AFultonfamily’sholidaytraditionis backfortheChristmasseasonandit’ssure tobringholidaycheertoallwhovisit.The KreiderChristmasLightsdisplayat815 Valleyview Drivewasofficiallylitupon Wednesday,Nov.23,andwillbeglowing until10p.m.everynightuntiljustafter Christmas.

Drivingbythedazzlingdisplayinspires asenseofwonder,withsomuchpurpose pouredinto aseasonaldisplay.Besidesthe visual appeal,visitorscanhearChristmas musicwhiletakinginthesights. Occasionalappearancesbythecreativefamily behindthemagicaddtoits allure– Bruce andJillKreiderandtheirkidsKaedence andParker,allincostume,waveandhand outcandycanestoallwhocomeby.

Thedisplayfeatureshundredsofvintageblowmolds,whichthefamilykeepsan eyeouttopurchase allyear.WithSantas, reindeer,snowmen,nutcrackers,gingerbread,angels,candycanes,candles,cute crittersandeven aNativityscene,thedisplayensuresthetraditionsofyesteryear willcontinuetoday.

TheChristmasdisplayis amixoflove,a dashofcompetitivespiritand aheartwarmingwaytosupporttheMake-A-Wish FoundationinClinton.For thoseinclined todonate,100%willgototheorganization. Bruce’sfriendservedonthelocalboard andthefamilydecideditwas agoodcause todonatetoforChristmas.

TheKreidershavecollectedforthe organizationforfiveyears,withsnowmen in theyardholdingsignsshowingthe amounteachyear:$100in2011,$200in2012, $190 in2013,$723in2020and$1,223.09in 2021.Thisyear’sgoalis$1,500.

Thereis anoticeablegapinthecollectionyears.Afterthe2013display,Bruce andJilldecided topulltheplugontheir seasonalhomeprojectandendedupselling theirwholecollection.Buttheyeventually had achangeofheartandstartedbuying againin2019,debutingtheirnewcollection

thenextyear.

Itcanbequite atime-consuminghobby, withsetup alonetakingabout90hours. Hopefullythere’snosnowwhenit’stimeto comedown,as pulling up decorationsand electricalcordsin afrozenlandscapeisnot verypleasant.Theyalsoneedtomoveitto off-sitestorage.

Bruceadmitsto“grandambitions”for theannualdisplaybutit’snotalwaysashe hopesitwouldbe. Henotedthere’san annualGolden GlowConventionfor Christmasdisplayenthusiasts, andperhapsonedaythey’llgettoattend.Forthe seasonalvisitorsdrivingaroundtolookat thelights,theyardisstill asighttobehold.

TheKreiderstookfirstplaceinFulton’s Christmas DecorationContestin2020and havewonotherawardsthroughoutthe years.TheyuseLEDlightsandeverything ison atimer,soit’sanenergyefficientdisplaythatonlyusesabout 1,500wattsof electricity aseason. Jillsaidtheylike whentheweatherismildsotheycanbe outsidetogreetthevisitors.

SecretaryofStateJesseWhiteawardedmore than$5.6millioninannualadultliteracygrantsto helpstudentsdevelopandenhancetheirreading, math,writingandEnglish-languageskills.

“AnestimatedtwomillionIllinoisresidents need adult literacyand/orEnglish-language instruction,”Whitesaid.“Iampleasedtoprovide fundingfor108localliteracyprojectsthatwillallow adultstudentstohelpthemachievetheirutmost potentialintheupcomingyear.Ithasbeenan

honorservingasSecretaryofStateandState Librarianforthelast24years,helpingtoensure thateverycitizenofthisstatehasaccesstoquality literacyprograms.”

Shestayedsharp,andevenat93shewas

still keeping the books, paying the bills, and ridingaroundonhersidebyside.Sheand Douglovedtravelling,andtheoutdoors, sittingonthedeck,watchingtheeagles, birds,andthetreeschangecolors.Shealso likedtofishandplaycardswithherfriends, whogaveherthenickname“AvyBaby”.She lovedandtreasuredhergrand-dogs.Aviswas knownandlovedforherkindheartandwill bedearlymissed.

Immunizationsdrasticallyhavechangedthe frequency,aswellascomplications,ofchicken pox.Theimmunizationishighlyeffectiveandis generallygivenbetweenages12monthsand15 monthsandhaslittlesideeffects.Thereis a boosteratage4to6.Thisvaccinealsoishighly effective,aswellassafe,andpreventsthevast majorityofchickenpox.Rarely,theremaybe a mildrashfromthechickenpoxvaccine, though nottoanyextensivenature.

Manyparentsnaturallywillquestionwhywe needtogiveanothervaccineforaconditionthat wassocommonandwithoutmanyproblemsin mostpeople.Theyalsomaywonderifanatural diseaseismoreprotective.

Toanswerthelatterquestion,thevaccineis felttobeasprotectiveasthenaturalcondition. Thereareabout100casesofdeathpreventedeach year becauseofthevaccine.Thisisbecausewith thenaturalillnessasmallbutdefinitepercentage ofpeoplewill develop pneumonia,encephalitis, secondaryskininfectionsorReyessyndrome whenaspirinwasemployedduringtheillness Mostpeoplefeelthatthepreventionof100deaths isaveryworthwhilemeasure,nottomentionthe othercomplicationsthatarelessthanlifethreatening.

Erie Middle School students have Fall Service Day

ErieMiddleSchoolstudentsspent theirfinalhoursbeforeThanksgiving breakhelpingothersandexperiencing firsthandthemeaningof“ittakes a village”duringaFallServiceDayon Tuesday,Nov.22.

Groupsofstudentsspenttheafternooncleaningupyards,cleaningout theAnnexbuilding,decoratingthevillageChristmastree,makingcardsand ornamentsfortheelderly,andpreppingcraftprojectsforthisweekend’s HometownHolidayfestival.Twenty householdssigneduptohavestudents comebytolendtheirhelpinghands withleafrakinganddisposalbeingthe mainchore.

ResidentDorrieClarkwasvery grateful forthehelpwithoutdoor worksinceshe’sonoxygenandhad a yardfullofleaves.“Ireallyappreciate itandhadagoodtimewatchingthem. Thekidsdidagoodjobandhadfun doingit,”shesaid.She’slivedinErie forfiveyearsafterlivinginthecountryformorethan50years,andsaid she“pickedagoodtowntolivein.”

MayorMarciaSmiththankedthe studentsfortheirhelpastheystrung upthelightsontheevergreeninMargaretPark.“Youcouldn’taskforbetterweather,”shesaidofthepleasant Novembertemperatures.

SuperintendentChuckMilemsaid themiddleschoolerscompleteaserviceprojecteverysemester,andthese communityservice dayshavebeen a greatpartnershipbetweentheschool, villageandRevitalizeErie.ThestudentswillbedoinganotherService Dayinthespring.

TheeventwasorganizedbyVillage ofErieCommunityandEconomic DevelopmentDirectorKatelinBridgman,theMiddleSchooladministra-

tionandRevitalizeErie.WhitneyMisfeldt ofModernWoodmenof America donatedmorethan$500topurchase36 rakes,204pairsofglovesand100trash bagstomaketheeventpossible.

Thestudentsrakedmorethan400 bagsofleaves,cutoutpiecesfor 300 crafts forHometown Holidays,made 550ornamentsandcardsforelderly carefacilityresidents,cleanedoutthe Annexbuilding,andfestively decoratedthetreeinthetriangle.VolunteerMarkMeltonandBridgmanalso broughtoverthreetrailerloadsof yardwastetothevillageburnpile.

“IwassoimpressedwithourJunior Highstudents’workethictoday,” Milemsaid.“Manyofourkidsseemed totrulyenjoytheworkandfoundjoy inservingothers.Teachingserviceis veryimportanttoourdistrictand community,andwewant tocontinue toinstillthisintoourfuturegenerationstocome.”
