the memories of Friday night golf outings with David and best friends Ron and Carol Murphy. Della cherished her ‘best’ friendship with Carol for more than 60

Carol Jean was born October 22, 1934 in Moline, IL, the daughter of Hernandez and Ruth (Fenno) DeWilfond. She married James “Jim” R. Butzer on October 31, 1959. Together, with the help of their children, Carol and Jim owned and operated an amusement

After moving to Texas, Della continued her love of playing golf with David and many great friends at Walnut Creek Country Club in Mansfield, where they carried a lifetime membership since 1976. Della’s participation in the Ladies Golf Association at WCCC extended for many years, actively playing into her early eighty’s. Della also loved traveling extensively with David, and together with family members and precious friends. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Shriners Burn Hospital, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or the Alzheimer’s Association. The family would also like to warmly acknowledge the staff and friends at the Legend of Mansfield, who welcomed both Della and David with loving arms and care.

Red Cross: Blood donors vital in response to impact of hurricanes Helene, Milton

The American Red Cross is continuing to work to restock critically needed blood products uncollected because of the ongoing impact of hurricanes Helene and Milton in the southeast and Florida.
Donors outside of affected areas are encouraged to make an appointment to give now and help keep the blood supply stable in the weeks to come.
Since making landfall, Helena and its aftermath have led to the cancellation of more than 100 blood drives, causing thousands of blood and platelet donations to go uncollected.
“For so many people living with urgent medical care needs, blood transfusions are essential, and donations in the Southeast are key to keeping our nationwide network stocked. The Red Cross operates through a national inventory with the ability to move blood wherever and whenever it is needed most,” the Red Cross said in a news release.

Underground Railroad is topic of Fulton Historical Society meeting Oct. 20

FULTON – The Fulton (Martin House) Museum will host its monthly program at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20.
This month’s presentation is on the Underground Railroad as it relates to the strategic role played by Clinton County, Iowa, and Whiteside County in the years before the Civil War.
Slavery was the most contentious issue in America before the Civil War. The Underground Railroad is the story of enslaved people who took the question of their personal freedom into their own hands and the people who aided them in their quest to find safe haven in Canada. The secret network was so effective that slave catchers declared it was as if escapees from slavery had gone underground.
The presentation will illustrate how geography and human conscience combined to make Clinton and Whiteside counties key players in the Under-
ground Railroad network.
The presenter will be Herb Shafer, a retired pastor and amateur historian. For 47 years, he pastored at Iowa churches, including the First Methodist Church of Clinton from 1998 to 2007. He and his wife, Jan, then resided in southeast Iowa, where he pastored in Mount Pleasant and later in Van Buren County.
For nine years, Jan operated the Bentonsport Village Bed and Breakfast. Guests’ curiosity about the Underground Railroad led to a search for documented stories to provide a glimpse of the workings of the “freedom trail.”
The results of that research, as it relates to the local community, will be part of the presentation.
The Shafers retired to this area in 2022 and live in Fulton.
The program is free and open to the public. The Martin House is located at 707 10th Ave. in Fulton. The building is accessible through the north entrance. Refreshments will be served.

1964: Cash stolen from the Fulton office of Morrison Telephone Company

Fulton friends of the late W. F. “Ford” Massey will be interested in the news that the Savanna football field will be formally dedicated to him and named “Massey Field” in a ceremony during halftime between a football game. Mr. Massey was a popular teacher and coach in Fulton public schools for several years before going to Savanna to take a position as a school administrator.
More that $638 in cash was stolen from the Fulton office of the Morrison Telephone Company. The rear door of the office building on Fourth Street was broken open and a safe inside the office was forced open. Money was taken from drawers and other locations, but there was no damage to the telephone equipment.

It was a wet night for football, but the homecoming queen and her attendants paid the rain little heed as they watched the Steamers the entire game from a stage in front of the grandstand. Bush’s, a restaurant in Fulton since 1901 and well known in the area, closed its doors last week. The building and all its contents were sold to Larry and Karen Groh, who intend to keep it operating as a lunch and supper club. The transfer was effective and immediately work began on an extensive remodeling project. The restaurant will open under the name of The Port Hole, Too.
Schmaling Memorial District Library has three anniversaries in 1984. The building was erected in 1909, which makes this the 75th year. It became a district library in 1974. The library was organized in 1894, which is another decadal anniversary. The building was made possible by a gift of $5,000 from Andrew Carnegie and another one of $3,000 and a building lot from Dr. Hannah Schmaling.

Mark Thunstedt, a freshman at Fulton High School and a member of the golf team, recently made a hole-in-one at the Fulton Country Club. The shot was made during practice on hole No. 3, a 125-yard par three. The shot was witnessed by Nick Flickinger, Aaron Krueger and Zac Cole.
Twenty Fulton High School band members have been named to the 1994 Three Rivers All-Conference Band. This band is composed of selected students from each high school in the Three Rivers Athletic Conference. This select group of musicians will have the opportunity to rehearse and perform under the direction of guest conductor Jack Simon, who is the director of bands at Rock Valley College in Rockford. Simon will rehearse the group during the day on Oct. 31 and conduct the band in concert that evening.

Fulton’s Millers were recognized at the annual year-end Miller dinner. A brief meeting was held where several awards were presented by Secretary Ron Koehn. Koehn presented Vishnu Mulay with a certificate for achievement above and beyond the duty. He was the leading salesman for the group exceeding daily expectations of the miller group. Koehn challenged him with a new quota for next year. Six millers were presented caps donated by Cousins. Mike Kramer and Rick Buikema were recognized for their work on the repair to the wallower at the windmill. Ed Kolk and Arnie Huizenga received
caps for their work at the mill throughout the season, Kent Huisingh for his pickup and transportation of hard white wheat from Kansas, and Heidi Kolk received a special thank you for her help in the transfer of secretarial duties.
Trinity Reformed Church will be celebrating its 75th anniversary Oct. 16 and 17. The church has chosen a theme “Remembering, Celebrating and Anticipating.” They are planning for this to be a time that will celebrate the past and prepare for the future.

The Fulton Chamber of Commerce was awarded with a D. S. Flikkema Foundation grant. The grant is intended to help defray cost of the Fulton Christmas Walk. The Fulton Boy Scouts have a tradition of illuminating the Fulton Dike each year with candles. The grant will help cover the cost of these candles.
The varsity golf team traveled to Morrison to compete in the regional. Players included senior Lucas Wiebenga, freshman Jason Sikkema, junior Brett Terrrock, senior Justin Petersen, junior Jacob Outzen and junior Dustin Rowland. The Steamers golfers had great success. Terrock, Wiebenga and Petersen all advanced to the sectional.

Ingrown toenails can require extensive treatment
It is difficult to believe that something so small that starts so slowly can be so painful, but those who have experienced ingrown toenails certainly are aware of the trouble they may cause.
While often they remain a painful nuisance and sometimes quite so at times, they also can progress on to some potentially significant infections or cause other problems that may require extensive treatment.
The good news is that most ingrown toenails generally can be prevented. In the early stages, conservative treatment often has been quite helpful and may save someone

a painful and expensive procedure.
The No. 1 cause of an ingrown toenail is simply cutting the nail too short. When this happens, the nail, as it grows out, grows into the folds of the skin or the folds of skin that overlap with the nail. Often this is not immediately noticed until there has been a fair amount of progression and the nail is well imbedded into the skin.
This starts to lead to pain and inflammation and then sometimes infection, sometimes having some drainage, etc.
The following measures of prevention also may be considered part of the early treatment or treatment for all but the more advanced ingrown toenails.
• Avoid cutting the nail too short. Always have it longer than the skin underneath it.
• Avoid pressure to this region of any form, such as too tight of shoes or any other constriction.
Finally, if you should have a more severe ingrown toenail or one
that is resistant to the measures above, even after other treatments, antibiotics, etc., it is possible that you may need to consider surgery for the same. This involves removing a portion of the nail, generally down to the base.
While anesthesia is usually employed, unfortunately, this still can be a painful procedure at times, as well as expensive, so we try to avoid that if possible.
Many recurrences do occur, even with this measure, as well as with the other measures. So prevention and early recognition remain the most important items.
Woman charged with burning down house to collect insurance money

MORRISON – A Prophetstown woman has been formally charged with two counts of arson, one count of residential arson and one count of insurance fraud in connection with an April fire that destroyed a Prophetstown residence.
Donna M. McKenna, 52, was
charged with the felony offenses Wednesday in Whiteside County Circuit Court. According to court documents detailing the residential arson charge, McKenna, in the course of committing an arson on April 2, knowingly damaged a home at 217 Douglas St.
The count of insurance fraud alleges McKenna obtained or attempted to obtain, by deception, $100,000 or more
from Country Mutual Insurance Co. “by making, or causing to be made, a false claim on an insurance policy issued by Country Mutual Insurance Company.”
The residential arson and the insurance fraud charges are Class 1 felonies.
Of the two arson charges, one accuses McKenna, by means of fire or explosive, of knowingly damaging the residence without the homeowner’s
consent. The other charge alleges that she knowingly used fire or an explosive device to damage the property with the intent to defraud the insurer. Both of those charges are Class 2 felonies.
Media reports at the time of the fire indicate the house was declared a total loss.
McKenna is to appear in court at 9 a.m. Nov. 4.
Cordova man to be inducted into Illinois Outdoor Hall of Fame

SPRINGFIELD – A Cordova man is one of seven Illinois residents who will be inducted into the Illinois Outdoor Hall of Fame.
The Illinois Conservation Foundation board of directors announced the selections last week in a news release. The formal inductions will occur during the annual ICF Gala to be held in the spring.
According to the ICF, Jeremiah Haas, an aquatic biologist at the Constellation Quad Cities Clean Energy Center, has dedicated his career to the management and operation of the Quad Cities Fish Hatchery.
3K run, disc golf tourney set for Oct. 19 in Morrison MORRISON – Morrison is hosting a costumed 3K run and disc golf night tournament Saturday, Oct. 19, to raise money in the fight against child trafficking.
The Nightmare On High Street 3K Run/ Walk encourages runners to dress in their favorite Halloween costume. A costume contest will take place at 9 a.m.

Rams, Steamers advance to state: The Riverdale and Fulton boys golf teams advanced to the Class 1A state tournament after finishing first and third, respectively, at the Class 1A Rockford Lutheran Sectional on Oct. 7.
Riverdale won the sectional with a score of 299 with four golfers in the top 10. Rockford Lutheran took second with a 312 and Fulton was third with 315. The top three teams advanced to state.
Leading the Rams were Aidan Dorathy and Mason Smyser with 74s and Braden Janicki with a 75, followed by Blake Sutton with a 76. Dean Wainwright (94) and Dylan Watson (102) also competed for the Rams.
Rockford Lutheran’s Jake Guse (70) was the medalist and Rockford Christian’s Gavin Hultman took second place with a 73.
Fulton was led by Owen Van Zuiden, who shot 76 for sixth place. Also scoring for Fulton were Jacob Voss (79), Zach Winkel (76) and Dawson Price (84). Chase Dykstra (88) and Braedan Brennan (89) also competed for the Steamers.
Other area individuals advancing to state included Bureau Valley’s Wyatt Novotny (78) and Forreston’s Kaden Brown (78).

Erie-Prophetstown also competed, but did not advance, finishing in 11th place. Caden Vanhorn led the Panthers with a 90, followed by Blake Geuns (92), Parker Rangel (93) and Sawyer Copeland (96).
The Class 1A state finals will be Oct. 18-19 at Prairie Vista Golf Course in Bloomington.
