LivinginthevicinityofFulton’sDe ImmigrantWindmillmeans alot offoot andvehicletrafficintheneighborhood,so aFulton couplehaveusedtheirprime locationtoshare aloveofnature’sbounties.InthealleyacrossfromtheLincoln Highwaygazeboon10thAvenue,theAlley Coophasbeen asourceoforganicproduce allyear.

AlisonCramptonandScottHutchison startedtheirfirstindoorgardeninearly 2021andit’sbeen alaborofloveeversince. Theydecidedtogo “biggerandbetter” in bringingfreshproducetothecommunity thisyearbygrowingmoreanddebuting theAlleyCoopsalescartlateinthesummer.

Althoughthisyear’sgardeningisdone, thereareplentyofperfectpumpkinsfor thepickingbythecart,plusjellies,fruit salsas,sunflowerheads,freshandpickled eggsandcannedrecipesfrom abountiful season.Scottalso raises beesfortheir honeyand to helpAlisonwithherallergy issues,soit’sbecomeastapleofthestand.

“Weenjoysharingourcropswithothers,sowebuiltour‘AlleyCoop’stand,” saidAlison,whocreditsScottandhis “amazingcarpentryskills”forthecart thatincludesshelves, ablueminifridge andfreezerand amenuboard.“We’vehad so muchfunbuildinganddecoratingitto makesurepeoplewanttostopbyand enjoyourharvests!”

Theirpropertyissituatedonthreelots, givingthem ayardwithamplespaceforall theirgardeningneeds.Everythingis startedindoors,andtheproducewas plantedinfourplantingstages –whenone cropwasdone,theyaddedanother.They grewa lotofeverythingthepastyear includingherbs,pumpkins,squash,cabbage,broccoli,cauliflower,lettuce,carrots,sweetpotatoesandmanyvarietiesof peppersandtomatoes.OneofScott’shobbiesishuntingforwildmushrooms,sothe seasonaldelicacywasofteninstock.

AsmallflockofchickensandZeusthe 2-year-oldblackShepardalsohavebrought lifetotheproperty.Thechickensandtheir coopwere anewadditionthisyear,including avery“special”henthatlookslike MissPrissyfromLooneyTunes,according toherowners.Thechickensmake their contributionstothehomestead,witheggs foreatingandselling,eggshellsforsoil mixturesandchickenfertilizerforcompost,sonothingiswasted.Theorganicegg salessupportthecostofchickenfeed.

Thehomesteadgardenis ahobbyanda “happyplace”forthecouple,whoboth work full-time.HeownsAscottConstruction,andsheworksatHunter’sTooinFulton.Theyevenputlightsonthehouseso theycouldworkthegardenintothenight afterfulldays.Theyloveflowersand plantedmanyvarietiesalongtheborders

andthroughoutthegardenbeds.

“Alison toldmeIdotoomuch,andI explainedthat Iwouldseetouristswalking allthroughtheproperty,takingpictures,” Scottsaid.Herecalledthetimethree elderlyladiescameoutofthechickencoop during adowntowneventandtoldhim thatthe placewassobeautiful,they thoughtitwascity-owned.

Anotherfavoritestoryoftheirs isthe timealittle red-headgirlwasridingher bigwheel,yellingtoherdadoverandover, “we’realmostthere –theyellowbrick road!”Theyarrivedatthegardenandher dadliftedher overhisheadsoshecould smellthegiganticsunflowers.Theytook pictures andplayedfor alongtime,with Alisonpickingher amarigoldbeforethey left.

Evenasthegardenbedsareputtorest forthewinter,thecouple alreadyisenvisioningthenextseason,withplanstogrow muchmore.Scottalsobuildsraisedflower

bedsandhopesthatwilloccupysomeof histime.Plus, apantryfullofsummer’s bountyandtriedandtruerecipeswill inspirethenextseasonofgrowth.

“Ilove eatingfromnatureandharvestingmanyfallandspringmushroomsand plants.AndI lovemakingmygrandmother’scannedgoods Igrewupon,”Scott says.“I’msharingmyloveoforganicfoods andSouthernstyleproductsthat Igrewup on.”

“Welovetoseetourists andwalkers stopand admire ourgarden.That’swhy Scottneverquits.Hetakessomuchpride inoursliceofparadise,”saidAlison,notingthey’velivedhereforaboutthree years.“Thisisjustfunforus.”

Brent’sFirehouseCoffee,LLCownersBrentand AmyBrightmanofCamancheandKrumpetsownersMelanieandManreetKalyanofFultonofficially openedMorrisonMochaonSaturday,Oct.8,after spendingafewmonthsupgradingthecornerbuildingat301W.Lincolnway,whichhasbothdrivethruandindoororderingfordrinksandpastries.

Thisisthefourthbusinesslocation forthe Brightmans,whoowncoffeeshopsinCamanche, DeWittand Clinton,plusamobilecoffeetrailer that’sbeen setupattheWhitesideCountyFair, amongotherplacesintheregion.

“WejustfeltthattheMorrisoncommunityand thesurroundingareaneededadifferentvarietyof coffeeandpastrychoices,andboth us andKrumpetscomplementeachotherso wellthatitwas a greatfitforallofus,”Brentsaid.Hegrewupin Chadwicksohe’sfamiliarwiththe“thriving county seat”ofMorrison.

BrentandAmyfirstgotintothecoffeebusiness in July2019,openingadouble drive-thru coffee shopattheoldFoxRollerRinkparkinglotin Camanche,Iowa.Theyexpandedinto DeWittin May2021,whichisnowasingledrive-thruandsitdowncoffeeshop,andthentoTheAlvernosenior livingcenterinClintoninNovember2021,where theyhavecurbsidepickupforcustomersandon-site serviceforstaffandresidents.

InMay2022,theypurchasedacoffeebeanroastingbusinessinClinton,Iowa.
