Almost 66% of voters say no to public safety sales tax

MORRISON – Whiteside County voters rejected a 0.5% countywide sales tax Nov. 5 to help fund emergency dispatch services.

The measure failed after 65.85% of voters said no to the sales tax, which would have collected 50 cents per every $100 spent on general merchandise bought in Whiteside County and was estimated to raise $2 million annually. The money would have been used to help shore up an annual $500,000 deficit.

A total of 16,913 voters were against the measure, while 8,771 were in favor of it, according to unofficial election results posted on the Whiteside County elections website.

Whiteside County Sheriff John Booker said Nov. 5 that the only positive thing about the outcome is this time more peo-

ple voted for the tax than they did last time around.

“Unfortunately, no one wants a tax increase,” Booker said. “That’s the bottom line. Nobody wants it. This was the best thing for our county, our citizens, and if it would have passed, it would have saved money.”

The money derived through the tax would have been used for matters of public safety and any funds left over would have been used to buy equipment and radio and software upgrades while allowing for multiagency interaction. It also would have eliminated the money Sterling and Rock Falls pay for services, placing that money back into their general funds.

Whiteside County Administrator Amy Robbins said dispatch services cost the county $1.8 million to operate, with a yearly deficit of about $500,000.

the majority of the bill.

Over the past year, Sterling paid $392,465 and Rock Falls paid $294,348, totaling $686,813, as part of their agreement to pay for dispatch services. Booker said had the measure passed, that money could have been spent on other things.

Now that the tax has failed, smaller communities in the county, including Morrison, Fulton, Erie, Albany, Lyndon, Tampico, Prophetstown, Coleta, Deer Grove and Fenton, will have to start chipping in to make up the shortfall.

“I don’t know how these smaller municipalities are going to pay,” Booker said. “Dispatching is an expense. However, I promise at no time is public safety going to be in jeopardy because this didn’t pass. We’re going to continuously do what we’re doing to keep the people safe in our area. If you call 911, it’s still going to get answered. These places are just going to have to figure out how to pay for it.”

Why did you become a B.L.I.N.D. leader?

I became a B.L.I.N.D. leader because I needed to get involved in something. Sports wasn’t my thing and I wanted to be a part of a group that made a difference. This was something that I wish I had joined my junior year as well. I saw how the students above me enjoyed being in it as well. What type of music do you listen to?

I personally listen to a mixture of Christian and alternative music.

What do you do in your free time?

In my free time, I play piano and clean a lot. I usually hang out with my friends as well whenever I have free time.

What are your plans after high school?

After high school, my plan is to go to college. I haven’t figured out which college yet

but I want to stay in the area.

How would you like to be remembered at Fulton High School?

I would like to be remembered at Fulton High School as someone who tried their hardest and put their best foot forward every day.

Sauk Valley veterans lift off on Honor Flights

From the World War II, Lincoln and Korean War memorials to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Honor Flight of the Quad Cities gives Sauk Valley-area veterans the opportunity to go to the nation’s capital to see memorial sites and remember fallen comrades.

The program honors veterans by pairing them with volunteer guardians for a daylong trip to Washington, D.C., where they can share personal experiences and make lifelong connections with other veterans.

The Whiteside County chapter was established in 2009, followed by the Lee County chapter in 2010. Both are part of the Honor Flight of the Quad Cities, which operates as a regional hub among 131 hubs spread across 45 states and serves veterans within a 75-mile radius.

Whiteside County Honor Flight Chairman Mike Terveer said the trip begins about 5 a.m. with a charter bus to the Quad Cities International Airport in Moline and an early flight to Washington. Once they land, veterans will visit several monuments, including the Lincoln Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, the World War II Memorial, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and others, before returning at 10 p.m.

“You leave early in the morning and don’t get back till late,” Terveer said. “It makes for a long day, but it’s touching and worthwhile.”

Guardians provide veterans with companionship and assist them in any way possible. Despite having to pay $400 to cover their costs, guardians consider the opportunity to serve an honor, Hub Director Steve Garrington said.

“I’ve had some guardians sign up for multiple flights,” Garrington said. “I love seeing veterans and their guardians meet for the first time. Most of these guys are getting up there in age and rarely get the opportunity to make a new friend. When was the last time someone spent their whole day focused on you?”

Terveer said he can always use the extra help and

encourages people to sign up for a chance to be a guardian, promising “a day they’ll never forget.”

U.S. Army veteran Pete Barajas still remembers the day of his honor flight.

“They bent over backward for us,” Barajas said. “My wife and daughter dropped me off at the airport and I was whisked away to D.C. I remember people searching the wall monuments for names and making impressions of them with paper. It was an emotional day that was worth every minute.”

Each year, the Honor Flight Network sends 22,500 veterans to the nation’s capital free of charge, with more than 300,000 veterans flown since the program was created in 2005 by Jeff Miller and Earl Morse. Initially, the program focused on veterans from World War II and those with a terminal illness, but flights now include Korean War-era veterans as a top priority because of their advanced age.

“I had a 97-year-old vet from Sterling on a flight in April,” Terveer said. “He was a spry gentleman and it worked out fine, but these guys are getting up there in age and you don’t know how much longer they’ve got.”

HISTORIC TRIBUTE

Revolutionary War veteran memorialized in Whiteside County

The only Revolutionary War veteran buried in Whiteside County was honored Oct. 5 by the Kishwaukee Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, which installed a commemorative plaque at a cemetery southeast of Albany.

The SAR is a lineage society made up of male descendants of patriots who participated in or supported the fight for American independence from

Great Britain between 1775 and 1783, similar to the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Children of the American Revolution. The national group was founded in 1889 as a civic organization that aims to promote patriotism, preserve American history and educate future generations.

Illinois has 17 SAR chapters with more than 1,000 members, according to the Sons of the American Revolution.

The Illinois SAR started the cemetery-marking program in 2014 as a way to recognize Revolutionary War soldiers buried in cemeteries throughout the state. Since then, 15-year Kishwaukee SAR Chapter member Ray Beets said more than 30 cemeteries in Illinois have been marked, recognizing the lives and service of more than 50 patriots.

Kingsbury Cemetery, at the northeast corner of Elston and Gaulrapp roads, and Pvt. Alexander Thompson were added to that list Oct. 5.

Beets said it’s somewhat rare to hear about a Rev-

olutionary War veteran, in Illinois especially, “because the war happened on the East Coast of the United States back in the 1770s and 1780s.”

After the war ended in 1783, the colonies were a new country that didn’t have any of the modern-day military benefits to offer its veterans. What the new country did have was a large amount of land west of the Appalachian Mountains that was given to the colonies from Great Britain as part of the Treaty of Paris, which ended the war by recognizing the U.S. as an independent nation.

As a solution, the early leaders decided to offer that land to its veterans, who then packed up their belongings and traveled west in search of property to settle.

“(That is) how a lot of Revolutionary War veterans ended up being buried in Indiana, Ohio and Illinois,” Beets said.

A special congregational meeting was held at the Fulton Presbyterian Church, called by its pastor, the Rev. E.J. Blair, to concur with him in his request to Freeport Presbytery to dissolve the pastoral relationship because of his wish to retire from active ministry. Rev. Blair said he was reluctant to break ties with this church but since he and Mrs. Blair plan to make their home in Morrison, they will not be too far away from this community and will continue to be interested in the people he served here.

Masonic soup supper set for Nov. 14 in Fulton

FULTON – Fulton City Lodge No. 189 will hold a fall soup supper from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, at the lodge rooms, 1014 Fourth St., in downtown Fulton.

The menu for the all-you-can-eat supper includes vegetable beef and chicken noodle soups, ham salad and chicken salad sandwiches, cookies,

Charles Swift Jr. pleaded guilty Friday afternoon to involuntary manslaughter in connection with the shooting death last New Year’s Day of his wife. Swift Jr. was sentenced to serve from three years, four months to 10 years in prison. Last month, two psychiatrists declared him mentally able to stand trial.

The Fulton Flood Control District

announced it awarded a contract for an additional pumping station at the southern end of the flood control dike system. The contract was awarded to General Constructors Inc. It is expected that construction will begin soon with a completion date of June 1995. The new station will consist of two pumps. Combined with the two pumps already in place, they will handle about three times as much water as the existing pumps.

At 10:53 a.m. Sunday, firemen responded to a call at 502 14th Ave. Fire Chief Terry Bielema reported that upon arrival smoke and flames were seen coming from the living room windows. Fifteen minutes later, the fire was under control. At 4:57 a.m. Monday, firemen were called again and found the fire had rekindled with fire coming through the openings that firemen previously had made on the roof.

Shear Class Styling Salon announced the addition of two new cosmetologists. Rachel Wiersema and Jessica Miller recently received their degrees in cosmetology.

Thanks to a donation from CF Industries’ Classroom Minigrant Program, River Bend Community School teachers will receive $3,596 to support projects in their classrooms. The mini grant program offers money to teachers who incorporate agriculture or the environment in the classroom. CF Industries’ Albany terminal has donated more than $70,000 to support public safety, education and youth organizations in the Albany community.

Central Bank Illinois held its Annual Employee Recognition night honoring staff for years of service to the company. This year, two Fulton employees received special recognition and a gift from the bank. Karrie Kenney, market manager and vice president of lending, was honored for 25 years. Teller Mary Arlen was recognized for 15 years of service to the bank.

It also took close to 100 years before the U.S. government began providing veterans with burial rights. In 1867, Congress passed the National Cemetery Act to develop national military cemeteries and required all cemeteries to mark gravesites with headstones, appoint a superintendent for each cemetery and enclose the cemetery with a fence.

However, a permanent stone marker design was not adopted until 1873. Then in 1879, Congress extended the right of government-issued headstones to veterans buried in private cemeteries such as Kingsbury Cemetery.

Today, Thompson’s gravesite displays two grave markers.

The original was placed by his family shortly after his death in 1840, a small rectangular slab of white sandstone sitting at an angle in a concrete base. The marker appears to have been much taller at some point, but broke and was reset, leaving only his first name and part of his last name visible, Beets said.

The site was first commemorated by the Morrison DAR Chapter, which installed a bronze marker at a ceremony attended by several of Thompson’s great- and great-great-grandchildren on Sept. 16, 1967. That marker was rededicated by the Rock River DAR Chapter on May 22, 2022.

Members of the local DAR and CAR chapters attended the Oct. 5 ceremony, including the presidents of the Illinois SAR and CAR Chapter as guest speakers. The Northern Illinois SAR color guard also was present, attending with period-correct uniforms and muskets. Nine of Thompson’s descendants were in attendance and, as family, laid flowers at his gravesite.

Near the end of the ceremony, members of the Kishwaukee SAR Chapter unveiled the aluminum plaque, which was installed just inside the fence along Gaulrapp Road.

“We raised money and started working on this plaque before the pandemic started [in 2020],” Illinois SAR Chapter President Bill Wheeler said.

His military service began about a year later when he enlisted for a twomonth tour in August 1776 under Capt. Alexander Laughlin and Col. William Clark in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. In December of that year, he served another two months under Capt. Laughlin and Lt. Col. Francis Gurney in Middletown, New Jersey.

His last two-month tour began in December 1777 under Capt. John Jacob Astor and Col. Arthur Buchanan in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

He then continued his involvement by serving in the Commissary Department in General Muhlenberg’s Brigade, which was a group of soldiers who camped in Pennsylvania’s Valley Forge from 1777 to 1778. The commissary’s role was to buy, pack and distribute rations of food and supplies to the rebel patriots.

During the 1800s, the U.S. continued its westward expansion. The Louisiana Purchase from France in 1803 doubled the size of the country and stretched from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains and from the Gulf of Mexico to the Canadian border. By 1890, the U.S. had grown to 44 states.

In 1839, Thompson followed a prevailing trend among many Americans at the time to move into the unexplored lands the U.S. obtained. He sold his Pennsylvania farm and traveled west toward the Mississippi River along with his wife, six of their children and a son-in-law.

After five months of travel, the family made it to Whiteside County in October of that year. Thompson bought an 80-acre property to build their home on – which was just across the road from the present-day Kingsbury Cemetery.

The second Thompson grave marker is a government-issued headstone displaying his name, service information and death date. Beets said

In total, the plaque cost about $3,000 and was funded through donations, fundraisers and SAR endowment funds, Wheeler said. In gold text, the plaque details a brief overview of Thompson’s life and service.

After the war ended on Sept. 3, 1783, Thompson was granted a pension as a Pennsylvania militiaman and continued his life on a farm in Cumberland County for many years.

Tendinitis: Here

Tendinitis is a common condition that many of us will experience on occasion when we have engaged in activity more than our body was ready for. Sometimes it is an entirely different activity. Sometimes it is simply too much of the usual in some common terms of snow shoveler’s tendinitis, tennis elbow and others.

What is tendinitis?

Tendinitis in its purest sense is inflammation of the tendon. A tendon is the fibrous tissue that is at the end of the muscle helping to attach it to bones, cartilage or ligaments. The fleshy part in the middle is the muscle proper, with the tendon generally coming at the ends close to the joint.

Of course, a muscle and a tendon may be inflamed at the same time and the pain of one is sometimes difficult to distinguish from that of the other, although close examination usually can help determine if it is more of the fleshy muscle portion involved or the tendon.

Tendinitis often arises when the tendon is subjected to a force or activity that is greater than it is conditioned for. In this sense, many forms of tendinitis are alike such as tennis elbow and other eponyms – golfer’s elbow, etc.

They share the common denominator of inflammation of the tendon, which arose from more use than the tendon was ready to be subjected to.

This is why the term “overuse syndrome” is often applied to many forms of tendinitis. Technically, though, it is not an overuse, but rather more use than it has been conditioned for. For example, a conditioned athlete can withstand much more stress and activity of a tendon, as well as muscle, than a sedentary individual. Thus, conditioning is one of the keys to helping prevent or minimize the condition.

Gradual buildup of a procedure or condition may help lessen the risk of tendinitis developing. However, even doing all the basic preventive measures, most of us likely are to encounter situations in which we are either by choice in leisure or work subjecting our tendons to more than they are used to doing or at least conditioned for.

Sometimes it is a repetitive motion

at work such as a screw driving type of twisting or turning, even only in slightly different fashion than we are used to doing, or perhaps a few longer hours than what we have been conditioned for or operating the press a little differently or a different type of press, or, again, for more hours.

Even an occasional game of volleyball may induce a type of tendinitis about the wrist or in the forearm. It is even surprisingly to many athletes who have one set of muscles and tendons well-conditioned that they would develop a tendinitis in another set that is not so well-developed or conditioned. The list could go on, but the principles are the same.

What is the best form of treatment?

Obviously, the first step is prevention and conditioning of muscles and tendons and efforts to avoid extremes of deviation from the wear and tear they are used to.

Second, stretching muscle groups and tendons gently before and after activity helps to minimize the inflammation they have been subjected to. We no longer recommend ice for these condition as it has been discredited by interrupting blood flow, which carries important elements with the inflam-

mation. Where we used to think ice, we may employ blue light LED.

Finally, rest and modification of activity may lead to a fair amount of restoration of the tendon from its inflamed state. While often this is not possible from a work standpoint to a great extent, even minor changes and deviations can lessen the load on a particular tendon.

Your doctor also may recommend anti-inflammatory medication such as aspirin, Advil, Motrin, Aleve, etc., if you do not have any of the contraindications to these agents and providing that their potential side effects are acceptable and not disruptive.

Unfortunately, because of the nature of our activities – work, recreation, etc. – there are some people who develop chronic tendinitis, which is difficult to manage. Even so, application of the above principles often will do much to help sustain their activities, particularly occasional anti-inflammatory use as well as stretching. It is some of these basic principles that have allowed many athletes to continue pursuing their careers that otherwise might have ended prematurely. The same principles can apply to your work opportunities.

A visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Monday, November 11th at the Fulton Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home, with an additional one hour of visitation on Tuesday before the funeral service, starting at noon. Interment will be at Fulton Township Cemetery. Memorials have been established to Honor Flight and Heartland Pet Welfare, Inc. in Savanna, IL.

He was educated in the Mt. Hope School in rural Whiteside County, and was a 1951 graduate of Fulton High School in Fulton, IL. In those twelve years he never missed a single day of school. Neil served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War. On October 28, 1960 he married Julia J. Buxton in Fulton. From 1951 until 1959 he was employed at the Agrico Fertilizer Plant in Fulton. He then worked until 1965 for the Allen Printing Co. in Clinton, and then at the former Savanna Army Depot in federal service until his retirement in 1993. Neil enjoyed camping and wintering in Texas for 27 years. He was an avid NASCAR fan and loved riding his Harley. He was quite fond of his cat, Maggie Mae, but more than anything he loved spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Julia; one daughter, Kathy (Terry) Rickertsen of Bryant, IA; two sons, Tim Houzenga of North Liberty, IA and Scott (Rhonda) Houzenga of Dahinda, IL; four grandchildren, Tanner Rickertsen, Tyler Houzenga, Megan Houzenga, Josh Houzenga, and one brother, Harlan (Joyce) Houzenga of Fulton.

In addition to running a beauty shop, she had various part-time jobs in sales, presenting products at in-home parties and passing out product samples at grocery stores. She loved to talk to people.

Donna had a talent for writing and enjoyed writing short stories and poems. She was also great at sending letters, emails, and using social media to keep in touch with her many friends and family. Some of her other hobbies included gardening, planning parties, baking, sharing recipes, and spending time with her grandchildren.

Donna is survived by her children Julie Wells Kramer (Gene Kramer), Clinton IA, Douglas Johnson, Erie, IL, Melinda (Hank) Lane, Jacksonville, IL; grandchildren Lexi and Liam Lane; sister Bobbi Stockslager of Pinellas Park, FL; and Bella the Beagle. Paul A. Dillin, 81, of Hillsdale, IL, died unexpectedly on Friday, November 8, 2024 at his home.

Paul was born September 30, 1943 in Hillsdale, IL, the son of Howard “Pee Wee” and Clara (Jacobs) Dillin. He graduated from Hillsdale High School in 1961. He married Barbara Schupbach on September 12, 1970 in Princeton, IL. Paul spent his whole life in Hillsdale. He became a volunteer firefighter for the Hillsdale Fire Department as a teenag-

er and worked for his dad, at Dillin’s Midway Mobile Station. He went on to work at the Caterpillar Engine Remanufacturing Plant in Bettendorf. From there he worked security at the Nuclear Plant in Cordova for many years before taking his final job in Public Works for the Village of Hillsdale.

Paul was dedicated to serving his community through the Hillsdale fire Department for more than 60 years. He served in all roles, including Fire Chief and President of the Trustees.

He was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, trapping and trapshooting. His greatest passion were his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved attending their activities and sporting events.

He is survived by his son, Dale Dillin, Hillsdale; daughter, Kristin (J.D.) Snowden, Hillsdale; grandchildren, Christopher Dillin (Michelle Quilty), Daniel (Jennifer) Dillin, Autumn Dillin, Callen Snowden, Addelyn Snowden; great grandchildren, Lexi, Kaydence and Wyatt Dillin, Camryn and Levi Dillin, and Arizona Dillin; brother, Skip (Linda) Dillin, Bloomington, IL; and several nieces and nephews. E-P’s best volleyball season as a co-op ends in Sweet 16

MANLIUS – Its first regional title as a co-op. A trip to the Sweet 16. A 10-0 conference run en route to a Three Rivers West title and a program-record 32 wins.

It was a season to remember for the Erie-Prophetstown Panthers.

The impressive run ended Nov. 7 as E-P fell 25-22, 25-16 to El Paso-Gridley in the Class 2A Bureau Valley Sectional title game. It was a matchup of two teams playing for their first sectional titles.

The Titans (30-7) were just the better team Thursday night.

“I think we started out a little slow in both games there but picked it up toward the end,” E-P coach Heather Bruns said. “They’re a great team. They’ve got hitters all the way around. It’s like they don’t have a hole in their offense, so that makes it hard as a team defending them to know where to go, where to block. They also don’t really have a hole in their defense. But I thought the girls fought really well and it was fun to be here. I really think the nerves got to them at this point.”

E-P (32-4-2) trailed 20-13 in the opening set before Bruns took a timeout and reminded the team to play like it

wanted it more.

The Panthers responded well, battling to a 22-20 deficit, but the Titans

had an answer as they were in control for most of the evening. The Panthers carried momentum to the second set, leading 4-1, but the Titans again gained control and did not surrender the lead after going up 6-5.

“I want to give them credit. They came out, they were ready to go,” Lauren Abbott said of the Titans. “They had some huge blocks and great defense, too.”

Sophomore Jaida Reed had five aces for the Titans. Senior Reese Deckard had eight kills and two blocks. Taylor Langland had 12 assists.

“That serve-receive was uncharacteristic for us,” Bruns said. “We fought, did what we needed to do and we just came up short tonight.”

Kaylee Keegan had two aces, 19 assists and seven digs for E-P. Abbott, a fellow junior, led the team with 11 kills and had an ace and two blocks.

Senior Jamie Neumiller had three kills and seven digs. Junior Eden Jensen had three blocks.

Jensen said this season showed the team is capable of more than it may have imagined.

Erie-Prophetstown exceeds all expectations

MANLIUS – The Erie-Prophetstown Panthers had never reached the girls volleyball sectional finals since the two schools co-oped in 2018, let alone win a regional championship.

When Ashlyn Johnson delivered match point for a 25-16, 25-22 winner over Seneca in the Class 2A Bureau Valley Sectional semifinals Nov. 5 at the Storm Cellar, they got excited. Real excited.

“Honestly, me as a junior, I feel like it means a lot because this is my first year on varsity, and I’m really excited,” Johnson said. “I feel like we have a strong connection with the whole team, which makes it that much better and easier to play.”

“Our schools have never done this. It means a lot. We just keep growing and growing, which is amazing to watch,” junior libero Payton Umstead said.

Junior middle hitter Lauren Abbott was especially active to start the match for E-P (32-3-2), hitting four kills to help stake the Panthers to an 8-4 lead.

“I feel like we pushed really hard and I’m really proud of us because we had a great season this year,” Jensen said. “I’m really proud of our seniors. They’ve done super, super well, even in practice and on the court.”

“I feel like our team at the beginning of the season, we really didn’t see it,” senior Peyton Umstead said. “But now we’re here. Even though it ended sooner than we wanted, we’re still so proud of ourselves for getting here. It was amazing to be a part of. I just hope the best for the juniors next year and hope they can carry that on.”

Despite the loss, E-P had great fan support. Thursday’s crowd was full of red and felt like a home game at times. Bruns said the middle school basketball team postponed a game and other teams didn’t practice so they could come out and support the Panthers.

“Our community is amazing,” Bruns said. “At the end of the game, I told them to just look [at the crowd].”

This year’s E-P team raised the bar for the future. Bruns credited the five seniors for what they provided this season.

port for the team when it was needed. Umstead was a role model and provided a calm presence. Allie Russell and Mia Weidel were reliable off the bench.

“It’ll be tough losing those five and trying to find a way to replace them, but you know, we’re thankful for where they led us,” Bruns said. “I said, ‘You opened a door and got us here, so let’s keep building on it year after year.’

“I just think their drive, their desire, their want to be here and their cohesiveness as a team has really brought them this far.”

Kallie Wisely followed an Irish net serve with a block and served an ace to put E-P up 20-15.

Junior Brynn Brown served an ace of her own to give the Panthers a 22-16 edge and junior middle hitter Eden Johnson took a quick set by Kaylee Keegan to run it to 24-16 lead.

E-P took the first set 25-16 on an Irish error.

The Irish (32-6) scored the first five points of the second set, but the Lady Panthers rallied to tie the game at 7 on a block by Neumiller and took a 9-7 lead on an ace by Abbott.

Abbott brought the hammer for a big kill to put E-P up 16-12 and teamed with Kalie Wisely for a block as Seneca was ruled to be in the net to go up 19-16.

Seneca battled back to tie the score at 21. Johnson hit for a side-out, then tipped for another point to give the Panthers a 23-21 lead.

“We go one week at a time, so we’re looking forward to ‘What’s next? What’s next? What’s next?’ The girls have exceeded our expectations all year long,” E-P coach Heather Bruns said. “We graduated a lot of seniors. Jamie [Neumiller] and Lauren [Abbott] have played varsity three years. So I knew we had some experience. We lost our setter we had for four years, but Kaylee [Keegan] has stepped up tremendously.”

Seneca coach Noah Champene said it was a case of pick your poison defending E-P’s hitters.

“They had multiple hitters. We were very worried about [Abbott]. We were very worried about [Johnson] and [Neumiller]. Seemed like whoever we focused on, they’d go to the other girl. It’s tough,” he said. “They’re a very good team. Not sure we played our absolute best game of the year, but when you play a good team, they force you to make some of those mistakes. I was proud of our girls’ effort though.

“I thought we were focused. I felt like we were prepared. We went on some runs there where we hung in for awhile and put us in spots where we could compete. Ultimately, they made a few more plays at the end of ther day.”

Johnson and Abbott each hit for nine kills while Neumiller added four.

That kind of balance is what makes

the Panthers so strong Bruns said.

“That’s something we’ve had all year long. We’re not focused on one

hitter. We have multiple options. So when you can keep the other side guessing, [it helps]. They were very heavily focused on Lauren [Abbott] in the middle, so it was nice for my outsides to get the job done.”

“I feel they were really keying on our middles and our outsides did a lot tonight,” Umstead said.

Also for E-P, Brown and Neumiller had seven digs apiece and Umstead had six. Keegan dished out 24 assists.

Lainie Olson had 14 assists for the Irish while McNabb delivered nine kills.

Both Bruns and Johnson pointed to winning the Oregon tournament as to when the Panthers knew they had a good thing going.

“That was an eye opener for us that we can do some things this year,” Bruns said.

“We just kind of went with the flow and when we won the Oregon tournament we knew from there,” Johnson said.

It was a historic season for the Irish, who bowed out with a school-record 32 wins.

“I was so proud of everything those guys accomplished,” Champene said. “Those seniors, especially. Just an outstanding class and great leaders and great athletes. It’s a special group I’m going to remember for a long time. I think it’s something going forward we can build on with the younger girls.”

Fulton pushes Galena but comes up short

Steamers rally to almost force third set vs. defending state champion Galena

POLO – A late Fulton rally pushed defending Class 1A state champion Galena to the brink of a third set in the Class 1A Polo Sectional semifinal Nov. 5.

But facing set point, the Pirates scored three straight to end the Steamers’ season and move on to the title match with a 25-16, 27-25 victory.

“We’ve definitely been in tight games in pressure situations multiple times, so I think we’re really good at being able to stay up and just know that when the game’s tight, we just have to play our game and we’ll be fine,” Galena senior hitter Gracie Furlong said.

“We really come out when we need to,” junior middle Mya McCoy said. “I feel like we execute really well. Coach calls a timeout to try to get us to calm down, give us a break and we kind of regroup and go out there and do our thing.”

Furlong (10 kills) and McCoy (7 kills, 4 blocks, 2 aces) helped Galena (34-3) control the net for most of the match, including a methodical, workmanlike opening set in which the Pirates just kept pulling away.

With the same thing happening early in the second set, Fulton (26-10-1) flipped a switch. Senior setter Miraya Pessman’s dump kill kicked off a 6-0 run as junior Jada Schaver served a pair of aces and freshman middle Chloe Wilkin slammed a kill and stuffed a block to turn a 7-2 deficit into an 8-7 lead.

“We had to hit at them and we knew that,” Pessman said. “In the first set, we just weren’t getting enough passes and sets to truly hit the ball at them, kill the ball and get them out of system. They were able to get it to Gracie on the outside. So that second set, we really just hammered the ball a lot more.”

“When our hitters step up, we pound the ball and we know what’s up,” senior libero Resse Germann said. “I don’t know how else to explain it. We know we have to go, so we attack and go hard and give it our all.”

Germann and the back row played a part in the Steamers’ surge, digging up shots by Furlong, McCoy and Kendra Bauer to allow Fulton’s offense to get those stronger swings – which, in turn, helped keep the Pirates out of system.

“We just know how to play defense. That’s a strong suit for us,” said Germann, whose 16 digs accounted for half of Fulton’s total. “Without the effort of

us diving all over and trying to get the ball up every time, we can’t hit the ball and we can’t score points. It puts a lot of pressure on the passers to just try to get the ball up, but with [Furlong] and their middles hitting it so hard and so fast, the thing you’ve got to do is trust your game and just pray you’ll get the dig up.”

A Furlong kill and a Bauer block put Galena up 10-8, and after a Wilkin spike, three straight Fulton errors gave the Pirates a 13-9 lead. Kills by Leah Heller and Furlong bookended a pair of blocks by McCoy and Furlong’s kill and McCoy’s ace answered a kill by Fulton’s Kylie Smither for a 20-13 Galena lead.

A Pessman ace and a Wilkin block cut the Fulton deficit to 20-15 and a Wilkin kill was instead ruled a Bauer block, giving Galena a 21-16 lead instead of bringing the Steamers to within 20-17.

But Fulton didn’t let that deter its attack. Two kills and a block by Wilkin made it 21-19, forcing a Galena timeout.

“We’re really young in the front row with a lot of underclassmen at the net, but they didn’t show as underclassmen

today. We all showed as one team today and that was great to see,” Germann said. “We just started off slow the first set, then the second set, we knew what we needed to do and I think we just followed that plan better.”

A Furlong kill and consecutive Fulton errors put the Pirates at match point, 24-19, but the Steamers made one last surge. A Wilkin block ignited a 6-0 run that put the Steamers up 25-24. Smither had a pair of kills and Germann served an ace during that stretch and the defense was on point, digging up everything Galena threw at it.

“Especially with a team like that, it takes a second to adjust to their hitters,” Pessman said. “We just had to get in the mindset to dig up every single ball that we possibly could.”

Senior setter Abigail Merritt dumped a second-touch kill to tie the set 25-25 and a Fulton net violation put Galena back at match point. McCoy slammed a kill to finish it off.

Merritt dished 20 assists, Heller had three kills, Jayme Frank served three aces and Bauer chipped in two kills and

two blocks for the Pirates.

Wilkin had eight kills and six blocks, Smither spiked seven kills to go with a block and Pessman stuffed the stat sheet with eight assists, four kills, four digs and an ace for Fulton. Despite the loss, the Steamers were immensely proud of their season. Pessman and Germann said their final year was something special that they’ll never forget.

“It’s been so good and I wouldn’t want to go out with any other team,” Germann said. “We’re a family – we’re more of a family than we are a team. We love each other, we know what we’re feeling, we’re always there for each other. We just have fun playing out there together.”

“It was a family, honestly, it was a God-given family,” Pessman said. “I can’t thank God enough for that team and that coach that I was given for these four years. I wouldn’t trade it for the world, win or loss tonight.”
